Medellín despidió a Pedro Sarmiento, por los malos resultados

BOGOTÁ -- El club colombiano Independiente Medellín despidió el viernes al técnico Pedro Sarmiento por los malos resultados obtenidos en la liga local, informó la entidad.

"Es una decisión que acabamos de tomar. Creíamos en este proceso, que íbamos muy bien, pero (...) al final no se estaban dando los resultados", dijo en una rueda de prensa el presidente del club, Eduardo Silva.

El dirigente reconoció que por momentos el Medellín jugaba bien, "tenía mucho compromiso, ponía buena garra, pero al final los resultados no eran" los que esperaban.

Silva agregó que a Sarmiento, que llegó al equipo en el segundo semestre de 2013, no lo acompañó la suerte aunque trabajó con dedicación y compromiso, "pero al final cerrando los partidos no teníamos buena suerte".

Disputadas seis jornadas del Torneo Apertura Colombiano, el Medellín suma tan sólo seis puntos de 18 posibles, producto de un triunfo, tres empates y dos derrotas.

En el último partido, jugado anoche ante el Atlético Júnior, el Medellín dejó escapar los tres puntos al ceder un empate en casa después de ir ganando 2-0, lo que precipitó la salida de Sarmiento.

Con el técnico salen también su asistente Juan Carlos Álvarez y el preparador físico Gustavo Adolfo Chaverra.

El nombre que más suena para reemplazar a Sarmiento es el de Hernán Torres, quien fue el encargado de sacar campeón a Millonarios en el Torneo Finalización de 2012, después de 24 años de ayuno de títulos.

Costa Rica int’l Gonzalez joins Columbus Crew

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Columbus Crew announced Friday the signing of Costa Rica international Giancarlo Gonzalez. The 26-year-old defender joins the Black & Gold from Norway’s Valerenga, where he made 27 appearances and scored three goals over one and a half seasons.

Prior to his departure for Norway, Gonzalez played domestically with Alajuelense, making 57 regular-season appearances and scoring six goals from 2009-2012. He also played in two editions of the CONCACAF Champions League (CCL) over that period.

"Giancarlo is a very experienced, young and promising centerback," said sporting director and head coach Gregg Berhalter. “He has experience in Europe and international experience with the Costa Rican national team. He´s been a solid starter all through FIFA World Cup Qualifying for Costa Rica and we feel he is going to be a good addition to our team.”

Internationally, Gonzalez has won 31 caps and netted two goals for Costa Rica, dating back to his debut against Peru in a friendly on October 9, 2010. He struck for the game-winner to give the Ticos a 1-0 win over Honduras in the final of the 2013 UNCAF Copa Centroamericana, the biennial Central American championship and CONCACAF Gold Cup qualifying tournament.

Gonzalez has also played in three CONCACAF Gold Cup matches, 14 FIFA World Cup qualifiers and two 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup encounters.

“He´s dangerous on offensive set pieces and he´s a good passer of the ball," continued Berhalter. “He´s good in one-v-one tackling and he has leadership qualities. He´s proven that he can win with Alajuelense in Costa Rica and with the Costa Rica national team, so we like all of those qualities.”

On August 25, 2011, while with Alajuelense, Gonzalez squared off against his new manager in a 2-0 CCL loss to the LA Galaxy. Berhalter was a starting defender that evening for the Major League Soccer power.

Alajuelense takes on Saprissa in the Costa Rican “Clasico”, while Universidad de San Carlos will look to fortify its credentials against Comunicaciones in Guatemala.

COSTA RICA

Two of Costa Rica’s footballing giants will square off on Sunday, when Alajuelense (16 points) hosts Saprissa (15 points) to conclude ninth-round play. Second-place Alajuelense, a CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinalist, is coming off a 0-0 draw with Cartagines.

Saprissa enters the contest with plenty of confidence following a 4-0 win over Santos de Guapiles in its last outing. Kendall Waston struck for two first-half goals to help keep the Purple Monster in third, while Mexican goalkeeper Luis Michel did not allow a goal for the first time since joining the club before the new season.

GUATEMALA

Sunday represents a golden opportunity for Universidad de San Carlos to establish its ascendancy in an encounter against reigning champion Comunicaciones. Universidad is in first place with 15 points after seven rounds in the Clausura, three more than the second-place Cremas.

It is also expected that Sunday will mark the debut of legendary striker Carlos Ruiz with Municipal (9 points), which hosts Halcones (9 points).

HONDURAS

After having its five-game winning streak end at the hands of Marathon last week, co-leader Real Sociedad (16 points) will attempt to rebound on Saturday at Victoria (10 points). The Realeza’s Rony Martinez tops the Honduran Clausura in scoring with eight goals.

The other co-leader, Olimpia (16 points) has allowed only one goal in its last four outings. It will aim to remain unbeaten after a Sunday encounter at Deportes Savio.

PANAMA

CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinalist Arabe Unido (13 points) faces Independiente (7 points) on Saturday with the objective of separating itself from Plaza Amador (13 points) atop the Clausura table. The Lions will host fifth-place San Francisco (8 points) on Sunday.

Also, on Saturday, Chepo (4 points) will hope to secure its first win of the season, when it visits Alianza (10 points).

EL SALVADOR

A grand duel is expected on Saturday as Luis Angel Firpo hosts Isidro Metapan. The sides are tied for second place on 10 points each. Firpo is unbeaten in its last four games, while Metapan will look to bounce back from a 3-1 loss to Atletico Marte.

First-place FAS (13 points) will welcome Alianza (7 points) to Santa Ana.

NICARAGUA

Joint-top leaders Real Esteli and Walter Ferreti, both on 16 points, will play on the road this weekend. Esteli will face Juventus Managua on Friday, while Ferretti travels to Jalapa two days later.

Third-place Diriangen (15 points) is the only unbeaten team in the Clausura after nine rounds. It will square off against host Chinandega on Sunday.

El clásico Santa Fe-Millonarios se roba la atención de la 7ª fecha

BOGOTÁ -- El líder en Colombia, Independiente Santa Fe, enfrentará este sábado a Millonarios en el clásico que centra el mayor interés de la séptima jornada del torneo local, en la que el segundo clasificado, Atlético Nacional, recibe a Equidad.

El rojo bogotano, que encabeza la clasificación con 16 puntos tras cinco triunfos y un solo empate en las primeras seis jornadas, tratará de mantener su posición en un partido ante su eterno rival, Millonarios, entrenado por el cuestionado técnico español Juan Manuel Lillo.

Santa Fe saldrá al campo con una mezcla de titulares y suplentes ya que la próxima semana viajará a la ciudad brasileña de Belo Horizonte para enfrentar el miércoles en partido de la segunda jornada del grupo 4 de la Copa Libertadores al Atlético Mineiro, actual campeón de este torneo continental.

Atlético Nacional, por su lado, recibirá también el sábado en Medellín a Equidad, sexto en la tabla, en un partido clave para no perder la estela del líder.

Al igual que Santa Fe, los paisas viajarán a Brasil la próxima semana para jugar el martes en Porto Alegre contra el Gremio en compromiso de la Libertadores.

También se jugarán el sábado los partidos Fortaleza-Patriotas.

El Atlético Huila recibirá al colista, Alianza Petrolera, mientras que el ascendido Universidad Autónoma visitará en Tunja a Boyacá Chicó, quinto con doce puntos.

El domingo los focos se centrarán en el Atlético Júnior-Deportivo Cali. El club de Barranquilla, con 12 puntos, afronta el encuentro en la tercera posición de la tabla detrás de Santa Fe y Nacional, mientras que Cali, hundido en el torneo local, llega de una derrota en la Libertadores frente al O´Higgins chileno.

Itagüí e Independiente Medellín protagonizarán un nuevo clásico antioqueño, mientras que Deportivo Pasto recibirá al Envigado y Once Caldas luchará por mantenerse en la parte alta de la clasificación ante Deportes Tolima.

Det er fedt med Oviedo. Jeg troede ikke der var en chance for at han kom med Costa Rica til VM, men han er åbenbart så fokuseret på at komme tilbage at han er forud for den genoptræningstid, som man kunne forvente han var på, på nuværende tidspunkt.

Dibben, med en kampklar Oviedo går både CR og Uruguay videre fra gruppen her til sommer ;-)

Det er flot hvis han når det, men han kommer nok til at være lidt rusten og måske også tilbageholdende.
