Defending champions Corinthians were ousted from the Copa Libertadores on Wednesday night, with a 1-1 draw in Brazil seeing six-time winners Boca Juniors advance to the quarter-finals 2-1 on aggregate.

Veteran playmaker Juan Roman Riquelme put Boca ahead in the 25th minute with a brilliant long-range shot which flew over the body of Corinthians goalkeeper Cassio Ramos.

That left Club World Cup champions Corinthians needing three goals to progress from the last-16 tie.

The hosts introduced former AC Milan forward Alexandre Pato in place of Romarinho at the start of the second half and equalised on the night through Paulinho´s 51st-minute header, but could not make any further inroads.

"We are very happy because we were confident in the team we have," Riquelme told Fox Sports.

"We played a great first half and we knew the second was going to be tough as Corinthians were stepping forward."

Pato passed up a fine chance to set up a tense finish towards the end, and Boca goalkeeper Agustin Orion had to be on his toes to keep Carlos Bianchi´s side on course to to claim a seventh Libertadores crown.

"We proved we want to be in top positions," Orion said.

"As Corinthians were losing, they were going to attack us a lot. We played a great match tonight."

Boca will host the first leg of the last-eight tie against Newell´s Old Boys, possibly next Thursday.

Newell´s prevailed 2-1 at Argentinian champions Velez Sarsfield on Wednesday to seal a 2-2 aggregate draw and win the tie on away goals.

Milton Casco´s third-minute goal ensured Newell´s got off to the perfect start, and the visitors doubled their lead four minutes before the break when Ignacio Scocco stole possession from defender Juan Sabia and beat Velez goalkeeper Sebastian Sosa at the second attempt.

Substitute Facundo Ferreyra struck seven minutes from time to give Velez hope, but they could not find any more goals and crashed out.

Evidentemente, preferimos no viajar a viajar.

Corinthians sign Chilean midfielder Claudio Maldonado

Chilean midfielder Claudio Maldonado has announced on twitter that he is joining Corinthians. He signed a contract until the end of the year.

Maldonado played for Flamengo until last year and has since then been recovering from a knee injury at Corinthians training ground.

He posted on his twitter account: "Friends, I can now say that I am a Corinthians player. I have signed my contract. What else can I ask? Thank you!"

The 33-year old midfielder is not expected to start, but will fight for a position with highly-rated defensive mifielder Ralf, who has not been called up for the Confederations Cup.

Corinthians have been needing an additional defensive midfielder since Guilherme Andrade had a serious knee injury that will leave him out of the football pitches for 5 months.

Willian Arão is the team´s remaining defensive midfielder, but he is deemed too inexperienced.

Flamengo set to announce new right-back

Flamengo are close to announcing a new right-back, as the club´s executive director Paulo Pelaipe has revealed.

The new right-back will arrive in Rio de Janeiro next week, when Flamengo plan to officially announce him.

The rubro-negro have been searching a right-back to fight for a place with experienced Leonardo Moura, who has been showing signs of decline.

Former Fluminense right-back Mariano, who is currently playing for Bordeaux, was linked to the club last month.

Cicinho, who has left Sport Recife, is another potential target and could be signed for free, which would fit the club´s current transfer policy.

The club´s executive director Paulo Pelaipe told reporters before the game against Campinense for the second round of the Brazilian Cup: "Flamengo have already signed another right-back. He will arrived next week. This is all I cay say for now."

Uruguay aims to be reborn at the Confederations Cup

Uruguay seeks to leave behind their ordeal in the World Cup qualifiers. As it stands today they are out of an automatic qualifying spot for Brazil 2014. For the Confederations Cup they will have at their disposal two of the top scorers in Europe, Edinson Cavani and Luis Suárez.

Led by coach Oscar Tabárez, who has given Uruguayan football a sort of renaissance and in the 2010 World Cup surprised the world by coming in fourth place, the world champions of 1930 and 1950 will battle to prove they belong in the football elite.

Uruguay are in the same group with Spain, reigning world champion, Tahiti and Nigeria and will debut in the Cup on June 16 against the ´Red Fury´.

"Right now Uruguayan football is a little low. We haven´t cemented our qualification because we have lost many points. This Cup can help the coach in choosing new players because now everyone knows how Uruguay plays and we must change", said Alcides Edgardo Ghiggia, a hero of Uruguayan football, to the AFP.

Ghiggia, who scored the game-winning goal for Uruguay to beat Brazil (2-1) in the epic World Cup final of 1950 remembered as the ´maracanazo´, said that Uruguay "has a chance" in the Cup, but "if we do things well and go with a competitive team, because I think it´s time to call up the young players" to transform the team.

Several of the standard-bearers of the selection are over 30 years of age, including team captain, defender Diego Lugano (Malaga, Spain) as well as striker Diego Forlan, who in South Africa 2010 was named best player of the World Cup and this year has been brilliant for Internacional of Porto Alegre being the top-scorer of the club having just won the Gauchao tournament.

Forlan was decisive in the final of the 2011 Copa America, the fifteenth in the history of this small country, where the Uruguayans beat Paraguay 3-0 with two goals from the striker.

Beyond the successes of 2011, the second half of 2012 and the beginning of this year have been a nightmare for the Uruguayan team. In a few short months they were soundly beaten by Colombia, Bolivia and Argentina.

A defeat by Chile and draws against Paraguay and Ecuador have put Uruguay in sixth place in the table and they are now temporarily out of Brazil´s 2014 World Cup.

The objective for Uruguay at the Confederations Cup is to "enjoy it", Tabárez told reporters after the tournament draw in Brazil.

In relation to the possibilities of his team in the Confederations Cup, Tabarez reflected that "it is not easy, but we believe we can" get a good result.

The almost certain presence of Suárez and Cavani on the team will raise the spirits of grieving fans who hope that the ´Gunman´ from Liverpool will leave behind the controversies surrounding him in the English League and continue scoring important goals for his country.

At his side will be the ´Matador´ Cavani -top scorer for the Italian Calico- who will look to repeat in the national team the same performance that elevated him to the status of hero in Naples. However, in recent games with Uruguay, Cavani has been in the shadows.

Uruguay´s preparation for the Cup, to be held in Brazil from June 15 to 30, will continue with a friendly against France on June 5 in Montevideo.

Just five days after its debut in Brazil, the team faces a decisive match when they go up against Venezuela, a direct rival for a spot in Brazil in 2014, in World Cup qualifying.

Felipao, the ´specialist´ who knows how to win a World Cup

Luiz Felipe Scolari took over the Brazilian team with the obligation to win the 2014 World Cup during one of the worst times for the team. But, knowing how to win a World Cup, he is calm and confident that he will get the sixth title at home.

The first major challenge for ´Felipao´ in his efforts to build a winning team comes with the Confederations Cup, which kicks off on June 15 in six of the 12 World Cup venues. Brazil will debut against Japan in the opening match in Brasilia.

Charismatic, energetic, with an iron discipline, Scolari, 64, came as the lifeline of a Brazil team that must win at home for their sixth world title, but whose football is still far off from where it should be.

A challenge that seems handmade for ´Felipao´. When he first took over as coach in 2001, he found a team almost dying in South American qualifying.

"The challenge was to qualify and go to the World Cup. We were in fourth or fifth place (...) We qualified in the last game against Venezuela", remembered the coach in an interview with the official website of the 2014 World Cup.

It was then that ´Felipao´ dared to change the attractive style and touch of the ´Seleção´ with a more aggressive and tactically obedient scheme.

And then with a spot secured for the World Cup in South Korea and Japan, 2002, he made a decision that earned him the reputation of a man who doesn´t care what others think: he left star Romario off the team that then went on to win their fifth title.

Despite the uproar, Scolari made clear that it was done. "It was a choice I made (...) I will not be arguing over it for the rest of my life. It was my decision, period".

A decade later Romario was one of the most enthusiastical in calling for ´Felipao´, calling the era of Menezes a failure.

After winning the 2002 World Cup he gave up command of the Brazilian team citing family reasons, despite the insistence of the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) to continue as coach.

Later that year he took over Portugal and ended up writing one of the best pages of Portuguese football.

First he led Portugal to the final of Euro 2004, losing at home to Greece 1-0 in what he still remembers as his "biggest disappointment in life."

He then led Portugal to a fourth place finish at the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

Other titles that he has won include two Copa Libertadores: in 1995 with Gremio of Porto Alegre and in 1999 with Palmeiras. He returned to Palmeiras in 2012 and left the team after a dismal campaign that culminated in their relegation to the second division.

All this background has made him the man with experience that Brazil was seeking after rejecting the option of a foreign coach like the talented Pep Guardiola.

"We looked for experience. The World Cup is not the time to experiment", José Maria Marin of the CBF has said.

Scolari took command of a renovated Brazilian squad, with Neymar, the young star of Santos, as the figurehead. But the team is without a collective game plan that would put Scolari at ease.

The coach has said that "a great team is made up of a large group. One single player doesn´t make the difference. Pele had other players behind him that gave him support".

But so far the results of the Seleção -one win, three draws and one defeat- arouse anxiety among the fans who booed the team off the field in their last friendly, a 2-2 draw with Chile at the Mineirao stadium in Belo Horizonte.

"We did not play well. If we had played better the fans would have reacted better (...) I have nothing to criticize, when we play well they will have another reaction", he said after the match.

But he did promise "a more engaged team" in the Confederations. "We do not have time. Before the tournament (Confederations) we have two friendlies and 15 days of training", he said then.

The ´Seleção´ will play against England on June 2 at the Maracaná in Rio, and against France on June 9 at the Arena Gremio stadium in Porto Alegre. Then they finish up their preparation for the Confederations Cup.

´Felipao´ is not only the man of experience and character that the fans cried for from the bleachers while also booing former coach Menezes. He is also a man who can get angry as demonstrated in 2007 when during a Portugal match against Serbia he punched Ivica Dragutinovic at the end of the game. He was sanctioned by UEFA and he was put under observation for two years.
