Sabella wants to test Argentina without Messi

Argentina coach Alejandro Sabella said this Tuesday that if Lionel Messi fails to come back from his injury for the match with Colombia on June 7 in the South American qualifiers "it will be a good opportunity" to test the team without its star player.

"Hopefully we have Lionel, he will be welcomed. Otherwise, it is a way of seeing the team without him, but hopefully he is here", Sabella told reporters on arrival at Ezeiza International Airport after a tour of Europe.
The FC Barcelona striker will be sidelined two to three weeks due to a muscle injury in his right leg, said the club on Tuesday.

"Lionel is the best in the world, what team wouldn´t want a Messi? But (if he is not here) it is a way to see how to play without him", added the coach.

Sabella said the best player in the world "has little time left for the match against Colombia".

Argentina plays on June 7 against Colombia in Buenos Aires and on the 11th against Ecuador in Quito.

Messi, winner of the last four Balón de Oro awards, left the field Sunday in the 72nd minute with an injury. His team went on to beat Atlético Madrid 2-1.

Argentina leads the qualifiers with 24 points, followed by Ecuador (20), Colombia (19) and Chile (15).

The South American qualifiers award four berths to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, and the fifth place team a playoff against the fifth place team from Asia.

Riquelme: "Ahora pensamos en Colón"

BUENOS AIRES -- Juan Román Riquelme, el hombre que volvió a disipar fantasmas sobre su estado físico convirtiendo el golazo que abrió la clasificación de Boca a cuartos de final de la Libertadores en el corazón del Pacaembú, puso en la mira a Colón más que en el próximo rival de la Copa, Newell´s Old Boys.

"Ahora tenemos que dormir, comer, entrenar y pensar en Colón", sostuvo, cuando se le consultó sobre Newell´s, que eliminó a Vélez en Liniers.

Tenía la voz débil por el cansancio y el sueño al acceder a hablar en el hall de Ezeiza ni bien bajó, a las 7.30 de la mañana, del avión que trasladó al plantel desde San Pablo, donde otra vez Boca puso su sello copero eliminando a Corinthians, el campeón.

"Hemos clasificado en un estadio muy difícil y enfrentamos a un gran equipo. Necesitábamos una alegría como esta", contó Riquelme.

Recién sobre el final del encuentro con los periodistas habló tangencialmente del conjunto rosarino, próximo objetivo en la Copa, aunque priorizando hoy por hora el choque con Colón, para levantar el nivel en el torneo local. "Tenemos que mejorar en el torneo local. En la Copa Liberadores estamos bien y seguimos en la Copa Argentina así que tan mal no estamos, pero primero tenemos que ganar en el campeonato argentino y después pensaremos en Newell´s que seguramente será tan difícil como Colón".

Ronaldinho still hopeful of World Cup call up

Ronaldinho Gaúcho hopes to be in Brazil´s national team squad for the 2014 World Cup, after missing out the Confederations Cup list.

The decision was reportedly made by Scolari after Ronaldinho came late to join Brazil´s squad for the friendly game against Chile.

The Atlético Mineiro star denies that allegation, he said in a press conference: "I didn´t arrive late, I came at the right time, as usual. There was no talk, I just didn´t play well that game."

He was asked if he is still motivated to play for his club, he said: "I am more motivated than ever, I really wanted to be called up, but it didn´t happen. That motivates me to play even more so I am remembered in the future."

"There is still a long time until the World Cup, and it is still my goal."

He added that he is happy at Atlético Mineiro: "I am feeling more and more at home here, I hope to make the fans happy, winning this [Libertadores] title and taking the team as far as possible."

Duelo de colombianos por las semis en México

El Santos Laguna, finalista de la Liga de Concacaf, enfrentará mañana jueves al Cruz Azul, flamante campeón de la Copa MX, en el partido de ida de las semifinales del torneo Clausura 2013 mexicano.

Este enfrentamiento, a visita recíproca, será un desafío entre el mejor ataque del torneo, el del Cruz Azul con 35 anotaciones, ante la mejor defensa de la liga, la del Santos, que recibió trece tantos en 17 encuentros de temporada regular.

A la luz de la estadística de la temporada, el Cruz Azul-Santos Laguna se perfila como la serie más pareja de las semifinales porque ambos llegaron a la liguilla con ocho triunfos, cinco empates y tres derrotas cada uno.

La otra semifinal, que arranca este miércoles, enfrenta al América, segundo lugar de la temporada y al Monterrey, noveno de la clasificación.

Ambos llegan en un buen momento anímico. El Cruz Azul conquistó el título de la Copa MX y el Santos Laguna llegó a la final de la Liga de Campeones de Concacaf, aunque la perdió ante el Monterrey.

En los banquillos se verá un duelo de técnicos entre el portugués Pedro Caixinha, con el Santos, y el mexicano Guillermo Vázquez, con el Cruz Azul.

Caixinha tiene la duda con el goleador mexicano Oribe Peraltapor lesión, aunque del lado del rival se presenta una situación parecida con el argentino Mariano Pavone, aunque será al último minuto cuando se decida la participación de ambos.

Fortalecen al Santos el guardameta mexicano Oswaldo Sánchez, el defensa panameño Felipe Baloy, el centrocampista español Marc Crosas, el argentino Mauro Cejas, y en el ataque están el colombiano Carlos Darwin Quintero y el estadounidense Herculez Gómez.

En el Cruz Azul cuentan con el portero mexicano Jesús Corona, el defensa colombiano Luis Amaranto Perea, los centrocampistas argentinos Christian Giménez y Nicolás Bertolo, y en el ataque el mismo Pavone y el colombiano Teófilo Gutiérrez.

El partido de ida se jugará este jueves a las 21.00 hora local, en el estadio Corona del Territorio Santos Modelo en la norteña ciudad de Torreón, y la vuelta tendrá lugar el domingo en el estadio Azul de la capital mexicana.

El vencedor de esta serie se enfrentará al ganador del duelo del América ante el Monterrey por el título de campeón del torneo Clausura 2013 del fútbol mexicano.

Santa Fe dispuesto a ganarse el cupo a cuartos de final ante Gremio

Un Independiente Santa Fe motivado por su gran campaña en el torneo local y un Gremio de Brasil dispuesto a defender la ventaja del partido de ida en el que se impuso por 2-1 en Porto Alegre, se enfrentarán este jueves en Bogotá por un cupo a los cuartos de final de la Copa Libertadores.

El conjunto local espera aprovechar el buen momento por el que atraviesan jugadores como el argentino Omar Pérez y el delantero local Wilder Medina para remontar el resultado en contra en Brasil y así tener la oportunidad de volver a enfrentar en la siguiente ronda al Real Garcilaso peruano, rival en la fase de grupos. El técnico Wilson Gutiérrez tiene claro que ante Gremio tienen que esforzarse a fondo y mira confiado el buen trabajo ofensivo de Pérez y Medina.

"Me deja tranquilo que nuestros delanteros estén marcando goles, en especial Wilder Medina, así como Omar (Pérez) que también ha vuelto a estar presente en el marcador", aseguró Gutiérrez que, fiel a su costumbre, no haría cambios en la nómina con respecto a la que jugó el partido de ida.

Por su parte, Gerardo Bedoya, quien será titular en el medio campo, ha señalado que su equipo le puede ganar a Gremio "teniendo la pelota y poniendo condiciones en el campo".

Y con respecto al rival, manifestó que seguramente ellos "van a tratar de ser otro equipo, de tener mucho la pelota, pero no se puede desconocer que la altura pega, eso es real".

"Por eso esperamos que Santa Fe tenga su mejor partido", añadió.

Por su parte, el Gremio, que llegó a Bogotá hace una semana con la intención de adaptarse a la altitud de la capital colombiana (2680 metros sobre el nivel del mar), buscará ratificar la ventaja y la experiencia que le ha entregado dos títulos en la Libertadores, en 1983 y 1995.

Los dirigidos por Vanderlei Luxemburgo se han entrenado cada día a doble jornada para no dejarse sorprender del local y para estar a puntos para este jueves.

"Estamos concentrados ahora en la Copa Libertadores. Es el partido más importante y el equipo va a en busca del título", señaló el defensa Gabriel.

"El equipo está preparado para jugar aquí y buscar la clasificación, con todo el respeto, trabajando concentrados", agregó.

La zaga sería González Pirez-Bottinelli

BUENOS AIRES -- El entrenador de River, Ramón Díaz, parece decidido a devolverle la titularidad a Leandro González Pirez, a quien este jueves incluyó en lugar de Jonatan Maidana en el equipo titular que se perfila para visitar a Unión de Santa Fe el domingo.

En la práctica de fútbol de esta mañana, el técnico puso como titular a González Pirez, quien, tras cumplir su fecha de suspensión, compartió la zaga central con Jonathan Bottinelli.

El ex San Lorenzo ingresó en lugar del colombiano Eder Alvarez Balanta, lesionado, mientras que la otra variante en relación con el encuentro ante el conjunto de Floresta será el regreso de Carlos Sánchez, otro que cumplió su fecha de suspensión, por Cristian Ledesma, quien llegó a las cinco amarillas.

Brindisi probó con L. Villalba de "3"

BUENOS AIRES -- Apenas dos cambios obligados hará Miguel Angel Brindisi en Independiente para enfrentar a San Martín de San Juan, el domingo próximo, en un trascendental partido que según el resultado posicionará a ambos equipos en la lucha por la permanencia en la Primera División.

En el entrenamiento de fútbol en el predio de AFA en Ezeiza, Brindisi plantó como lateral izquierdo al juvenil de Reserva Lucas Villalba, reemplazando al suspendido central Cristian Tula, por lo cual Claudio Morel Rodríguez pasó a la zaga junto a Leonel Galeano.

El otro cambio será Fabián Vargas por el suspendido Federico Mancuello. El colombiano, si bien hoy fue resguardado por su tobillo derecho maltrecho, llegaría en condiciones al partido.

Así como el argentino-paraguayo Jonathan Santana ocupó el lugar de Vargas, Adrián Gabbarini estuvo en el arco en reemplazo de Diego Rodríguez, quien padece un estado gripal pero también se especula que jugará ante San Martín el domingo a las 13.10 en el estadio Libertadores de América.

Independiente formará con Diego Rodríguez; Gabriel Vallés, Galeano, Morel Rodríguez, Villalba; Hernán Fredes, Fernando Godoy, Vargas; Daniel Montenegro; Juan Caicedo y Adrián Fernández.

Racing: Luciano Vietto será operado

BUENOS AIRES -- El goleador de Racing, Luciano Vietto, será operado mañana por una hernia inguinal que lo obligará a estar sin jugar unas cuatro semanas.

"Empezó con una pubialgia pero estudios dieron que tiene una pequeña hernia inguinal. Mañana será intervenido y la recuperación es de unas cuatro semanas", explicó Javier Swiatlo, uno de los médicos del plantel.

El viernes, Javier Cámpora reemplazará a Vietto en el partido ante Arsenal.

The ghost at the feast: Luiz Felipe Scolari hopes that dropping Ronaldinho for the Confederations Cup won’t come back to haunt Brazil

If the most unsurprising part of the press conference to announce Brazil’s Confederations Cup squad was the opening rant by never knowingly unsleazy CBF president Jose Maria Marin (“today’s about the Seleção, not about the (CBF) elections,” he wheezed, instantly making it, um, all about the elections), at least Felipão had a few tricks up his sleeve to keep the press pack, and the masses watching live on TV, enthralled.

There was no place for Kaká, Alexandre Pato of Corinthians, Chelsea’s Ramires, and, most perplexingly of all, Ronaldinho Gáucho, whose form for Atlético Minero over the last twelve months has been the stuff of myth and legend. The most surprising inclusion was Ronaldinho’s pixyish teammate Bernard, a tiny winger/attacking midfielder rumoured to be on the brink of a move to Borussia Dortmund.

While Kaká and Pato, neither guaranteed starters for their clubs, are understandable omissions, Ramires and Ronaldinho may have paid the price for recent indiscretions. An injured Ramires failed to arrive on the right day for the game against Russia in March, while Ronaldinho rolled up to the squad get together for the recent friendly against Chile twenty five minutes late. Confusing necessary discipline with perceived slights to his authority, Felipão is likely to have placed black marks next to both players’ names.

At least Ramires can say he lost out to some stiff competition. With Lazio’s Hernanes, Fernando of Grêmio, Bayern’s Luis Gustavo and Corinthians’ Paulinho, not to mention the overlooked Lucas Leiva and the injured Sandro, Brazil are well stocked at volante (defensive midfielder).

Ronaldinho’s absence may be further explained by age (he will be 34 by the time the World Cup comes around), his less than thrilling friendly displays under Scolari, and by the theory that Brazil will aim to play a more intense, pressure based game as the Mundial grows near, with younger legs and hearts. It is to be presumed that Felipão has been spending his weekends glued to events in Munich and Dortmund.

On the surface, Ronaldinho’s languid grace and smarts hardly fit such a model. But ironically he has been following exactly such a philosophy at Atlético, flanked by the pace of the aforementioned Bernard and Diego Tardelli (who had been an outside bet for a call-up), with the gangling Jô as the reference point up front. And surely only the stoniest of hearts could peruse a list containing the names of Hulk, and São Paulo’s Jadson, but missing that of Ronaldinho, and not die a little inside.

At least Bernard is an intriguing choice. A devastating bundle of pace and energy, the diminutive youngster was the breakout success of last year’s Brasileirão, and started this year’s Libertadores campaign in equally blistering fashion, including a memorable hat trick away against Arsenal de Sarandi in his first professional game outside Brazil. Niggling injuries have restricted his performances in recent months, but clearly not enough to dissuade Dortmund, who may view him as a flyweight replacement for the departing Mario Götze. Those wishing to see Bernard in action should seek out the goal he created against Grêmio last year – flicking the ball over the head of a first, then a second defender, before hitting a perfect volleyed cross onto Jô’s boot. It was the kind of jump-off-the-sofa-and-spill-your-drink moment that the Seleção has sorely lacked in recent years.

Bernard will be joined in the attacking midfielder department by Oscar and Lucas, with Neymar of Santos/Barcelona/Real Madrid/Bayern Munich, Internacional’s Leandro Damião, and Fred further forward. Despite some success under Felipão, surely only the frailest of defender’s knees will tremble at the sight of the Fluminense striker bearing down on goal.

Atlético Mineiro’s scintillating form was further rewarded when captain, and strapping zagueiro, Réver, was also called up, beating out his friend and Belo Horizontino rival, Cruzeiro’s even more strapping Dedé, once a rumoured Manchester United target. Réver will likely remain a reserve though, with Thiago Silva and David Luiz the starters, and Bayern’s Dante third choice. In goal Julio Cesar, Jefferson, and Diego Cavalieri make up an age before beauty triumverate.

Eleven of the squad are based in Brazil, and many are in their early to mid-twenties. Since taking over at the end of the year, Felipão’s squads have lacked rhyme or reason, often resembling a game of pin the tail on the Seleção squad list. With this selection at least there is a clearer commitment to youth, a wager made that these players will grow enough in the next twelve months to make Brazil a force in 2014. The Confederations Cup will be part of that growth.

But if things do not go as planned, Ronaldinho will be the Banquo’s ghost at the World Cup feast. At least Felipão, who suffered similar flak when leaving Romario at home in 2002, is ready for the pressure. “I have to be,” he said. “If it doesn’t work out, I’ll pay the price. You (journalists) will do what you have to do.”
