Strange mood for Brazil´s Confederations Cup crowds

Hosts face Uruguay in semi-finals

25 June ~ Brazil´s 4-2 win over Italy in Salvador on Saturday booked a semi-final place in the Confederations Cup. There is greater optimism about the prospects of Luiz Felipe Scolari´s team after earlier group wins against Japan and Mexico, especially as Neymar has rediscovered his form, scoring in each of the games and picking up three Man of the Match awards. However, concerns continue over the team´s propensity to ship goals against leading sides, with the margin of victory flattering against opponents missing Andrea Pirlo and Daniele de Rossi.

Tensions were high ahead of Saturday´s game owing to clashes between protestors and police when Nigeria faced Uruguay two days before. Burnt-out buses gave way to a more festive weekend atmosphere, with Brazilian yellow vastly outnumbering the sparse Italian support at the lakeside Fonte Nova venue. The new arena has replaced the previous stadium that had been effectively condemned after seven fans died following a collapse of terracing in November 2007.

Locals were largely excluded from this FIFA jamboree. In a city where 90 per cent of the population is considered to be of African descent the crowd at the Fonte Nova was almost exclusively white – residents were reduced to the status of passive onlookers as fans streamed to and from the game. Few had tickets, they said, and even the neighbourhood bars were not feeling any dividend, with bar owner Renata Silva acknowledging that "business is really slow, this cup has not helped me at all".

A report in Salvador´s Correio newspaper highlighted the different make-up of fans at this game: "They applaud throw-ins, clap for goal-kicks, shout and cheer at times even for the announcement of the attendance. To be exact there were 48,874 people there applauding themselves."

Along with a strong turn-out from evangelical groups, one isolated protestors made his point with a placard: "If they are going to import Cuban doctors to improve our health system I want to have Swedish politicians to end the corruption in Brazil." The wider protests during the Confederations Cup have been of uneven intensity, with the most serious disturbances in Brazil´s south-eastern cities: Belo Horizonte, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. In Salvador the appetite to take to the streets has been offset in part by people leaving the city for traditional São João parties in the interior of the state.

A survey by TV network Rede Globo also showed that many of the protestors in Brazil are students or have a higher than average level of education and income. As with the Brazil v Italy game the poorest Brazilians have been only marginally involved so far. The unrest has deflected attention from FIFA´s own difficulties with ticketing, training facilities and other problems caused by heavy rainfall in Recife and Salvador.

Mario Balotelli has been a major hit in the Brazilian north-east. The AC Milan striker was the only Italian to go for a walkabout in Salvador, visiting a social project he supports there. This prompted coach Cesare Prandelli to make a clumsy attempt at joke that he later apologised for: "He is the only one who had permission because his colour is a little different than ours." Balotelli´s premature injury-enforced return home has been widely lamented, while making the Azzurri´s semi-final task against Spain even more daunting. With Balotelli gone, Uruguay´s Luis Suárez is now the player most likely to upset expectations of a Brazil v Spain final.

Mundial Sub 20: Chile, el talentoso tapado

En Sudamérica las tornas están cambiando. Si históricamente Brasil y Argentina eran las dominadoras del continente americano, en los últimos años le están saliendo competidores cada vez más fuertes. En la última Copa América las dos grandes no consiguieron pasar de cuartos, y fue Uruguay con su estrellato de otrora la que consiguió alzarse con el campeonato. Previamente, en el Mundial de Sudáfrica, fueron también los charrúas los mejores colocados del continente al finalizar cuartos.

Aunque esta decadencia de la verde-amarela y la albiceleste no se limita a la categoría absoluta, en sus categorías inferiores la balanza está más equilibrada que nunca. La prueba patente, es la ausencia por primera vez en la historia, tanto de Argentina como de Brasil en una cita mundialista, sea de la categoría que sea.

El buen hacer de selecciones como Colombia, Paraguay, Uruguay o Chile ha dejado sin Mundial Sub-20 a las dos grandes. Hoy analizaremos a una de estas selecciones, la Chile de Mario Salas, un combinado que va a Turquía para dar guerra.

Cuando a principios de año arrancaba el Sudamericano Sub-20, nadie podía presagiar lo que el campeonato disputado en Argentina depararía. Chile sorprendía a todos en la primera fase al vencer los cuatro partidos del Grupo A ante Colombia, Paraguay, Argentina y Bolivia. Chile llegaba al hexagonal como una de las grandes favoritas, pero la selección dirigida por Mario Salas sufrió más de la cuenta y terminó cuarta en esta última fase, la última de acceso a la cita mundialista.

La selección chilena llegó a la última jornada del hexagonal jugándose todo ante Perú, si los blanquirrojos ganaban, Chile se quedaba sin Mundial. Un empate a uno con gol de Rabello para la Roja sub-20 certificó el pase in extremis de Chile a su sexto Mundial de la categoría.

Chile dejó buenas sensaciones en el Sudamericano, siendo la única selección en ganar, y dos veces, a la campeona, Colombia. Pese a la decepción final en el torneo continental, Chile llega a este Mundial sin las presiones de otras, y eso puede ser una ventaja. Jugadores, que pese a su juventud, ya han demostrado saber competir a alto nivel.

En la zaga destacan dos futbolistas de la U de Chile, Valber Huerta e Igor Lichnovsky, pese a no ser regulares en la formación del club universitario, sí que han gozado de minutos, sobre todo el polaco Igor, el cual casualmente no es de origen polaco, su abuelo es esloveno, y su padre austriaco, la globalización es lo que tiene.

La línea mejor dotada de esta Rojita –sí, la selección española no es la única con esta nomenclatura- es la del medio del campo. La forman jugadores que han llamado a las puertas del fútbol europeo, e incluso en algún caso ya militan en clubes del viejo continente, como Rabello (Sevilla), Cuevas (Chelsea) o Bravo (Inter Zaprešić).

La medular chilena tiene mucha llegada con Nico Maturana, un trequartista que empieza a coger protagonismo en la U de Chile. Aunque si hay que escoger a un jugador primordial en esta parte del terreno de juego –que me perdone Bryan Rabello, máximo asistente chileno del Sudamericano- ese es Sebastián Martínez, un futbolista polivalente y encargado de llevar el timón del conjunto dirigido por Mario Salas.

En la delantera chilena se esconden tres perlas. La primera, Nico Castillo, titular en esta selección a base de goles, hizo cinco en el Sudamericano, y uno de los jugadores más prometedores del combinado nacional. La rumorología dice que Castillo jugará el año que viene en la Serie A, la Samp está muy interesada. Junto a Nico actuará Ángelo Henríquez, futbolista del Manchester United, cedido esta temporada al Wigan, con el cual llegó a hacer un gol en la Premier League este año. Por si fuera poco, en el banco esperará su opor-tunidad Felipe Mora, autor de cuatro goles en la Pinatar Arena Cup, triangular que enfrentó a España U20, Uzbekistán U20 y Chile U20.

Los españoles alzaron el título pero Chile dejó buenas sensaciones ofensivas empatando a cuatro con la España dirigida por Celades, hasta la llegada de Lopetegui. La preparatoria chilena de este Mundial tiene un gran balance, con victorias ante la RD Congo, Australia, e incluso, un 6-0 a la selección absoluta de Tahití. Las expectativas no pueden ser mejores.

Chile llega como una de las tapadas a la cita mundialista, el objetivo de los sudamericanos será el de pasar la fase de grupos por cuarta vez en su historia –en dos de las tres anteriores llegó a semifinales- y para ello tendrá que doblegar a Egipto, Inglaterra e Irak en el Grupo E. A priori, los chilenos no deberían tener problemas para alcanzar la fase eliminatoria, y a partir de ahí a disfrutar. El público chileno debe estar tranquilo, hay cantera, hay esperanza

Golazo’s end of season awards (Torneo Final 2013)

With the Torneo Final all wrapped up, we look back on an eventful season which has witnessed Newell’s Old Boys deservedly lift the trophy and still in with a shot of the Copa Libertadores, Independiente descend into the Nacional B for the first time in their history, much to the amusement of everyone else in Argentina, and 2 big clasicos return for next season with the promotion of Rosario Central and Gimnasia. As always we decide on the best manager, the best player and the best goal in this year’s Torneo Final plus all the other talking points from a San Lorenzo season ticket holder in the top job at the Vatican to a transvestite in his/her underwear in the stands. Good, bad and sometimes very ugly Argentinian football never fails to disappoint when it comes to stories!

The big news globally during the Torneo Final was Pope Francis entering the Vatican, the first Latin American Pope and more importantly, a life long San Lorenzo fan. This generated mountains of headlines but all that has mattered on the pitch has been his sides incredible run of form since. 6 wins on the bounce and 11 unbeaten saw San Lorenzo mount a late surge up the table to qualify for the Copa Sudamericana and look well placed for the Torneo Inicial.

Then we had the Pablo Migliore saga. The San Lorenzo keeper was sensationally arrested following a match and jailed for 40 days in connection with a murder. The chief suspect was, La Doce’s (Boca Juniors barra bravas) second in command, and Migliore was suspected of aiding him in his bid to avoid arrest. Eventually a deal was struck and Migliore was released, only to have his contract with San Lorenzo scrapped, and so he decided to make a quick exit from Argentina and promptly signed for Dinamo Zagreb.

Independiente’s relegation was shrouded in mystery for much of the season as conspiracy theories flew around. Their relegation rivals claimed that Julio Grondona and the AFA were in cahoots with El Rojo and would attempt to save them and then Racing lost at home to Quilmes, a result that hindered Independiente’s chances of survival amid suggestions that they threw the game to guarantee the relegation of their closest rivals. Either way one of the biggest teams in South American football will be playing its football outside the top flight next season, like River Plate in 2011.

Replacing Union, Independiente and San Martin will be Rosario Central, Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata and Olimpo. Two huge derbies to look forward to when Central clash with Newell’s Old Boys and Gimnasia meet Estudiantes – something that I’m sure the AFA and the police are not looking forward to quite as much.

MANAGER/TEAM OF THE SEASON

This could only go to one man really and that is the saviour of Newell’s Old Boys, Gerardo Martino. Having taken over the job with Newell’s in relegation trouble their turnaround in fortunes has been meteoric. As a player Martino was in the Newell’s side that last won the championship in 1992, then under the leadership of Marcelo Bielsa, and now Martino has followed in his mentors footsteps and could yet go one better if they were to lift the Copa Libertadores (their semi final first leg against Atletico Miniero is in 1 week) . Newell’s have been a breath of fresh air to watch with their attacking and somewhat carefree approach to defending but with the highest number of goals scored for 18 championships, it has been successful. Martino has recruited astutely and got his side playing well and leaves Newell’s in great shape. He has already announced that he will be departing after this season and I am sure that a top job beckons. Links to several jobs in Spain, even reportedly on Real Madrid’s list albeit below Carlo Ancelotti, suggest that Martino will be eating at Europe’s top table soon enough. (more on Newell’s here)

PLAYER OF THE SEASON

There have perhaps been other contenders but with Newell’s sweeping aside all in front of them in the league and the Copa Libertadores, it is difficult not to look past them and more importantly, Ignacio Scocco. The nippy front man has once again topped the goal scoring charts, as well as scoring 5 in the Copa Libertadores and, like his manager, is destined to move on. Scocco wants to move to Europe to improve his chances of representing Argentina and at 28 is at a prime age to do so and make an immediate impact. After the Libertadores is resolved it will be interesting to see where Scocco ends up.

GOAL OF THE SEASON

There have been some wonderful strikes in this year’s Torneo Final, looking back over the previous monthly awards. February and March gave us virtually identical, spectacular long range volleys, first by Carlos Carbonero of Arsenal, and then, Wilfredo Olivero of Argentinos Juniors, and it is impossible to say which is better. However, I am going to go with Carbonero’s purely on the basis that he smashed in another thunderous drive in the final weekend to prove that it wasn’t a one off! Argentinos fans unhappy with toothless performance

Losing 3-1 to Belgrano and getting dragged into the relegation fight one fan decided to protest by throwing a set of false teeth at manager, Caruso Lombardi. Perhaps they had the desired effect as Argentinos avoided the drop and with Caruso still in charge things are never going to be dull.

In my local clasico between Nueva Chicago and Almirante Brown we witnessed one of the strangest taunts as Chicago fans brought along a transvestite and dressed him/her up in an Almirante shirt to join in with the songs. Sadly this must have worked as Chicago won the game 1-0 but still finished bottom of the league.

Valencia still confident over Dos Santos

Valencia remain confident of signing Giovani dos Santos in the summer, although Real Mallorca president Llorenc Serra-Ferrer has said six or seven clubs, reported to include LA Galaxy, are still in the race for him.

Dos Santos, 24, appears certain to leave relegated Mallorca given his high salary and the six goals and seven assists he amassed in 29 Primera Division games last term.

The Balearics club’s chief told Cadena Ser Mallorca there had been a lot of interest in the Mexico international attacker, adding: “There are six or seven teams interested in Giovani, without exaggerating.

“Some have put a figure to us, but the player was not interested. Other Spanish clubs - high level ones - have put in another figure, but also asked if we would take players in part-exchange. We will listen, weigh things up and then decide.”

Marca reported that Mallorca had accepted an €8 million offer from LA Galaxy, only for Dos Santos to turn down the move.

Valencia have reportedly bid €4 million, a figure Mallorca - and the player’s former club Tottenham, who retain 50% of his rights - view as insufficient.

Valencia sporting director Braulio Vazquez told Levante Television that current Los Che player Andres Guardado had been trying to persuade international colleague Dos Santos to join, but that his club were continuing to analyse their transfer options.

“Guardado is a good ambassador for us,” he said. “I do not know if Giovani will escape us. The market in Valencia is one now, and another on August 20, when other players could come in other circumstances.”

Villarreal’s interest is complicated by the club’s poor institutional relationship with Mallorca, which stems from a falling-out over European qualification in 2011.

However, Dos Santos may like the chance to team up again with coach Marcelino, with the pair having worked together successfully as Racing Santander avoided relegation during in the second half of the 2010-11 campaign.

Russian outfits Rubin Kazan and CSKA Moscow and Spanish clubs Atletico Madrid and Real Betis are also reported to be interested in Dos Santos.

No le renovarán contrato a Santana

BUENOS AIRES -- Independiente decidió no renovarle el contrato a Jonathan Santana.

La comisión directiva decidió no renovarle el contrato al mediocampista, a pesar de la intención del entrenador, Miguel Angel Brindisi, de contar con el jugador para la próxima temporada en el Nacional B.

El DT le comunicó ayer la decisión al volante central proveniente de Libertad de Paraguay, y de esta manera el 30 de junio dejará de pertenecer al club.

Uno de los principales pedidos de Brindisi a Cantero fue tratar de retener a varios de los referentes del plantel ´rojo´.

En la lista, figuraban los nombres de Fabián Vargas, Claudio Morel Rodríguez, Cristian Tula, Daniel Montenegro y Jonathan Santana.

A pesar de que prácticamente el DT no utilizó al volante en el último tramo del Torneo Final, quería retenerlo en el equipo por considerarlo una pieza clave dentro del grupo.

La comisión directiva desde un comienzo decidió no renovarle el contrato debido a sus escasas actuaciones y a su alto salario, pero al encontrarse con el pedido del entrenador, decidió reveer la decisión, aunque no lograron un acuerdo que dejara satisfechas a todas la partes.

Santana, nacido en Argentina y luego nacionalizado paraguayo, jugó en total 18 partidos con la camiseta de Independiente y convirtió tres goles: dos en la Copa Sudamericana y el restante en el último clásico ante Racing.

Independiente: ¿seguirá Vargas?

BUENOS AIRES -- Daniel Comba, representante del mediocampista colombiano, aseguró que el futbolista "no tiene problemas en jugar en la B Nacional" y que la semana que viene "habrá novedades" sobre su futuro.

Vargas, quien está en Colombia, fue uno de los jugadores de mejor rendimiento en una de las peores temporadas de la institución de Avellaneda, que finalizó con el primer descenso de su historia.

"La decisión pasa por el jugador", expresó el representante al ser consultado por Télam sobre quién decidirá el futuro del experimentado volante que además en el país actuó en Boca Juniors.

Y agregó: "Estamos hablando, no hay trabas ni complicaciones, pero recién la semana que viene habrá novedades al respecto".

Fabián Vargas también suena como posible refuerzo de Boca Juniors.

Arsenal busca siete refuerzos

BUENOS AIRES -- El presidente de Arsenal, Julio Ricardo Grondona, admitió este martes que buscan "siete refuerzos" y, entre ellos, "un nueve de calibre".
"La idea es tener veintidós jugadores y subir algunos pibes. Traer hay que traer para sumar, no relleno. Necesitamos un arquero, tres mediocampistas y dos delanteros. Los nombres de los refuerzos ya están hablados con Gustavo Alfaro. Estamos trabajando. Cuando firmen se dan a conocer. Necesitamos mínimo siete jugadores, ojalá podamos traer un nueve de calibre", reconoció el presidente del club del Viaducto, en declaraciones para AM 860.

Por otra parte, Grondona hijo precisó que se desvincularán "(Pablo) Lugüercio, (Diego) Torres, (el chileno Gonzalo) Espinoza, (Danilo) Gerlo y (Javier) Burrai".

Además, el dirigente informó que tampoco continuará en el club Mariano González, dado que vino en su momento sólo para reemplazar al lesionado Emilio Zelaya.

En cuanto al interés del Bayern Munich por el zaguero Lisandro López, Grondona aclaró que no va a prosperar porque acordaron con el Benfica finiquitar la transferencia del ciento por ciento de los derechos federativos una vez que lleguen a Portugal y tienen muy buena relación con los lusitanos.

Cauteruccio: "Un balance positivo"

BUENOS AIRES -- El delantero de Quilmes, Martín Cauteruccio, en la mira de San Lorenzo para convertirse en uno de los refuerzos de ataque para la próxima temporada, afirmó hoy que sus deseos pasan por "progresar en lo deportivo y en lo económico".

"Lo que quiero es progresar en lo deportivo y en lo económico, y estoy en un buen momento para eso. Es por ello que espero tranquilo, ya que trabajo, durante el próximo año, voy a tener", destacó Cauteruccio en una entrevista con el programa radial Deportivo Télam.

"Del interés de San Lorenzo tengo más información por los medios, ya que mi representante Angel `Matute` Morales todavía no me mencionó nada al respecto", aclaró.

La propiedad del pase del uruguayo se divide en partes iguales entre Quilmes y Nacional de Montevideo, club éste en el que pasó 12 años de su vida futbolística. "Ni a Uruguay ni a Nacional pienso volver por ahora. Si me voy de Argentina lo haré a otro país que no sea el mío, justamente por eso que digo de querer un progreso profesional", apuntó.

"Es que el balance que hago al cabo de la temporada me da resultado positivo, más allá de los momentos malos que pasé en algún momento, cuando perdí la titularidad por una lesión, lo que derivó en bajas actuaciones", argumentó.

Al respecto Cauteruccio sostuvo que aquella posibilidad de pasar a Independiente, que coincidió justamente con su bajón futbolístico, tuvo "menos incidencia en eso que la lesión (pubialgia), aunque hay que reconocer que golpeó un poco".

"Pero uno debe aceptar esas situaciones y hacerse cargo. En ese aspecto el técnico, Omar De Felippe, me trató muy bien, y le estoy agradecido por eso. Es que lo más difícil en el fútbol es mantener la regularidad", reconoció.

"Por eso me sorprendió que De Felippe se vaya ahora de Quilmes, ya que estamos en un buen momento, en el que se alcanzaron los objetivos propuestos para este final de temporada", admitió.

De aquel polémico partido con Racing que Quilmes ganó 1 a 0 con un gol suyo, el atacante de 26 años remarcó que la conquista se debió a "una buena definición" propia. "Elegí pensar de esa manera porque aquel encuentro fue muy hablado, antes y después de jugarse".

"Si ahora reapareciera un interés de Independiente por mi pase debería analizar lo que vengo sosteniendo desde que comenzamos la charla: si representa para mí un progreso deportivo y económico", apreció.
