Sunderland in advanced talks over Peruzzi

Remarkably, Sunderland have emerged as leaders in the race to sign Argentinian International right back, Gino Peruzzi. Having previously seen the likes of Manchester City and Inter Milan report an interest it seems Paolo Di Canio’s outfit are now in pole position and are in advanced talks with his club, Velez Sarsfield. The player himself mentioned this on Velez Radio some days ago but was confirmed by Vice-President, Julio Baldomar. Having made a name for himself in the 2011 Copa Libertadores, when he marked Neymar out of the game Peruzzi is now seen as the future Argentinian right back and so the arrival of the 21-year-old to Sunderland would be a major coup.

Peruzzi has been speaking to former Newcastle player and Velez General Manager, Cristian Bassedas about the move. Not sure asking a Newcastle player for an opinion on Sunderland is the wisest of moves but Bassedes appears to have spoken favourably. Peruzzi told Ole!, ”It’s beautiful, especially since in my opinion it’s one of the best leagues because of the tempo played there. I think English football is the most competitive. Yes, Bassedas told me about the city, the people, that there is a lot of respect, he said something about the team. He told me that he liked to play there. Edinson Cavani, contento con Uruguay

SALVADOR -- El artillero Edinson Cavani, autor de los dos goles de la selección de Uruguay que perdió frente a Italia en definición por penales en el partido por el tercer puesto de la Copa Confederaciones, afirmó que los Celestes se van del torneo con la cabeza alta.

"Nos vamos con la cabeza alta. (Gianluiggi) Buffon (el portero italiano) estuvo muy bien e hizo la diferencia en los penales", afirmó Cavani en el estadio Arena Fonte Nova, de la nororiental ciudad brasileña de Salvador.

Buffon paró los remates de los uruguayos Diego Forlán, Martín Cáceres y Walter Gargano, mientras que el portero uruguayo Fernando Muslera le detuvo el lanzamiento a Mattia De Sciglio.

"Italia demostró que es una gran selección y Uruguay creo que dejó en claro que también tiene buenos futbolistas", agregó.

Cavani, jugador del Napoli, fue el máximo goleador de la última Liga italiana con 29 goles.

"Lo que nos deja más contentos es que estamos volviendo al nivel que mostramos en el Mundial de Sudáfrica y en la Copa América de Argentina", destacó el goleador.

Uruguay ocupó el cuarto puesto en Sudáfrica 2010 y ganó la Copa América de Argentina 2011, pero tras un buen inicio de las eliminatorias sudamericanas para el Mundial de Brasil 2014 cayó su nivel, ganó solo cuatro de los últimos 21 puntos que disputó y su pasaje está comprometido.

"Tenemos por delante partidos muy importantes en las eliminatorias y por ello el nivel que tuvimos en este torneo nos deja contentos", afirmó el delantero.

Cavani (en dos oportunidades) y los italianos Davide Astori y Alessandro Diamanti marcaron los goles en el tiempo reglamentario.

LUGANO: "NOS FALTÓ POCO"

Diego Lugano, defensa y capitán de la selección de Uruguay, afirmó que a los Celestes les faltó poco para llegar a una medalla en la Copa Confederaciones.

"No estamos contentos por la derrota pero hicimos un buen torneo y nos faltó poco para llegar a una medalla", afirmó el defensa en el estadio Arena Fonte Nova, de la nororiental ciudad brasileña de Salvador.

Lugano destacó los "muy buenos partidos" que a su juicio jugó la selección uruguaya frente a Brasil (derrota 1-2 en semifinales) y contra Italia.

"Mejoramos en el torneo la imagen con relación a lo que veníamos haciendo en las eliminatorias sudamericanas que, además, son muy duras", agregó el capitán Celeste.

"Nos quedan por delante cuatro finales" dijo, en referencia a las últimas jornadas de las eliminatorias en las cuales Uruguay visitará a Perú y Ecuador y recibirá en Montevideo a Colombia y Argentina.
