Tabarez focused on crucial qualifiers

Uruguay head coach Oscar Tabarez has immediately turned his attention to World Cup qualifying following the Confederations Cup.

Although Tabarez said he was ´sad´ that Uruguay failed to claim third place at the Confederations Cup, losing the play-off to Italy 3-2 on penalties, the 66-year-old coach made it clear his team´s priority is their four World Cup qualifiers in September and October.

Uruguay sit fifth in CONMEBOL´s World Cup qualifying standings, which would only earn them a two-legged play-off against the Asian Football Confederation´s fifth-best team, and Tabarez wants his side to push into the top four to earn automatic qualification to Brazil 2014.

"After a friendly game with Japan (in August), we are going to focus on World Cup qualifying," Tabarez said.

"We have four more games and for us all of them will be finals because we are going to play Peru, that is a direct rival, and later against three teams that are in the top of the table.

"It is very difficult but this group has big experience ... that could allow us to reach our goal."

After their match against Peru, Uruguay will face Colombia, travel to Ecuador and host Argentina in their final three games of the CONMEBOL group.

Uruguay just missed out in Sunday´s third-place play-off against Italy, coming from behind twice through Edinson Cavani to draw 2-2 but Gianluigi Buffon made three saves for the Italians to clinch victory in the penalty shootout.

"We wanted the third place, we feel sad because we didn´t get it but nobody can deny that we overcome difficulties," Tabarez said.

"We put everything while facing a great team, we came from behind two times but all these things are now part of our experience and we will try to get advantage of it in the future."

Speaking after the game, Cavani, who along with Luis Suarez converted his penalty, paid tribute to Italy´s captain Buffon.

"Buffon is a great goalkeeper and it is not because I said it," Cavani said.

"He has demonstrated during his career that he is a champion so congratulations to him and to Italy because it was a good match played in a high intensity and they deserved to win."

Ramos unfazed by Brazil loss

Sergio Ramos says Spain´s national team have a ´clear conscience´ and tried their best in their Confederations Cup final defeat to Brazil.

Brazil claimed their third consecutive Confederations Cup title on Sunday thanks to a brace from Fred, who scored in the opening two minutes of both halves, while Neymar hit the back of the net just before half-time.

Sunday´s result was Spain´s first defeat in a competitive fixture since a 1-0 loss to Switzerland at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa but despite having seen a 29-game unbeaten streak come to an end, Ramos played down the result, arguing they had to lose one day.

"We have gained a lot of important achievements and one day, the moment has to arrive when you don´t win," Ramos told Spanish newspaper AS.

"We aren´t robots.

"Our conscience is clear because we gave the best we had."

Ramos, who missed a penalty in the 54th minute at the Maracana, also downplayed his failure to score.

When the 27-year-old defender strode to the spot following Marcelo´s trip on Jesus Navas in the penalty area, it raised plenty of eyebrows in Rio de Janeiro with the likes of Andres Iniesta and Xavi available and Ramos´ decision became even more dubious when he struck his spot-kick into the post and wide, effectively ending any slim chance of a comeback from Spain.

"As I say, some days, things just don´t go your way," Ramos said.

"I felt confident.

"I waited until the last moment to see where the ´keeper would dive and I tried to plant it into the bottom corner but the ball went wide.

"It´s one of those things that happen in football, you can´t always win."

Spain head coach Vicente Del Bosque said Brazil were ´a little bit lucky´ to score early in both halves but maintained the hosts were ´deserved winners´.

"They maybe were a little bit lucky with their goals at the start of the first and the second halves," Del Bosque said.

"But I will not make excuses for our loss.

"Brazil are the deserved winners and we have to congratulate them."

Neymar surprised by dominant Brazil

Neymar has admitted even he did not expect such a dominant performance from Brazil in the Confederations Cup final against Spain.

Brazil thumped the reigning world and European champions 3-0 in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday with Fred notching a brace and Neymar also getting on the scoresheet.

The result sent shockwaves around the world as Spain, who had not lost a competitive fixture since the World Cup finals in South Africa three years ago, were humbled by the hosts at the Maracana; a big statement with Brazil 2014 less than a year away.

"The team played very well tonight, even better than we were expecting," Neymar said.

"This is a day that is making us very happy, we have no idea but we know this was a very important win.

"We had this goal and we ended putting the icing on the cake.

"All players like decisive games, special ones, even more so against the best team in the world, we are happy."

Brazil head coach Luiz Felipe Scolari was thrilled with his team´s performance against Spain but the 64-year-old warned his side it will be more difficult next year at the World Cup finals.

While Brazil has been dogged by demonstrations during the Confederations Cup, protesting the amount of money spent on next year´s tournament, Scolari paid tribute to the supporters.

"It was a path that we needed to take but we knew that this match was not even close to what we have to play through next year," Scolari said.

"It´s going to be harder but our path will be a little bit better to walk.

"(The win) is going to create a better situation and better environment.

"Also the support that we take from the crowd inside and outside the pitch is excellent.

"We need to always get this from the country, that way we can evolve and grow with good work."

Colombia Primera A Wrap: Millonarios stay alive

Reigning Colombia Primera A champions Millonarios have kept their hopes of another title alive with a 2-1 win over Santa Fe.

A late brace from Fredy Montero gave Millonarios victory as they continued their bid for a place in the championship final, moving within three points of Group A leaders Santa Fe with a round to play in the semi-final stages of the Primera A.

Santa Fe have 10 points at the top of Group A with Millonarios (seven points), Deportivo Cali (six) and Once Caldas (four) making up the rest of the pool, while in Group B, Deportes Tolima remain top on seven ahead of Deportivo Pasto, Itagui (both six) and Atletico Nacional (four).

The winners of each group will face off for the 2013 Apertura championship – the first half of the Colombian league season – in a two-legged play-off.

Millonarios, who won the 2012 Clausura championship, entered Saturday´s game against Bogata rivals Santa Fe knowing anything but a win would mean they would miss out on the Apertura decider.

The situation got worse for Millonarios in the opening minute when Santa Fe scored thanks to Julian Lalinde´s header after his team-mate Cristian Borja headed the ball back across goal from a free-kick.

But when Borja was shown two yellow cards in three second-half minutes, Santa Fe lost their momentum and Montero equalised for Millonarios in the 77th minute, thrashing a free-kick into the top corner off one step.

Montero´s second goal came six minutes later as he chipped Santa Fe goalkeeper Juan Manuel Leyton to hand Millonarios a crucial victory.

Millonarios will overhaul Santa Fe in the final round of the semi-final stage with a win over Once Caldas, while the latter will need to lose to Deportivo Cali.

In other Colombian league results over the weekend, Once Caldas defeated Cali 2-1, Tolima were held to a 1-1 draw by Atletico Nacional and Itagui won 1-0 away to Pasto.
