Thierry Henry’s heart is with Martinique in the Gold Cup
HANOVER, N.J. — Thierry Henry has the best of not one, not two, but three worlds.
During international soccer competitions, the Red Bulls captain can root for France, Guadeloupe and Martinique.
Henry was born in France. His father comes from Guadeloupe, his mother hails from Martinique.
So when the CONCACAF Gold Cup kicks off this Sunday, which country do you think the former French international will root for?
Martinique, which takes on Canada in the tournament opener at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif. on Sunday at 5:30 p.m. ET
“I’m kind of lucky like that,” Henry said after training on Tuesday. Guadeloupe was in two years ago. Now Martinique is in. Yeah, I’m mixed. I did support Guadeloupe when Guadeloupe was there. I will definitely support Martinique, from my mom’s side. Those two islands have given so much to France. in terms of sports. Not only sports. It is true if you go back in a lot of sports, we in France have a lot of people from the West Indies.”
Both Guadeloupe and Martinique are not members of FIFA because both are members of the overseas department of the French Republic. So the Gold Cup is like their World Cup.
“Don’t get me wrong. If a guy is from Guadeloupe or Martinique, if he is good he will play for the [French] national team,” Henry said. ”Just imagine how crazy it is for a team like Guadeloupe or a team like Martinique to qualify for the Gold Cup. Or Tahiti, still a French territory, going to the Confederations Cup. When you think about it, it’s crazy. They usually don’t have their best players, if you know what I mean. No disrespect to anybody. But I’m than proud to see those guys to qualify for the Gold Cup. Hopefully they’re going perform and make us proud.”
According to special Gold Cup rule, the confederations will only allow players to join either Martinique or Guadeloupe if they have not played for France during the past five years.
Henry, who turns 36 on Aug. 17, represented France at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. So, if he wanted to do such a thing, he still would have to wait another two years. By then he would be a couple of months shy of 38.
“You know what? You actually said it,” Henry said. “Five years, I don’t know if I can wait that long. My body. I don’t know if I will be able to wait five years to be able to play for Guadeloupe or Martinique. I will have a dilemma, too. Which one. I don’t think it will be possible, first of all because of the years and also I like to stay in the middle. I’m actually in the middle of it. All the best to them.”
