Gold Cup: Group A notebook

SEATTLE -- Not only did interim head coach Colin Miller’s team have to endure a last-gasp loss to Martinique, now Canada may face the loss of some key players.

Team captain and midfielder Will Johnson, midfielder Russell Teibert and forward Simeon Jackson most likely will not be available to face Mexico in a CONCACAF Gold Cup Group A encounter on Thursday.

Johnson went home with an illness Wednesday. Teibert is also sick at the team’s hotel and Jackson left to sign a contract with his new club Eintracht Braunschweig, which was recently promoted to the German Bundesliga.

“The plot just got bigger for us,” Miller said on Wednesday. “As a door closes, another slams right in our face. I’m blown away with the bad luck that we’ve had the last week. I must have done something wrong in my lifetime to have this bad luck. But our players are behind us.”

A set of young players with minimal international experience now comprise a significant portion of the roster.

Julian de Guzman is one of the few veterans left on the Gold Cup roster. There is a high possibility that he will wear the captain’s arm band against Mexico.

“To wear the captain’s armband is a huge honor, but at the end of the day we have more than just one captain on the team,” de Guzman said. “A lot of guys have shown great leadership and I think that’s been a huge impact for the team. Whether one or the other has the armband we’ve been able to keep together and lead as a team.”

Canada needs at least a point against Mexico to increase its chances of reaching the quarterfinals in Atlanta.

“Playing against Mexico is like playing one of the biggest teams in the world,” de Guzman said. “This is a great motivation to us.”

At the same time, Miller wants his players to see this as another match.

“If we build Mexico to be a super program then we might as well just give the three points,” Miller said. “Why can’t Canada win? Sure we can. Our players have to stay confident. Nothing is impossible.”

Panama could become group favorite

There has been a lot of talk about Panama’s win over Mexico at the Rose Bowl, even days after the game. Panama’s performance and the addition of veteran striker Blas Perez to the roster could make the team the favorite to win Group A.

“To have Blas available is important to us,” Panama coach Julio Dely Valdes said. “He is a staple of this national team, but so is each player on this team. As for our confidence, that win [against Mexico] has to give us the confidence that we can do some good things. We can’t think about being champions yet we have to take it step-by-step.”

The next step for Panama is taking on Martinique, which is coming off a 1-0 win against Canada with a late goal.

“Martinique has very good players,” Dely Valdes said. “We have been able to see that it’s an aggressive team that constantly fights for every ball. They have speed to counter attack. It’s a team that can score. They could have scored plenty of goals against Canada had they finished their chances.”

Les Matinino likes to be under the radar

Martinique entered the tournament as an underdog, but don’t tell that to head coach Patrick Cavelan. During a press conference at CenturyLink Field on Wednesday, he said that his team came to win games.

“We have to think big and use our imagination,” Cavelan said. “You have to think big. Yes, our win might have come as a surprise but our players know what they can do and know where they are from and where we are trying to go. It’s not a surprise. If we beat Canada, it won’t be luck. It will be our hard work.”

Goalkeeper Kevin Olimpa agreed.

He said that he sees a quality team within his national squad and a quality team for Panama.

“I don’t know much about Panama I know more about Mexico and the U.S. but I’ve begun to understand how Panama plays,” Olimpa said. “I think they have a real good level of play and they can become a dangerous team if they continue to win.”

Daniel Passarella regresó de Europa

BUENOS AIRES -- El presidente de River Plate, Daniel Passarella, arribó esta mañana al país sin hacer declaraciones luego de su estadía en Europa, donde estuvo negociando las posibles ventas de Rogelio Funes Mori, Ezequiel Cirigliano y Eder Alvarez Balanta.

El "Kaiser" arribó al aeropuerto de Ezeiza cerca de las 7 de la mañana desde Roma, se limitó a avisar que no iba a hablar ya que estaba "muy cansado", y se retiró hacia su casa con un colaborador del club que lo fue a buscar.

Passarella se reunirá en las próximas horas con el vicepresidente, Diego Turnes, y con parte del Consejo de Fútbol para analizar las propuestas que recibió por los jugadores mencionados, que en principio están lejos de las expectativas previas.

El entrenador de River, Ramón Díaz, también lo espera para una charla en referencia a las tratativas de los refuerzos que aún no se cerraron y que solicitó en la charla previa al viaje del directivo a Italia y Francia.

Juninho Pernambucano set for Vasco return

Juninho Pernambucano has agreed to re-join Vasco in a contract until December, when the former Lyon player will retire from football.

The midfielder was recently playing for the New York Red Bulls in the United States but left the club due to personal issues.

The announcement is expected to be made by Friday, but the signing has already been confirmed by president Roberto Dinamite.

Roberto Dinamite told a press conference: "We can announce this tomorrow, but I can say that it will be a great contract for Juninho and for Vasco. You´ll have a pleasant surprise tomorrow."

The club´s director Cristiano Koehler has not confirmed the deal, he told Globo Esporte: "It´s everything well underway, but a few details are left, some small things. I believe everything will be done by tomorrow."

Violence masks the true story of Brazilian football

RIO DE JANEIRO -- There´s a video doing the rounds, a catchy little ditty called, "Dumb ways to die in Rio." It is an eclectic collection of contemporary big-city Brazilian perils, ranging from the amusing (dropping dead in shock at the price of real estate) to the annoying (being squashed on a subway train), to the downright terrifying.

Football, of course, gets a look in. A cited danger is that of cheering a goal for your team while surrounded by opposing supporters. This, undoubtedly, can be a real danger. Brazil currently leads the rankings for football-related deaths.

Another couple were registered recently at the other end of the country, in the remote northern town of Pio XII. In a local amateur game, a referee apparently got into a fight with a player and stabbed him to death, at which point members of the crowd took justice into their own hands and ended up decapitating the referee.

It is a story that has made headlines all around the world, with the global media playing up the scare angle with less than a year to go to the 2014 World Cup and hundreds of thousands of tourists expected to visit.

This, of course, is something of a stretch. This incident is so extraordinarily barbaric, so off the scale of normality that it would clearly be unfair to extract too many conclusions from it. In 19 years in Brazil, I don´t think I have even once been decapitated. I´m almost sure I would remember such a thing.

But I do recall twice being mugged at gunpoint. It is an experience common to most big-city dwellers in Brazil, and it is something that can change you forever.

The first time happened was in late 2000, about 1 a.m., at a bus stop close to Vasco da Gama´s stadium. It is a notoriously dangerous part of town. No local journalist I know would even dream of taking the bus back home after a big game there. But I had an unblemished record, and, anyway, I´m a huge believer in the importance of public transport. Two muggers, one with a neat right hook, the other with a huge pistol, went about their business.

From the moment I was jumped I can still recall what was happening, and what I was feeling about it, in every fraction of every second. The most durable thought stays with me still: Looking into the eyes of the guy with the pistol, it was clear that he could pull the trigger and get a good night´s sleep. It would have all the moral consequences of ripping the ring off a beer can. It is one thing to know this on a theoretical basis; quite another to have this demonstrated in front of you in such visceral circumstances.

Nevertheless, it was a good lesson to learn, and it held me in good stead the second time I was in such a situation.

This one came straight out of the blue, a couple of weeks ago in Salvador. It was the Sunday after Brazil had beaten Italy in the final group game of the Confederations Cup, and I took advantage of a rare morning off to wander up and down the coastline. It was a beautiful day, and I was thinking to myself that it might be a good idea to return for a holiday sometime soon. I went back to the hotel and changed clothes for a wander some 15 minutes down the road to the local supermarket. It was 1 in the afternoon on a glorious day. What could possibly go wrong?

Had I stuck to the street side, probably nothing. Instead, though, I wandered down the pavement alongside the beach – which made me visible. I didn´t really know the location -- this was my first time in Salvador -- and was unaware of the dangers. My assailant, a charmless young man with a bicycle and a pistol, was clearly scouting for opportunities. He must have watched me making my happy way along, because he jumped me at exactly the right place from his point of view -- the point along the path that was most deserted.

He pulled up his bike and rolled up his shirt to reveal the pistol. Again, I felt that almost celestial calm descending, the seconds multiplying into fractions in which I calculated my response. I thought I might have a chance of brazening it out, so I walked on, waving him away. "Do you want to get shot in the back?" he cried. I weighed up the pros and cons and saw that the game was up. It was not a chance worth taking. There was one more line I tried. "There´s nothing on me," I said. "It´s all back at the hotel."

This had only the tiniest chance of success. My wallet was bulging in my pocket -- as he was well aware. He had been sizing me up before acting. So I handed over the money -- with a couple of attempts to keep something for myself -- and chalked it down to experience.

My response was almost certainly not ideal. I probably made too many attempts to negotiate. It would have been safer to have handed it over right from the start. But I can congratulate myself on keeping control -- panic and sudden movements can get you killed in these situations. And I can also congratulate myself for not trying to play the hero -- there were a couple of moments, just fractions of time, when the thought occurred to me that I could push him off his bike and make a break for it -- another silly action that could have got me killed. At the end of the day, I had lost about $50. My way of dealing with it: straight back to the hotel to write an article. And so in my own mind, I had come out on top, earning more than I had been forced to hand over.

Boca, lejos de Gago y Cata Díaz

BUENOS AIRES -- El presidente del Valencia, Amadeo Salvo, le dijo a "La Oral Deportiva" que "el pase de Gago a Boca esta caído" .

Mientras que el titular del Atlético Madrid, Enrique Cerezo, le dijo al programa de ESPN Radio en Rivadavia que no podrán trabas por Daniel Díaz, pero no tienen ofertas de Boca.

"(Fernando) Gago tendrá que volver a Valencia el 22 de julio. No hay una propuesta acorde a la realidad de la valía de un jugador como Gago", afirmó Amadeo Salvo, quien pretende unos 3.5 millones de euro por el volante.

Y agregó: "Vélez no nos llamó. Nosotros escuchamos a todo el mundo".

"A esta hora el pase de Gago a Boca esta caído" , sentenció el dirigente del Valencia.

Por su parte, Enrique Cerezo, mandamás del Atlético Madrid que dirige Diego Simeone, contó de la situación de Daniel Díaz.

"Estamos igual que siempre con Cata Díaz. Tiene varias ofertas y no sabe por cuál decidirá".

Cata Díaz primero había dado el OK para volver a Boca, luego dijo que no, y después volvió a su idea de regresar al equipo de Bianchi, pero Cerezo aclaró: "De Boca no tenemos ninguna oferta".

Pero dejó la puerta abierta: "Si él quiere ir a Boca no tendrá ninguna traba. Sólo nos tiene que decir dónde quiere jugar y hablaremos".

All Boys va por Farías-Battión-Colazo

BUENOS AIRES -- All Boys, cerca de incorporar al "Tecla" Farías, Battión y Colazo.

El delantero está próximo a incorporarse a All Boys, club que mantiene "encaminadas" las negociaciones para conseguir las llegadas de los mediocampistas, con miras al comienzo del Torneo Inicial.

El propio presidente de la entidad, Roberto Bugallo, confirmó que "está prácticamente todo listo" para que el `Tecla` Farías sea uno de los refuerzos del conjunto de Julio César Falcioni.

El ex Independiente, cuyo pase pertenece al Cruzeiro de Belo Horizonte, arribaría a préstamo por una temporada.

El jugador pareció ser una `debilidad` del titular "albo", quien había mencionado, más de un mes atrás, cuando inclusive se estaba jugando el Torneo Final pasado, que el goleador oriundo de Trenque Lauquen consistía en la "apuesta principal" para sumar al plantel.

"Se están abriendo puertas en lo económico", comentó Bugallo al programa partidario `Mundo All Boys`, para justificar, en cierta medida, la profusión de incorporaciones para el equipo de Floresta.

En principio, el jugador, de 33 años, se integraría sábado o lunes a las prácticas del elenco de Falcioni al predio de Ciudad Evita.

Bugallo también reveló que las gestiones por Colazo, mediocampista zurdo de Boca, y por Battión, "están encaminadas".

"Por Colazo ya arreglamos con el jugador y falta que Boca dé el okey", aseveró el dirigente, mientras que por Battión, que ayer se desvinculó de Independiente, se aguarda llegar a un "acuerdo inmediato" en lo económico.

Hasta el momento, All Boys suma seis incorporaciones que ya se entrenan con el plantel: Alejandro Gagliardi (Rosario Central), Exequiel Benavídez (Boca), Carlos Casteglione (Rosario Central), Nicolás Cabrera (Gimnasia La Plata), Marcelo Bustamante (Banfield) y Cristian Alvarez (Boca).

Villar: "Zubeldía trabaja las 24 horas"

BUENOS AIRES -- El volante de Racing Diego Villar destacó que el técnico Luis Zubeldía "trabaja las 24 horas del día, porque cuando no entrena vive pensando en el fútbol, pero a pesar de eso, en un club grande debe dar exámenes permanentemente".

"Zubeldía trabaja las 24 horas del día y no solamente las cinco que dura el entrenamiento. A lo mejor se reserva cuatro para dormir, pero vive pensando en el fútbol. Sin embargo, a pesar de eso, en un grande como Racing debe rendir exámenes permanentemente", advirtió Villar en diálogo con Deportivo Télam.

"Luis es muy joven y cuenta en el plantel con varios jugadores más grandes que él, pero supo integrarlos con varios chicos muy buenos que subió de las inferiores y así armó un gran plantel, que ahora se va a mejorar aún más con los refuerzos", dijo.

A las muy próximas llegadas del lateral ex Banfield Nicolás Tagliafico y dos volantes de experiencia como el uruguayo Mario Regueiro (Lanús) y el colombiano Fabián Vargas (Independiente), el propio Villar reveló que puede agregarse en las próximas horas su antiguo compañero en Godoy Cruz, el arquero Nelson Ibáñez.

"Con Ibáñez podemos volver a jugar juntos. Me quedaron grandes recuerdos de Godoy Cruz y mi aspiración pasa por alcanzar en Racing el mismo rendimiento que tuve en Mendoza", reconoció.

"Sé que no tuve un buen semestre y que las expulsiones me sacaron del equipo porque perdí ritmo, pero también soy consciente que estoy en condiciones de dar mucho más. De hecho cuando llegué rendí en un nivel bastante bueno", alegó.

A tal punto fue así que cuando jugaba en Godoy Cruz hasta tuvo la oportunidad de vestir la camiseta del seleccionado argentino junto al propio Ibáñez y Ariel Rojas (hoy en River Plate). "Eso fue muy lindo, pero quedó en el pasado. A los 32 años lo tomo como un buen recuerdo".

"Pero no es cierto que me pesó ponerme la camiseta de un grande. Ese fue mi sueño después de arrancar en Newell`s y pasar además por Gimnasia La Plata y Arsenal (también tuvo una breve estadía en Santiago Wanderers, de Chile). Tengo claro que eso que decía de dar examen es cotidiano y aprendí a convivir con la situación", admitió.

"Uno trata de esforzarse a cada paso para ocupar un lugar, pero he luchado sanamente por un puesto. Por ejemplo si ahora viene Vargas, está bien. Lo que está mal es que haya amenazas por Twitter hacia él de parte de barras de Independiente. El fútbol cambió y esto es profesionalismo", argumentó.

El marplatense que a los 14 años abandonó su ciudad natal para jugar en las inferiores de Newell`s y fue padre a los 20 años, ahora vive en el barrio porteño de Caballito y dice que "no" le gusta la Ciudad de Buenos Aires, "sobre todo" porque no puede "soportar el tránsito y los piquetes".

"En este tiempo tuve ofertas para irme a jugar a México y Arabia Saudita, pero no me convencieron. Es que soy muy familiero y no me gusta alejarme del país. También es cierto que los destinos influyeron. Quizás si los ofrecimientos hubiesen llegado de Europa, habría sido diferente", contempló.

"De cualquier manera nunca privilegié la plata por encima del bienestar familiar. Siempre supe que el dinero en el fútbol ya me iba a llegar algún día", apuntó.

Villar precisó que otros entrenadores que lo marcaron en su carrera fueron "Juan Manuel Llop, Leonardo Madelón, Omar Asad y Héctor Veira".

"Y mis ex compañeros de Godoy Cruz me contaron que Martín Palermo y Roberto Abbondanzieri son muy buenos. Yo no los tuve, pero conozco a Pablo Lenci, que forma parte del cuerpo técnico de ellos y es una gran persona", indicó.

"Mis dos amores en el fútbol son Newell`s y Gimnasia. Cuando mencionaba lo de Vargas a Racing, no me puse a pensar que me pasaría a mí si me buscaran de Rosario Central o Estudiantes, pero en principio creo que sería algo complicado", concluyó.

Buffarini y los rumores sobre Man.City

BUENOS AIRES -- El mediocampista de San Lorenzo Julio Buffarini se ilusionó el jueves con "jugar en la liga inglesa", conocido el interés del Manchester City a pedido de su nuevo entrenador, el chileno Manuel Pellegrini.
Pese a los rumores de su partida, el cordobés aclaró que permanece "tranquilo" y concentrado "sólo en San Lorenzo", que la próxima temporada repartirá su atención en tres competencias: el torneo Inicial, la Copa Sudamericana y la Copa Argentina.

"Escuché los rumores, mis amigos que me han comentado que leyeron páginas de Inglaterra sobre el interés pero quiero estar con los pies sobre la tierra", le dijo Buffarini a Télam.

El mediocampista, de 24 años, surgido de Talleres de Córdoba, llegó a San Lorenzo en abril de 2012 procedente de Ferro Carril Oeste y se convirtió en un referente del equipo en base a la entrega que caracteriza su estilo de juego.

"Pasó todo muy rápido. En poco más de un año tuve hasta la oportunidad de entrenarme con la selección, que no es algo menor. San Lorenzo es un club de mucha exigencia, en el que tenés que rendir todos los partidos", asumió.

Al margen de su posible partida, Buffarini se entusiasmó con la "muy buena pretemporada" que realiza el plantel en Los Cardales de cara a un semestre que imaginó "duro" por la abundancia de competiciones.

"En el último año nos pudimos olvidar de la lucha por evitar el descenso, el club se organizó muy bien en poco tiempo y ahora el objetivo es llegar lo más lejos posible en cualquiera de los tres torneos", explicó.

El cordobés reconoció una armonía entre "los dirigentes, el cuerpo técnico y el plantel", por lo que alimentó el sueño de "ganar las tres cosas".

"Además, en cuanto a lo futbolístico, se mantuvo la misma base de jugadores y se sumaron grandes refuerzos", valoró.

El arquero Cristian Alvarez, los defensores Emmanuel Mas y Fabricio Fontanini, el mediocampista Fernando Elizari y el delantero Martín Cauteruccio son las caras nuevas del equipo para la temporada venidera.

Ellos serán presentados el viernes al cabo del entrenamiento matutino en Los Cardales, en la misma jornada que podría cerrarse la continuidad del mediocampista Ignacio Piatti.

River logró un 1º acuerdo por Fabbro

BUENOS AIRES -- River Plate llegó el jueves a un acuerdo con Cerro Porteño de Paraguay por el mediocampista Jonathan Fabbro y así el club de Núñez tendrá al refuerzo que tanto pidió el entrenador Ramón Díaz.

"Dimos el paso con el presidente de acá (Juan José Zapag) y River nos apoyó, nos confirmó ciertas cosas. Lo hicimos, lo logramos. Sólo quedan detalles personales, no menores, pero vamos a poder estar ahí (en River). Se hizo para cumplir el deseo de cambiar de aire, de aprovechar esta gran oportunidad", comentó el representante y hermano del jugador, Darío Fabbro.

Y agregó: "Cada parte pretende lo mejor, en un momento se complicó. Nosotros habíamos tenido conversación con Jony (Fabbro) y nos pusimos plazo".

De esta manera, el representante del estratega recordó el receso de verano, en el que Fabbro estuvo cerca de llegar a River, pero por no poder desvincularse de Cerro Porteño su arribo a Núñez quedó truncado.

Al abrirse otra vez el mercado de pases, Fabbro fue nuevamente el nombre apuntado por Ramón Díaz y esta vez el jugador le metió presión a los dirigentes guaraníes para lograr su salida del club.

Así, River tiene su segundo refuerzo en esta pretemporada y el que más quería su técnico. Fabbro se suma a la incorporación del mediocampista Osmar Ferreyra, quien ya entrena con el plantel millonario.

A Fabbro se lo esperará en los próximos días en Salta, donde River intensificará sus trabajos de pretemporada.

El vínculo entre Fabbro y River será a préstamo por un año y además habrá un intercambio de jugadores de parte del club argentino hacia Cerro Porteño.

Trinidad to tackle areas of improvement, Haiti

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. -- Trinidad & Tobago head coach Stephen Hart said on Thursday that he fully recognizes the areas that the Soca Warriors need to address, as they prepare to face Caribbean rival Haiti in a CONCACAF Gold Cup, Group A encounter at Sun Life Stadium on Friday.

The Soca Warriors are coming off an exciting 2-2 draw with El Salvador in Harrison, New Jersey, on Monday. Haiti dropped a 2-0 decision to Honduras the same evening,

“I cannot stress the importance of the game,” Hart said. “It’s game two and we all know what is at stake.

“I think at times we possessed the ball well in some spurts, but we were not as consistent as I know we can be. We got ourselves into some good attacking positions as the game went on, so that for me was very positive.

Leo Beenhakker, Trinidad’s director of football, also remained cautiously optimistic about the group and Trinidad’s chances of advancement.

“I still don’t have an overview of the tournament so far, but as for the teams in my group, El Salvador is a good team,” he said. “The bad luck for us was that we played a very average first half and the second was much better. In the end we could be satisfied with the draw because we didn’t play that well in the first half.

“Haiti is a very difficult team to beat because they are very athletic very quick and very strong, so it will not be easy tomorrow night and we will give our best effort against Honduras.”

The Trinidadians are looking to snap a 10-game Gold Cup winless streak. Their last victory in the competition came against Costa Rica, 2-1, in the 2000 quarterfinals.
