Atletico: Tales of the eternal ´almost´ champions

Inevitably, the saying that surviving certain football matches is better evidence of a healthy heart than any ECG exams comes to mind when one thinks of what Atletico Mineiro fans have been going through this season.

After two excruciating ties in the 2013 Copa Libertadores, they have never been closer to the most prestigious title in South American club football. But there is much more at stake over the two games against Olimpia (starting Wednesday with what promises to be a tense 90 minutes at Paraguay´s legendary Defensores del Chaco stadium): Atletico are actually aiming to lose the title of "almost champions."

One has to go back to 1971 to find the last time Atletico fans had proper reasons to cheer. That was the year they won their only Campeonato Brasileiro title. Since then -- apart from state championships in Minas Gerais, where local hegemony has always been a two-horse race with rivals Cruzeiro -- there have been only two Copa Conmebol (now Sudamericana) trophies, hardly the stuff of legend. At first glance, the data put a strong claim against club folklore -- this, after all, is the team nicknamed the "Avenging Rooster" after a famous cockfighting champion who used to terrorise opponents in state capital Belo Horizonte rinks in the ´30s.

In fact, Atletico became famous in Brazil for stumbling at the final hurdles in their quests for glory. They have fallen short of that elusive second national title no less than 14 times since 1971, finishing as runners-up in four campaigns. Meanwhile, rivals Cruzeiro have won four Brazilian cups, a Brazilian League and two Libertadores.

That jinxed reputation is not lost easily. Being in Brazil, a country where superstition is the unofficial religion, it is impossible not to talk about curses. Especially when one looks at what has happened at the Libertadores so far this year. After breezing to the quarterfinal stages with the best campaign and a 4-1 thumping of three-time champions Sao Paulo, Atletico survived challenges from unfancied sides Tijuana and Newell´s Old Boys.

Make no mistake here: The Mexican club was only beaten by a 92nd-minute penalty save from keeper Victor last May, while the Argentine side could feel a bit aggrieved by a power failure that stretched enough of the returning semifinal leg for Atletico to cancel out in the dying minutes a 2-0 defeat in the previous game and take matters to penalties, where Victor again saved the day. Many in Brazil started to think Atletico´s luck could be changing.

It shouldn´t be down to luck, though. Boasting a squad where a resurgent Ronaldinho ruled the roost (pun intended) alongside mercurial winger Bernard, defender Rever and striker Jo (all of the latter members of Luiz Felipe Scolari´s Brazil squad), Atletico looked the strongest they had since the early ´80s -- the wondrous Brazil 1982 World Cup squad, for instance, had defender Luizinho, midfielder Cerezo and winger Eder in its starting lineup.

Just like their predecessors, however, Ronaldinho & Co. still haven´t delivered. Although they seemed destined to win the Brazilian title last year, their challenge fizzled out, and Atletico finished second behind Fluminense after leading the league for 15 consecutive rounds. More salt was rubbed in the wound by Cruzeiro fans who remind them that Fluminense´s top scorer, Fred, hails from the blue side of Belo Horizonte.

What is undeniable is that the Rooster have showed amazing resilience just to have reached this point. If Corinthians´ rise from the Second Division to a triple crown made of the Brazilian, South American and world titles between 2011 and 2012 was the stuff of fairy tales, spare a thought for Atletico´s tale. Far from having the Sao Paulo giants´ immense popularity and earning potential, they lie 10th in the Brazilian clubs´ rich list, having turned over £36.2 million last year -- three times less than the Sao Paulo giants, for example.

Unlike teams like Flamengo, Atletico´s appeal is regionalised, mostly confined to the Minas Gerais state, where the fierce rivalry with Cruzeiro is not enough to win the attentions of the wider public. That means Atletico took a much bigger hit when they were relegated in 2005. In fact, for a number of years they were close to bankruptcy and even had the 1971 trophy used as collateral for debts.

Since 2009, however, the club have managed to triple their income, even before they staged the massive coup of luring Ronaldinho, who in 2011 left Flamengo after a row over unpaid wages. A tough austerity package imposed by president Alexandre Kalil tidied up the house enough for the club to renegotiate debts and start competing again. It almost paid off last season.

Their brand of gung-ho football, where long balls combine with Ronaldinho´s ingenious through balls, suits the intimidating noise of the fans. They will be needed more than ever for the return match next week even before we know the score in Assuncion: CONMEBOL have refused to allow Atletico to play their home leg at the Independencia stadium -- those who know their football trivia will remember it was there the U.S. staged their massive upset of England in the 1950 World Cup. At the 23,000-seater, they have been unbeaten for 38 games. The South American ruling body is adamant the game must be played at the Mineirao Stadium, one of the World Cup arenas.

That will mean the Paraguayans will probably play with 63,000 people screaming in their ears. But tell that that to that superstitious lot of Atletico, most of all manager Cuca, whose respected CV is peppered with near-misses. Since the second leg against Tijuana, he has been keeping the match ball as a good-luck charm, for example. It actually takes part in team talks and so forth.

All that will lose the smell of desperation if Atletico climbs in the pecking order (sorry, I couldn´t resist) come two weeks´ time. Although it would be the end of a source of brilliant jokes involving empty trophy rooms -- the one about the skeleton of a former club official who passed away there in 1971 is a favourite.

Boca presentó a tres refuerzos

BUENOS AIRES -- Emmanuel Gigliotti, Daniel Díaz y Franco Cangele fueron presentados el viernes en forma oficial como nuevos jugadores de Boca Juniors, en una reunión que encabezó el presidente del club, Daniel Angelici.

"Se trata de dos jugadores (por Díaz y Cangele) que ya habían jugado con nuestra camiseta y de uno (por Gigliotti) que nos ha pedido el cuerpo técnico por sus goles", recordó Angelici. El titular de Boca agregó que "toda la dirigencia, el cuerpo técnico y el plantel vamos a hacer un esfuerzo porque todos sabemos que quedamos en deuda en el primer semestre", en el que Boca finalizó penúltimo en el torneo Final y quedó eliminado en cuartos de final de la Copa Libertadores ante Newell´s.

En la presentación llevada a cabo en el mediodía del viernes en el Hotel Boca, Díaz se declaró "muy contento de volver al club. El presidente ya hace bastante quería que yo volviese a vestir la camiseta de Boca. Tuvo mucho que ver el esfuerzo de él".

"No había tenido la posibilidad de ser dirigido por (el entrenador Carlos) Bianchi, es una oportunidad muy buena. Que te pida un técnico tan ganador genera algo muy bueno. Uno en la cancha tiene que devolver eso", resumió el apodado Cata.

Por su parte, Gigliotti se confesó "muy aliviado" porque "se demoró muchísimo la firma" de su contrato y "solo no podía entrenar de la misma manera" que ahora que lo hace con el resto del plantel.

"Es el paso más importante de mi carrera. Antes de que apareciese la posibilidad me podía interesar ir a México pero no prioricé en ningún momento la parte económica, sólo lo futbolístico, lo que es Boca", afirmó Gigliotti, quien con once tantos viene de ser el goleador del torneo Final junto a Ignacio Scocco.

Finalmente, Cangele, que se entrena con Boca desde principios de año y ya jugó en el partido amistoso ante Estudiantes de La Plata, comentó que "las sensaciones son todas positivas" y resaltó: "Lo único que espero es que tengamos un buen año todos".

El delantero, el único de los tres que ya fue dirigido por Bianchi, comentó que al técnico lo ve "igual, deja trabajar tranquilo, no te pide nada que no puedas hacer. Creo que no cambió nada".

El delantero Walter Riaño, otra de las caras nuevas, se entrena con Boca desde hace varios días y firmó su contrato, pero no está habilitado para jugar por un reclamo de Talleres de Córdoba y busca conseguir una autorización por parte del Ministerio de Trabajo.

Niell pasa de Gimnasia a Central

ROSARIO -- El delantero Franco Niell se convirtió el viernes en el segundo refuerzo de Rosario Central, luego de coquetear con Independiente y con Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata, club en el que se desempeñó a préstamo la pasada temporada.
El atacante acordó un vínculo por tres años con la entidad rosarina que hará su retorno en la próxima temporada a la Primera División y que hasta aquí sólo cerró la contratación del defensor Alejandro Donatti.

Después de realizarse la revisión médica, Niell, de 30 años, se entrenó con sus nuevos compañeros el viernes en Arroyo Seco.

Luego de resolver su desvinculación de Querétaro de México, el futbolista chubutense quedó con el pase en su poder y ante la posibilidad de arreglar un contrato con Independiente, con la venia del entrenador Miguel Brindisi, o con Gimnasia, donde Pedro Troglio había declarado que sólo pretendía reforzarse con él, pero finalmente se inclinó por Central.

El técnico del equipo rosarino, Miguel Angel Russo, espera la llegada de más refuerzos para completar el plantel.

River presiona a Lanzini por oferta

BUENOS AIRES -- River Plate, necesitado de una venta para financiar el plantel durante la próxima temporada, presiona al mediocampista Manuel Lanzini para que acepte la millonaria oferta del Baniyas de Emiratos Arabes, dispuesto a desembolsar unos 6,5 millones de dólares por su ficha.
El padre del jugador, de 20 años, llegó en las últimas horas a Salta, donde el equipo realiza la pretemporada, para tomar una postura definitiva en referencia a la proposición.

En términos económicos, la oferta desde Dubai se trata de un excelente negocio para ambas partes, aunque la única traba reside en que al futbolista no lo seduce desde el punto de vista deportivo.

Lanzini, que durante la temporada 2011-2012 fue prestado al Fluminense de Brasil, firmaría un contrato de 1,2 millones de dólares anuales pero lo retiene la idea de explotar definitivamente en River, donde goza la buena consideración del DT Ramón Díaz.

En el pasado torneo Final, el mediocampista jugó 15 partidos y fue, junto al delantero Carlos Luna, uno de los máximos goleadores del equipo con cinco tantos.

La dirigencia de River le insiste al jugador para que apruebe la operación porque su utilidad servirá para costear los refuerzos cercanos a concretarse: Jonathan Fabbro, Carlos Carbonero y Teófilo Gutiérrez.

El ex mediocampista de Cerro Porteño todavía no salió de Paraguay debido a trabas administrativas en torno a su pase, por lo que en River esperan tenerlo recién el lunes próximo a disposición del entrenador.

Carbonero, en cambio, llegará al país en las próximas horas y el sábado mismo podría sumarse a la pretemporada.

La negociación por Gutiérrez perfila más compleja, después de que Cruz Azul de México decidiera apartarlo del plantel por la manifiesta intención del colombiano a partir con contrato todavía vigente en la entidad azteca.

Por el momento, Díaz cuenta sólo con el mediocampista izquierdo Osmar El Malevo Ferreyra como única incorporación de un plantel, que esta mañana volvió a trabajar luego del primer amistoso de pretemporada, jugado anoche con Juventud Antoniana (0-0) en el estadio Padre Martearena.

En la jornada del viernes, se confirmó que el capitán, Leonardo Ponzio, sufrió un esguince en el tobillo izquierdo que lo mantendrá inactivo durante dos semanas.

River jugará el sábado desde las 16.30 frente a Central Norte su segundo partido de preparación.

Una probable formación para ese juego es la siguiente: Marcelo Barovero; Gabriel Mercado, Adalberto Román y Federico Vega; Carlos Sánchez, Cristian Ledesma, Iván Díaz, y Leonel Vangioni; Lanzini; Luna y Giovanni Simeone.

Angelici confirmó oferta por Gago

BUENOS AIRES -- El presidente de Boca Juniors, Daniel Angelici, comentó el viernes que espera que "dentro de pocos días también Fernando Gago" se sume como otro de los refuerzos del equipo.

En la presentación oficial de Emmanuel Gigliotti, Daniel Díaz y Franco Cangele como incorporaciones del club, el dirigente reveló que "Gago está viajando a Españá con su representante y lleva una nueva propuesta que hicimos por escrito al Valencia".

"Cada vez que alguien quiere repatriar algún jugador que está en Europa, es muy difícil -admitió-. Las negociaciones llevan su tiempo, la diferencia de la moneda es muy importante".

Respecto de Claudio Riaño, precisó Angelici que "ha firmado su contrato hace unos días y está entrenando en el club. Queremos ser respetuosos del juzgado que en Córdoba presentó una inhibición (por un pedido de Talleres, ex club del delantero)".

"No lo hemos podido todavía inscribir en AFA -añadió-. Seguramente el día martes, que hay una reunión, se destrabará esa medida".

Por último, acerca del arquero Emanuel Trípodi comentó el presidente que "como en todos los contratos, cada uno defiende sus intereses. Es diálogo e ir acercando posiciones. Se puede destrabar y, si se destraba, se firma".

Sobre lo que pasó y lo que vendrá con el equipo, expresó: "Hicimos un campeonato que no fue bueno, a ningún hincha de Boca le gusta vernos en esa posición. Somos muy optimistas en cuanto a que con este grupo vamos a pelear este campeonato".

Según Angelici, "Los planteles de Boca siempre fueron buenos, siempre tuvimos muy buenos profesionales. Lo que esperamos en este semestre es que nos vaya mejor en el campeonato".

Boca finalizó en la penúltima posición en el torneo Final ganado por Newell´s, su verdugo en los cuartos de final de la Copa Libertadores.

Why Varela’s move from Manchester to Boca could be good for everyone

Boca Juniors have announced that a loan deal for Manchester United’s recently acquired, Uruguayan youngster, Guillermo Varela could be in the pipeline. Having just signed the 20-year-old, it would be a quick turnaround to see him back in South America, but this could be advantageous for everyone involved….

Having virtually no first team experience in his native Uruguay, Guillermo Varela was plucked from Uruguay’s youth ranks following his impressive performances in the 2013 South American Youth Championship. Manchester United saw his potential as Uruguay finished third and reportedly paid Peñarol €2.8 million, despite the youngster having played only 23 minutes of top flight football in his home country.

Ordinarily, Verela would have been expected to join up with United’s Development Squad but Jose Requejo, Boca Juniors Club Secretary last announced on the radio that a one-year “loan has been 80% arranged.” The potentially difficult integration into life in Manchester avoided for now and the greater chance of competitive playing time could be an astute play by the Premier League champions.

What Verela may have in technique and potential, he certainly lacks in experience and playing time, something which he will not find at Old Trafford any time soon. At Boca Juniors, even at his tender age, Varela could find himself playing regularly alongside several other more experienced players. Importantly, in addition to simply getting some time on the pitch Varela will become accustomed to playing regularly in front of a large and expectant crowd. While La Bombonera may be one of the most recognisable stadiums in world football it is also one of the most intense and the Boca fans will be quick to let one of their own know if he is not up to speed. For an eventual transition to playing in Manchester and the pressure of always competing at the the very highest level this could prove an invaluable experience.

For Boca Juniors it could also be beneficial as Carlos Bianchi has attempted to overhaul his aging squad after the bitter disappointment of the Torneo Final and their Copa Libertadores exit. The right side of Boca’s side has been in need of reinforcement and Verela would offer a more natural option on this flank than those currently in the squad. The prospect of perhaps Varela and Sanchez Miño covering both wings could provide Boca a great deal of width.

And for Manchester United? Varela has spent sometime at Carrington and has seen his new surroundings and can now go away to study his English and gain experience knowing that he will return much more prepared for the rigours of English football. With Rafael having grown into the right back spot and the able deputies of Chris Smalling or Phil Jones, the signing was always going to be one for the future so there is no rush to thrust Varela into the limelight.

We will wait to see if the deal goes through as there has been no news from Manchester as of yet but in a young man’s footballing education a spell in La Bombonera could do no harm.

Vasco sign Wolfsburg´s Fágner on loan deal

Vasco have officially announced the signing of Wolfsburg´s right-back Fágner on a loan deal.

Fágner had previously played for Vasco from 2009 to 2011 and is highly regarded at the club. The new signing will be officially presented on Monday.

Vasco have not dislosed the duration of the loan deal, but it has been reported that he will stay at the club until December.

They plan to extend the loan deal beyond December though, or if possible, sign the right-back permanently.

The club are also signing former Internacional defensive midfielder Pablo Guiñazu and they are interested in Udinese´s centreback Danilo.

The Brazilian international transfer window closes on Saturday, so the clubs are racing against time to register their new signings as soon as possible.

Unión (SF): se sumó Danilo Gerlo

SANTA FE -- El defensor Danilo Gerlo se incorporó al plantel con el que Unión de Santa Fe afrontará el campeonato de la Primera B Nacional 2013/14.

Gerlo, de 34 años, llegó a préstamo por un año, procedente de Arsenal de Sarandí.

Ahora la intención de los dirigentes de Unión es acordar la llegada del volante Víctor Zapata (de último paso por Independiente de Avellaneda), y del delantero Sebastián Palacios (de Boca Juniors).

Hasta el momento, el equipo santafesino incorporó a Daniel Islas, Maximiliano Laso, Pablo Mattos, Luciano Vella, Rodrigo Salinas y Danilo Gerlo.

Por otro lado, Unión informó hoy que se suspendió el amistoso que iba a jugar mañana, a las 10, en su estadio, contra Sanjustino de San Justo.

Juventus retira del mercado a Isla

ROMA --Aunque parecía inminente su traspaso al Inter, Juventus anunció el viernes que retira del mercado al volante chileno Mauricio Isla.
"Isla ha sido objeto de interés del Inter, nos sentamos para evaluar la propuesta desde el punto de vista económico y técnico, pero de acuerdo con el entrenador, no consideramos que el jugador pueda estar en el mercado", dijo el director general de la Juve, Beppe Marotta.

Isla participó el jueves en un partido amistoso de preparación de cara al nuevo campeonato y fue pifiado por sus tifosi porque se barajaba su traspaso al Inter.

Tras el encuentro, el técnico, Antonio Conte aseguró también que el volante chileno está en los planes para la próxima temporada.

"Es un jugador de Juventus y estamos felices de tenerlo disponible. En la campaña pasada tuvo problemas físicos, pero este año va a jugar una gran temporada", indicó.

Conte señaló que Isla está en condiciones de pelear por un puesto en el once ideal del cuadro bicampeón: "No veo ningún problema para que sea titular en este momento"

Ponzio estára afuera por diez días

BUENOS AIRES -- El capitán de River Plate, Leonardo Ponzio, estará diez días inactivo a raíz de un esguince en el tobillo izquierdo que sufrió anoche en el empate sin goles ante Juventud Antoniana, en el primer partido amistoso de la pretemporada en Salta.
Ponzio, de 31 años, se sometió a una resonancia magnética que determinó el grado de la lesión y el plazo de recuperación, luego de la infracción que le cometió el volante del equipo salteño Daniel Liva.

El ex mediocampista de Newell`s Old Boys y Zaragoza de España ingresó por orden del entrenador Ramón Díaz a los 17 minutos del segundo tiempo y debió retirarse con una bolsa de hielo en el tobillo a los 41.

De esta manera, Ponzio estará habilitado para jugar a seis días del debut de River Plate en el torneo Inicial, como visitante, ante Gimnasia La Plata.
