CONCACAF Gold Cup: USA 1 Panama 0

http://www.youtube.com/w…1dttg8oMB8w

Brek Shea´s second-half strike was enough for the USA to secure their fifth CONCACAF Gold Cup title with a 1-0 win against Panama on Sunday.

The hosts had not won the competition since 2007, while it was Panama´s first appearance in the final and Jurgen Klinsmann´s men had the cutting edge in the end.

Klinsmann was forced to watch the game from the stands after receiving a touchline ban following an incident in the semi-final, but he will have been pleased with the start his side made.

The US forced the first opening in Chicago after 20 minutes when Stuart Holden, who later went off injured, let fly with a long-range effort that narrowly cleared the bar.

Holden´s effort was the only real chance of the half as it turned out, with both sides struggling to create any opportunities of note, other than set-pieces and long-distance strikes.

The second half continued in the same vein until, after 68 minutes, Klinsmann´s side took the lead through substitute Shea as he tapped home from close distance.

An Alejandro Bedoya cross came in from the right and, while it looked as though Landon Donovan would apply the finish, he completely miscued his effort, allowing Shea to steal in and prod home.

Roberto Chen came close to equalising for Panama after 73 minutes, striking past the far post, while Eddie Johnson missed a golden opportunity to close the game out.

He skied the ball over the bar from close range after 85 minutes but, in the end, it did not matter.

The US saw out the four minutes of added time and withstood heavy pressure from Julio Dely Valdes´ side to secure the title, sparking jubilant scenes at Soldier Field.

Arsenal yet to bid for Bernard

Arsenal are yet to make an offer for Atletico Mineiro midfielder Bernard, according to the playmaker´s father.

The English Premier League side are interested in the 20-year-old star, and the Brazil Serie A outfit want £22million for the winger.

Bernard´s father Delio Duarte said there was interest in Bernard, while his countryman Hulk has told him to move to Porto.

"Nothing is decided yet but we know there is interest from Arsenal. However, there has been nothing official from them," Duarte told O Jogo.

"Hulk has convinced Bernard that Porto would be better for him at this stage of his career."

Bernard led Mineiro to Copa Libertadores glory on Wednesday but looks almost certain to leave the club.

Arsenal, who are also interested in signing Liverpool star Luis Suarez, may be waiting to offload attacker Gervinho to Roma before going after Bernard.

But the delay in that move has allowed Porto to move into pole position to sign Bernard, a move Duarte would be happy with.

Reports in Italy suggest Roma are close to finalising the £7million signing of Ivory Coast international Gervinho.

Rodgers planning for season with Suarez, eyes Melgarejo

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is planning for a season with Luis Suarez and looks set to sign a left-back.

Suarez desperately wants a move but Liverpool have already rejected two bids from Arsenal for the star Uruguayan striker.

The 26-year-old is valued at £55million by the Anfield club, a figure yet to be met by Arsenal or Real Madrid, who are also believed to be interested.

Rodgers, whose side beat Thailand 3-0 in a friendly on Sunday, said Suarez was needed to help Liverpool push for a top-four finish.

"Luis is still very much a Liverpool player. There is nothing new to report on his situation," he said.

"He has three years left on his contract and we´re planning with him for the season ahead."

Suarez is still working his way up to full fitness after playing the final 30 minutes against Thailand in Bangkok.

The striker will miss Liverpool´s first six competitive fixtures of the upcoming season after being banned for biting, and Rodgers said Suarez would build his fitness ahead of his return.

"Luis still has some way to go as he´s a number of weeks behind the other players," Rodgers said.

"We also have to consider that our focus over the course of pre-season is for the first Premier League game against Stoke and Luis won´t be available for that.

"As he comes closer to finishing his ban we will build him up with more minutes on the field."

Rodgers has said he is looking for another quality attacker – whether Suarez leaves or not – and cover for Jose Enrique at left-back.

It appears he is close to signing a defender, with reports linking Liverpool with a move for Benfica full-back Lorenzo Melgarejo.

The 22-year-old Paraguayan can also play in a more attacking role and Rodgers hopes to sign him on a season-long loan with a view to a permanent move.
