FC Porto deny Bernard rumours

FC Porto have denied rumours that Atlético Mineiro star Bernard is set to join the Portuguese club in the coming days.

After rumours that Porto would announce a deal before their friendly against Celta on Sunday proved unfounded, coach Paulo Fonseca was keen not to give too much away.

"I don´t have any information about Bernard," he told reporters. "I only speak about the players who are here. I don´t know if he is coming and I will not speak about somebody not in the squad."

Bernard´s agent Adriano Spodato believes there is interest from some of Europe´s biggest clubs but says Bernard is likely to join FC Porto.

"I can confirm that the possibility is strong, but there is Shakhtar Donetsk, too," he told Mais Futebol.

"It should be between those [clubs]. On Monday or Tuesday there should be something more concrete. If it was up to me, Bernard would be a Porto player. I told him that this is the best way.

"It is preferable to enter a medium, but good, European club, rather than risk a top club and have no space to play. Indeed, Bernard is very interested in going to Porto."

Shakhtar offer €25m for Atlético Mineiro´s Bernard - report

Shakhtar Donetsk have offered €25 million for Atlético Mineiro´s attacker Bernard according to reports in Brazil.

ESPN Brasil claims that the only offer on the table is from the Ukrainian giants despite reported interest from FC Porto, Arsenal and Liverpool.

However, it is thought that Bernard is reluctant to play in Ukraine and according to his father, prefers Portugal as a destination.

This comes after news of a €16m bid from Arsenal was rejected last week as it was far below the club´s valuation of the player.

"We have not had a proposal for the player which meets the president´s value. But we have had proposals, Bernard is very popular, but this squad will continue for now," Atlético´s director of football Eduardo Maluf told reporters.

"Every day we have to disprove rumours. Here comes a newspaper from France, which gives all the details of the negotiation, but Bernard was present today, and Bernard is here training.

"The president has made it clear: if we have a great offer, he will be sold and you will know. But he plays for Atlético-MG and this speculation has been going for months."

LIGA POSTOBON CLAUSURA: SUNDAY 28TH JULY 2013

WEEK 1 – Sunday 28th July 2013

Deportivo Cali and Atletico Nacional lead the table with just one match remaining in the opening week of the Clausura season. Vladimir Marin was up to his old tricks, hitting in a forty-yard set piece home to clinch a big 3-0 win for Cali away to Once Caldas.

INDEPENDIENTE MEDELLÍN 1-1 DEPORTES TOLIMA

In a steamy hot Sunday afternoon in the Estadio Atanasio Girardot, it was an even game that finished in a deserved draw for both sides.

The away side took the lead after a long-range effort from debutant Hugo Lusardi deflected past Leandro Castellanos on 41 minutes. It was a hopeful low driving effort from around 35 yards out, that clipped the foot of Davidson Monsalve before nestling in the right-hand corner of Castellanos’ goal.

The equaliser came just three minutes later, on the stroke of half-time and it was hit from around the same distance. Marco Perez Murillo hit an excellent power free-kick home, giving goalkeeper Anthony Silva no chance of stopping.

The game continued, but in the stifling heat either side failed to produce the goods and find a winning goal.

ONCE CALDAS 0-3 DEPORTIVO CALI

Leonel Alvarez’s Deportivo Cali romped to a 3-0 win although Once Caldas dominated the majority of the play. The home sides’ defensive frailties gifted Cali the match with the opening goal especially emphasising this matter.

The hosts failed to clear their lines on 34 minutes and Miguel Murillo took full advantage of this. Working hard on the edge of the box, Nery Bareiro won the ball and passed it through the defence to Murillo in the area, the striker smashed his right foot through it and past 41-year-old goalkeeper Juan Carlos Henao.

Caldas grafted and missed glorious chances to get back into the game. Young strikers Clemente Palacios or Jose Izquierdo failed to have an impact in front of goal and the game was all over on 77 minutes.

Sergio Romero doubled the lead on the counter attack after a great surging run by substitute Stiven Mendoza. Picking the ball in his own half, Mendoza sped past the back trailing Caldas defenders and played the ball to Romero just inside the box, who controlled with his left and hit with his right into the top corner.

It was three just moments later with Vladimir Marin special. When you see a free-kick fly in at forty yards you would normally be shocked, but when you see Marin line up, you except it. Once again, an unbelievable effort sailing straight into the top corner of the net making Henao look foolish. To celebrate, Marin went to the bench and stole head coach Alvarez’s jacket.

It was a poor display in defence and front of goal by Once Caldas, who may look to add to their squad sooner rather than later.

ENVIGADO 0-1 JUNIOR

A 12th minute Luis Carlos Ruiz spot-kick settled the Sunday night game as Junior the three points against a new-look Envigado side giving debuts to four new players.

The goal came about after Andrés Felipe Orozco pulled down Jossymar Gómez, when a free-kick was floated in towards the pair. It was dubious decision by referee Ramiro Suárez but Ruiz sent Jimmy Schmidt the wrong way to give Junior the three points.

The 2013/2014 Apertura in Chile began this weekend with some intriguing results to kick off proceedings. The performance of the weekend came courtesy of Antofagasta who claimed a 1-0 home victory over reigning champions, Unión Española. The title holders fell victim to an 18th minute goal from Javier Elizondo. The Argentinian striker was joint top-scorer in the league last campaign with fourteen goals, and he has certainly started this season in the same rich vein of form as Unión Española failed to get out the starting blocks.

Universidad Católica finished last season as runners-up on goal difference and their fortunes were the opposite to Unión Española as they secured a 3-0 home victory over Ñublense. José Muñoz opened his account for the season as he gave Los Cruzados the lead in only the 15th minute, as his effort beat Ñublense goalkeeper, Lucas Giovini. It was also a debut goal for Muñoz following his pre-season move from Everton. The final two goals came from players previously embedded within the squad as Alfonso Parot added a second on the stroke of half-time, then Michael Rios scored the winner in the 89th minute.

The second surprise result saw Universidad De Chile slip to a 1-0 home defeat to Rangers. The visitors left it late to secure all three points as substitute, Esteban Ciacchieri, bagged a debut goal in the 86th minute. It’s been a torrid few weeks for new Uni De Chile boss, Marco Figueroa as he saw his side recently finish bottom of their Copa Chile group with only five points from six games. The Rangers defeat was hardly the confidence boost La U required ahead of their upcoming Copa Sudamericana tie against Bolivian side, Real Potosí in midweek.

The performers of the weekend were Audax Italiano as they thumped their way to a 4-0 home victory over Colo Colo. The hosts looked as if they would face an uphill battle as Mauricio Arias received a red card in the 26th minute. Despite this, Audax Italiano managed to gain a two-goal advantage despite the one-man deficit. Bryan Carrasco scored the opener in the 49th minute before Felipe Mora added a second in the 75th. The pressure must have got the Colo Colo as they capitulated shortly afterwards with Lucas Domínguez earning himself a second yellow card in the 78th minute to even up the numbers, and he also conceded a penalty in the process. Christian Canuhé converted the resulting penalty before Carrasco rubbed salt into Colo Colo’s wounds with a fourth late on.

Last season’s third-placed side, Cobreloa began their campaign well with a 2-0 home win against newly-promoted team, Universidad Concepción. Jonathan Chávez scored the opener in the 25th minute with the tie sealed in the second half as Gaston Lezcano fired home in the 64th. O’Higgins finished in fourth last season and they made it three teams out of four from the top four to power to victory as they claimed a 1-0 victory in their visit to Deportes Iquique. Pablo Calandria added to his seven goals from last season with a second-half winner.

The opening match of the weekend saw Palestino come away with all the spoils thanks to a 2-0 away victory at Everton. Defender, Leonardo Valencia grabbed the first in the opening fourty-five minutes, then Sergio López scored the winner with a penalty in the second half. Santiago Wanderers also got off to a good start as they won 1-0 away to Huachipato, thanks to a solitary goal from Franz Schulz.

Out of the nine opening round match-ups there would be only one draw played out. Unión La Calera and last season’s whipping boys, Cobresal cancelled each other out with a 1-1 draw. What was more impressive was the fact that Cobresal still managed to claim a point despite ending the game with only eight players on the pitch. Lucas Parodi, Ever Cantero and Mariano Torres were all sent off by the 68th minute as Cobresal somehow managed to hold on for a draw until the final whistle. Before all the sending-off’s, Johan Fuentes has given Cobresal the lead in the 40th minute, before La Calera evened up matters only eight minutes later as Pablo Vergara scored the equaliser.

The opening weekend proved to be a fantastic advertisement for what is to come with surprise victories backed up by an interesting statistic from the opening weekend. Each of the eight winners from the opening round managed to hold onto a clean sheet in the process with the single draw being the only game to see goals at both end in a game.

Results:

Everton 0-2 Palestino

Huachipato 0-1 Santiago Wanderers

Unión La Calera 1-1 Cobresal

Universidad De Chile 0-1 Rangers

Antofagasta 1-0 Unión Española

Audax Italiano 4-0 Colo Colo

Deportes Iquique 0-1 O’Higgins
