Definidos os mandos de campo da Copa do Brasil: veja os confrontos

Em um hotel na Barra da Tijuca, Zona Oeste do Rio de Janeiro, foram definidos nesta terça-feira os mandos de campo das oitavas de final da Copa do Brasil. No início da tarde os confrontos haviam sido sorteados. Agora, também por meio de sorteio, os clubes puderam saber onde jogarão primeiro, em seus domínios ou no estádio do adversário.

O Corinthians vai atuar inicialmente fora de casa, no Mato Grosso, depois em São Paulo diante do Luverdense; o Santos abre o desafio com o Grêmio em casa, depois vai a Porto Alegre; o Inter enfrenta o Salgueiro no Rio Grande do Sul, depois vai a Pernambuco; o Palmeiras joga primeiro em São Paulo, depois vai ao Paraná contra o Atlético-PR; o Fluminense pega o Goiás no Rio de Janeiro, para depois ir a Goiânia; o Vasco inicia a longa viagem fora de casa, em Manaus, em seguida volta ao Rio; enquanto isso o Botafogo encara o Atlético-MG como mandante para depois ir a Minas Gerais; por outro lado, o Cruzeiro joga a primeira em Minas, depois visita o Flamengo.

As datas exatas das partidas ainda não foram definidas. O certo é que as partidas de ida acontecerão nos dias 21 e 22 de agosto, com as de volta entre 28 e 29 do mesmo mês.

Entenda como funcionou o sorteio

Mais cedo ocorreu a definição dos confrontos. No pote A do sorteio estavam os clubes que disputaram a Taça Libertadores - Atlético-MG, Corinthians, Fluminense, Grêmio e Palmeiras, mais o Vasco, quinto do Brasileiro 2012 e que substituiu o São Paulo. O Tricolor paulista disputará a Sul-Americana por ser o atual campeão e não entrará na Copa do Brasil. Completaram o primeiro pote Flamengo e Internacional, melhores ranqueados na CBF e desde a primeira fase participando do torneio.

No pote B estavam clubes em piores colocações no ranking da entidade e que também disputam a Copa do Brasil desde o início. São eles Atlético-PR, Botafogo, Cruzeiro, Goiás, Luverdense, Nacional-AM, Salgueiro e Santos.

Cada confronto das oitavas necessariamente tinha de ser formado por um time do bloco A e um do bloco B. Primeiro, foram sorteados todos os times do bloco A, e só depois foram conhecidos seus adversários.

O sorteio do bloco A foi dividido em quatro duplas, com base mais uma vez no ranking da CBF. A primeira dupla foi formada por Fluminense (1º do ranking) e Corinthians (2º); a segunda, por Vasco (3º) e Grêmio (5º); a terceira, por Inter (6º) e Flamengo (7º); a quarta, por por Palmeiras (8º) e Atlético-MG (12º). Para cada time da dupla, foi sorteado um lado do diagrama (esquerdo ou direito) e qual jogo daquele lado ele fará (jogo 1, 2, 3 ou 4). Na sequência, obedecendo o ranking, foram sorteados os times do pote B e o jogo de cada equipe.

Atlético Nacional seal their path to the second stage

Atlético Nacional booked their place in the second stage of the Copa Sudamericana after a 4-0 thrashing at home against Peruvian club Inti Gas in the city of Medellin. Nacional triumphed with a brace from John Edward Paloy, at 18 and 62 minutes, and goals from Juan Pablo Angel (33) and Elkin Street (82).

U. de Chile passes to the second stage after thumping Real Potosí 5-0


Universidad de Chile moved Tuesday to the second phase of the Copa Sudamericana after thrashing Real Potosi of Bolivia 5-0 in second-leg match played at the Nacional stadium in Santiago.

The goals of the U were scored by striker Isaac Diaz (31, 88-penalty), midfielder Charles Aránguiz (41-penalty, 57) and midfielder Gustavo Lorenzetti (90).

Thus The U de Chile turned the tables in the series as they lost the first-leg 3-1.

Liga de Loja is onto the next stage

Jose Torrealba´s goal in the 21st minute for the hosts did not serve to change the series in a game that was very difficult from the start. Liga de Loja equalized through James Barboza in the 89th to sentence the series.

Uruguay´s River Plate thumps Blooming, advances to second stage


Uruguay´s River Plate advanced to the second round of the 2013 Copa Sudamericana after thrashing Blooming of Bolivia 4-0 in the match played at the Luis Franzini stadium in Montevideo.

Striker Sebastián Taborda, in the 38 and 61 minutes, Michael Santos (51) and Cristian Techera (84) got the goals for River Plate. River had also won the first-leg 1-0 last week in Santa Cruz de la Sierra.

The locals were determined to outlast their opponent. The wide margin of victory showed how sub-par the Bolivian team´s performance really was. Gross errors in defense and little weight in offense marked the fate of Victor Hugo Andrada´s team.

River pressed the Bolivians with quick plays from the sides and up the front which showed the deficiencies of Blooming´s last line of defense.

River opened the scoring with a goal by Taborda who came into the box alone and took advantage of a Techera centering pass to put the ball home.

The rout would be on in the second half. First a grievous error in defense was taken advantage of by Santos to make it 2-0.

Taborda then got his second goal of the game and Techera scored a spectacular goal lofting the ball over the goalkeeper Jorge Ruth, a touch of quality that closed a flawless performance by River.

With their passage to the second stage, River surpassed its last appearance in the regional tournament in 2010 when they lost in the first stage to Guarani of Paraguay.

River will now face the winner of the series between Colombian club Itagüi and Juan Aurich of Peru. The Colombians have one foot in the next stage as they won the first-leg 3-0.

Pasto is the first team to qualify to the second stage of the Sudamericana

Colombia´s Deportivo Pasto was the first team to qualify to the second stage of the 2013 Copa Sudamericana, although they fell to Melgar 0-2 in the second-leg. The match was played at the Melgar IV Centenario stadium in the city of Arequipa.

Melgar´s goals were scored by Paraguayan Oscar Gamarra in the 33rd minute and Yisrael Zuñiga in the 43rd.

While proposing an offensive game in the first 45 minutes of the match, the team led by coach Franco Navarro failed to erase the 3-0 deficit from the first-leg game.

Deportivo Pasto will face in the second stage the winner of the series between Uruguayan club El Tanque Sisley and Colo Colo of Chile.

Pope pays "religiously" his quota for football club San Lorenzo

The Pope pays "religiously" his quota for club San Lorenzo of Argentina, of whom he has been a fan since childhood, said the vice president of the club, Marcelo Tinelli, a popular TV host.

"I asked myself ´does he pay´? I confirmed that he is up to date and he religiously pays each month (on time) the fee," said the businessman to Fox Sports.

Francisco, who has member number 88,235, pays the fee for being an honorary member of the club since March 2008 when he was archbishop of Buenos Aires and held mass in the chapel in San Lorenzo.

Tinelli will travel next weekend to Rome as a member of the Argentina delegation that will participate in the friendly between Argentina and Italy on Wednesday the 14th in homage to the Pope.

Before the game, the Argentine Pope will receive both teams in a private meeting in the Clementine Hall of the Apostolic Palace, according to a Vatican spokesman.

The spokesman ruled out the possibility that Francisco would attend the match to be held in Rome´s Olympic stadium, as was expected by many of the fans.

The Pope is a huge football fan and usually offers as gifts football shirts, mainly from his favorite team, San Lorenzo de Almagro.

The San Lorenzo players wore a special jersey in honor of the Pope in the first game they played after his inauguration.

San Lorenzo also commissioned a special design for a jersey that was sent to the Vatican as a personal gift to the Pope, who was elected to the throne of Peter on March 13.

The jersey has Francisco´s name with a golden halo above and the phrase ´Pope Francisco. We pray for you, pray for us."

Sampaoli leaves off the team two players for Chile´s friendly with Iraq

The coach of Chile, Jorge Sampaoli, had to leave off the list for the friendly against Iraq, Eduardo Vargas and Francisco Silva, who are both injured.

The coach of the Chilean team, the Argentine Jorge Sampaoli, dismissed two players from the roster for the friendly against Iraq that will be played on August 14 in Denmark.

The players who were dismissed are forward Eduardo Vargas (Gremio, Brazil) and midfielder Francisco Silva (Osasuna, Spain), according to a statement from the Chilean Football Federation.

For a replacement, Sampaoli summoned young midfielder Bryan Ravelo, of Seville in Spain and member of the Under-20 team who participated in the World Cup in Turkey.

20 players were summoned for this friendly including the return of midfielder Jorge Valdivia (Palmeiras, Brazil).

The match will be played in Copenhagen on August 14 and will help Chile in their preparation for the World Cup qualifiers.

Chile, fourth with 21 points, will welcome Venezuela, sixth with 16 points, to Santiago for the qualifier on September 6.

Ecuador excludes its star Valencia for Spain friendly


Ecuador excluded midfielder Antonio Valencia from the squad that will face Spain in a friendly on August 14 in Guayaquil, the Ecuadorian Football Federation (FEF) reported Tuesday.

The absence of Valencia (Manchester United) and the call-up of veteran Edison Méndez (LDU Quito, 34 years) for the duel with Spain, are the main stories coming out of Ecuador´s camp. Coach Reinaldo Rueda will be coaching his first game without star Christian "Chucho" Benitez, who died on July 29 of a heart failure.

Rueda called-up Narciso Mina (América, Mexico) to be the replacement.

The friendly against Spain will allow Rueda to test the team without Benítez ahead of the last four World Cup qualifying dates, in which Ecuador is third behind Colombia and Argentina.

The qualifiers provide four direct berths to the World Cup next year.

Among those called to face Spain include striker Felipe Caicedo (Lokomotiv, Russia), midfielder Christian Noboa (Dynamo Moscow), Jefferson Montero (Morelia, Mexico) and Joao Rojas (Cruz Azul, Mexico).

A funny thing happened in Montevideo today, Nacho González finally took pen to paper and signed with Club Nacional. How big was this move? Well it depends; big enough for those who saw Nacional lose to Atlético Madrid in a rare friendly played in Montevideo on Sunday forget about the loss, big enough for some Danubio fans to blast González a traitor on social media spaces and big enough for Nacional to imagine defeating their eternal rival once again and maybe dream of a Libertadores conquest.

Arguably Uruguay´s best playmaker returns to Uruguayan football but with the wrong team?

How important is this signing for Nacional? Players and coaches have come and gone but this signing is similar to the arrival of Juan Ramón Carrasco two years ago, insofar that it may just tip the balance in Nacional’s favor… maybe.

The question that will be asked I’m sure is, will it matter in the end? Did Nacho arrive too late? Probably not. Uruguay’s domestic league gives players into their 30′s a second life. After years of bouncing around in Europe looking for a club to call home, Nacho finally comes home, but the move back to Uruguay may have come with a heavy price, is he the same player he was when he left? Nacho’s European career was scarred by debilitating injuries and pit-stops in far-out left European leagues like the Greek Super League and Belgium’s Jupiler League. His return to Spanish football was not at Valencia or Levante but to 2nd division side Hércules. All the while, the backward turns his career took made him a non-consideration for Uruguay’s national team.

But his return to Uruguayan football begs the following question to be asked. Is Nacho, Uruguay’s best enganche?

When this article series started, it could be said he probably was. And for a while, in Uruguay too many “media-puntas” were being considered “enganches” –– Today there are 4 pure enganches playing in Uruguay, one of them is Nacho González, another is Canobbio for Danubio… the other is the Under-20 player named after a racehorse who may or may not be sold to Barcelona, Giorgian De Arrascaeta from Defensor. The last is another Nacional player, no not Recoba… but Gastón Pereiro, who you ask? If Nacho is the present, then Pereiro who is only 18 years old, looks to be the future. “I keep telling him, he’s going to end up being Nacional’s number 10″ said El Chino a while back.

If De Arrascaeta moves to Europe, the question may be simply Canobbio or González? And right now it might be too early to bring up Pereiro’s name but it’s there, in the shadows maybe but there just the same. The argument starts up for real soon when the league gets underway.

In the meantime, Nacional by way of magic managed to stockpile 3 very good playmakers on the same team. Will it work? In a league where support strikers often time get saddled with the responsibility of running a team’s offense, having 3 playmakers can’t hurt, can it?

Brazilians´ future in doubt as Anzhi prepare for overhaul

The futures of Brazilian stars Willian, Jucilei, Ewerton and João Carlos are in doubt after Anzhi Makhachkala´s owner declared his intention to offload a host of players.

Anzhi´s billionaire owner Suleiman Kerimov is planning to sell off his most expensive stars and drastically cut the club´s budget, according to AFP.

Kerimov took over the club in January 2011 and initiated a huge spending spree, hoping to turn the side into Russia´s major power.

But Russian publication Sport Express reported that after Anzhi´s 1-0 defeat to Rostov on Friday, Kerimov suffered health issues leading to his decision to reform the club.

The news will throw uncertainty over the futures of stars such as Cameroon captain Samuel Eto´o, Brazil´s Willian and Russian international Yury Zhirkov.

But according to Sport Express, Kerimov said he was not selling the club and that former manager Gadzhi Gadzhiev would take over the helm in the near future.

Acosta habló de los festejos de Silva

BUENOS AIRES -- El delantero Lautaro Acosta negó que los festejos por los goles del uruguayo "no fueron para el DT de Boca, debido a que al convertir los dos tantos frente a Belgrano, Santiago Silva con los dedos de su mano derecha simuló rascarse la cabeza, gesto habitual en el técnico.

Sucedió que ambos jugadores no eran tenidos en cuenta por el entrenador `xeneixe` por lo que recalaron en el equipo granate, donde formaron sociedad en la delantera junto a Silvio Romero, quien generó las dos jugadas que definió el exgoleador de Vélez Sarsfield y Banfield y al que Acosta acompañó en los festejos.

Por lo que el Laucha le explicó a Télam "el festejo fue improvisado en el vestuario antes de salir a la cancha, lo pensó el Pelado, pero sin ninguna mala onda ni con una intención hacia Carlos (Bianchi)".

A lo que agregó el atacante nacido en Glew "si hubiésemos tenido esa intención habríamos preparado otros gestos más característicos de Bianchi", como por ejemplo "ponerse los brazos en jarra o encorvar la pierna derecha", para aclarar que el DT boquense "acostumbra rascarse la nuca y Silva lo hizo más arriba de la coronilla".

Ahora, habrá que estar preparado para los nuevos festejos porque "todo fue improvisado", ya con más tiempo de entrenamientos y de concentración "prometió Silva que los vamos a organizar mejor", hasta con algún "ensayo previo", deslizó Acosta.

Pese al triunfo holgado frente a Belgrano, el propio delantero de Lanús comentó "no fue sencillo superarlo porque con su presión nos complicó la salida y el juego", por éso cerca del final del primer tiempo "el gol del ´Pelado´ fue determinante para que después jugáramos más tranquilos".

A propósito, el próximo partido será de visitante frente a Atlético de Rafaela, el jueves a las 17, por lo que Acosta estima "será otro duro rival".

Explicó que este adversario "es similar a Belgrano" a raíz de que "se cierra mucho en el fondo y contraataca", por eso deberán "estar prevenidos para no sufrir ninguna sorpresa".

Para contrarrestar esto el Laucha consideró que Lanús "debe presionar más arriba para quitarle la pelota y estar cerca de su área para desequilibrar y llegar al gol".

También, habló de los recaudos "es fundamental no desesperarse cuando se enfrentan equipos de esta clase, como nos aconseja Guillermo (Barros Schelotto)", por lo que deben seguir las instrucciones del DT "asegurar la pelota al piso y generar juego desde el fondo".

El comienzo fue auspicioso para los granates, aunque Acosta le señaló a Télam "si pretendemos altos logros debemos jugar siempre muy concentrados", al tiempo que aseveró que "para nosotros cada partido debe ser una final".

River acordó el regreso de Mora

BUENOS AIRES -- En un martes en el que la impaciencia del entrenador Ramón Díaz era evidente por la inhabilitación que todavía afecta a Teófilo Gutiérrez y Jonathan Fabbro, por la noche del martes surgió al menos un paliativo, dado que Rodrigo Mora arregló de palabra su continuidad en River Plate, aunque para que esa tratativa se formalice Rogelio Funes Mori debe finiquitar su incorporación al Benfica portugués.

En la noche de este martes, el delantero uruguayo Mora paso por el Monumental para resolver favorablemente su continuidad en el club y de palabra el tema quedó resuelto, pero quedó pendiente la firma del nuevo vínculo.

Para que Mora regularice su situación con los Millonarios resta que el juvenil artillero Rogelio Funes Mori le dé forma a su arribo al Benfica, ya que las dos operaciones se hallan relacionadas.

De este modo la entidad de Núñez se sacará también un doble problema de encima, dado que desde el punto de vista futbolístico Rogelio era muy resistido por la parcialidad de la banda roja, más allá de su capacidad potencial, y se quería evitar que dentro de un año negociara una transferencia como futbolista dueño de su pase.

En cuanto al cupo de extranjeros, otra de las dificultades que tenía River para retener a Mora, se solucionará porque el mediocampista uruguayo Carlos Sánchez continuará su campaña en el Puebla de México.

Este martes, pero temprano, Ramón Díaz, aseguró que el colombiano Teo Gutiérrez y Fabbro "están ansiosos porque tienen muchas ganas de jugar", al mostrar su impaciencia porque ambos atacantes todavía no fueron habilitados para debutar con su nueva camiseta.

"Siempre, lo que he visto acá en Argentina, es que cuando a las cosas las querés hacer rápido, las podemos definir rápidamente", argumentó Ramón al reclamar que Teo y Fabbro reciban las habilitaciones para poder jugar en el partido del viernes próximo ante Rosario Central.

En ambos casos quedan trámites por resolver que, según el vicepresidente de River, Diego Turnes, no dependen de River sino de terceros.

"¿Sabés cuál es el motivo por el que tenemos que esperar?", le preguntó un Ramón impaciente por la demora en las habilitaciones de los dos atacantes a un periodista en la conferencia de prensa que dio este martes en Ezeiza.

Un rato antes, durante el partido de práctica, Gutiérrez había anotado un gol para el equipo de suplentes al conectar con un cabezazo un rebote que dio Leandro Chichizola tras un tiro de Fabbro. El colombiano celebró la conquista apuntando con su dedo índice hacia el cielo, como suele hacer cada vez que anota en un encuentro oficial.

"Ojalá que los podamos tener para el viernes. Están ansiosos porque tienen muchas ganas de jugar y de meterse en el grupo", subrayó Ramón, ansioso por contar con los dos jugadores que le podrían dar un salto de calidad al ataque de River.

En un tono que osciló entre la queja y el lamento, comentó que "el club ha hecho muchísimos esfuerzos para traerlos y los tenés sólo para entrenar", a la vez que insistió en que le gustaría que Teo y Fabbro estén a su disposición "para ir definiendo el equipo definitivamente".
