Peru Primera Division Wrap: Real Garcilaso seal top spot

Real Garcilaso will enter the Peru Primera Division second phase as the top side after a 3-1 win over Jose Galvez.

Strikes either side of half-time from Mauricio Montes and Jhoel Herrera put Garcilaso in a commanding position against the division´s last-placed side.

They suffered a setback in the 54th minute with the dismissal of midfielder Cesar Ortiz.

But Jose Galvez could not take advantage as substitute Fabio Ramos struck for Garcilaso in the 69th minute to seal the points.

There was time for a consolation goal for Jose Galvez through Cesar Medina on 77 minutes but Garcilaso saw out the match and now have an unassailable seven-point lead with two matches to play in the first phase.

Universitario clung onto second position in an incident-packed 1-0 away victory against Pacifico.

Manuel Ruidiaz put Universitario in front from the spot in the 71st minute before both sides were reduced to 10 men in a frantic six-minute period.

Pacifico´s Mauro Cantoro was given his second yellow card on 76 minutes and Universitario´s John Galliquio suffered the same fate in the 82nd minute.

Sporting Cristal remained in third place after a comfortable 2-0 win over Union Comercio.

A sixth-minute strike from Irven Avila sent Cristal on their way before Joaquin Lencinas put through his own net to condemn Comercio to their third straight loss.

International Friendly Preview: Chile v Iraq

Chile will hope to gain momentum ahead of the next round of FIFA World Cup qualifiers when they take on Iraq on Wednesday.

Jorge Sampaoli´s men head into the contest at Brondby Stadion in Denmark sitting fourth in the CONMEBOL qualifying section, five points clear of Uruguay, who occupy the intercontinental play-off spot.

However, they next face a tough encounter with Venezuela on September 6, knowing that a win would put them on the brink of securing a place at the finals in Brazil next year.

FIFA 2014 World Cup hosts Brazil will look to extend their 11-match unbeaten run when they take on Switzerland on Wednesday.

Luiz Felipe Scolari´s men head into the international friendly contest at St Jakob-Park on a high after winning the FIFA Confederations Cup on home soil in July, completing their triumph with a 3-0 victory over Spain in the final.

The Brazil coach has opted to keep faith with virtually the same squad that won the World Cup warm-up event, with the only addition coming in the form of Paris Saint-Germain defender Maxwell.

Neymar - who joined Spanish champions Barcelona for €57million in the close-season - is also among those set to be given another chance to shine, with reported Bayern Munich target David Luiz likely to continue at the heart of the defence.

The game will provide Scolari with another opportunity to continue cementing his side ahead of the World Cup finals a year from now.

By contrast, Switzerland are still very much battling to secure their place in the showpiece.

Ottmar Hitzfeld´s side currently sit at the top of qualifying Group E, but with four games still to play they will use the opportunity to sharpen up ahead of the next round of fixtures against Iceland and then Norway later this year.

History is not on their side, however, with the Swiss having beaten Brazil just once in 10 meetings between the two nations - a 1-0 victory in 1989.

International Friendly Preview: South Korea v Peru

South Korea´s resilient defence will likely be put to the test by a strong Peru forward line when the two sides meet in Suwon on Wednesday.

The hosts have conceded just four goals in their last six fixtures, including two clean sheets in the East Asian Cup against China and Australia, as they finished third in the competition.

However, with Peru bringing an impressive array of attacking talent for the international friendly clash, the home side´s miserly rearguard is likely to come under pressure - particularly given the absence of Kim Young-gwon, who has been left out as he is due to feature for club side Guangzhou Evergrande in the Chinese Super League just two days before the fixture.
