Cagna: volver "no es un retroceso"

BUENOS AIRES -- El entrenador de Tigre, Diego Cagna, aseguró el martes que regresar al elenco de Victoria en el que dio sus primeros pasos como técnico "no fue un retroceso", al tiempo que elogió el rendimiento en las primeras dos fechas de José Sand, pese a que todavía el delantero no pudo marcar.

"Volver a un club al que quiero mucho no lo tomo como un retroceso, es seguir creciendo como técnico, agarrando experiencia en un equipo por el que siento y que me tiene mucho cariño", afirmó Cagna, quien dirigió también a Newell´s y Estudiantes de La Plata en Argentina, y a Colo Colo en Chile.

Por otra parte, el técnico del Matador respaldó a Sand, quien llegó para este torneo a Tigre desde Racing, donde no pudo repetir la performance realizada en Lanús.

"Es un jugador que ha rendido en otros equipos en otros momentos y es importante, nos puede aportar muchísimo. Que rindan los jugadores va a hacer que el equipo juegue bien y gane. Esperemos que Pepe lo haga, que haga goles", señaló el entrenador en diálogo con un canal deportivo.

Además, Cagna destacó que "la gente lo recibió bien" a Sand, que "lo quiere y ha jugado muy bien".

"Quizás uno pensaba en que podía entrar en ritmo y sorprendió por cómo rindió. Por ahí le falta lo más importante para un goleador que es hacer goles", sostuvo.

Tigre, que perdió en el debut como local ante Vélez y empató como visitante ante Olimpo en la segunda fecha, recibirá el domingo a las 16 en Victoria, en busca del primer triunfo en el torneo Inicial.

Patricio Vidal deja Independiente

BUENOS AIRES -- El delantero tucumano Patricio Vidal abandonó el martes la concentración de Independiente y jugará a préstamo por una temporada en Unión Española de Chile, último campeón del país trasandino que transita un flojo andar en el actual certamen de ese país.

Vidal, de 21 años, jugó 26 partidos en la Primera División de Independiente y anotó sólo dos goles.

"Fue todo muy rápido. Me dijeron que había una posibilidad de ir a Chile y no lo dudé. Tengo 21 años y necesito continuidad. Fue la mejor decisión que pude tomar. Me hubiese gustado irme jugando y con Independiente en Primera", expresó el atacante al sitio Infierno Rojo.

Y agregó: "Unión Española es un club serio y grande de allá que va a jugar copas internacionales".

Vidal no era tenido en cuenta por el técnico Miguel Angel Brindisi, ya que por encima de él comenzó a utilizar en la B Nacional a Cristian Menéndez, Sebastián Penco y Matías Pisano, los refuerzos ofensivos que llegaron para esta temporada. Además, se agrega Facundo Parra, quien está preparándose físicamente para debutar en su segundo ciclo en el Rojo.

Vélez vendió a Peruzzi al Catania

BUENOS AIRES -- El defensor argentino Gino Peruzzi fue presentado el martes como nuevo jugador del Catania italiano.

Peruzzi, de 21 años, jugó en Argentina en Vélez Sarsfield y durante el último receso de temporada se había truncado su pase al Sunderland inglés, al no superar la revisación médica por una lesión ligamentaria.

De esta manera, el defensor sumará rodaje para estar a disposición del entrenador del seleccionado argentino, Alejandro Sabella, de cara al Mundial de Brasil 2014.

Durante el último mercado de pases Vélez realizó, además de la operación de Peruzzi, las transferencias del mediocampista Iván Bella a los Jaguares de Chiapas mexicanos y la del delantero Facundo Ferreyra al Shakhtar Donetsk, de Ucrania.

Ledesma, golpeado y Ponzio lateral

BUENOS AIRES -- El director técnico de River, Ramón Díaz, busca ubicar al mediocampista Leonardo Ponzio entre los titulares, a pesar de que no tuvo un buen comienzo de torneo. Maidana, Bottinelli y Vangioni completaron la zaga millonaria.

El equipo de River desarrolló un breve ensayo de fútbol en el predio que el club posee en la localidad bonaerense de Ezeiza y en el mismo Leonardo Ponzio ocupó como lateral por el costado derecho.

El exjugador de Newell`s Old Boys se movió como marcador de punta y abandonó su habitual puesto en la mitad de la cancha, tras el ejercicio táctico que ordenó el ayudante Emiliano Díaz, quien asumió el control en el entrenamiento ante una nueva ausencia de su padre Ramón.

Es que el técnico principal, por segundo día consecutivo, debió ausentarse de la práctica, a causa de un fuerte cuadro gripal, con fiebre incluida.

Entonces, Emiliano dispuso que Ponzio sea el lateral por derecha, en uno de los equipos que completó la defensa con Jonatan Maidana, Jonathan Bottinelli y Leonel Vangioni.

La mitad de cancha se armó con el colombiano Carlos Carbonero, Matías Kranevitter, Ariel Rojas y Manuel Lanzini, mientras que los dos hombres de punta fueron Teófilo Gutiérrez (se espera su habilitación) y el juvenil Juan Kaprof.

En el otro elenco se alinearon Gabriel Mercado, Germán Pezzella, Eder Alvarez Balanta y Juan Cruz Marrone; Augusto Solari, Cristian Ledesma, Martín Aguirre, Osmar Ferreyra; Rodrigo Mora y Giovanni Simeone.

El mediocampista Ledesma se retiró de la práctica (tras un cruce con Rojas) con un ligero traumatismo en su tobillo derecho.

El juvenil Federico Andrada, autor de la conquista del triunfo sobre Rosario Central (1-0), no trabajó a la par de sus compañeros, por un dolor en la espalda. Todavía es una incógnita su evolución, pero se presume que ingresará en la consideración para el partido del domingo ante Godoy Cruz, en Mendoza, por la tercera fecha del Inicial.

El miércoles, el plantel millonario se entrenará a puertas cerradas, nuevamente en Ezeiza, probablemente con la presencia de Ramón Díaz.

El técnico principal aguardará también que llegue la habilitación de Gutiérrez desde México, cuando Cruz Azul acredite el pago de la transferencia del goleador.

Martinez yet to sign new Porto deal

Liverpool target Jackson Martinez has denied he has signed a contract extension with Porto, rekindling hopes he could move to England.

The 26-year-old striker had been heavily linked with a move to Napoli, but Italian reports appeared to quash those rumours when they stated Martinez had re-signed with Porto for another four years.

But although Martinez said he is not against remaining in Portugal, he was adamant he has not put pen to paper yet.

"I don´t want to force my departure from Porto. In fact, I really hope not to," Martinez told A Bola.

"Today the question I have is whether I extend my contract or go elsewhere.

"Apart from that there is nothing else to say.

"The problem is that I hear things that are not true.

"The press reported that I had agreed a new contract until 2018.

"I hadn´t even started to think about it because nobody at Porto had called me to talk about it."

Boca Juniors 2 - 3 Newell´s Old Boys

BUENOS AIRES (DyN) -- Newell´s Old Boys logró en la noche de este martes una valiosa victoria como visitante de Boca Juniors por 3-2, al cabo de un partido intenso, cambiante, en el que el vencedor justificó la victoria por su mayor orden y por haber cometido menos equivocaciones que su oponente.

En el debut de Alfredo Berti como director técnico en reemplazo del actual entrenador de Barcelona, Gerardo Martino, los rosarinos, campeones del último Torneo Final, se sobrepusieron a algunas notorias fallas del primer tiempo, mantuvieron el estilo que se les conoce con mucho cuidado de la pelota y comenzaron con éxito su andar en el torneo.

En el primero de los dos partidos postergados que debe saldar por haber participado de las semifinales de la Copa Libertadores de América, hubo lucidas producciones de Víctor Figueroa y Lucas Bernardi, además de la efectividad del paraguayo Víctor Aquino, autor de dos tantos.

La restante conquista para Newell´s en una victoria sin objeciones fue de Milton Casco, mientras que Nicolás Blandi y Daniel Díaz pusieron arriba momentáneamente a Boca.

Boca tuvo pasajes de buen trato de la pelota, contó con un buen aporte de su conductor Juan Román Riquelme, pero sus debilidades en defensa lo dejaron muy expuesto y cuando pasó a estar en desventaja no encontró más el rumbo en el cotejo.

Iban cuatro minutos de juego cuando Riquelme, Leandro Marín y Pablo Ledesma elaboraron una buena acción por la derecha y el capitán descargó para Juan Manuel Martínez, quien llegó hasta el fondo y tocó al medio para que Blandi, frente al arco, estableciera el 1-0.

Newell´s llegó al empate sobre el cuarto de hora, con una fórmula que iba a repetir a lo largo de toda la noche, volcando el juego hacia la izquierda de su ataque. Casco apareció para recibir el envío de Bernardi a espalda de Leandro Marín y definió con precisión.

En el tramo que sucedió del partido la visita afirmó la posesión y distribución, mientras que al local le costó recuperarla. En un muy buen momento de Newell´s, fue Boca el que se puso en ventaja después de un tiro de esquina desde la derecha que produjo un rechazo corto y Daniel Díaz tras controlar la pelota al borde del área con el pecho, despachó un derechazo incontenible al palo derecho de Nahuel Guzmán.

El final del primer período fue de Boca aunque Newell´s contó con una aparición de Figuera por izquierda en la que Díaz debió esforzarse para enviar al córner. A los 36, un remate del propio Figueroa frente al arco rebotó en Guillermo Burdisso y terminó en córner cuando se pedía penal.

A los 43, el Cata Díaz remató desviado ante el arco tras remate de Riquelme y, a los 45, el propio enlace probó desde afuera y exigió a Guzmán.

En los cinco primeros minutos del segundo segmento, Newell´s dio vuelta el partido ante un Boca que salió desconcentrado. Apenas se cumplía un minuto cuando Figueroa desde la izquierda, sector en el que fue amo y señor, colocó la pelota por bajo al área para la llegada de Aquino, quien dominó y definió ante Agustín Orion.

Sobre los cinco, Cristian Díaz recibió muy libre de Bernardi y colocó un preciso centro para que Aquino, con un cabezazo implacable al ángulo superior izquierdo de Orion, hiciera pasar al frente a los rosarinos.

En los minutos siguientes el equipo de Berti defendió muy atrás, pero Boca no encontró el camino y sobre los 15 Martín Tonso, solo ante Orion, se perdió el cuarto.

El equipo de Carlos Bianchi llegó a los 17 con un tiro libre de Riquelme y de inmediato con un disparo desde fuera del área de Marín, ambos rechazados por Guzmán.

En los últimos 20 minutos, la visita se reencontró con la pelota, llevó el partido a campo del adversario, y pudo haber aumentado a los 32 a través de Fabián Muñoz y a los 33 por intermedio de Pablo Pérez, ambas jugadas salvadas por Orion a costa de ceder un córner.

Boca nunca recuperó el control del juego, aunque volvió a darle trabajo a Guzmán con un disparo de larga distancia de Marín y en el quinto minuto agregado con un tiro libre de Riquelme, pero Newell´s nunca dejó de ser dueño de la situación y se llevó los tres puntos justificadamente.

"Newell´s aprovechó mejor"

BUENOS AIRES -- El entrenador de Boca Juniors, Carlos Bianchi, consideró que Newell´s Old Boys aprovechó mejor las oportunidades que se le presentaron y que ese fue el motivo del revés de su equipo por 3-2 como local.

"En el comienzo del segundo tiempo hubo alguna desconcentración, después volvimos a encontrar la pelota, pero ya no tuvimos tanta llegada. En definitiva, tenemos que ser realistas: Newell´s hizo un gol más y aprovechó mejor sus oportunidades", sostuvo el "Virrey" en conferencia de prensa.

Bianchi consideró que "el equipo hizo un buen primer tiempo, por momentos hasta mejor que con Belgrano" y consideró que Boca "no jugó mal, pero las desatenciones defensivas" lo llevaron a la derrota.

"Hay que saber muy bien que vamos a tener que seguir trabajando en la concentración", precisó, pero deslizó que un empate "hubiera sido lo lógico".

En esa dirección, el Virrey, argumentó: "No pudimos mantener la ventaja en los primeros minutos del segundo tiempo. Si ellos no hubieran logrado el empate enseguida se nos habría presentado el partido de otra manera. Hubiéramos tenido espacios. Tuvimos el dominio, pero no encontramos espacios".

"Newell´s mantiene la filosofía, tratan de salir jugando desde atrás. Nosotros los presionamos arriba y los complicamos bastante, y jugamos diferente a los partidos por la Copa", agregó.

Por último, se refirió al mediocampista Fernando Gago, refuerzo estrella que se recupera de una lesión muscular.

"Fernando no tiene el alta de los médicos. Mañana (miércoles) vamos a hablar con el doctor Batista para ver si la semana que viene puede empezar a trabajar con el grupo y a partir de ahí ver cómo se encuentra futbolísticamente", finalizó.

Belgrano 1 - 0 Vélez

CORDOBA (DyN) -- Belgrano presionó en todos los sectores a Vélez Sarsfield y se impuso 1-0 en su debut internacional, en el juego de ida por la segunda fase de la Copa Sudamericana.

En la casa de los Celestes, el Gigante del Barrio Alberdi, Belgrano ganó 1-0 por un gol en contra de Juan Sabia, el que ocurrió a los 16 minutos del primer tiempo.

El desquite está programado para el jueves 29 de este mes, en el Estadio José Amalfitani.

Como para completar una noche que le dejó un sabor desagradable, Sabia se quedó en los vestuarios en el entretiempo debido a un traumatismo en el pecho.

En el primer período Vélez intentó manejar la pelota, tal como es habitual desde que lo conduce Ricardo Gareca, pero el elenco careció de la profundidad necesaria.

El Tigre ya había admitido que extraña la falta de Facundo Chucky Ferreyra, el artillero que fue transferido al fútbol ucraniano por una millonada de euros, y esa ausencia se notó una vez más.

En cambio, los planes de Ricardo Zielinski resultaron tan eficaces como se torna frecuente, ya que al demostrar el conjunto concentración, solidez, solidaridad y dinámica, primero anuló a Vélez y luego hasta pudo vencer por más goles.

Ya en el primer episodio el Pirata dispuso de dos ocasiones como para sacar una diferencia mayor ante la impotencia de los Fortineros.

En el 1-0, César Pereyra elaboró la escena por derecha y su posterior centro fue conectado de volea por Jorge Velázquez. En el camino tuvo mala fortuna Sabia ya que el balón se desvió en su pie derecho y dejó sin chance al uruguayo Sebastián Sosa.

En dos réplicas Belgrano tuvo ocasiones como para aumentar, pero en la primera de ellas se demoró Lucas Aveldaño y lo taparon, y en la otra, Sosa salió lejos para bloquearle un mano a mano a Velázquez y, en el rebote, y desde 25 metros, cuando la portería se hallaba totalmente indefensa, Fernando Márquez tiró en forma desviada.

La segunda parte tuvo una perfecta relación con lo sucedido en la primera, ya que Vélez insistió en la iniciativa, pero el incansable Belgrano le cerró prácticamente todos los caminos que podían conducir hasta Juan Carlos Olave.

Apenas por un intento de Lucas Pratto y otro del juvenil Ramiro Cáseres tuvo que intervenir a Olave, pero el triunfo fue inobjetable. Para mayor complicación de los de Liniers, a diez minutos del epílogo, a Sebastián Domínguez el recién ingresado uruguayo Carlos Bueno lo tomó de un brazo desde atrás y cuando el experimentado zaguero hizo un movimiento para sacárselo de encima fue expulsado por el árbitro Diego Ceballos.

Fue entonces que Gareca optó por reemplazar a Federico Insúa para rearmar la defensa y por lo tanto a Vélez el arco de los Celestes se le volvió inviolable.

A DISTORTED VISTA: THE FADING LIGHT OF FOOTBALL PUERTO RICO

Two years ago I wrote abut the emergence of Puerto Rico as a football nation. The Puerto Rico Islanders were making waves in the USL and were on the verge of joining the NASL, the new second tier of the American Soccer pyramid.

The national side were back playing regular games after a lengthy absence from the international stage and the Puerto Rico Soccer League appeared to be moving in the right direction.

The soccer revolution on the island was in part down to former Northern Ireland international Colin Clarke. The former Peterborough, Southampton, QPR and Portsmouth striker was in charge of both the Puerto Rico Islanders and the national team from 2007 and 2008 respectively.

Clarke left Puerto Rico In December 2011 after being offered the head coach job at NASL side Carolina Rail Hawks. It was the end of a successful relationship between Clarke and Puerto Rican soccer, not only had the Irishman led the national side to their first win since 1994, he also took the Islanders to the semi-finals of the CONCACAF Champions League in 2008.

Clarke’s assistant, former Portsmouth defender Adrian Whitbread, was the man given the job of replacing the 50-year-old ahead of the 2012 NASL season.

The Puerto Rican FA had already appointed former Costa Rican international Jeaustin Campos as the new head coach of the national side in August, after they opted for a full-time manager ahead of the upcoming World Cup qualifying campaign.

Campos, who previously managed Puerto Rican club side Bayamón FC in 2010, was in charge for just a month before the World Cup qualifying campaign began.

The Blue Hurricane drew their opening group game 0-0 with Saint Kitts & Nevis before losing 3-0 to Canada at home. They then went undefeated in the group, drawing with Saint Kitts & Nevis again before holding Canada to a 0-0 draw and beating Saint Lucia both home and away. Puerto Rico eventually finished runners-up in the group behind a far more experienced Canada squad.

Moving into 2012 the national side recorded back-to-back wins when they beat Bermuda 2-1 and thrashed Saint Martin 9-0 in the first qualifying stage for the 2013 Gold Cup. A narrow 2-1 defeat to Haiti saw Puerto Rico finish second in the group, which was enough for them to qualify for the next round group stage.

Unfortunately Campos’ men failed to win a game in a group that featured the Dominican Republic, Martinique and Guadeloupe as they crashed out in the second round of qualifying.

However, it was with the Under-20 national side that Campos made history by leading his side to the final round of a World Cup qualifying tournament, the first time in the country’s history that a men’s football team had made it to that stage.

A 0-0 draw in their final match with group winners Haiti was enough to see the young Puerto Ricans qualify for 2013 CONCACAF U-20 Championship in Mexico.

Campos’ inexperienced youngsters went down 4-1 to Jamaica in their opening match in front of a crowd of 21,000 in Puebla. A 4-0 defeat to Panama saw them finish bottom of the three-team group, but the achievement of making it to Mexico in the first place is one that shouldn’t be underestimated.

Meanwhile the Islanders, with Whitbread in charge, finished third in the regular NASL season in 2012 but were beaten in the first round of the play-offs by eventual finalists the Minnesota Stars. Despite an impressive debut NASL season for the Islanders, their campaign was marred by the fact they had to play 10 of their 14 homes matches at the tiny Bayamon Soccer Complex while work was being carried out on their Juan Ramón Loubriel Stadium. The change of ground resulted in average home attendance of just 1,864, the second lowest in the league.

The Puerto Rican government, who also financially back the Islanders funded the $7,000,000 regeneration of the Juan Ramón Loubriel Stadium. The plan being is to turn the ground, which was originally built for baseball, into a soccer-specific stadium.

However, the stadium has been left with out a regular tenant for the 2013 season after the Islanders opted to sit-out both the spring and fall NASL season formats. News first emerged of the clubs plans to sit-out the 2013 spring season of the NASL in December 2012, with the intentions of rejoining the league for the fall season.

The hiatus was due to the Puerto Rican government’s ongoing financial backing of the club, which had been thrown into doubt after an upheaval in the government following the 2012 general elections. Alejandro García Padilla defeated incumbent governor Luis Fortuño, with Padilla’s Popular Democratic Party wresting majorities in both Puerto Rico’s Senate and House of Representatives away from Fortuño’s New Progressive Party.

The Islanders’ ownership group is made up of a confederation of investors with varying stakes in the club, led by Andrés Guillemard-Noble. Due to the club not having a primary majority owner supplying the club’s funding, the principal source of financing for the Islanders has always been the Puerto Rican government.

With the future of the Islanders still in limbo, the clubs owners announced in February that they had taken the decision to also withdraw from the fall season. The NASL later confirmed that they had accepted the clubs decision to miss the entire 2013 campaign and that they would allow the Islanders to make a return to the competition in 2014.

The decision to miss the entire NASL season meant that head coach Whitbread was forced into making the “difficult decision” to leave Puerto Rico after five years on the Island.

In an emotional interview with the local media Whitbread stated that he felt he was leaving Puerto Rican soccer in a better place than when he’d arrived in 2008.

However, the 41-year-old also expressed his concerns over the lack of opportunities now available for Puerto Rican players to play professional soccer. When questioned about whether or not he felt the Islanders would return in 2014, Whitbread admitted that it was difficult for him to say yes or no.

“I hope sincerely in my heart that they do [return in 2014], because they actually know, outside of possibly one or two teams here on the island, what it is to play in a professional league,” he added.

“Until there is a professional league up and running in Puerto Rico, it’s not going to improve.”

The creation of the Puerto Rico Soccer League in 2008 looked like a step in the right direction for soccer on the island. However, just four seasons later, the league is now defunct. The PRSL has since been replaced by Liga Nacional de Fútbol de Puerto Rico as the top flight of soccer on the Island. The LNF was originally founded as the second tier of soccer in Puerto Rico, sitting below the then newly created Puerto Rico Soccer League.

The LNF has undergone numerous restructuring processes in its short existence, in its current format the league is run as a single-division format with nine teams competing across the island.

2011 champions Bayamón FC currently lead the way in this seasons campaign ahead of Sevilla FC, an affiliated club of the Spanish La Liga club of the same name.

With the future of the Islanders still in doubt and the constant restructuring of the national leagues, the future of soccer in Puerto Rico doesn’t look as bright as it once did. However, the performance of the Under-20’s suggests there is still a glimmer of hope for the sport on the Island.

Argentine-born ´Chaco´ Gimenez is coming to the rescue

NEW YORK -- Can Christian "Chaco" Gimenez change the course of history for the Mexican national team?

His past proves that he can. His more recent actions temper that belief.

Did he help to change Pachuca´s history? He did so, without a doubt.

Did he help to change Cruz Azul´s history? No. He couldn´t do it. He was 34 seconds away from doing so against America. But he wasn´t able to score that fateful penalty.

So, at this time, has he earned a spot on the national team?

Yes, without a doubt. But mainly because the Mexican-born candidates for those positions have left doubts.

Let´s put together a short list of players who could and should be a part of the Mexican national team, but still have to prove themselves on the pitch.

Because of their youth, the dynamics and their advantage in some technical aspects, it is clear that Marco Fabian, Giovani dos Santos and Angel Reyna all fit this criteria.

1. Marco Fabian, who was close heading to Europe two years ago, is today in Chivas. Sometimes, given his desire to play solely and exclusively for Atletico Marco Fabián FC, he ends up betraying his Tri team commitment, as he did against Panama in the Gold Cup.

2. Gio continues to find instability in Spain, and it is not his fault. He has only found asylum in clubs of little worth, low aspirations and low internal competitive demands. He is one of a kind, but he sometimes forgets the environment in which he is playing, forgets that his physical and mental rhythm is not well interpreted by his teammates and ends up condemning himself and being condemned.

3. Angel Reyna lives in the fascinating isolation of his egocentricity. Recently, only Carlos Reinoso and Juan Antonio Luna have been able to decipher what is happening in the recesses of that little head. Reinoso made him a scoring champion, and Luna has him pegged with coaches who failed with him, including one who could seemingly do no wrong, Victor Manuel Vucetich.

Chaco´s temperament is where he differs from the three individuals just mentioned.

This Monday on Raza Deportiva on ESPN Deportes Radio, Manuel Lapuente (who was let go as the coach of Puebla on Wednesday) made it clear that in the two periods in which he managed the Tri team, he never selected naturalized players "because there was no one of greater quality than the Mexicans that he was managing." However, he accepts that today it is necessary to do so.

Chaco maintains a lead in his creative work and his offensive dynamics compared to those individuals mentioned earlier. More importantly, he also has an ability to dissuade laziness and conformism on the field.
