Eder Luis joins Al-Nasr from Vasco

Dubai club Al-Nasr have completed a swoop for Eder Luis from Vasco da Gama as a replacement for the outgoing Bruno Correa.

Correa, who top scored in the league last season for Nasr with 16 goals, has been training with the club at their pre-season camp in Germany, but the club have been looking to replace him.

Nasr were linked to Al Ain´s Jires Kembo Ekoko and West Bromwich Albion´s Peter Odemwingie, but have plumped for Luis, 28.

"He will be coming to Dubai for his medicals and if he passes his fitness test, then we will finalise the deal," a club official said.

"He will be a really good addition to the squad. He is fast and can play with both feet. He can play on the wings as well as a second striker. So he gives you plenty of options on the pitch, plus the coach also recommended him."

£30m Too Much? For Willian It Was Really Nothing

Chelsea have beaten Liverpool and Tottenham to the signing of transfer listed Anzhi escapee Willian, as the player chose Stamford Bridge and the Champions League, over White Hart Lane and the Europe League. Willian will sign for the club next week once a work permit is secured.

Spurs were ready to break their transfer fee for a third time this window, as Paulinho and Roberto Soldado recently edged out big names such as Luka Modric and, erm, Darren Bent, in Spurs list of highest fees paid.

Liverpool were first amongst the bidding for the player, but reportedly declined to pay the massive fee commanded by Willian’s agent, Kia Joorabchian. When it comes to spending big money on football players, Liverpool have had their fingers burnt in the not so distant past, so the prospect signing of Willian for £30m was met with some concern by fans. The extra agents fees were also met with some concern by Liverpool’s owners FSG, so much so that they pulled out of the deal.

During his time at Shakhtar Donetsk, Willian proved his talents on a European stage, winning the UEFA Cup in 2009, and impressing in the Champions League for several seasons. This persuaded Anzhi Makhachkala to fork out £30m for his signature, and he’s maintained this value, as you can see.

In Willian, Chelsea are getting a player with a cutting edge in the final third, especially from the left wing slot where he can cut in dangerously onto his stronger right foot. He’s a tricky, pacey, creative player who likes to take on his man, as well as shoot from distance should the opportunity arise.

He’ll also be looking to improve even further as he looks to force his way into the Brazilian national team, and playing alongside his compatriots David Luiz, Oscar, and Ramires at Chelsea could attract the attention of coach Big Phil Scolari.

Superclásico Clausura 2013: Cerro Porteño win 100th clásico thanks to Romero show

Cerro Porteño vs Olimpia
Defensores del Chaco, Asunción
(2-0) 2-1 – Guillermo Beltrán, Angel Romero; Diego Centurión

https://www.youtube.com/…ctnAOM1f7jA

In the 279th league meeting between Paraguay’s two biggest sides it was Chiqui Arce’s Cerro Porteño who came out on top, an excellent first half display earning his first clásico win as a manager and the azulgrana´s 100th in the league. Ever Almeida will be disappointed with his team selection that backfired as the Romero twins constantly ran at his slow defence to devastating effect. The game was played in persistent rain and freezing temperatures that affected the crowd, just 18,795 people attended compared to 27,358 in 2012 and 26,196 in 2011.

Angel Romero was a real thorn in their side, winning fouls all over the final third and at no point was any defender comfortable facing him but it was his twin brother that brought about the first goal. A vicious left-footed strike from Oscar Romero in the driving rain through several bodies was well saved by Martin Silva who got his legs in the way, but the rebound fell straight to in-form Guillermo Beltrán who scored his 10th goal for Cerro, his first in the clásico.

On 25 minutes Carlos Humberto Paredes was taken off to be replaced by Dante López but the three central midfielders of Olimpia were suffering against the combination of Fidencio Oviedo and Julio Dos Santos who always looked comfortable and always had options, usually Mathias Corujo on the right-hand side. The Uruguayan had a wonderful game and on 43 minutes combined well with his full back, Carlos Bonet, to cross for Angel Romero. The youngster is a predator in the box and sniffed blood when he saw his marker wrong-footed – he raced towards the cross bringing it down perfectly with his first touch and smashing in with his second to give El Ciclón breathing space.

Almeida got it wrong from the start but he is an excellent coach, at halftime he made a double change taking off the creative players Alejandro Silva and Juan Manuel Salgueiro replacing them with the physical presence of Diego Centurión and the experience of Sergio Orteman. It worked, Orteman showed discipline and Cerro weren’t able to dominate central midfield. Centurión was a pest winning freekicks in the channels particularly on the left and by pulling off to that side he stemmed Bonet’s forays forward.

After 57 minutes Centurión pulled a goal back, his fourth against Cerro Porteño since 2012 (he scored three times for Guaraní against them last year) and on first glance he looked offside but replays show that Corujo was slow coming out, the Uruguayan´s only mistake all day. The pass over the top was from Wilson Pittoni who is so dangerous with any time on the ball in the final third – with Fernandez coming out of goal to close the angle Diego Centurión had to react quickly and rather than controlling the ball he flicked the ball into the net with the outside of his boot.

Despite an improved second half there wasn’t to be a second goal, in fact Cerro haven’t conceded two in a game this season so it was always going to be a tough ask for El Decano. Arce looked delighted with the win, it gives him some much-needed credit with the fans but more importantly it takes Cerro four points clear at the top of the table and all the pressure is now on Libertad who will try and juggle the Copa Sudamericana with a title challenge.

Vucetich sacked by Monterrey

Monterrey have parted ways Victor Vucetich, despite the manager guiding the team to three consecutive CONCACAF Champions League titles.

The 58-year-old has paid the price for a slow start to the Liga MX Apertura season, with the side taking just six points from their first seven matches.

Vucetich took charge of the Mexican outfit in 2009, and has also led the side to two domestic titles to go with their successes in the Champions League.

But a 3-1 defeat away to Leon on Saturday sealed his fate, with the club opting to take a new direction.

"We made the decision as an institution to have a change in coaching, and from this day Mr Victor Manuel Vucetich and his team no longer belong to our institution," club president Jose Gonzalez Ornelas said.

"There have been important achievements for our club but on the other hand the results we´ve had in the last three (domestic) tournaments have been below our expectations as a club."

Clubs in Mexico compete to achieve a place in the top eight, where they then go into a title play-off.

Monterrey were ousted in last season´s Apertura by Tijuana in the quarter-finals, and fell to America in the semi-finals of the Clausura.

Vitinho: Seedorf´s protege coming of age in Brazil

Name: Victor Vinicius Coelho Santos (Vitinho)
Age: 19
Club: Botafogo
Position: Attacking Midfield
Nationality: Brazilian

The 2013 Brasileirao season will certainly not be remembered as a vintage campaign in terms of overall quality, with the likes of Neymar, Bernard and Lucas Moura all having moved on since the end of last season. The financial reality of Brazilian football is much improved in recent years but, while players are now more inclined to stay longer in the country, the Brasileirao undoubtedly remains a selling league.

In hardship, though, Brazil continually pulls through to produce new stars and this season has certainly been no exception. There have been positive reviews for Santos youngsters Neilton and Gabriel Barbosa, Cruzeiro´s Vinicius Araujo has proven that he can perform at a decent level for the senior team, while Flamengo´s Nixon has shown promise and a good attitude. While there are several others that also deserve mention, there can be no doubting that it is Botafogo´s 19-year-old forward Vitinho who has led the way for young talent this campaign.

His rise to prominence has been rapid, having only featured twice at senior level before the start of the calendar year and has rarely featured at youth international level. While supporters of Botafogo have long since maintained that he was a top prospect, he was not considered to be anywhere near the country´s Under-20 squad for the South American championship this January -- overlooked in favour of several players from a younger age level. Indeed, many of those impressing in the league at present have been consistently overlooked with regards to youth national team selection.

While not being involved in the disaster that was the Under-20 championship may prove to be a blessing in disguise for Vitinho, his performances this campaign have now certainly catapulted his name to the forefront of supporters´ minds across Brazil. Botafogo have won the Rio de Janeiro state championship this year and are now flying high in the national championship. While Vitinho was only on the verge of the squad back in January, he has improved considerably over the course of the year, developing into an important figure within the Alvinegro ranks.

"He is widely regarded as the best ´newcomer´ in the league this season," Football Manager head researcher in Brazil, Paulo Freitas, explains. "He is a very talented attacking midfielder, with great technique and good speed off the mark.

"He needs, though, to improve his teamwork, as he can be too selfish at times. He tries to make things happen too much by himself, rather than passing the ball to a player in a better position."

While he has areas to improve in the coming months and years, then, Vitinho could not ask for a better role model than Botafogo team-mate Clarence Seedorf. The Dutchman has made himself a central figure both on-and-off the pitch at the Carioca club and, over recent weeks, would appear to have taken the youngster under his wing.

With plentiful support and his confidence running high, Vitinho´s recent form has been exceptional -- supposedly attracting the interest of Turkish giants Galatasaray. In seven league games in August, he has contributed three goals and three assists to the Bota cause, helping maintain the club´s league challenge. As a result, only Seedorf and centre-forward Rafael Marques have directly contributed to more goals for the side.

"Vitinho´s form in recent games has been impressive," Freitas continued. " He has been able to shine even when his mentor Seedorf has not been present, scoring decisive goals in both the Copa do Brasil and the league."

For the moment, the teenager must simply maintain his form and prove that he is more than just a simple flash in the pan. The Brazilian championship sees many a young talent impress for brief periods each season, but only a few are able to sustain their form and prove themselves ready to seize their chance. Vitinho has already shown that he can reach highs that most are unable to reach, but to sustain those levels is what separates the likes of Bernard -- the undisputed breakthrough star of 2012 -- from the many talents who fall by the wayside.

A move to Europe now would be far too early and, in truth, he could do worse than to follow the example of Bernard. Having impressed in the opening months of last campaign, the attacking midfielder rejected advances last year, stayed on for a further year at Atletico Mineiro and gained valuable Copa Libertadores experience ahead of a move to the Old Continent.

Vitinho will now have a similar task to prove he can handle the pressure that expectation brings and, without doubt, remaining at Botafogo and learning from the likes of Seedorf and Nicolas Lodeiro is the best choice he could make at present. A move abroad can be an enticing option but, having made an initial impression, he would be better served honing skills at senior level that will serve him well for the remainder of his career. He is, though, certainly a name to keep an eye on over coming seasons.
