Rodríguez: "El plantel está golpeado"

BUENOS AIRES -- El arquero de Independiente, Diego Rodríguez, reconoció el martes que el plantel quedó "golpeado" por el despido del entrenador Miguel Angel Brindisi y por los malos resultados en el comienzo de su tránsito por la B Nacional.

"El plantel está golpeado, pero sabiendo que tenemos que ponernos bien rápido", sostuvo el guardavallas, a quien Brindisi le devolvió la titularidad en el último partido, frente a Atlético Tucumán, el que llevó a la directiva a desplazar al técnico.

El arquero, responsable de que Independiente no haya perdido por una mayor diferencia al 2-1 final en Tucumán, hizo una autocrítica en nombre del equipo.

"Hemos cometido errores tácticos y sabemos que no hicimos buenos partidos", dijo y agregó: "Depende de nosotros sacar a Independiente ahora".

Y confió que "la gente va a acompañar".

LA PRÁCTICA DEL MARTES

Manuel Magán, Juan Cruz Anselmi, y Ariel Wiktor dispusieron de un trabajo físico y con pelota en el entrenamiento en Villa Domínico, y luego insistieron, en especial con los delanteros, en tareas para mejorar la definición.

Mientras la dirigencia espera cerrar la contratación del entrenador que reemplazará a Brindisi, Independiente espera sumar el sábado próximo su primer triunfo en la B Nacional cuando reciba a Independiente Rivadavia de Mendoza en el Libertadores de América.

Weaver brace boosts Houston Dynamo over Arabe Unido

HOUSTON -- Cam Weaver scored two goals, including the game-winner in the 76th minute, and goalkeeper Tally Hall made a pair of vital saves to spark the Houston Dynamo to a 2-1 victory over Arabe Unido in a CONCACAF Champions League match on Tuesday night.

The win boosted the Dynamo (1-1-0, 4 points) into the Group 1 lead with a September 25 meeting with DIRECTV W Connection (0-1-1, 1 point) at home looming. Arabe Unido (three), which fell to 1-0-1, visits the Trinidad & Tobago side on Sept. 19.

After Abdiel Arroyo’s penalty kick lifted the visitors to an early advantage at BBVA Compass Stadium, Weaver equalized with his first goal of the night in the 22nd minute.

U.S. international midfielder Brad Davis, who came on for Jason Johnson midway through the second half, created the game-winner as he floated a cross from the left flank into the penalty area. Weaver found some open space and headed it home from four yards.

Hall was at the top of his game for most of the night, denying Ward on a breakaway in the 15th minute and saving an attempt by second-half sub Orlando Rodriguez, who has eight career CCL goals, in the 82nd minute.

Referee Hugo Cruz of Costa Rica handed out eight yellow cards, four to each team.

The Panamanian side earned an opportunity to draw first blood, when Houston´s Michael Chabala committed a foul in the penalty area. Arroyo converted the subsequent spot kick in the eighth minute, placing his attempt into the lower right corner to give Arabe a 1-0 lead.

Just seconds after going ahead, Arabe Unido goalkeeper Miguel Lloyd was forced to deny Weaver from point-blank range.

Houston located the back of the net in the 22nd minute. Weaver found himself loosely marked with three defenders yards away and the forward converted a left-wing feed from an overlapping defender Corey Ashe from in-close to knot the game at 1-1.

The Dynamo has never lost to Arabe Unido in three all-time CCL games (2-1-0).

Weaver’s two-goal performance gives him five career goals in the competition, breaking the club record that he shared with Brian Ching, Stuart Holden and Kei Kamara.

Newell’s Old Boys show no signs of slowing down as they sweep aside Gimnasia

Last season’s Torneo Final Champions may have lost manager Tata Martino to Barcelona and main striker, Nacho Scocco to Brasil but Newell’s Old Boys showed once again why they are currently the best side in Argentina. Newly promoted, Gimnasia La Plata had won all 3 games before their trip to Rosario tonight but goals from Gabriel Heinze, Maxi Rodriguez and Rinaldo Cruzado ensured Newell’s finished the night back on top of the table and the question: Can anyone topple this Newell’s side?

Enjoying 73% possession and limiting Gimnasia to very little it seems Newell’s Old Boys under Alfredo Berti are going to be equally formidable this season.

Heinze headed home from a corner before the break and his presence back in the side could not be understated as his work in snuffing out any Gimnasia attacks was crucial. After the break, as the pressure mounted, it was only a matter of time before the lead was doubled. It was another of the reliable older faces that scored the goal, this time Maxi Rodriguez was on hand to tap in the rebound after Monetti was unable to hold the initial effort. With minutes remaining, two of the Newell’s second half substitutes combined to add a third. David Trezeguet cut the ball back to Rinaldo Cruzado, who at the second attempt slotted the ball into the corner.

It has still been a good opening month for Gimnasia but with this result Newell’s have made a statement to the rest of the contenders.

Ponte Preta advances to the next round after drawing with Criciúma

Brazil´s Ponte Preta advanced to the round of 16 Copa Sudamericana, the first international tournament played in their history, after getting a goalless draw against Criciuma at home.

Ponte Preta will now face either Colo Colo or Deportivo Pasto, who face each other on Wednesday at the Monumental in Santiago. The Chileans won 1-0 in the first leg in Colombia.

Ponte Preta defeated Criciúma 2-1 last week and came to the Moises Lucarelli stadium in Campinas with less pressure.

The game was the debut for coach Jorginho, who comes from Flamengo and replaces Paulo Cesar Carpegiani. He was fired from Flamengo for poor performances from the team in the Brazilian Championship, where they are in 17th position, in the relegation zone.

Last Saturday, at home, Ponte Preta lost 2-0 to leaders Cruzeiro.

But Jorginho and his boys got a smile from the fans with this historic classification in the Sudamericana.

Despite the advantage, Jorginho ordered an attack and in the opening minutes dominated the game against a Criciuma which did not get sorted in the field and crashed out of control into Ponte´s defenders who had crept forward.

Midfielder Fernando Bob led the attack, although there were individual errors and no real clear scoring chances.

The best chance of the match went to Criciúma right before the whistle with a corner that Leandro Moura, alone in the box, headed wide.

In the second half, Jorginho decided to go with defense and bet on the counter.

But both teams didn´t show much quality and lacked good football.

The celebration will be short for Ponte Preta as they must concentrate again on the local tournament, where this Saturday they meet Gremio, third in the table. Meanwhile Criciúma visit Vitoria in Salvador.

Universidad Católica of Chile overcame Emelec of Ecuador 3-2 (7-2 aggregate) on Wednesday and qualified for the round of 16 at the Copa Sudamericana.

The match was played in the George Capwell stadium in Guayaquil (southwest). The Chilean team got goals from Nicolas Castillo, 41 minutes, Fernando Cordero (62) and Matthew Jadue (75), while Emelec got a brace from Enner Valencia in the 64 and 71 minutes.

Universidad Católica, who had won 4-0 in the first leg, will face Sao Paulo in the next round, which will debut in the tournament they won last year after a controversial final against Argentina´s Tigre.

The group coached by Martin Lasarte found in the counterattack their best weapon, and sealed their passage to the next round of the tournament with goals and good football.

Emelec, meanwhile, squandered several chances to close the gap, and in the end allowed the Chileans to get comfortable on the pitch after they pressed at the start of the match.

The team led by Argentine-born coach Gustavo Quinteros searched tirelessly for the first goal, but its lack of definition gave life to Universidad Católica.

The Chileans took up roost in their box and withstood the early Ecuadorian onslaught. Their only option was to counterattack.

That´s how the first goal came that practically sealed the game before halftime.

Striker Nicolas Castillo opened the scoring with a header that ended up burying the aspirations of the Ecuadorians.

In the second half Cordero and Jadue scored, also on a counterattack, which confirmed the superiority of the visitors.

Emelec wilted under the Chileans and was never a serious threat in the game.

Valencia could only rescue the honor of the Ecuadorians with two goals at the end of the game.

El campeón colombiano, Atlético Nacional, clasificó a los octavos de final de la Copa Sudamericana-2013, tras empatar con Guaraní de Paraguay 0-0 en el partido de vuelta de la segunda fase disputado el martes en Medellín (noroeste). El cuadro colombiano se había impuesto 2-0 en el encuentro de ida jugado el pasado miércoles en Asunción.

El cuadro paraguayo salió a buscar el resultado frente a un deslucido conjunto ´verdolaga´, que cedió la iniciativa al rival.

Durante el primer tiempo, el juego se concentró en la mitad del campo, y las emociones estuvieron a cargo del equipo ´aborigen´, que creó varias situaciones de gol.

En la inicial, los locales apenas contabilizaron un remate de Juan David Valencia, que el arquero Alfredo Aguilar controló sin dificultad. En cambio, a los 27 minutos el zurdo Iván González conectó un remate de costado que se fue cerrando hasta golpear en el travesaño.

Enseguida, su compañero Derlis González hizo estirar al portero Franco Armani con un nuevo disparo, mientras que al 36 Miguel Paniagua remató en el área a las manos del cuidapalos. Cuando parecía que Guaraní había decaído en su juego, Rodrigo Teixeira quedó en clara posición de gol, pero Paniagua se atravesó y complicó la definición del experimentado atacante brasileño.

Y sobre el tiempo de adición, el defensa Julio Cáceres empalmó un cabezazo en el área, pero el volante Farid Díaz apareció milagrosamente para salvar en la línea de gol.

Guaraní mantuvo la iniciativa en la segunda parte, mientras que Atlético Nacional intentó bajar las revoluciones manejando el balón en la mitad de la cancha. Sin embargo, el plantel paraguayo volvió a arrebatarle el esférico y se aproximó a predios rivales, aunque sin peligro.

El técnico español Fernando Jubero puso entones toda la carne en el asador para remontar el resultado e ingresó a los delanteros Jorge Benítez y Federico Santander, sacrificando al creativo González.

Los ´verdolagas´ se medirán en octavos de final con el ganador de la llave entre los brasileños Portuguesa y Bahía, que se impuso en el partido de ida por 2-1 como visitante.

Coritiba avanzó este miércoles a los octavos de final de la Copa Sudamericana-2013, tras vencer por 4-3 en penales (1-1 en 120 minutos) a Vitoria en un duelo de porteros de estos clubes brasileños.

Julio Cesar abrió el marcador a los 46 para Coritiba que garantizó la decisión por penales. En la ida, disputada en el Barradao de Salvador, Vitoria venció por 1-0.

En la tanda de penales, Vitor Junior, Bill, Julio Cesar y Gil anotaron los cuatro de los locales. Arthur y Victor Ferraz fallaron. Por Vitoria, Fabricio, Luis Alberto y Marquinhos anotaron, mientras que los cobros de Maxi Biancucchi, Pedro Oldoni y Elizeu fueron defendidos por Vanderlei.

Gareca probó cinco cambios en Vélez

BUENOS AIRES -- El director técnico de Vélez Sarsfield, Ricardo Gareca, movió el martes el equipo en la práctica de fútbol y hará cinco modificaciones para recibir el jueves a Belgrano de Córdoba, en busca de revertir la desventaja 1-0 sufrida en el partido de ida.

Al no tener buenas actuaciones en el Torneo Inicial, Gareca decidió sacar del equipo a nombres importantes como Francisco Cerro, Federico Insúa y el colombiano Jonathan Copete, para tratar de regresar a la victoria y poder avanzar de fase.

Los que ingresarán serán los defensores Juan Sabia y Emiliano Papa, los volantes Héctor Canteros y Lucas Romero, y el delantero Ezequiel Rescaldani.

En tanto, saldrán, en relación con el empate sin goles frente a Lanús, Sebastián Domínguez (suspendido), Facundo Cardozo, Francisco Cerro, Insúa y Copete.

Tres cambios en Belgrano

CORDOBA -- El entrenador de Belgrano de Córdoba, Ricardo Zielinski, hará tres cambios en el equipo para visitar el jueves a Vélez Sarsfield en la revancha de la serie que definirá una plaza en los octavos de la Copa Sudamericana.

Con respecto al equipo que perdió frente a Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata 2-1, ingresarán los mediocampistas Sebastián Carrera y Esteban González, y el delantero Fernando Márquez.

En tanto, saldrán de la formación Facundo Affranchino, Jonathan Santana y Ezequiel Maggiolo, respectivamente.

De esta manera, Belgrano saldrá a jugar en Liniers con Juan José Olave; Pier Barrios, Lucas Aveldaño, Luciano Lollo, Sergio Rodríguez; Carrera, Guillermo Farré, González, Jorge Velázquez; Márquez y César Pereyra.

Ischia se siente "muy cerca" de Racing

BUENOS AIRES -- El extécnico de Boca Carlos Ischia quien junto a Claudio Borghi es uno de los dos candidatos que quedan en carrera para reemplazar a Zubeldía, reconoció esta listo para dirigir, ya que tiene "un equipo de trabajo armado". Hace unos días había desestimado la chance de ser entrenador de Independiente.

"Mi intuición me dice que estoy muy cerca de convertirme en el técnico de Racing. Hoy (martes) me llamó el director deportivo del club, Roberto Ayala, para convocarme a una reunión que vamos a mantener esta noche", anunció Ischia en diálogo con Télam.

"Tengo un equipo de trabajo armado y eso me permitiría empezar a dirigir inmediatamente, sin preocuparme por ese tema", anticipó quien fuera entrenador de Boca Juniors, con el que supo salir campeón local.

El círculo de elección para la dirigencia racinguista se redujo en las últimas horas al Bichi Borghi, quien se encuentra en Chile y coincidentemente también registra un pasado xeneize, y el ex ayudante de campo de Carlos Bianchi.

Las diferencias que juegan a favor de Ischia pasan por un costado económico, ya que Borghi, más allá de sus ganas de dirigir en un club del que es hincha, es considerado un técnico "caro".

De todas formas, el exentrenador del seleccionado trasandino, multicampeón con Colo Colo y ganador del último título en primera de Argentinos Juniors, todavía ocupa el primer lugar en la preferencia del presidente Gastón Cogorno y Ayala, en quien recae la responsabilidad de elegir al nuevo técnico.

Cogorno y Ayala iban a viajar a Chile este martes mismo, pero eso quedó postergado y por ello Ayala aprovechará para reunirse con Ischia. Otro de los candidatos del `Ratón` que finalmente quedó rezagado es Roberto Sensini, con quien el director deportivo compartió equipo en el seleccionado argentino.
