Liga MX Apertura 2012 Team by Team Analysis – Club Leon

The year 2012 will be one of dear history for Club Leon. Being one of Mexico’s most historical and successful teams, Leon was relegated to the Liga de Ascenso in 2002. Ever since, they fought furiously to get back to the first division but for many years without glory. In they lost five finals (three league finals and two direct promotion) finals in the ten years before returning to the first division in 2012. Leon is a historical team with one of Mexico’s best fans which will once again get the chance to play first division soccer.

The team that won its promotion was led by Colombian winger Hernan Burbano and Uruguayan forward Sebastian Maz. For the Apertura 2012 of the new Liga MX, Leon will still try to win games under these two offensive players. Although the base of the team from the second division is still intact, Leon was one of the teams that made the most transfers in the off-season. The major signings they made were of defenders Jonny Magallon and Javier Mustafa and midfielder Edgar Pacheco.

Leon is a team that is newly promoted but their squad is filled with first division talent. This is a team that will be well-prepared for the Liga MX challenge, and they already have demonstrated this by being undefeated in the preseason, including a game against Mexico’s Olympic team. Leon will start in last place of the relegation fight with a percentage of 0.00 but this team is talented enough to survive and possibly fight for bigger things—similar to what Xolos of Tijuana did last year by passing to the playoffs in their first year in the first division.

Liga MX Apertura 2012 Team by Team Analysis – Jaguares

The Clausura 2012 for Jaguares was a good season that led them to the playoffs as the eight seed. Chiapas has been a mid-table squad for several seasons, and in the Clausura they had a fair offense with 26 goals and a good defense that took 20 goals but which also only lost three matches. The success of Jaguares was greatly do to the offensive threat of Colombian-trio Jackson Martinez, Luis Gabriel Rey, and Franco Arizala.

Several changes were made by coach Jose Guadalupe Cruz prior to the new Liga MX. Although the base of the team was left intact, striker Jackson Martinez is following fellow Colombian Radamel Falcao’s steps by transferring to FC Porto of Portugal. With this move Jaguares obtained a hefty sum of money as it is said the transfer was around $10 million, however they also lost the best player in the team and one of the best in the Liga MX. To fulfill that spot, Chiapas signed the young nineteen year old Colombian Drogba, Jhon Cordoba, however Jaguares may prefer the more experienced duo of Luis Gabriel Rey and Franco Arizala to lead the attack.

Jaguares has the potential to repeat into the playoffs if their defense is strong, especially with the incorporation of defender Leiton Martinez, however, with the recent injury of Edgar Andrade and the poor experience of Jackson Martinez’s sub—Cordoba—this team will have a difficult time winning games. They have a fair squad but the big name teams of the Liga MX are well prepared for this tournament therefore playoffs are not in the trajectory of this team.

Coach: Jose Guadalupe Cruz

Players In: Jhon Cordoba, Elgabry Rangel, Leiton Jimenez, Jose Carlos Castillo, Mariano Trujillo

Players Out: Jackson Martinez, Jorge Hernandez

Players to Watch: Edgar Andrade, Leiton Jimenez, Jhon Cordoba

Prospect Players: Jhon Cordoba

Liga MX Apertura 2012 Team by Team Analysis – Chivas de Guadalajara

Chivas had one of its best regular seasons when it obtained first place of regular season standings in the Apertura 2011 but then had a season to forget in the Clausura 2012. With a lack of reinforcements, all the pressure was put on the young players, many who have not even reached the age of 20 as is the case with Erick Torres, Jesus Sanchez, and Carlos Fierro. With no real experience in the offense, Chivas lacked major offensive productivity having one of the league’s worst offenses with only 12 goals while receiving a decent 21. This led them to make fifteen points while finishing in a poor 15th place; terrible for North America’s most popular team.

Entering the Apertura 2012 of the new Liga MX, Chivas owner Jorge Vergara changed the direction of the team by signing a group led by soccer legend Johann Cruyff who will attempt to lead this team to victory with the same managerial ideology he led FC Barcelona, and Ajax in the past. Cruyff’s first change was signing Holland’s John Van’t Schip as the team’s new coach. Moreover, adding new experienced players was a big goal for the preseason, and after going after stars like Aldo De Nigris, Gerardo Lugo, or Javier Orozco, they signed midfielder Luis Perez and striker Rafael Marquez Lugo.

Guadalajara is a team that has the ability to play for a title. However, it is also a very young team with many up-and-downs which is why they are not repeatedly in the playoffs. Chivas lost defender Jhonny Magallon to Leon, and forward Alberto Medina to Pachuca, meaning they still depend on the ability of their young players once again. This team will be led by a veteran player in each line; Luis Michel in the goal, Hector Reynoso in the defense, Luis Perez in the midfield, and Rafael Marquez Lugo in the offense. Balance and offensive productivity are factors Van’t Schip will focus on, but do not aim your hopes too high as this team will have a hard time reaching the playoffs after most of Mexico’s big name teams added more and better player additions to their corresponding squads.

Coach: John Van’t Schip

Players In: Rafael Marquez Lugo, Luis Perez, Liborio Sanchez

Players Out: Alberto Medina, Edgar Mejia, Jhonny Magallon, Dionicio Escalante, Jorge Mora

Players to Watch: Luis Perez, Rafael Marquez Lugo, Marco Fabian

Prospect Players: Marco Fabian, Erick Torres, Carlos Fierro

Liga MX Apertura 2012 Team by Team Analysis – Club America

In the Clausura 2012, Club America ended 3rd in the regular season standings with 32 points behind Santos Laguna and Monterrey. In the playoffs they reached the semifinals and were defeated against runner-ups Monterrey creating a sentiment of disappointment amongst loyal fans and critics. Their best player was undoubtedly Christian Benitez who led the league with 14 goals.

For the Apertura 2012 of the new Liga MX, the popular America squad will come in as one of the strongest and favorites to win the title. During the offseason, they had the three significant signings of Efrain Juarez, Adrian Aldrete, and Rubens Sambueza. With these, coach Miguel Herrera will maintain the majority of the players who reached the semifinals in the Clausura 2012 while strengthening its left and right midfield with Aldrete and Juarez.

America is a strong squad that does not have a strong substitute for Chucho Benitez, but keeping most of its starting lineup intact is a new characteristic of a team used to recycling players. See the team from Coapa to be a strong contender while gaining enough points to be top four in the standings.

Coach: Miguel Herrera

Players In: Adrian Aldrete, Efrain Juarez , Rubens Sambueza

Players Out: Vicente Matias Vuoso, Oscar Viscarrondo, Oscar Rojas, Daniel Marquez

Players to Watch: Christian Benitez, Efrain Juarez

Prospect Players: Raul Jimenez, Diego Reyes

Liga MX Apertura 2012 Team by Team Analysis – Club Atlas

In the Clausura 2012, Atlas had the second best defense of the tournament behind Xolos of Tijuana with only 13 goals against. However, they also had one of the worst offenses in the history of the league with only 7 goals. Atlas ended the league in a surprising 10th place, 7 points away from a playoff position and enough points from demotion.

Although saved from demotion in the Clausura 2012, they will begin the Liga MX Apertura 2012 in second to last place just above newly promoted Leon in the demotion percentage with a mere 1.000 rating. Atlas will need to focus early on attaining points which can be done if their defense is as strong as it was last season. Their defense was left intact with only the departure of right winger Arturo Paganoni leaving to Toluca. Most importantly, the Atlas administration focused this offseason on strengthening their poor offense by signing goal poacher Hector Mancilla, Vicente Matias Vuoso, and Luis Alonso Sandoval.

Atlas is a well coached staff that had great player arrivals since the Mexican league player draft. They will be a very difficult team to beat with its strong defense, a good offense led by Hector Mancilla, and a good mixture between experienced and young players. This team will be a playoff contender and it will be hard to imagine that they will be in last place of the demotion table once the Aperura 2012 ends.

Coach: Juan Carlos Chavez

Players In: Hector Mancilla, Luis Alonso Sandoval, Vicente Matias Vuoso, Sergio Amaury Ponce, Christian Sanchez, Luis Bolaños

Players Out: Jorge Villalpando, Francisco Torres, Alonso Zamora, Arturo Paganoni, Giancarlo Maldonado

Players to Watch: Hector Mancilla, Leandro Cufre

Prospect Players: Hugo Isaac Rodriguez, Ricardo Bocanegra

Possible Lineup: Miguel Pinto, Hugo Isaac Rodriguez, Leandro Cufre, Sergio Amaury Ponce, Facundo Erpen, Lucas Ayala, Luis Bolaños, Flavio Santos, Luis Alonso Sandoval, Vicente Matias Vuoso, Hector Mancilla

Liga MX Apertura 2012 Team by Team Analysis – Atlante

In the Clausura 2012, Atlante ended 14th in the regular season standings with 16 points well behind the teams in playoff positions. With consecutive bad seasons Atlante has pushed itself deep into demotion trouble as they are now in 14th place with a 1.1471 percentage only above Puebla, Queretaro, Atlas, and newly promoted Leon.

Atlante’s greatest player addition to prepare for the Apertura 2012 of the new Liga MX was that of Chilean striker Esteban Paredes who played in Colo Colo. Atlante had a decent offense with 20 goals therefore Paredes will add more to that line, however, its defense was the worst with 31 goals against while no major addition was signed to aid that part of the team.

Atlante is a regular team that will fight to be mid-table under newly signed coach Ricardo Antonio La Volpe. This team has a defense that if La Volpe cannot control will lose many matches and push itself further into the demotion fight.

Coach: Ricardo Antonio La Volpe

Players In: Jorge Villalpando, Esteban Paredes, Israel Martinez, Ignacio Torres

Players Out: Mario Ortiz, Alex Diego, Hebert Alferez, Armando Navarrete, Andres Mendoza, Sonny Guadarrama

Players to Watch: Esteban Paredes

Prospect Players: Jeronimo Amione

Kenny Dalglish had scouted the young star at Bordeaux, and requested the chairman Jack Walker to begin discussions with the player’s club. He refused, and famously said, “Why do you want to sign Zinedine Zidane when we have Tim Sherwood?”
