Saturday: Estudiantes show worth in draw with Newells and Racing lose again

Newell’s Old Boys were unable to see off an impressive Estudiantes side yesterday afternoon and despite being the better side for large parts Estudiantes were god value for the draw. Pablo Perez’s second half header looked to have given Newell’s another victory but a last minute Leandro Desabarto header ensured the points were shared.

Liga MX Wrap: Morelia go top, Leon keep pressure on

Morelia bounced back from their second defeat of the season with a comprehensive 4-1 win over Pachuca to go top on Saturday.

The Liga MX table-toppers, who were beaten by the in-form America 3-1 last week but have replaced them at the summit now, raced out of the blocks to secure a three-goal lead within the opening 19 minutes.

Enrique Perez put the hosts ahead after nine minutes, with Hector Mancilla and Jose Cardenas completing the early blitz.

Pachuca, now winless in nine matches in all competitions, reduced the deficit on the stroke of half-time through Duvier Riascos, but Edgar Andrade´s effort put the game beyond reach midway through the second half.

Leon refused to give Carlos Bustos´ men any breathing space at the top, though, picking up a 2-0 win on the road against Santos Laguna.

Mauro Boselli netted his fifth goal of the campaign five minutes before the break and Matias Britos´ late strike extended Leon´s unbeaten start, which now stretches to eight matches.

Cruz Azul, who would have stayed joint top with a win, lost ground as they were beaten 2-0 at home by Queretaro.

The visitors, who have now kept three clean sheets on the bounce, led through Esteban Paredes´ early penalty and Luis Lorona wrapped up the points before the interval.

Cristian Martinez Borja´s last-gasp goal spared Leiton Jimenez´s blushes as Veracruz drew 1-1 with Tigres UANL.

Jimenez´s own goal had threatened to condemn Veracruz to a second consecutive defeat until Martinez levelled matters in the last minute.

On Sunday, Monterrey and Atlas each had a man sent off as they shared a goalless draw.

Severo Meza was given his marching orders for the hosts after an hour, but Facundo Adrian´s dismissal for Atlas evened things out 17 minutes later.

It is the fifth time that the visitors have drawn this season and they remain without a win in Liga MX.

Chiapas´ eventful campaign continued as they came from behind to beat Tijuana 3-1 at home, with both sides finishing with 10 men.

The hosts´ eight games this season have seen 28 goals, six of which have come in the last five minutes, with four coming from the penalty spot.

There was drama from the off against Tijuana, Javier Gandolfi seeing red after three minutes before the 10-man visitors took the lead through Javier Guemez.

Lucas Viatri drew the home side level after 43 minutes and Mauricio Romero put them ahead midway through the second half before being dismissed himself.

But in the dying moments, Martin Zuniga added the third.
