Copa Sudamericana: River Plate 0 San Lorenzo 0 (1-0 agg)

River Plate have advanced to the Copa Sudamericana round-of-16 with a 1-0 aggregate win over fellow Argentine club San Lorenzo.

After a 1-0 win at San Lorenzo a fortnight ago, River Plate started the second leg at their Estadio Antonio Vespucio Liberti in the box seat to win the two-legged tie but had to fight hard to secure a scoreless draw and an aggregate triumph.

San Lorenzo hit the woodwork twice and saw Martin Cauteruccio head the ball over the bar from point-blank range in the second half, although River also wasted opportunities to clinch victory late on.

The visitors´ best chance to score came three minutes after half-time when Leandro Navarro´s free-kick was parried onto the bar by River goalkeeper Marcelo Barovero, with the ball bouncing down and out without crossing the line.

With six minutes remaining, San Lorenzo hit the post again with a header before River conceded a corner kick.

From the resulting corner, Cauteruccio got free while standing at the back post but headed the ball over the bar when it would have been easier to score.

Just three minutes later and River´s central defender Eder Alvarez shot over the bar after an overlapping run down the left, while in second-half stoppage time, Manuel Lanzini burst forward on the counter-attack for the home team, threaded the ball to Osmar Ferreyra but the latter´s strike was saved by San Lorenzo´s Sebastian Torrico.

Despite those missed chances, River held on for the aggregate win to set up a last-16 clash with Ecuador´s LDU Loja.

San Lorenzo finished the game with 10 players on the field after Pablo Alvarado was sent off in the 90th minute.

De Felippe defendió a Montenegro

BUENOS AIRES -- El entrenador Omar De Felippe les dijo a los hinchas que insultaron a Daniel Montenegro que no pueden esperar que un jugador "salve" a Independiente, estando aún el equipo en búsqueda de su primer triunfo en el Torneo de la Primera B Nacional.

"Los diferentes como Montenegro son un plus, nunca hay que darle la responsabilidad a un solo jugador porque el rival no lo deja jugar y se acaban tus argumentos", afirmó.

"Hoy por hoy, Montenegro no está en su plenitud, ni pasando su mejor momento, pero no podemos esperar que alguien nos salve. Cada uno tiene un rol que cumplir y el funcionamiento debe ser sostenido por el conjunto", declaró el técnico.

Además, manifestó en una conferencia que brindó al término de la práctica que "si la prensa dice que se juega mal, no hay que esconderse porque esa es la única verdad, más allá de la realidad, que es lo que ocurre en la cancha".

Independiente viene de empatar sin goles con su homónimo mendocino en Avellaneda, donde el público repudió la actuación de los futbolistas por primera vez en el campeonato, y se prepara para visitar a Huracán el próximo lunes, por la sexta fecha.

"Necesitamos ganar así como necesitamos jugar bien para contagiar al hincha. Cuando un equipo no transmite ningún mensaje, el que está afuera, reprueba. Yo soy hincha de fútbol, me gusta ver partidos y por eso sé que no debemos ponernos mal sino brindar lo mejor, ir con todo a buscar la victoria", concluyó.

"A veces no te alcanza"

BUENOS AIRES -- El entrenador de San Lorenzo, Juan Antonio Pizzi, afirmó que, pese a la eliminación, su equipo tuvo "más intención y situaciones" que River Plate para clasificar a los octavos de final de la Copa Sudamericana.

"Estamos tristes por haber quedado eliminado, nos da mucha bronca, pero estamos tranquilos por la forma. Es más fácil levantarse de una eliminación cuando demostras los argumentos que demostramos nosotros", comentó el director técnico en rueda de prensa.

Y agregó: "Tuvimos más intención y situaciones que el rival para pasar. No pudimos hacer un gol. Hubo un equipo que se paró defensivamente a impedir solo que nosotros hagamos un gol".

"En el primer partido no tuvimos las chances claras que tuvimos hoy, con dos pelotas en los palos, pero no pudimos hacer un gol. Pero ya está", señaló el entrenador.

Pizzi criticó además la abundante agua que tenía el campo de juego al comienzo del partido.

"Fue innecesario lo que hicieron de regar tanto la cancha para condicionar un partido. Me pareció mal porque perjudicó a los dos equipos", dijo el conductor azulgrana.

"A veces en el fútbol haces casi todo bien y no te alcanza para ganar", concluyó el director técnico.

"River fue un justo ganador"

BUENOS AIRES -- El director técnico de River Plate, Ramón Díaz, afirmó que su equipo sabe cómo jugar una copa internacional y aseguró que fue justa la clasificación a los octavos de final de la Copa Sudamericana al eliminar a San Lorenzo.

"Sabemos cómo jugar la Copa y River fue un justo ganador. Fuimos superiores y demostramos que el equipo tiene carácter. Le metimos mucha presión y sabíamos que se iba a dar un partido duro e intenso", dijo el riojano en conferencia de prensa.

Y continuó: "Los partidos de Copa se juegan en 180 minutos y no en 90. Dimos un paso importantísimo y por eso el grupo lo festejó mucho".

"Es importante este triunfo en lo anímico, pero seguramente cuando vuelvan todos los jugadores vamos a armar un equipo que a todos le va a gustar", resaltó el entrenador.

"Quiero agradecerle a la gente también porque apoyó en todo momento y dejó la política de lado. Me encantó mucho eso", finalizó el técnico.

El arquero de River Plate, Marcelo Barovero, resaltó la clasificación que consiguió su equipo a los octavos de final de la Copa Sudamericana sobre San Lorenzo.

"La Copa es así, se define por cosas mínimas y pasamos. Después de la derrota del domingo sabíamos que teníamos que mejorar y pudimos clasificar", expresó Barovero, la figura de River en el empate contra el "Ciclón".

Y agregó: "La institución requiere que hay que estar en los primeros puestos, no tuvimos el mejor mes de arranque y es importante pasar. Esperemos que las cosas mejoren".

"Tratamos de solucionar varias cosas y ojalá que el próximo domingo (ante Tigre) continuemos por esta vía", finalizó el guardavalla.

Domestic dilemma

Javier Hernandez may be sacrificed given his lack of playing time recently.
A simple formula for many coaches around the world is to roll out a roster that wins, then keep the same players written into the starting lineup for as long as they keep winning. Obviously, that technique isn´t quite as basic on the international level, where teams do not play together for months at a time, but a variation on that approach is common for many teams.

Mexico´s coach, Jose Manuel "Chepo" de la Torre, may be swayed from putting out a starting eleven identical to the one that earned El Tri a confidence-boosting win versus the Ivory Coast in their latest match. Though those players performed well, there´s often the idea that a European player, even one whose typical role is on the bench, has a right to a starting spot over a domestic league player.

Whether or not one agrees with that opinion, it´s De la Torre´s responsibility to make that call, and he has consistently given Andres Guardado, Javier Hernandez, Diego Reyes and Giovani dos Santos the green light as starters. If it´s assumed that those four are starters and Jesus Corona is in goal, then the other spots left don´t allow for everyone who contributed to the Ivory Coast win to start.

The controversy about whether striker Oribe Peralta should start over Hernandez aside, it´s actually a great problem for Mexico to have. Earlier in the year, it seemed as if no one was going to help Hernandez with the scoring load, so now to have someone doing well enough to compete for his starting spot is a big improvement. It´s also a big relief given that Hernandez is recovering from injury and is probably not fully fit to go for 90 minutes due to a lack of playing time.

Mexico´s famous 12th man is supposed to be Azteca Stadium itself. Even now, some pundits in Mexico have vowed that if the stadium is completely full, El Tri will win. They seem to fail to grasp that Azteca´s secret advantage historically was probably that the local players had a greater level of comfort playing in the altitude of the location. It´s an especially dangerous trap for players to assume that just walking into a crowded stadium will intimidate Honduras into losing.

When the teams last met in Hex qualifying, Honduras fought back from two goals down to tie the match, so this is not a squad that will do anything but scrap to the very end.

Having seen the USA, Costa Rica and even lowly Jamaica walk out of Azteca this year with points, Honduras will be looking for the same for themselves. The Catrachos have never beaten Mexico in Azteca, but then again, Mexico has never earned as many draws as the squad has under De la Torre, so there is always a first time for everything.

One key player for Mexico will likely be Christian ´Chaco´ Gimenez. The veteran midfielder did the small, but vital things well in the match against the Ivory Coast. For all the fuss about naturalized players, Gimenez isn´t some amazing hired gun. He´s a good player, though, and a consummate pro. If the microscope placed on players like him isn´t too suffocating, he can make a crucial contribution.

Honduras seems to be playing up the clenbuterol issue with goalkeeper Corona partly as a distraction. What better player to hound and perhaps cause to lose focus than the netminder?

Off-the-field elements aside, Honduras probably will threaten Mexico from a defensive stance, relying on counter chances created by a lone striker, likely Carlos Costly.

Only a single point separates the two teams in the Hex, and while Honduras would be happy to share another point via a tie, Mexico badly needs the slight breathing room of the full three points.

So two out of the three possible results of win, lose or draw would make Honduras content, but El Tri can only be satisfied with one. Despite most factors lining up in Mexico´s favor for a win, overall, Honduras has to like those odds.
