Costa Rica Primera Division Wrap: Cartagines stalk leaders Saprissa

Cartagines have kept in touch with Costa Rican Primera Division leaders Deportivo Saprissa with a 2-0 win over Limon.

Erick Scott and Paulo Jimenez scored the goals for Cartagines, as they extended their unbeaten streak in the league to five games and moved above Puntarenas into third position.

The win takes Cartagines to nine points from five games, four points behind Saprissa, while second-placed Herediano are on 10.

Cartagines opened the scoring just before the hour mark on Wednesday when Scott collected a deflected shot and lifted the ball over Limon´s goalkeeper Roman Arrieta.

The home side had to wait until the 92nd minute to double their lead with Jimenez lashing a half-volley in off the underside of the bar from the edge of the penalty area.

Herediano stayed ahead of Cartagines with a 1-0 win over Belen Siglo XXI, while Alajuelense moved into fifth on goal difference with a 2-1 triumph over Uruguay.

Japan put in a dominant second-half display in Osaka on Friday to secure a 3-0 friendly win against Guatemala.

Alberto Zaccheroni´s side struck three times after the break, with goals from Keisuke Honda, Masato Kudo and Yasuhito Endo wrapping up the win.

The hosts named a strong side which included Shinji Kagawa and Makoto Hasebe, with the Milan-bound Honda starting from the bench.

Zaccheroni had urged his side to work well as a unit in the friendly fixture and he will have been pleased to see his side make much of the early running.

Maya Yoshida had the best of Japan´s opening chances, heading a deep corner from the left narrowly over after 19 minutes.

Atsuto Uchida then had a glorious opportunity to put his side ahead after 39 minutes.

However, the Schalke defender blazed over after Christian Alvarez spilled a cross in the area.

Five minutes after the break, Japan had their lead, when Honda, introduced at the break, headed home a Yuto Nagatomo cross from the left.

After 69 minutes, Japan were 2-0 up with through Kudo.

Hasebe split the visitors´ defence in two allowing Kagawa to play in Kudo who bundled the ball in from close range.

Endo made it three with 14 minutes to go, curling home a free-kick thanks to a deflection off the Guatemala wall - giving Zaccheroni´s men a boost going into their friendly with Ghana on Tuesday.

BUENOS AIRES -- El delantero de Boca Nicolás Blandi se recuperó de una contractura muscular y jugó este viernes por la mañana para el equipo titular, en lugar de Emmanuel Gigliotti, durante la práctica realizada en el predio de Casa Amarilla.

El delantero, que integró el equipo inicial en las cinco primeras fechas del torneo, había trabajado diferenciado durante toda la semana por una molestia en el aductor izquierdo.

En el ensayo futbolístico del jueves, el DT Carlos Bianchi recurrió a Gigliotti, que lo reemplazó en el entretiempo del partido pasado con Vélez (2-1), el domingo en "La Bombonera".

Blandi no evidenció este viernes secuelas de la molestia y recuperó su lugar entre los titulares, entre los que el entrenador ubicó a Guillermo Burdisso como segundo zaguero y al uruguayo Ribair Rodríguez como doble cinco.

El partido se jugará en el estadio "Roberto Carminatti" desde las 21.15, con el arbitraje de Juan Pablo Pompei.

International Friendly: South Korea 4 Haiti 1

Hong Myung-Bo secured his first win as South Korea boss with a 4-1 victory over 10-man Haiti in Incheon on Friday.

The South Koreans were unsuccessful at the East Asian Cup in July, scoring just one goal in their three games, and also slumped to a 0-0 draw at home to Peru last month.

However, they finally found their goalscoring touch at Sungui Arena Park, as Bayer Leverkusen forward Son Heung-Min struck twice, with Koo Ja-Cheol and Lee Keun-Ho each finding the net from the penalty spot.

It was not all plain sailing, however, with Kervens Belfort striking late in the first half to send the teams in level at the break.

Hong chose a relatively inexperienced starting XI, with the experienced trio of Lee Chung-Yong, Kwak Tae-Hwi and Koo left on the bench, while goalkeeper Kim Seung-Gyu was handed just his second international cap.

Son got his side off to a good start as he found the net with a superb effort from outside the area after 21 minutes, but the jitters set in as a defensive lapse left Belfort free in the area to slot home an equaliser.

Koo put the hosts back ahead from 12 yards after Lee Chung-Yong was fouled in the area just five minutes into the second half.

Things got worse for the visitors five minutes later as Yves Desmartes was dismissed for his second booking, before Bolton winger Lee Chung-Yong was again felled in the box and Lee Keun-Ho converted from the spot.

Son had the final say 17 minutes from time to lift some of the pressure off Hong ahead of their friendly clash with European side Croatia on Tuesday.
