FIFA World Cup Qualifying Preview: Costa Rica out to extend lead, USA host Mexico

Costa Rica will aim to take another step towards FIFA World Cup qualification with a win over Jamaica on Tuesday.

Jorge Luis Pinto´s side moved to the top of the CONCACAF qualifying section with an impressive 3-1 victory at home to the United States on Friday, ending the visitors´ 12-game winning streak in all competitions.

This result put them one point cleat of Jurgen Klinsmann´s men, and they will now turn their attention to Kingston, where they will face bottom-placed Jamaica - a team that are on a winless run of nine games.

Winfried Schafer´s side have scored just two goals in that sequence, and they they face an uphill struggle against a buoyant Costa Rican outfit who have lost just once so far in qualifying.

Elsewhere, the United States will look to get over the disappointment of defeat in San Jose when they welcome Mexico to Columbus for a match that sees second take on fourth.

Klinsmann´s side are currrently five points ahead of their visitors, who suffered a shock 2-1 defeat at home to Honduras on Friday.

That result was only the second time Mexico had tasted defeat in a World Cup qualifier at the Azteca Stadium, and was enough to convince the Mexican Football Federation to sack coach Jose Manuel de la Torre.

Meanwhile, Honduras will be looking to build on that victory when they take on Panama at the Estadio Tiburcio Carias Andino on Wednesday.

But they will have to make sure they contain Panama striker Blas Perez, who is set to return for the visitors after serving a suspension.

The FC Dallas forward has found the net on 10 occasions so far in this campaign and was sorely missed on Saturday as Panama were held 0-0 by Jamaica.

Partido De La Costa Mayor To Students: ‘I Come To Deliver These Cocks’

Partido de la Costa mayor Juan Pablo de Jesús was giving a speech during a ceremony at a San Bernardo school when he suddenly misspoke and made the national headlines. The Kirchnerite official was there to deliver some netbook computers to students as part of the National Government’s Conectar Igualdad program when he suddenly said:

“I come to deliver these cocks…”

Parents and students began giggling, but De Jesús just kept going as if nothing had happened. His intention was to obviously say “netbooks” but for reasons we may never understand he said “vergas” (cocks) instead. La Razón blames the hilarious confusion on “nerves or inexperience” but I disagree. I think:

A) He was either thinking about penises, and there’s nothing wrong with that.

B) Or he was being a cynic and actually referring to the laptop computers as “vergas,” which is possible since in Argentina when you want to refer to something that’s is bad quality you can call it a “verga.”

I don’t know what the hell is going on with Latin American politicians and their deep, underlying obsession with dick. I mean, it was only last week that Venezuelan president said “penises” instead of “fish”. But that’s kind of understandable since “peces” and “penes” are two similar words.

But from “netbooks” to “vergas“? That’s quite a stretch, man.

That’s quite a stretch.

In the kingdom of the blind, the one-eyed man is king!

Uruguay’s 2-1 win over Perú was the confirmation that, Uruguay’s “Garrá Charrúa” is alive and well. In 2012 that wasn’t the case, watching this team play in WCQ matches was laborious and downright harmful for your eyes. While Uruguay was flat-lining one man kept insisting all was not lost, that the plan to play with a default squad was the only way to forge forward. That man was Uruguay’s NT manager: Óscar Washington Tabárez.

This win over Perú combined with the Venezuela match played out in June were and are the defining moments of this qualifier campaign. This win however stands apart, it’s not easy going into Lima and coming back with more than 1 point. Perú knows how to play Uruguay and Brazil – these two teams have not done well in Lima in qualification, and the simple reason is Perú gets up for these matches. Perú though right now is at the point Uruguay were before Tabárez took charge of the NT, they have interesting players, but it’ll require more time – a luxury they don’t have at the moment – to qualify Perú to a World Cup, the question is will they allow Markarian to carry out the project through the end?

Backing a project, believing in a project requires faith. Not all associations can do that. When La AUF gambled on Tabárez it knew full well what it was getting into. Tabárez is convinced of his own ideas and doesn’t care what anyone else thinks. OWT’s philosophy is not for everyone. Certainly not for Uruguay’s press who cowards at the risk of his fire and brimstone responses, certainly not for the fare-weathered fan who is convinced a black cloud continually shadows Uruguay at every turn. But with Tabárez what you see is what you get, and what you get is an idea.

Tabárez gambled on an idea, an idea which I still don’t know will pay dividends come October. An idea which excludes player options which in my humble opinion can’t be excluded but an idea that insists that cagey veteran experience is an asset you can’t discard in do or die situations. Yet last year that plan went all to shit, the losses to Colombia, Argentina and Bolivia were humiliating and proof that the whole “Equipo De Memoria” experiment was built on quicksand not concrete. But the germ of the idea survived September, survived a friendly which Spain won, made it to June where Uruguay were able to win their first away match against Venezuela something which hadn’t happened since the mid-90′s in qualification.

Besides the default squad, other ideas survived, playing Cavani on the wing as a sort of deep-buried winger-cum pseudo spare right back. Insisting that Forlán/Lugano and Pérez are not done, that there’s still a little bit of juice left to squeeze out of them.

The Confederations Cup tournament helped Uruguay straightened itself out, in it; Cavani finally figured out how to play within the parameters this team sets for itself… sure there are still head scratching inclusions such as Juan Castillo, still for the life of me, I can’t see what Tabárez sees in Álvaro González… But the Perú game finally revealed the Equipo De Memoria can win you a hard fought contest.

Will Uruguay make it? I don’t know, things sure look a lot better now than they did last year. Uruguay is now 5th overall in the standings, there’s now an added hope that maybe direct qualification is possible. Something we all thought would happen when the Qualifiers kicked off and Suárez nuked Chile but hey these qualifiers unlike the European and Asian Qualifiers are extremely difficult. You not only have to play against teams but against extreme weather elements such as Barranquilla’s heat, and external elements permitted by CONMEBOL such as the extreme high altitude of La Páz and Quito. Hostile fans who shower you with rocks, gargajos and eggs. Referees who always give Brazil and Argentina the benefit of the doubt and one last factor… Uruguay’s location. Flying to Uruguay is not an easy proposition and then going to different venues for away matches is not smooth sailing either. And this has to be considered into the equation since CONMEBOL switched to everyone-plays-everyone format.

Tabárez forged forward, got crabbier as the results got more lop-sided, offered zero innovations unless you think Lodeiro is an innovation and flirted with the possibility of change only to pull the rug from right under us. His idea survived, this team will either go to the World Cup or die trying. What was unknown last year was whether this team had any fight left in them. This has been answered twice in the last 3 months. We still don’t know if Uruguay is going to Brazil but we do know now, that Uruguay will fight tooth and nail to get in.
