Paraguay Division Profesional Wrap: Gonzalez, Ocampo braces see Guarani rout Olimpia

Derlis Gonzalez and Ramon Ocampo have both notched braces as Guarani thrashed Olimpia 5-0 away in the Paraguay Division Profesional.

Gaurani claimed their first win in seven games in all competitions, with three goals in the second half ending Olimpia´s resistance at the Estadio Manuel Ferreira on Sunday.

The win took Guarani above Olimpia into eighth on the Paraguayan top-flight table on seven points; 10 adrift of league leaders Cerro Porteno.

Guarani opened the scoring on the half-hour mark when Gonzalez struck and the visitors made it 2-0 eight minutes later through a goal from Ocampo.

In the 68th minute, Ocampo ended Olimpia´s chances of a comeback with his second goal of the game, while Gonzalez claimed a brace as well two minutes later.

Jorge Benitez completed the route in the 81st minute when he scored Guarani´s fifth goal as they moved above Olimpia on goal difference.

Cerro Porteno PF´s clash with Libertad was postponed, while Sportivo Luqueno drew 2-2 with Nacional Asuncion.

Cerro Porteno top the table on 17 points, four ahead of General Diaz and Deportivo Capiata.

Uruguay Primera Division Wrap: River Plate win again, Miramar off the mark
River Plate continued their flawless start to the new Primera Division campaign with a 3-1 home victory over Cerro Largo on Sunday.

Guillermo Almada’s men - who finished third in last season´s Clausura - now top the table on goal difference with Claudio Innella, Hamilton Pereira and Michael Santos all getting on the scoresheet after Adolfo Lima had given the visitors a shock early lead.

The result means they are one of a trio of sides to have won all three of their opening matches of the season, with El Tanque Sisley and Nacional being the others.

In Sunday´s other game, Miramar Misiones picked up their first point of the season by drawing 1-1 with Rentistas at Parque Luis Mendez Piana.

The Montevideo-based outfit have found the going tough in the top flight after their promotion from the Segunda Division, succumbing to a 5-0 loss to Racing on the opening day and following that up with a 2-0 reverse to El Tanque Sisley.

However, they finally got off the mark against Rentistas thanks to Federico Fernandez´s 75th-minute equaliser, which cancelled out Enzo Herrera´s opener.

Fernandez’s strike also marked Miramar´s first goal of the season and they will look to build on that when they travel to sixth-placed Sud America on Saturday.

Colombia Primera A Wrap: Atletico Nacional increase buffer

Atletico Nacional have moved four points clear at the top of Colombia´s Primera A with a 2-1 win over Deportes Quindio.

Fernando Uribe and Wilder Guisao scored just either side of half-time to give Nacional a two-goal lead in front of their home crowd and although Quindio struck in the 59th minute through goalkeeper Julian Viafara, the hosts held on for their fifth straight league victory.

Nacional are top of the Primera A standings, four points clear of Millonarios, who were denied victory when Boyaca Chico struck in second-half injury time to claim a 1-1 draw.

In Medellin, Nacional hit the front in the third minute of first-half stoppage time when Uribe found space on the edge of the area and slotted the ball past Viafara.

It was 2-0 in the 54th minute when Guisao got on the end of a counter-attack, cut inside his defender and lifted his shot over Viafara but Quindio´s goalkeeper gave the visitors some hope five minutes later when he curled a free-kick into the net.

Despite Viafara´s first goal since 2011, Quindio could not manage an equaliser and Nacional held on for victory.

The win took Nacional to 19 points from seven games, while Millonarios (15 from eight), Santa Fe (14 from seven) and Deportivo Cali (14 from eight) are second, third and fourth respectively.

In Tunja, Millonarios looked on track for their fifth consecutive league win after Harrison Otalvaro´s 67th-minute goal but a penalty in second-half stoppage time from Edwin Movil ensured Boyaca Chico claimed a point at home.

Argentina Primera Division Wrap: Promoted Olimpo break through over Boca Juniors

Olimpo have secured their first win of the Argentine Primera Division season with a 3-0 victory over Boca Juniors.

Having spent the 2012-13 season in Argentina´s second tier before earning promotion to the Primera Division, Olimpo had started the 2013-14 campaign poorly with three losses and two draws but broke through for their maiden win on Sunday.

Martin Perez Guedes scored twice for Olimpo as the Bahia Blanca-based club triumphed over visiting Boca.

The hosts took the lead in the seventh minute when Boca´s defence failed to effectively clear Paulo Rosales´ cross and the ball was sent back into the penalty area, where Guedes finished from close range after a shot from one of his teammates was deflected into the right winger´s path.

Olimpo clinched victory in the second half with two goals from set pieces.

Striker Augustin Vuletich doubled Olimpo´s lead with 20 minutes remaining when he got on the end of Damian Musto´s flicked header from a corner to volley home at the back post.

Guedes scored the home side´s third goal, getting his head to Ivan Furios´ flick, following a free-kick from Rosales.

The win has taken Olimpo from second-last to 17th in the 20-team Primera Division with five points, while Boca sit 11th with nine points after their third defeat in five matches.

League leaders Argentinos Juniors stretched their unbeaten run to five games with a 1-0 win over All Boys.

Osvaldo Miranda scored the only goal of the game in the 29th minute when Hernan Boyero touched Rodrigo Gomez´s cross into the path of his striking partner to finish from close range.

Argentinos Juniors have 13 points from six matches and sit one point ahead of Arsenal and San Lorenzo, who both won over the weekend.

Left-winger Martin Rolle scored the decisive goal for Arsenal as they won 1-0 away to Quilmes, while Martin Cauteruccio and Hector Villalba struck either side of half-time as San Lorenzo also triumphed on the road, overcoming Rosario Central 2-0.

River Plate defeated Tigre 3-0, Racing Club drew 1-1 with Lanus and Atletico Rafaela trumped Gimnasia La Plata 2-1.

Pizzi destacó la "personalidad"

ROSARIO -- El técnico de San Lorenzo, Juan Antonio Pizzi, resaltó la "personalidad" de sus jugadores al haber ganado a Central tras la eliminación de la Copa Sudamericana frente a River.

"El equipo tuvo mucha personalidad, conseguimos un triunfo importante en una cancha muy difícil porque empuja mucho su gente", evaluó Pizzi.

El entrenador destacó que sus jugadores tuvieron "mucha personlidad porque se levantaron tras haber perdido la Copa".

Asimismo admitió que ante Rosario Central, "San Lorenzo desequilibró el partido con jugadas individuales".

Tras la eliminación de la Sudamericana, Pizzi rechazó "plantear objetivos a largo plazo: hay que seguir trabajando e ir pasito a pasito".

Minimizó lo ocurrido en la jugada del segundo gol que tanto molestó a los jugadores y técnico de Central.

"Fue mala suerte para ellos porque Elizari estuvo bien habilitado por el árbitro", cerró.

Miguel Russo se fue muy enojado

ROSARIO -- El entrenador de Rosario Central, Miguel Angel Russo, cuestionó a los árbitros y al jugador de San Lorenzo Fernando Elizari por considerar que sacó ventaja deportiva que terminó en el segundo gol.

"Yo en la cancha me agarraba a trompadas con Elizari", dijo luego del partido al aludir a su caracter cuando jugaba al fútbol y dando a entender que el futbolista de San Lorenzo procedió a sabiendas de que sacaba ventaja deportiva.

"Delfino lo autoriza y él (por Elizari) entra cuando viene la pelota. Acá tenés entrenadores y clubes que piden cosas claras, honestas, y cuando te viene torcida no decís nada", disparó Russo, y señaló que "el línea y el cuarto árbitro no lo ayudaron" a Delfino al no avisarle que Elizari sacaba ventajas.

"(El de los árbitros) Es un tema a mejorar de inmediato, si no es muy difícil", disparó Russo, y luego concluyó: "O empezamos a poner las cosas en su lugar y tenemos el arbitraje que tenemos que tener, o somos hijos de Dios todos".

LA VERSIÓN DE ELIZARI

Elizari se mostró sorprendido por la reacción de jugadores y técnico.

"Defino me hizo la señal antes de que se genere la jugada. Me hace la seña, entro y la jugada estaba del otro lado. Entonces justo viene la pelota y yo ¿qué iba a hacer?...la verdad no sé porque se queja la gente de Central, lo puedo entender por el momento, pero la acción fue válida".

Pizzi aseguró que Elizari estaba bien habilitado por el árbitro.

Ramón le apuntó al periodismo

BUENOS AIRES -- Al entrenador de River Plate, Ramón Díaz, al menos en alguna medida, se le subió a la cabeza la goleda que su equipo le propinó a Tigre por 3-0 en el Monumental, en el marco de la sexta fecha del Torneo Inicial.

"Me parece bárbaro que el periodismo nunca nos reconozca nada, los veo muy impacientes", disparó irónicamente Ramón al tomar contacto con la prensa, tras la contundente victoria de los Millonarios, la que no obstante todavía se torna insuficiente para arrimarlos a la cima de la competencia doméstica.

"Tigre siempre es un rival complicado, venía de jugar bien y siempre es dificil ganar este tipo de partidos", resaltó el director técnico riojano, más allá de que su adversario de turno sufrió este domingo su tercer revés consecutivo y cada vez mira con mayor preocupación la tabla de los promedios.

El Pelado consideró también que esta victoria contundente se potencia además porque el elenco que conduce viene de obtener este jueves, ante San Lorenzo de Almagro, la clasificación para los octavos de final de la Copa Sudamericana.

"Creo que el equipo respondió de la mejor manera, jugando al fútbol con paciencia y haciendo goles para recuperarnos en el torneo", resumió quien, por su ciclo anterior, es uno de los entrenadores más exitosos de la historia riverplatense.

"Vienen dos semanas muy importantes para nosotros, teniendo en cuenta también la Copa y sé que la vamos a pelear hasta el final. Hay cosas que te dan un puntapié inicial y haber pasado de ronda fue muy valioso para este grupo desde lo anímico", evaluó el entrenador.

Ramón también destacó que el conjunto de Núñez supo sobreponerse ante Tigre a las ausencias forzadas de Teófilo Gutiérrez y Jonathan Fabbro, uno abocado al seleccionado colombiano por las Eliminatorias Sudamericanas y el otro, al paraguayo, por la misma causa.

"Lo de hoy fue una muestra, teníamos varias ausencias, pero River se fue encaminando con los pibes del club. Estos chicos tienen muchas ganas de mostrarle a la gente que pueden jugar en la primera de River y hoy el acompañamiento del publico nos dio un plus", interpretó.

Bianchi: "No hay excusas"

BAHIA BLANCA -- A pesar de sufrir una goleada elocuente por 3-0 frente a Olimpo en Bahia Blanca, el entrenador de Boca Juniors, Carlos Bianchi, afirmó que le tiene fe a su equipo para pelear por el título en el Torneo Inicial.

"Estamos a tres, ¿a cuánto? ¿A cuatro puntos del primero? Todavia falta mucho", empezó por argumentar Bianchi en su contacto con los periodistas, luego de que Boca perdiera por primera vez en su historia en Bahía Blanca.

A esta competencia doméstica le quedan por delante 13 fechas y cuando la prensa le preguntó concretamente para qué estaba el elenco xeneize, Bianchi respondió con rapidez y optimismo.

"Boca está para pelear arriba", aseguró el Virrey, quien en la ocasión tuvo que soportar tres bajas clave, la del lesionado Juan Román Riquelme y la de los convocados al seleccionado argentino Agustin Orion y Fernando Gago.

"Pienso que no encontramos los espacios para hacer nuestro juego y ellos se adaptan mejor a esta cancha más chica", sostuvo Bianchi a la hora de buscarle razones a este duro revés en suelo sureño.

Cuando alguien le dio la oportunidad de referirse a los 10 minutos iniciales del segundo tiempo, cuando perdían uno a cero y parecía que aún estaban en condiciones de reaccionar, el director técnico aprovechó y remarcó que "en ese momento" pudieron "haber llegado al empate y cambiado el partido".

No obstante, Bianchi admitió que finalmente perdieron "por dos goles idénticos", ya que un adversario peinó la pelota en el poste más próximo al lanzador y otro ingresó por detrás para concretar la chance.

De todos modos, Bianchi asumió que la de Bahía Blanca "es una derrota que duele" y para la que no tienen "ninguna excusa".

Herediano’s Moreira called in for Costa Rica

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica – Costa Rica head Jorge Luis Pinto added a new goalkeeper to his World Cup Qualifying roster on Saturday, following the suspension of starter Keilor Navas for yellow card accumulation.

The Colombian called in Herediano’s Leonel Moreira, who will join Patrick Pemberton to form the team’s goalkeeping tandem for Tuesday’s CONCACAF Hexagonal match at Jamaica.

Both Navas and Christian Bolaños were issued their second cautions of the final round in a 3-1 win over the United States on Friday, a result that catapulted the Ticos into first place. Unlike Navas, no replacement, as of yet, was named for the FC Copenhagen midfielder.

"A few days ago I said that we could not get to play against the USA thinking players could be suspended for accumulation of yellow cards and we did," said Pinto.

Navas has appeared in a team-high 12 qualifiers for Brazil 2014, while Bolaños has played in 10 encounters.
