Ecuador must win against Bolivia in La Paz, says Rueda

Ecuador expects a more difficult game with Bolivia than the one they lost to Colombia. But they must win on Tuesday in La Paz to stay alive in the qualifiers, coach Reinaldo Rueda said on Saturday.

"La Paz is more difficult than the game" that was played on Friday against the Colombians in Barranquilla, Rueda said at a news conference.

The Colombian coach, who got a painful 1-0 defeat against Colombia but still are close to qualifying to Brazil, praised the Bolivians despite their being in last place in the qualifiers and after falling 4-0 against Paraguay in Asuncion.

"That game will be very difficult for many factors. Bolivia has played good games against Argentina, Venezuela. Working hard and with good technical condition they have been strong at home," said the strategist.

According to Rueda the Bolivians are a "seasoned team" and did not hesitate to describe as "complicated" the game next Tuesday in the altitude of La Paz.

After the defeat in Barranquilla, Ecuador dropped to fourth place with 21 points, behind Chile (24) Colombia (26) and Argentina (26).

The qualifiers give four berths to next year´s World Cup, and the option of a playoff for the fifth placed team.

"The important thing is to know that we still have opportunities, we have three tough games. It´s our responsibility to recover and the points in Bolivia will be vital," said coach Rueda.

The Ecuadorian team, which seeks to reach a third World Cup, will face Uruguay at home and close out the qualifiers away to Chile in October.

Rueda highlighted the play of his men in the loss to Colombia and said Ecuador will work to not "lose balance" in the final stretch of the campaign for Brazil.

"We have the character to be in a World Cup. Now we have to win," he said.

The helmsman will be missing defender Gabriel Achilier and Joao Rojas through suspensions for the game against the Bolivians, but may use striker Felipe Caicedo, who was suspended for the game against Colombia.

Psychologically the team is down after the loss to Uruguay, confesses Pizarro

Striker Claudio Pizarro (Bayern Munich, Germany) confessed that the Peruvian team is "psychologically beaten" by the 2-1 loss to Uruguay in Lima in the fifteenth round of the World Cup qualifiers.

"It was very difficult to sleep after the game because psychologically this (defeat) has beaten most players," Pizarro said at a press conference after practice at the Villa Deportiva in Lima.

"The coach (Markarian) was outraged at the refereeing which was not very good. We left everything on the field and we didn´t get what we wanted. Now we want to recover and try to get over this and focus on Venezuela," said Pizarro.

The team captain said the players will continue to seek the classification until the last match.

"We will continue to try to qualify. Now it isn´t in our hands but you can still qualify," he said.

The 34 year old striker said that Peru will recover by getting a victory in Tuesday´s game against Venezuela in Puerto La Cruz.

"Venezuela is a team that has a key player (Juan) Arango, playing in Germany. This player drives the team, we´re going to see what we do in training and analyzing videos," Pizarro went on.

After the game striker Jefferson Farfan was crying on the field and Paolo Guerrero was taken by ambulance to a clinic for a wound on his brow after an elbow from midfielder Walter Gargano.

Players listened to a talk on Saturday from the coach and from a psychologist to motivate them before their training.

"We are sad and heartbroken. Players will have a talk with the psychologist to overcome this defeat. We (coaching staff) are encouraging them," trainer Gonzalo Barreiro told the AFP.

For his part coach Sergio Markarian is confident that his team will bounce back from Friday´s loss against Venezuela.

"I accept and understand all the prognostications (about being eliminated). But I have an obligation to work as long as we are still alive. Now we have to win and hope for other results," said Markarian.

The coach talked about the refereeing of Argentine Patricio Loustau and made an appeal to FIFA to intervene in the choice of referees for these kinds of matches.

"The time has arrived that FIFA looks at South America and intervenes. Enough is enough. And if they have to intervene then so be it. I hope for developments and transparency," the coach said indignantly.

Peru travels on Sunday afternoon to the city of Puerto La Cruz for their match against Venezuela.

The Peruvians will be without three players for the match: striker Jefferson Farfan, suspended for yellow card accumulation; defender Yotún Yhosimar who received a red card against Uruguay; defender Christian Ramos through injury.

Argentina leads the table with 26 points followed by Colombia (26), Chile (24), Ecuador (21), Uruguay (19), Venezuela (16), Peru (14), Paraguay (11) and Bolivia (10).

Chile is without Valdivia for friendly against Spain

The Chilean team traveled to Switzerland to play a friendly against world champions Spain, but without midfielder Jorge Valdivia, the star of Chile´s 3-0 thrashing of Venezuela in the qualifiers.

The staying home of Valdivia "was a decision by Jorge Sampaoli to give the player some rest," according to a source from the National Professional Football Association (NPPA).

Valdivia, affected by severe and frequent ailments in his career, made a great effort to play against Venezuela on Friday, therefore, Sampaoli decided to return him to his club (Palmeiras, Brazil) to prevent further injury, according to the source.

Valdivia was the quarterback for Chile in the teams beat down of Venezuela. They now have 24 points and are third in qualifying.

"The development of the team has to do with the quality of Jorge Valdivia" said Sampaoli at a press conference after the game.

The rest of the Chilean squad traveled to Geneva, Switzerland where they will play Spain on Tuesday, as they have a bye-week in the qualifiers.
