Columbus, Ohio is not a Mexico stronghold in the U.S.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- This city is jinxed for el Tri. It´s the US stronghold against Mexico. An invincibility zone.

In Latin, there is a phrase that fits: Quis custodiet ipsos custodes? Who will guard the guardians?

The Columbus fortress has a special trench, it is the only stadium where Mexicans sought Immigration Reform similar to in the US.

The Columbus Crew fans receive priority in obtaining tickets. Only some, for a pretty penny, fall into Mexican hands, the hungriest Internet foragers.

From shrouded, unrestricted nooks of the endless web, the going rate is 470 dollars. Or a nosebleed seat for... $376.

And it´s not for lack of local presence. According to Columbus census, there´s about 3 thousand potential followers of El Tri in the area, while in nearby Toledo, Ohio around 7 thousand.

That is, Latino organizations estimate 25 thousand Mexicans in and around Columbus, enough to fill the Crew Stadium, that seats an intimate 20,145. Even by increasing its capacity to 22,685, as it did before when the Columbus Crew faced the Los Angeles Galaxy, it would be insufficient for the Mexicans who live in Ohio. Before the reforms, the greatest attendance recorded here was in a US-Mexico match in February 2009, with 23,776 fans.

The problem is that Americans are... actually following their soccer team, who just beat their toughest CONCACAF Zone rival.

In fact, the United States has placed a premium on Mexico in this location. Back in 2002, after a difficult search by US Soccer, at then-US coach Bruce Arena´s behest, a place was located where the United States did not have to play under seemingly hostile conditions at home.

"Don’t applaud us, don’t support us for the 90 minutes, but please don´t make us always play Mexico with the fans in the stands against us," explained Bruce Arena then, who even considered the real possibility of playing in Alaska.

Since the elimination rounds of 2002, the United States has won on three occasions against Mexico at Crew Stadium and three times with the same result: 2-0.

And only one US foe has left Crew Stadium alive. Costa Rica managed a scoreless draw in 2000, during qualifying for the Japan/South Korea World Cup.

At press time this Sunday, there were available, for an exorbitant price, around 1,500 tickets on different web pages including those of Crew fans who would rather just triple what they paid for their ticket.

However, the poor results for El Tri in 2013, which even included the firing of Jose Manuel de la Torre, don´t seem to be inspiring Mexicans in the area to come to the stadium this Tuesday night.

Mexico is all but forced to beat the US for a shot at qualifying for the 2014 Brazil World Cup.

Quis custodiet ipsos custodes? Can el Tri guard the guards and break free in Columbus on Tuesday?

Is Tena the savior of the Tri-tanic?

MEXICO CITY – Xerxes, after asking for the Spartans´ surrender in the film "300," declared: "I will cover the sun with our arrows." Leonidas responded: "Then we will fight in the shadows."

As a player, the public outcry toward Luis Fernando Tena was, "Dominate, don´t just play with the ball." He had two left feet and two right shoes. So exquisite was El Flaco on the ball.

As the coach for El Tri, the outcry from his fan base is simple: "Teach them to go out playing with the ball."

Luis Fernando Tena has everything against him. It seems like his destiny. It seems like his bar code. It seems like his sentence. And it seems that he feels good.

Here is the scenario of the new coach for the Mexican national team.

1. He is a coach for three more games, and El Tri needs to win nine out of nine possible points, or at least six, and should make a stop in New Zealand in order to aim for the World Cup.

2. The reality is that depending on the form displayed and the result against the United States on Tuesday, Tena could end up directing El Tri for one game. If he doesn´t convince, FMF head Justino Compean has a list of favorites on his cellphone, various names.

3. There are no guarantees, even if Mexico qualifies for the World Cup, that Tena will keep the job. That is, he can sow the barren land of CONCACAF and get a World Cup ticket so that someone else reaps the rewards.

4. The contract issue has not been dealt with yet. "We are going to resolve what´s important, the qualification," Tena told Compean and Inarritu.

5. Why the distrust? It is believed that winning the Pan American Gold, the Olympic Gold, the Toulon Tournament and the Pre-Olympic competition was necessarily due to the supervision of deposed coach Jose Manuel "Chepo" de la Torre. It shouldn´t be forgotten that in the final of the Olympic Games against Brazil, Chepo was in Mexico.

6. Tena reportedly disguised his decision to remain, saying that Chepo convinced him to stay, even though there are versions that contradict that claim by Justino Compean.

7. Yet, there he is, winning four of the five tournaments in which he led the national teams in 2011 and 2012. As for the Copa America, as has been insisted, he suffered the sabotage of the kids with an excess of testosterone in the bedroom, but not on the pitch, and this experimental Tri was demolished by punishments, suspensions, replacements and a climate of entertainment.

What does Tena offer? His representative once told me by phone: "Luis Fernando is the best at finding the rival´s defects and taking advantage of them. He only needs to strengthen the attack of his team." That was 19 years ago. And that was Carlos Hurtado, who did not explain to me how he got my private phone number, registered as restricted.

In that interval, during those 19 years, Tena has shut everyone´s mouth.

They accuse him of keeping a "low profile." That doesn´t mean he doesn´t know how to manage groups.

Another accusation: "He doesn’t know how to work with young people, he prefers veterans. How many have debuted during his career?" I am also guilty of this. And again he silenced us with new blood amid some veterans in the four aforementioned tournaments.

Is Tena the Messiah? Is he the savior of the Tri-tanic? There are arguments for that.

What makes you think he can do it with El Tri when Chepo couldn´t do it with him as an assistant? Each person acts differently in the same job.

What is the biggest challenge for Tena in a question of hours? To raise the dead that wander in the Mexico national team and run the risk of giving up again when facing an even more complex game, against a presumptively superior rival and on a field that definitely represents a historical torment and torture for El Tri. Columbus, Ohio has been the site of three Mexico defeats, all 2-0.

That is the challenge: Get the squad on their feet, convince them of their ability, and continue where those first 25 minutes against Honduras -- where there was clarity on the pitch -- can come back. But above all, he must instill the ability to prevail, to survive the 90 minutes so that El Tri don´t go from conformity to apathy, and from there to doubt and discouragement.

It is the opportunity for El Flaco to convince his national team that everyone, at some point, must learn to fight in the shadows, and that this is his momentum.

Can Tena do it? Will the team want to? Because it is our duty…

Luis Fernando Tena could be one and done as Tri boss

MEXICO CITY -- Just three days into his tenure as Mexican national team coach, Luis Fernando Tena could also be close to facing the end of his abbreviated spell. Multiple reports have stated that barring a win against the United States this Tuesday in Columbus, Ohio, El Tri could very well be on the lookout for a new permanent boss.

Following the firing of Jose Manuel de la Torre after a 2-1 loss to Honduras at the Estadio Azteca on Friday, Tena was presented in front of media in Mexico City late Saturday morning. Despite assertions from FMF president Justino Compean that "the process started by ´Chepo´ would stay alive with Tena," several of Compean´s bosses, the owners of the 18 Liga MX franchises, are not so convinced.

On Monday morning Azteca Deportes play-by-play man Antonio Rosique strongly hinted that former Morelia and Atlas boss Tomas Boy would be joining FMF brass in Columbus to talk about a potential contract to replace Tena. After Mexico failed at the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup, it was reported that Boy had been instated as the team´s new manager; this of course came to be just a rumor, as De La Torre was ratified by the owners in July.

Boy, who has yet to win any silverware in his 25-year career as a club manager, is nonetheless considered a strong candidate due to his prior success in pressure-packed situations. His takeover of Atlas in late 2012 presented near-certain relegation at the time that he took the reins; six months later, Atlas was a playoff team and had long forgotten about the dangers of falling into the second division.

Hours after Boy was apparently put up for the job, a new report emerged with Club America boss Miguel Herrera at the center, as the current league champion would be considered to take the team over with just two World Cup qualifiers left.

Herrera, who achieved his first league title after 11 years of managerial experience with Atlante, Monterrey, Estudiantes and Veracruz, is currently atop the Liga MX despite his team having two games fewer than most of the other 17 teams in that field.

At the now infamous owners meeting last July where "Chepo" was ratified as national team manager, Herrera was touted as a top candidate, only to be rebuffed by team president Ricardo Pelaez, who wanted to keep his coach as long as possible. Following further negotiations, Herrera would be offered a guaranteed contract (much in the style of De la Torre´s deal) until 2018.

Still others have speculated on the future of former Monterrey boss Victor Manuel Vucetich, who was offered the job in 2010 but turned it down, and former Chile, Argentina and Athletic Bilbao coach Marcelo Bielsa, who is one of the most sought-after tacticians in Latin America.

Only one outcome on Tuesday would slow down or even eliminate the alleged negotiations: a Mexico win. Sources have told ESPN that Tena would be very much in line to keep the managerial post should El Tri pull out a win over the United States on Tuesday, a feat that would be massive considering the difficulties for Mexico in the current Hexagonal group.

A win over the United States in Columbus would also mean the first WCQ triumph on American soil for Los Verdes against their bitter rivals since Sept. 10, 1972 -- exactly 41 years after their last win.

El Shaarawy: Neymar is the best player in the world

AC Milan striker Stephan El Shaarawy has declared that Neymar is the best player in the world at the moment.

The Italian has praised the Seleção star as well as revealing new teammate Kaka was one of his idols as a boy.

Regular winner Lionel Messi along with Cristiano Ronaldo and Franck Ribery are seen as the favourites to win this year´s Fifa Ballon d´Or, but El Shaarawy believes Neymar is even better than these three in the current game, reports Goal.com.

El Shaarawy told reporters: "I´d say Neymar is the best player in the world at the moment.

"I played against him in Geneva with Italy back in March and he was simply incredible on the ball."

The 21-year-old then went on to voice his admiration for the returning Kaka - who recently completed his return to Milan after a four-year spell at Real Madrid.

He added: "I had a number of idols. It was great to see players such as Kaka and Del Piero week after week. Totti was another of my biggest idols. It´s crazy to be playing against him now."

Jeg tror ikke, vi beholder Vargas - selvom jeg forsat gerne så ham i Porto Alegre. Dog tror jeg, han forlader os. Vi har gode erstatninger i angrebet med de to unge herre, Lucas Coelho og Yuri Mamute. Men vi får se=)

Du kan også sætte mig på USA-Mexico og Jamaica - Costa Rica. Til gengæld kommer jeg ti lat gå i seng efter Armenien - DK i aften, så jeg kommer ikke til at se ret mange af de andre kampe. Man må jo vælge sine kampe med omhu, når der er man skal arbejde.

Er jeg ikke for smadret, så kan det også være jeg kommer til at se Paraguay - Argentina inden jeg skal møde på arbejde. Jeg har jo alligevel sovet 6 timer, hvis jeg falder i søvn ved 20-tiden ;)
