FIFA World Cup Qualifying: Bolivia 1 Ecuador 1

https://www.youtube.com/…7G3a_rzzsjg

Ecuador spurned the opportunity to take a big step towards the 2014 FIFA World Cup as they were held 1-1 by Bolivia.

Reinaldo Rueda´s men could have put breathing spaces between themselves and fifth-placed Uruguay ahead of their match against Colombia on Tuesday.

But the hosts, bottom of the group, doggedly ground out a point after substitute Jaime Arrascaita´s goal had threatened to hand them a rare win.

Felipe Caicedo´s penalty earned the visitors a draw but they will see it as two points dropped.

Ecuador had a 100 per cent record in their eight previous visits to La Paz and would have been hopeful of leaving with a win.

Both teams made a raft of changes from their respective matches on Friday.

Rueda made five to the side that lost 1-0 to Colombia, one was enforced as Gabriel Achilier was suspended for the clash.

Bolivia brought in several new faces, too, including goalkeeper Romel Quinonez, who replaced Sergio Galarza following his error-ridden performance in the 4-0 loss to Paraguay.

The visitors showed plenty of energy early on despite the high altitude in La Paz and had a goal disallowed after 14 minutes.

Manchester United winger Antonio Valencia fired a superb ball across the box, but Jefferson Montero went too far beyond the last man and was flagged offside as he tapped home.

Bolivia found their feet as the half went on and managed to hold onto the ball for longer periods than in the opening quarter.

Juan Arce dragged a shot just wide of Alexander Dominguez´s goal just after the half-hour mark to underline their growing threat.

Bolivia got another sight of goal right on half-time. Alejandro Chumacero got behind the Ecuador defence and was about to shoot when Juan Carlos Paredes intervened with a strong challenge.

The second half saw Bolivia take a surprise lead and it was introduction of Arrascaita that made the difference.

He picked up the ball 30 yards out and fired in a speculative effort that squirmed through the hands of Dominguez.

Bolivia could have made it two when another substitute Marcelo Martins set-up Arrascaita, whose header rattled the post.

When Martins hit the bar soon after, it looked as though a second goal for the hosts was imminent.

But they were made to rue the two missed opportunities three minutes later when Ronald Raldes Balcazar tangled with Montero in the area, handing the visitors a penalty.

Caicedo duly scored from the resulting spot-kick to level the scores.

They went in search of a winner but could not find one and their World Cup fate continues to hang in the balance.

FIFA World Cup Qualifying: Uruguay 2 Colombia 0

https://www.youtube.com/…ZgBr7ui7rng

Uruguay have boosted their hopes of an automatic spot in Brazil next year with a 2-0 victory over Colombia in FIFA World Cup qualifying.

Tuesday´s hosts at the Estadio Centenario in Montevideo were being well-held by a Colombian side seemingly content with a scoreless draw, as it would have guaranteed them a spot in the World Cup finals.

But two goals three minutes apart to Edinson Cavani and Cristian Stuani sent the home fans wild and put the Uruguayans level on points with fourth-placed Ecuador in the South America qualifying group.

The top-four in the nine-country group advance automatically to Brazil, while fifth place must face Jordan, who qualified for the intercontinental play-off on Tuesday.

Uruguay are now six points clear of sixth-placed Venezuela, meaning they are virtually guaranteed of at least the playoff spot but will be hungrily chasing automatic qualification after their third straight victory in the group.

Jose Pekerman´s Colombia remain in second spot on the table on 26 points, still ensconced in the top four although they missed the chance to make sure of their ticket to Brazil.

Colombia frustrated the hosts for large periods, as they played the ball around without any real desire to trouble the scorers.

So it was more relief than anything for the home fans when Cavani got on the end of a ball through from Maxi Pereira out on the right, to nod home the opening goal at the near post on 77 minutes.

The mood quickly changed from frustration to elation and just as they let their hair down, Uruguay made it a two-goal lead when second-half substitute Stuani stormed in to put away a blind-sighted cross from fellow sub Gaston Ramirez.

Uruguay manager Oscar Tabarez was undoubtedly pleased his bench players vindicated his decision to get them on the park, after a stalemate in the opening 45 minutes.

Colombia were the first team to have a sight on goal from a set piece, but Uruguay goalkeeper Fernando Muslera comfortably caught the incoming ball in the fourth minute.

The home side had their first chance from a dead-ball situation in the eighth minute but star attacker Luis Suarez could not bother Colombia´s custodian David Ospina, as his shot from long range lacked power.

Colombian number 10 Teofilo Gutierrez had Muslera at full stretch moments later to parry a powerful strike and Uruguay failed to clear immediately, with the ball ricocheting around the area in an early danger sign for Tabarez´s men.

Uruguay quickly got back on top, though, as their dominance was reflected through a number of corners prior to the interval, although they failed to look threatening from most of them.

Their best chance came when Andres Scotti rose highest at the back post in the 21st minute but Ospina managed to get a slight touch on the cross in, enough to see Scotti miss his header opportunity.

Uruguay came out fired up in the second half with Cavani declaring his intentions by hitting the post with a strike in the first minute after the interval.

Still, Colombia settled back into the game and were content with passing the ball around to burn valuable time as they chased a point to secure their spot in Brazil.

Uruguay persisted though and Suarez smashed a powerful volley from a lay-up header from Stuani just wide of the goal as the hosts looked dangerous.

Pereira then provided the ball that Uruguay had needed all game and Cavani did the rest to ease the tension in Montevideo.

Stuani´s opportunism three minutes later was all Uruguay needed to seal three valuable points.

FIFA World Cup Qualifying: Venezuela 3 Peru 2

https://www.youtube.com/…lh8lI-NzcWQ

Venezuela have kept alive their slim hopes of progressing to the World Cup finals in Brazil, with a 3-2 win over Peru.

Uruguay´s 2-0 win over Colombia meant the hosts at Puerto la Cruz needed to win their final two games to be any chance of sneaking into the South America qualifying play-off spot.

And things went even more awry early when Peru took a lead against the run of play, when Paolo Hurtado completed a fine run with a powerful strike from the right past the on-rushing Venezuela goalkeeper Daniel Hernandez on 20 minutes.

But the home side responded well, taking control of the contest at least in general play and creating numerous chances before Salomon Rondon converted with a sharp right-foot stab past Peru keeper Raul Fernandez eight minutes before half-time.

The goal dashed Peru´s hopes of keeping a clean sheet, although that was already looking unlikely, after Fernandez had earlier tried to clear a ball by punching, only for the ball to go backwards and only just fly over the crossbar.

The sides were level at the interval but it was all Venezuela from there onwards with Yohandry Orozco forcing a save out of Fernandez in the 46th minute to signal the hosts´ intentions.

A 62nd-minute penalty then shattered Peru´s hopes of a comeback, as Cesar Gonzalez confidently stepped up with a well-taken spot kick to put Venezuela ahead. Carlos Zambrano had conceded the penalty when he handballed in the area.

Romulo Otero then wrapped up the three points with a delightful low strike from the edge of the area, with the right-foot shot to the bottom right corner needing to be inch perfect to beat a diving Fernandez.

It was deserved reward for Venezuela, who looked the only team likely to score after the two sides emerged from the dressing rooms.

Zambrano tried to atone for conceding the spot kick, when he pulled a goal back in the shadows of the final whistle but it would not be enough to salvage a point for Peru.

The win leaves Venezuela three points behind Uruguay, who have a game in hand.

The former would need to win their final fixture against Paraguay and hope the Uruguayans lose to both Ecuador and Argentina, all the while making up a differential of six goals.

Peru´s qualifying hopes were slim prior to kickoff and the loss extinguished any chance they could reach fifth place, ensuring their Brazil dream is officially over.
