CONCACAF Champions League Wrap: Toluca trounce Caledonia

Toluca have maintained their perfect start to the CONCACAF Champions League with a 5-1 thumping of Caledonia AIA.

Raul Nava Lopez scored twice for Toluca as the Mexican club thrashed their Trinidadian hosts to move six points clear of Comunicaciones in Group 6.

Edy Brambila also got on the scoresheet for Toluca and set up Lopez´s first strike, while Antonio Naelson scored the fifth goal for the visitors and Caledonia defender Nuru Muhammad notched an own goal.

Toluca opened the scoring in the 18th minute on Wednesday when Brambila cut the ball back for Lopez to tap into the net and the visitors were 2-0 up inside half an hour after Muhammad headed past his own goalkeeper.

Brambila scored Toluca´s third goal in the 41st minute when Caledonia goalkeeper Shemel Louision parried a shot into the midfielder´s path.

The home side hit back six minutes into the second half through Kithson Bain´s strike but any thoughts of a comeback from Caledonia were dashed after Nava made the most of another Louision mistake to score in the 66th minute.

Naelson´s shot from the edge of the area six minutes later wrapped up Toluca´s four-goal victory.

The win took Toluca to nine points from three games, while second-placed Comunicaciones of Guatemala have only played two matches for their three points.

In other results, Laurent Courtois scored after just six minutes to give Los Angeles Galaxy a 1-0 win over Isidro Metapan of El Salvador, which took the Major League Soccer club to the top of Group 8, while Costa Rica´s Herediano defeated Valencia of Haiti 4-2.

Lanus is overpowering in decisive 4-0 win

Argentina´s Lanus thrashed Universidad de Chile 4-0 (3-0) in the first leg of the round of 16 at the 2013 Copa Sudamericana held Wednesday night on Lanus´ home pitch.

Uruguayan Santiago Silva (24), Lucas Melano (30 and 31) and Lautaro Acosta (67) scored the goals for Lanus while the ´U´ ended the game with nine players after the sending off of goalkeeper Jhonny Herrera (80) and Juan Rojas (84).

Thus, Lanus took an important step towards the quarter-finals and will take an almost insurmountable lead to the second leg match to be played on September 25th in Santiago.

The winner of this tie will go up in the next round against the winner of the series between River Plate of Argentina and Ecuador´s Liga de Loja.

BOGOTÁ (DyN) -- Vélez Sarsfield dio en la noche de Bogotá un paso clave hacia los cuartos de final de la Copa Sudamericana porque venció a La Equdad por 2-1 en el juego de ida.

El delantero Lucas Pratto fue la figura de la noche y el gestor de los dos goles velezanos, los que se concretaron en el segundo tiempo por un tanto en contra de Yonni Hinestroza, a los 7 minutos, y un acierto de Ariel Cabral, a los 35.

El empate provisorio para los colombianos lo había conseguido Wilmer Díaz, de cabeza, a los 29.

En el primero de los tantos de los Fortineros, Pratto buscó a Mauro Zárate en una posición muy propicia, pero Yonni Hinestroza al intentar un cruce batió su propia valla.

Pareció que el equipo de Ricardo Gareca tenía la situación controlada, pero, tras un tiro libre, Díaz se anticipó de cabeza y con ese desvío oportuno hizo pasar el balón entre las piernas del arquero uruguayo Sebastián Sosa.

De todos modos, Vélez logró remediar pronto el panorama porque Emiliano Papa se escapó por la izquierda y habilitó a Pratto, quien al ver a Cabral mejor ubicado le proporcionó la asistencia justa.

El desquite se realizará el miércoles 2 de octubre en el Estadio José Amalfitani y Vélez acudirá a esa cita con una considerable ventaja, ya que se impuso afuera e inclusive marcó dos goles.

Ayala no es más el manager de Racing

BUENOS AIRES -- El ciclo de Roberto Ayala como mánager del Racing Club llegó a su fin este miércoles por la noche, ya que la comisión directiva le pidió la renuncia.

El ex defensor de Ferro, River, Napoli, Milan y el seleccionado argentino había asumido su cargo en diciembre de 2011.

El Ratón, quien en sus tiempos de destacado marcador central afrontó tres mundiales de mayores con el seleccionado de la AFA (Francia ´98, Corea-Japón 2002 y Alemania 2006) y fue campeón olímpico (en Atenas 2004), dejó de ser el mánager de la Academia porque la conducción quedó disconforme con su participación en el último mercado de pases.

Ayala ya había anticipado en declaraciones públicas que si le pedían la renuncia no iba a poner obstáculos.

El despido se da en medio de una interna entre el presidente Gastón Cogorno y el vice Roberto Molina que viene recrudeciendo en los últimos días.

Este despido se suma a la "renuncia" del presidente de la Sede de Capital, Rubén Guevara, en una moción impulsada por los allegados al vicepresidente

Silva quiere enfrentar a River

BUENOS AIRES -- El delantero uruguayo de Lanús, Santiago Silva, que vistió la camiseta de Boca, reconoció que le gustaría que River sea su rival en los cuartos de final de la Copa Sudamericana. Descartó ser convocado para su selección.

El uruguayo Santiago Silva, quien volvió a decir presente en la red en el 4-0 de Lanús sobre Universidad de Chile en la ida de los octavos de final de la Copa Sudamericana, reconoció que no esperaban "un resultado tan abultado" y atribuyó la goleada a que fueron "contundentes".

Asimismo, el delantero manifestó que, en caso de avanzar a cuartos de final, preferiría enfrentar a River Plate para evitar "un viaje" y, por otra parte, confió que "tendría que pasar algo catastrófico para ser convocado" al seleccionado de su país.

En declaraciones a Radio La Red, el Tanque, autor de un gol anoche, calificó al 4-0 en la `Fortaleza Granate´ ante la `U´ de Chile como un "resultado contundente".

"No esperábamos en la previa que sea tan abultado. Estamos conformes con el rendimiento de ayer, sabemos que le ganamos a un grande de Chile", enfatizó.

"Todavía nos queda la revancha en Chile pero si pasamos prefiero jugar contra River porque así no viajamos. Igualmente, hoy a la noche vamos a ver su partido ante Liga de Loja (Ecuador) porque de ahí saldría nuestro rival", agregó.

En tanto, al respecto de si aún sueña con ser convocado para el seleccionado de su país de cara al Mundial 2014, el uruguayo fue tajante al señalar que "tiene que pasar algo catastrófico" para que sea llamado al conjunto dirigido por Oscar Tabarez.

"No tengo chances. En Banfield, Vélez y Boca tuve grandes momentos y de la selección no me llamó nadie", manifestó el atacante sobre el elenco oriental, que pelea por un lugar en Brasil 2014 con una delantera en la que sobresalen Luis Suárez, Edinson Cavani, Diego Forlán y Diego Rodríguez, entre otros.

VUELTA AL TRABAJO

En otro orden, luego de la goleada del miércoles ante el conjunto chileno, el plantel de Lanús se entrenó el jueves por la mañana en su estadio con el objetivo de pulir detalles para el choque del próximo domingo ante Quilmes, por el Torneo Inicial.

Lanús, que suma 12 puntos y está a dos del líder Newell´s, visitará al `cervecero´ (9) el domingo, desde las 14, en el estadio `Centenario´, con el arbitraje de Darío Herrera, en el marco de la octava fecha.

Dirigente de Racing acusa a Molina

BUENOS AIRES -- El renunciante secretario de Racing Leandro Rodríguez Hevia acusó el jueves al vicepresidente del club, Rodolfo Molina, de hacer "una especie de golpe de estado" contra el titular del club, Gastón Cogorno.

"Considero que lo de ayer (miércoles) fue una especie de golpe de Estado. El vicepresidente quiere manejar el club sobre el presidente. Si eso no es un golpe de Estado no sé qué es", sostuvo Rodríguez Hevia a radio La Red.

El dirigente, que ocupaba la función de secretario, dimitió tras una larga reunión en la que también se decidió echar al manager Roberto Ayala, que venía siendo sostenido por Cogorno.

Molina, el primer presidente tras el gerenciamiento y la intervención del club, fue el fogonero de Cogorno como candidato a sucederlo pero con el tiempo se formó una interna que este año fue dejando huellas, como la renuncia del sacerdote Juan Gabriela Arias, el titular de la sede de Viola del Parque, Rubén Guevara, fuertemente cuestionado tras el homicidio del periodista partidario Nicolás Pacheco.

El primero no jugó la interna sino que buscó limar las asperezas, el segundo fue sostenido por Cogorno hasta que no pudo más y ahora se quedó sin Ayala y la renuncia de Rodríguez Hevia.

Cogorno, a quien cuestionan de hacer una gestión personalista, casi que quedó con escaso apoyo. Solo el secretario general Christian Devia quedó de su lado dentro de la mesa chica.

Molina, junto a su influyente vice segundo Víctor Blanco, ganó posicionamiento con la salida de Ayala, a quien el sector del vice lo hace responsable por las frustraciones deportivas. La contratación de Luis Zubeldía, al que lo echaron 40 días después de renovarle el contrato, el nivel de las incorporaciones. Ayala también fue quien llevó al actual técnico Carlos Ischia.

Cuando renunció Zubeldía, desde el sector molinista avisaban que si el nuevo técnico llevado por Ayala fracasaba el manager se iba con él. El equipo siguió perdiendo. Va último en el torneo Final y todavía no ganó en el segundo semestre. Ischia solo lleva dos partidos y aún sobrevive en Racing.

Rodríguez Hevia, al hablar con distintos medios, admitió que se sentía la "piedra en el zapato", que Molina había puesto "todos los demonios" sobre él y que la dimisión buscó llevar paz.

El dimitente admitió explícitamente que era elemento de conflicto en la relación presidente y vice.

Este jueves sacó a la luz como nunca la interna: "Molina quiere manejar el club y Cogorno no se defiende", describió e insistió con el supuesto "trastrocamiento institucional" del vice.

Sin dar nombres, el cura Juan Gabriel, renunciante hace unos meses porque no lo consultaban o porque estaba en desacuerdo con algunas medidas "económicas" o "deportivas", confió en que pueden limarse esas internas y tirar los dos para adelante.

"Yo creo que hay lugar para los dos", sostuvo y se mostró optimista de que haya un "principio de solución y que se descomprima" el tema.

A penalty from Jonny Uchuari has secured a 2-1 win for LDU Loja over River Plate in their Copa Sudamericana round-of-16 first leg.

Uchuari earned the penalty when River Plate´s central defender German Pezzella clipped his ankle just after the hour mark and LDU´s 19-year-old playmaker stepped up to convert the spot kick and wrap up victory at the Estadio Federativo Reina del Cisne.

In a tight and often feisty encounter in Loja, Uchuari led the way for the hosts, starting the move that led to his team´s opening goal and then scoring the winner.

The victory on Thursday means LDU will head to Argentina next week with plenty of confidence, although River Plate will remain hopeful of reaching the quarter-finals after Osmar Ferreyra´s away goal.

LDU took the lead just after the half hour mark when Uchuari took a free-kick on the left wing, and his squared ball to found Dixon Arroyo, whose shot was deflected in by captain Pedro Larrea.

The Argentine visitors equalised in the 59th minute when Ferreyra finished off Manuel Lanzini´s good lead-up work but LDU struck back only seven minutes later when Uchuari scored from the spot.

While Pezzella was furious to have been penalised for a trip on LDU´s teenage star, the referee had no hesitation pointing to the spot or yellow-carding the River Plate defender.

Uchuari slotted his penalty into the top-right corner as River Plate goalkeeper Marcelo Barovero dived the wrong way and LDU were on track for victory.

In just their second appearance in a South American continental club competition, LDU will hope to go one better than in the 2012 Copa Sudamericana, when they were eliminated by Sao Paulo of Brazil in the round-of-16.

CONCACAF Champions League Wrap: Arroryo Arabe´s winning connection

Panama´s Arabe Unido have claimed top spot in Group One of the CONCACAF Champions League after a 2-0 win over W Connection.

Arabe´s attacker Abdiel Arroyo played a role in both goals, setting up the first and scoring the second as the Panamanians took all three points at W Connection´s Hasely Crawford Stadium.

The victory on Thursday took Arabe to six points from three games, lifting them to top of their group, two points clear of Major League Soccer´s Houston Dynamo, who have a game in hand.

Arabe edged ahead of W Connection just before the half-hour mark as left full-back Luis Fraiz burst down the wing, received a pass from Arroyo and thrashed the ball home for his maiden goal in the continental club competition.

The visitors completed their victory with 30 minutes remaining as Jose Gonzalez sent Arroyo in behind the home side´s defence, and the 19-year-old winger rounded W Connection goalkeeper Alejandro Figueroa to score.

LFPB Wrap: Wilstermann surprise Bolivar, The Strongest climb equal top


Wilstermann stunned Liga del Futbol Profesional Boliviano (LFPB) leaders Bolivar 3-1, allowing The Strongest to grab a share of the lead.

The Strongest defeated Aurora 3-2 to join Bolivar on 15 points at the top of the LFPB table but remain just behind the latter due to goal difference.

Rodrigo Ramallo, Felix Quero and David Mainz scored the goals for Wilstermann as they claimed their first victory in five games, while Bolivar suffered their first loss in six matches.

In Cochabamba on Wednesday, Ramallo put Wilstermann in front in the 12th minute and the hosts doubled their lead just 11 minutes later thanks to Quero´s strike.

Just after the hour mark, Mainz struck to make it 3-0 for the hosts and although Rudy Cardozo pulled a goal back with 15 minutes remaining, Bolivar never looked likely to pull off a comeback.

In La Paz, reigning Apertura champions The Strongest resisted two attempted comebacks from Aurora to triumph by a goal.

Raul Castro made it 2-0 for The Strongest just two minutes after half-time after Pablo Escobar had given the home side the lead in the first half but Aurora hit back in the 55th minute through Vladimir Castellon.

Nelvin Soliz stretched The Strongest´s lead to two goals again just after the hour mark but Oscar Diaz´s 71st-minute strike for Aurora ensured a nervous finish for the home team.
