Soccer roundup: Cobreloa moves top of Chile’s Primera División
Third-placed O’Higgins defeats Universidad Católica, sending Cobreloa into first place after a win over Cobresal.
Universidad Católica 1-2 O’Higgins
Universidad Católica relinquished its spot at the top of the league table Saturday, after a terrible first half performance saw the side go down 2-0 to a strong O’Higgins team. Católica blitzed the visitors in the second period, though a man-of-the-match performance from O’Higgins goalkeeper Paulo Garcés ended the home side´s 21-game unbeaten run.
“The first half was horrible,” Católica manager Martín Lasarte said to press after the match. “We were nervous and made some crazy moves, though all things considered the game was ours. It’s unfortunate, but we lost having given everything.”
From the start, Católica looked sluggish in midfield, allowing the visitors time and space to build attacks. O’Higgins midfielder César Fuentes threaded a diagonal ball into the box in the 17th minute — the pass should have been dealt with easily but for a comical, mistimed slide from defender Alfonso Parot that let in Luís Pedro Figueroa. The right winger’s shot was weak, though goalkeeper Cristopher Toselli was caught off-balance and the ball trickled in past his outstretched arm.
Five minutes later, Católica was undone by a throw-in into the technical area — the toss was innocuous enough, though somehow it was left to bounce into the 12-yard box at the eager feet of Figueroa who claimed his second.
O’Higgins kept coming, and forced a penalty just before half time — striker Pablo Calandria hit the woodwork with the spot kick, though Católica did not escape unscathed as defender Enzo Andía was sent off for committing the foul.
Católica came out from halftime break a changed team, and surged forward in search of goals. Having already prevented Nicolas Castillo and Ismael Sosa from registering in the first half, Garcés frustrated the attackers time and again with a handful of fine second half blocks.
Figueroa was soon sent off for a bad tackle on midfielder Tomas Costa, and in the 75th minute Católica’s Milovan Mirosevic struck the crossbar with a drive from distance. The balance of power had truly shifted in favor of the homeside, yet the team could only find its way past Garcés on a single occasion — four minutes from time striker Álvaro Ramos whipped in a low shot past the unsighted keeper.
Lasarte pointed out that such unbeaten runs cannot last forever, though with midweek commitments in the Copa Sudamericana close on the heels of an away fixture to fourth-placed Iquique, the club may be starting to feel the pinch for the first time this season.
Cobreloa 2-0 Cobresal
Cobreloa went top of the table after winning the “Classico Minero” against fellow northern club Cobresal on Sunday. Cobreloa has now gone unbeaten in an incredible 26 games across the Copa Chile, Copa Sudamericana, and Primera División. The run is the side’s best record in 21 years. Intriguingly, the last team to beat the Cobreloa was Católica all the way back in April.
Cobreloa’s steady rise has been in large part down to resolute defending and dangerous counter attack play, and head coach Jorge García has spoken about that extra flair that is required to turn a good team into a great team.
Such flashes of inspiration may finally be manifesting themselves, if the game’s first goal is anything to go by. On the quarter-hour mark and after a maze of midfield passes, a swift through ball preceded a gorgeous backheel in the area to tee up midfielder Hugo Droguett, whose sublime effort with the outside of his boot left the keeper no chance.
Cobresal was not without chances. Just before the half, striker Miguel Cuellar was unlucky to see his shot kept out by a fingertip save followed by a goalline clearance. The home team was most often in control however, and Droguett’s second goal minutes from time ensured the scoreline further reflected his team’s dominance.
Cobreloa is now a point above Católica and Cobresal sits eighth.
Universidad de Chile 2-0 Audax Italiano
After last week’s disappointment in Argentina, “La U” bounced back with a win over Italiano on Sunday. The home team was less than convincing in front of goal, wasting several chances, though managed to grind out a result through dominant possession statistics.
“La U” opened the scoring on the half-hour mark — Italiano midfielder Bryan Carrasco was adjudged to have brought down defender Roberto Cereceda illegally in the box, and spot-kick specialist Charles Aránguiz fired home with authority.
Italiano snuck in some shots, and keeper Luis Marín’s reflexes were tested with a volley just after the break, though “La U” defender Juan Ignacio Sills’ 54th-minute goal put the game to rest.
“La U” is now fifth in the league and Italiano is 13th.
Colo Colo 0-1 Palestino
Taking three points away from the Estadio Monumental remains a high achievement in Chilean soccer, though these days it ceases to be a rarity. Palestino handed Colo Colo its fifth home defeat of the season as “Los Albos” failed to carry any momentum from last week’s win over Rangers into this game.
Palestino could have gone up in the first half, though defender Miguel Escalona’s header was kept out by the bar. Soon after, Colo Colo’s Nicolás Canales showed great balance to set himself up in the box on the turn, though his shot had no power behind it and fell into Jose Quezada’s gloves.
A handball in the box led to a Palestino spot kick with 15 minutes to play. Diego Cháves’ cocky panenka penalty enraged and thrilled fans on either side of the divide.
In the dying minutes, some dazzling footwork from Colo Colo’s Emiliano Vecchio set up Fabián Benitez with a sitter, though the midfielder struck the post to cap off an afternoon of frustration for the home side.
Colo Colo is now 14th and Palestino goes seventh.
Everton 1-2 Unión Española
A win over Everton on Friday saw Española´s patchy season record read five losses and three victories, with the title holder exchanging basement dwelling for mid-table obscurity. Everton’s fourth loss in five games sees the side meet Española in the middle, though coming from the opposite direction.
The latent potential in the strike partnership between Sebastián Jaime and Gustavo Canales was at long last unlocked in this match, with both forwards netting and having a hand in the build up to each other’s goals.
Canales’ 27th minute opener was cancelled out with a volley from nowhere by Everton midfielder Ángel Rojas, though Española’s lead was restored with a Jaime strike in the 76.
Española and Everton are 12th and ninth respectively, separated by a point.
Universidad de Concepción 2-1 Rangers
Overachieving Concepción defeated Rangers in an entertaining match Saturday. The newly promoted club has lost just two games all season and sits comfortably at 6th in the league, while Rangers sink to 16th.
Concepción midfielder Sixto Peralta guided in a cross in the 50th minute for his second goal of the season, and a back-and-forth match looked to be decided on the solitary goal before Rangers striker Mauricio Gómez’s bobbling shot somehow made it through a net of defenders in the 86th. Concepción’s fighting spirit would not be shackled however, and midfielder Fernando Manríquez’s screamer in the 93rd was a worthy match winner.
Unión La Calera 1-3 Santiago Wanderers
A 3-1 win over Unión La Calera gave Wanderers their first win in six games Saturday, taking the Valparaíso team to 10th in the table.
La Calera’s Arnaldo Giménez made a strong claim for goalkeeping howler of the season, when he let striker Nicolás López Macri’s tame shoot trickle between his hands in the 24th minute. Midfielder Maximiliano Bajter’s scrappy goal restored parity four minutes later, though Giménez would once again act as saboteur, giving away a penalty after the break. Striker Matías Donoso converted the dead ball, and added another in injury time for good measure.
Unión La Calera is 15th in the league.
Ñublense 3-1 Huachipato
Huachipato replaced Ñublense at the bottom of the table Sunday, after the home side’s first win of the season.
The first goal of the match was something to behold, as Jonatan Cisternas swept a magnificent through ball into the path of rightback Benjamín Ruiz, who then did well to ward off his marker and finish in the bottom right on 27 minutes.
Just after the break, Ñublense stormed further into the lead — striker Luciano Vásquez showed off his heading ability and his footwork with a pair of goals in under two minutes.
Huachipato managed a consolation goal on the hour mark — a handball in the box lead to a penalty that playmaker Daniel González fired into the keeper before scoring on the rebound — though the visitors could muster no further fightback.
Antofagasta 1-2 Iquique
Iquique remains an outside contender for the title after felling Antofagasta away on Sunday, rising to fourth place in the table and just four points off the top.
Antofagasta striker Javier Elizondo gave his team the lead early on, firing in a rebound off the post in the 12th minute, though Iquique levelled the score via attacking midfielder Rodrigo Díaz’s beautiful freekick fifteen minutes later. Midfielder Santiago Romero netted from close range just before the break, and his team played out the second half for the win.
Antofagasta now sits 11th in the league.
