The Strongest have claimed top spot in the Liga de Futbol Profesional Boliviano table, with a 1-0 win over Guabira.

Eduardo Villegas´ men were expected to handle the threat of second-bottom Guabira in relatively easy fashion in front of their Estadio Hernando Siles faithful in La Paz.

But the visitors put on a brave performance, creating several promising forays forward although the first half would end goalless.

The league leaders claimed all three points when a goal-bound header from a corner was parried by the Guabira goalkeeper into the path of Gaston Mealla, who had no trouble converting from point-blank range on 72 minutes.

The Strongest are two points clear at the top of the table through eight games, having tallied 18 points with six wins, while Bolivar and Nacional Potosi - second and third respectively - slipped up.

Bolivar were held to a 0-0 draw away at bottom side Aurora, who earned just their fourth point of their campaign.

Miguel Angel Portugal´s Bolivar have The Strongest covered for goal differential (plus 14 compared to plus seven) but sit two points behind them.

Nacional Potosi came from behind to salvage a point at home to Oriente Petrolero in a 1-1 stalemate.

Potosi are one point in arrears of Bolivar, with each of San Jose (fourth) and Wilstermann (fifth) snapping at their heels on 14 points.

San Jose had a 2-1 win over Universitario, with Marcelo Gomes scoring the winner on 80 minutes for the hosts.

Markarian summons 15 players who play abroad for matches against Argentina and Bolivia

Peru football coach, Uruguayan Sergio Markarian, summoned 15 players playing abroad for the games against Argentina and Bolivia, on October 11 and 15, respectively, in the last two rounds of South American qualifying. Peru is eliminated from the World Cup.

The list of players does not include starting goalkeeper Raul Fernandez (Dallas, USA) as he is suspended for yellow card accumulation. In his spot Markarian chose two keepers who play locally.

The attacking trio of Claudio Pizarro (Bayern Munich, Germany), Jefferson Farfan (Schalke 04, Germany) and Paolo Guerrero (Corinthians, Brazil) were all called up.

In the coming days the coaching staff will release the list of local players who will play in the game against Argentina.

In the seventeenth round of the World Cup qualifiers, Peru will visit Argentina in Buenos Aires on October 11, and four days later will welcome Bolivia to Lima.

Argentina leads the qualifiers with 29 points, followed by Colombia (26), Chile (24), Ecuador (22), Uruguay (22), Venezuela (19), Peru (14), Bolivia (11) and Paraguay (11).

SAO PAULO (EFE) -- El Itagüí colombiano sorprendió al imponerse 1-0 al Coritiba brasileño en un partido falto de emociones en la sureña ciudad de Curitiba y tomó ventaja en la ida de los octavos de final de la Copa Sudamericana.

Un gol del centrocampista Yesid Mena, en el primer minuto del segundo tiempo, deja cómodo al equipo colombiano para definir a su favor el pase a cuartos de final el 24 de octubre en Itagüí, en la zona metropolitana de Medellín.

El Coritiba, de aceptable campaña en el Campeonato Brasileño, decepcionó a los pocos aficionados que fueron al estadio Couto Pereira de la capital del sureño estado de Paraná.

La reaparición del centrocampista Alex, máxima figura del equipo y uno de los mejores jugadores de la Liga brasileña, no fue suficiente para que el Coritiba superara al equipo colombiano, de impecable aplicación táctica durante el partido.

Las Águilas Doradas del Itagüí dieron el primer campanazo de alerta con un contragolpe de Mena a los cuatro minutos, pero el Coritiba,respondió con jugadas casi siempre orquestadas por Alex y que terminaron en remates de cabeza, uno de ellos del defensor argentino Sergio Escudero.

Mena, que tuvo otra oportunidad clara en el primer tiempo, aprovechó un descuido del zaguero Chico y a los treinta segundos del segundo tiempo sentenció la victoria.

Chico trató de redimirse de su error y en el minuto 55, con un golpe de cabeza, exigió al arquero argentino Osvaldo Cabral, que fue figura.

El delantero Luis Enrique Quiñones tuvo la oportunidad de ampliar la ventaja, pero el arquero Vanderlei neutralizó la jugada.

Este partido de ida de los octavos de final de la Copa Sudamericana se disputó en el estadio Couto Pereira, de Curitiba, ante 10.000 aficionados.

Cantero: "Pelea con barra no la perdí"

BUENOS AIRES -- El presidente de Independiente, Javier Cantero, enfatizó hace instantes que "la pelea con la barra" de ninguna manera la perdió.

"La pelea con la barra no la perdí", definió Cantero en declaraciones radiales.

Es más, el dirigente subrayó que la forma en que afrontó la lucha contra los violentos "es un punto" que se anota a favor.

En esa dirección, recordó: "Un día entraron a la oficina (de la sede de la Avenida Mitre), me encerraron y yo les pregunté cuánto se llevaban por mes".

"Ahí se enteraron varios y se produjo un quiebre y las diferencias, y comenzaron las disputas internas", completó Cantero.

"Ahora que no hay visitantes unos van a un lugar y otros al otro, entonces dicen que hay dos barras. Por lo que dicen hay una diferencia entre dos personas que supuestamente eran jefes que tienen derecho de admisión y no entran al club ni a la cancha, y que están bajo sumario", remarcó. Sin embargo, elevó la apuesta y afirmó: "En la cancha de Huracán vi a los jefes de las supuestas dos barras sentados bastante cerca. El que le dicen Bebote y el que le dicen Loquillo. En la cancha de Independiente no entran".

Además, dijo no estar al tanto de que una persona fue apuñalada el lunes en el partido ante Sarmiento de Junín y sostuvo que está "satisfecho" por la pelea que encabezó contra la barrabrava del club, disputa que a su entender no perdió. Por otra parte, subrayó que pese a los últimos buenos resultados "Independiente sigue teniendo los mismos problemas económicos, aunque se trabaja más tranquilo en la semana" y se refirió a la actualidad del Racing Club, clásico rival sumergido en una crisis institucional interna.

"A nosotros nos pasó y hay personas que ya no están. Y los que quedamos tratamos de estar lo más unidos posible, espalda con espalda, atrincherándonos", sugirió Cantero, y aclaró que de ningún modo se trató de un consejo hacia sus pares racinguistas porque es "nuevo en esto" del fútbol. En ese sentido, agregó: "Conozco a (Gastón) Cogorno y a (Rodolfo) Molina. Tuve algunas diferencias con ellos pero me parece gente de bien y honesta, y ojalá que se repongan".

Sin visitantes por tiempo indefinido

BUENOS AIRES -- El fútbol argentino continuará sin hinchas visitantes por tiempo indeterminado, confirmó el vicepresidente de la AFA, Luis Segura.

"Va a seguir todo igual, no va a haber modificaciones y no hay plazos para que vuelvan los visitantes", precisó Segura en declaraciones a DyN.

Si bien se especulaba que continuaría esta prohibición, el presidente de AFA, Julio Grondona, había generado una incertidumbre al deslizar que se volvería a tratar el tema en la reunión del Comité Ejecutivo.

Pero una vez que concluyó la sesión del Comité sucedió la que era previsible, al menos de momento no se va a innovar, por lo que el Superclásico entre River Plate y Boca Juniors, del domingo 6 de octubre, en el estadio Monumental, se jugará solo con hinchas Millonarios.

"Estamos esperando que se pueda poner en funcionamiento el AFA PLUS, consideramos que para fin de año se puede llegar a tener a todos los estadios con ese sistema funcionando", argumentó Segura, quien también se desempeña como titular de Argentinos Juniors.

Y la máxima autoridad de la entidad de La Paternal, dio más detalles: "La experiencia de Colón-San Lorenzo fue muy positiva, trajo buenos resultados y vamos por ese camino. Hoy por hoy, de los estadios de Primera, estarían en condiciones más o menos la mitad para poner en marcha el sistema, pero esperamos que sea en todos antes de fin de año".

Esta resolución de seguir sin pública visitante en los escenarios futbolísticos se tomó en la AFA al cabo de una jornada que incluyó la reunión que mantuvo Julio Grondona con Sergio Berni, el secretario de Seguridad de la Nación, de la que posteriormente se informó al Comité Ejecutivo. Ya al tanto de todo lo tratado, el Comité ratificó tras su actividad del martes por la noche que los visitantes todavía tendrán que esperar para regresar a los estadios.

Al término del cónclave, otro dirigente que en el edificio de la calle Viamonte dialogó con los periodistas fue Enrique Lombardi, presidente de Estudiantes de La Plata.

"Me parece muy chiquitito pensar que la revancha podría beneficiar a alguien en particular. Creo que las razones de seguridad son muy importantes, muy sensibles en estos momentos para anteponer intereses chiquititos o mezquinos a un tema tan importante", sostuvo Lombardi.

Y continuó con sus fundamentos: "Creo que esta medida va a ser hasta fin de año y vamos a tener que trabajar todos este tiempo, no sólo con el AFA PLus, sino con ideas que acompañen algunas leyes, y sé que se está trabajando en eso, como para generar un contexto en el que el visitante pueda volver en toda su dimensión y no con medidas espasmódicas que duren una o dos fechas, porque eso no es serio".

Lombardi terminó de explayarse acerca de su visión del problema de la violencia en el fútbol: "Hasta que no cambien las condiciones reales, producto de todas las cuestiones que hay que resolver, me parece una buena medida que el visitante, lamentablemente, no concurra a un estadio con todo lo que significa eso, pero hay un fin superior que es la seguridad".

Brazilians concerned by 2014 schedule

A group of Brazil-based footballers including Alexandre Pato, Juninho and Luis Fabiano are concerned about the rigours of the domestic club schedule during the build-up to the 2014 World Cup.

The group, which totals 75 players from Brazil’s top two leagues, have claimed in a letter to daily newspaper O Globo that their health will be put at risk because of the packed club schedule.

They are reported to have said: “We believe that taking this first step means moving toward professionalism, transparency and the pursuit of excellence in soccer. We have the support of other athletes and invite all professional football and those passionate about the sport to join us.”

The players’ concerns follow the publication of a schedule which shows Brazilian teams to have fewer days rest in the World Cup year.

However, a spokesman for the Confederacao Brasileira de Futebol (CBF) responded by saying that a letter is yet to be received.

The amount of matches played by Brazilian teams is already a contentious issue, with competitions including state championships, the domestic cup and South American regional competitions such as the Copa Libertadores.

Flamengo defender Leo Moura told O Globo: “The first main goal is the health of every athlete and concern for Brazilian football. With this marathon of games it’s impossible for a human being to maintain the level of excellence and quality to play good football.”

Newspaper Folha de S.Paulo reports that the players have drawn up a compromise proposal in which they will not be required to play more than seven games a month.

The report added that players would like their domestic season to run alongside that of the European leagues from August to May.

Dely Valdes: My kids have initiative

The names of Julio and Jorge Dely Valdes are inextricably linked with the history of Panamanian football. Outstanding performers for their country on the pitch, the twins have continued to serve Panama well since retiring, and are now steering their national teams to unprecedented levels of success.

The recently concluded 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup provides a measure of their progress. Under Julio’s stewardship, Los Canaleros finished runners-up, losing to tournament hosts USA in the final after beating Mexico twice on the way, a feat they had never achieved before.

It is not just the seniors who have been punching above their weight, however. An assistant coach to Julio with the full national team, Jorge has also been working wonders with Panama’s U-17s in recent years.

Speaking to FIFA.com a few weeks before he takes his youngsters to the FIFA U-17 World Cup United Arab Emirates 2013, he gave an exclusive insight into the progress Panama’s teenage hopefuls have been making in recent years.

Paths to glory

The Central Americans’ rise to prominence can be traced back to the preliminaries for the FIFA U-17 World Cup Mexico 2011 and was triggered by a change in approach implemented by the coaching staff, one that involved a lot of extra preparation and travelling.

“That was the first Panama team to reach the world finals in that age group,” said Jorge. “We’d never qualified before and the thing that made the difference was patience. I’d taken over the team a year and a half earlier, and we brought the boys together three or four months before the tournament.”

Describing his groundbreaking approach to the job, he said: “We also did something that had never been done before: we travelled the whole country looking for players to play in the team.”

It was a demanding job that nevertheless brought some special rewards, as Jorge explained: “It was on our travels that we discovered Roberto Chen, who is now with Malaga.”

Still only 19, Chen is now a permanent fixture in the full team, having captained the U-17 side that charted new territory by qualifying for Mexico 2011 and went still further by qualifying for the second round, where they lost to the hosts and eventual champions Mexico 2-0.

“It felt very special,” said Coach Valdes, who appeared for Panama in every FIFA World Cup™ qualifying competition between 1994 and 2006. “Qualifying for the finals and then getting through the group phase was a shot in the arm for us.”

Next stop UAE

That achievement has set the bar very high for Panama’s class of 2013 as they prepare to take on the world in the United Arab Emirates. Anything less than an improvement on the country’s showing at Mexico 2011 will be a cause for disappointment.

“This team is better than the previous one,” said Jorge of his current squad, which lost to the Mexicans in the final of the CONCACAF qualifiers. “We had a good qualifying competition and my feeling is that this team creates more goalscoring opportunities than the previous one.

“The players are very organised on the pitch,” he added. “We’re solid at the back and don’t concede many, but we always push forward really well down the flanks and we’ve got people up front who know how to take chances. We like to have possession of the ball.”

As well as having a well-balanced line-up, the Panamanians are also motivated, a defining characteristic of all Canalero sides these days. As Jorge went on to explain, psychology is an essential ingredient in Panama’s success story: “The best sides come together in the dressing room. We work on motivation with all the teams and I think that shows. As coaches we’re sometimes surprised to see the players using their own initiative on the pitch. You can tell they’re a tight-knit bunch.”

In qualifying for successive world finals, Panama’s teenagers have shown that solid foundations are in place and that the prospects for the full national side are bright. Expanding on that point, Jorge said: “We’ve tried to instil a philosophy that runs from the youth teams all the way up to the seniors. That makes it easier for younger players to settle in if they do make it to the full team.”

Before they can get that far, however, Valdes’ prodigies have to impress in the UAE, where they will take on Croatia, Morocco and Uzbekistan in Group C.

Setting their objectives for the world finals, which start on 17 October, he said: “We’re looking to improve and we’re going there with the idea that we can go a lot farther.”

Time will tell if the Panamanians and their forward-thinking coach can do just that.

Chevanton pens short-term QPR deal

QPR have signed Uruguayan striker Javier Chevanton on a three-month contract to boost their injury-hit forward line.

The 33-year-old, whose arrival is subject to international clearance, was released by Serie B club Lecce at the end of last season, bringing to an end his third spell with the Italian outfit.

Chevanton was capped 22 times by his country between 2001 and 2008, scoring seven times, and manager Harry Redknapp has called on him to step into the void created by injuries to Bobby Zamora and Andrew Johnson.

"With the injuries we´ve had to Bobby and AJ, we´re really short of options in that department," Redknapp told the Championship club´s official website.

"Javier has spent time with us and integrated into the group very well.

"He arrives with a good pedigree and gives us a much-needed extra option in attack."

The former Monaco forward´s contract will run until December 24 and he is looking forward to making an impact in English football.

"I am very happy to be here, working with a good manager like Harry Redknapp, for a team which is currently top of the Championship with huge ambitions to return to the Premier League," he said.

"I am really looking forward to the challenge of playing in England. I have scored goals all around Europe and I am confident I can continue that record with QPR.

Riquelme está listo para volver

BUENOS AIRES --Juan Román Riquelme, el capitán y símbolo de Boca Juniors que se apresta para reaparecer el domingo ante Quilmes luego de un mes parado por lesión, reguló las cargas de trabajo en la práctica del miércoles y participó de los ejercicios físicos, pero no en los de definición.

En ese contexto, Riquelme, con una lesión muscular desde el 25 de agosto pasado, quiere sumar minutos el domingo ante Quilmes por la novena fecha del Torneo Inicial y ganar ritmo futbolístico para llegar en forma al superclásico de la décima jornada en la cancha de River, y por eso se cuida de no sufrir una recaída.

El crack xeneize, quien si juega el domingo alcanzará los 194 partidos en "La Bombonera" e igualará a una gloria boquense como Silvio Marzolini, entrenó en el Complejo Pedro Pompilio durante la sesión de ejercicios físicos y se lo notó muy recuperado del problema muscular que sufrió ante Estudiantes en la cuarta fecha.

En tanto, el defensor Daniel Cata Díaz, desgarrado en el partido ante Racing de la séptima fecha, sorprendió con ligeros trotes y ejercicios con pelota, con la intención de reaparecer también en el superclásico, algo difícil pero no imposible.

Por su parte, el resto del plantel trabajó dividido en dos grupos por el DT Carlos Bianchi, quien insistió con tareas de definición, y de centros con despeje y posterior remate al arco.

En un grupo se alistaron Fernando Gago, Emmanuel Gigliotti, Pablo Ledesma, Claudio `Chiqui` Pérez, Leandro Paredes, Nahuel Zárate, Franco Cángele, Claudio Riaño, Matías Caruzzo y Joel Acosta.

¿Passarella lanzó su candidatura?

BUENOS AIRES -- Cuando parecía que un grupo de allegados y directivos cercanos a Daniel Passarella había lanzado una página web con la postulación del actual presidente de River Plate para la reelección en la contienda electoral que se va a desarrollar en las primeras semanas de diciembre de este año, la cuestión se complicó y terminó en una interna política.
Esta mañana se dio la aparición de la web www.passarella2013.com, un sitio que no fue oficializado por el "Kaiser" en el que aparecen "11 pilares de gestión", la cara de algunos directivos como Daniel Mancusi, Diego Turnes y Omar Solassi, quienes negaron tener participación en la idea, y una frase que advierte "nacido para defender a River".

De todos modos, las voces oficiales salieron a desmentir que esa página sea propia, y aclararon que las propuestas presentadas no corresponden a la plataforma electoral de Passarella.

De hecho, varias de las consignas parecen coincidir con las que presentó otro candidato, Rodolfo D´Onofrio.

Sin embargo, algunos especulan que el sitio de Internet está relacionado con la idea que no se le provoque una diáspora de votos hacia los otros candidatos en la asamblea de socios de fines de octubre, donde deben aprobar el balance económico financiero.
