Soccer roundup: O’Higgins moves to top of Chile’s AperturaUniversidad Católica and Cobreloa drop points, O’Higgins registers a two point lead and Universidad de Chile moves to fourth as Primera División reaches halfway point.
O’Higgins 1-0 Huachipato O’Higgins claimed top spot in the league with its fourth straight win of the season over last-placed Huachipato on Friday. A second-half goal from midfielder Pablo Herández saw the home team pull away from early season pace-setters Universidad Católica and Cobreloa — neither of whom registered a win over the weekend — blowing the title race wide open.
Despite coming agonizingly close to winning the Apertura in 2012, O’Higgins has never claimed a first division title in Chilean soccer. Club manager Eduardo Berizzo refused to speculate over history making, however, as he felt the win — captured via a controversial penalty — was not a just reflection of a match in which his team played poorly.
“We have our feet on the ground — our position in the table does not distract us,” Berizzo said to press after the match. “Being top is exciting, but it means nothing — when you play badly, you play badly. Just because you’re leading doesn’t mean you’re performing well.”
Berizzo praised his defense that continued the fine form that warded off Católica last weekend, though was damning of an attack that largely failed to threaten one of the weakest teams in the league.
The first of O’Higgins’ players to misfire was forward Carlos Escobar, who was presented with a gilt-edged opportunity early on in the first half. Released in the box by a ball over the top of Huachipato’s backline, Escobar was unmarked and under no pressure from goalkeeper Nery Veloso when he dragged his shot wide of the left upright.
Escobar did much better with a header minutes later, though Veloso flew through the air to deny the striker a chance of redemption.
Huachipato hit back with a volley from José Contreras that was well saved by the ever-dependable Paulo Garcés, and the keeper was on hand again to block a vicious, dipping long ranger from midfielder Mauricio Yedro.
Midway through the second-half, Huachipato defender Carlos Labrin leapt into a 50/50 challenge on the edge of the box with striker Francisco Pizarro. The exchange left the latter writhing on the ground and the referee pointed to the spot, though the visitors spiritedly contested the decision, claiming that neither serious contact had occurred nor had the event taken place within the technical area. The referee was unmoved, Huachipato manager Jorge Pellicer was banned from the touchline for dissent, and midfielder Pablo Hernández scored with the penalty.
O’Higgins took control of the game for the first time, and almost doubled its lead through striker Osman Huerta, though he hit the woodwork when it looked easier to score, and the game finished 1-0.
A stern test away to Universidad de Chile awaits the league leaders next weekend, while Huachipato will try and lift itself from the bottom of the table at home to Palestino.
Iquique 2-2 Universidad CatólicaUniversidad Católica missed a chance to reclaim the top spot in the league against Iquique on Sunday, relinquishing a two goal lead in the final four minutes of injury time. Aside from claiming the team was tired after its Copa Sudamericana fixture in Brazil last week, manager Martín Lasarte was at a loss to explain how his side could throw away two points so easily after dominating throughout.
“This is the kind of game that could cost us later on,” Lasarte said to press after the match. “It’s our fault, it was a fools’ loss … we made some childish errors in the final minutes.”
Católica striker José Muñoz got the scoring underway in the 22nd minute after his low shot from range took a small deflection past Rodrigo Naranjo into the net. Iquique’s Santiago Romero almost levelled the score six minutes from the break, though winger Michael Ríos was on the line to prevent the midfielder´s header from going in.
Just before the halftime whistle, Católica striker Ismael Sosa’s tap-in was the culmination of a blistering counter attack, and the team settled in during the second half for what looked to be a routine Católica victory. Two set pieces in the 90th and 94th minute would change all that.
Iquique loaded the box for a free kick from the right, and striker Gerson Martínez was completely unmarked when he rose to nod in a header. Four minutes later, another dead ball delivered from within Iquique’s own half wriggled through the Católica defense to find strike veteran Manuel Villalobos who finished coolly beyond Cristopher Toselli.
The draw sees Iquique drop to seventh in the table.
Palestino 2-0 Cobreloa Cobreloa gave up its spot at the top of the league Saturday, suffering goals against and red cards in both halves at Palestino. The loss sees an end to Cobreloa’s incredible 26-match unbeaten run across all competitions. Coach Jorge García was withering in his appraisal of referee Carlos Ulloa, who along with the cards awarded a penalty against the visiting team.
“We were harmed by the awarding of non-existent fouls,” García said to Prensafútbol after the match. “The referee helped Palestino today. I have spoken with the Cobreloa director and we will take action through the ANFP (Chilean soccer’s governing body). It is sad to lose not against Palestino, but against the referee.”
The first controversial decision came midway through the second half, when Cristián Suárez was harshly judged to have handled in the box when it looked nigh on impossible for him to have moved his arm out of the way of a flick from forward Roberto Gutiérrez.
Keeper Luciano Palos duly saved the spot kick, though could do nothing to prevent Palestino striker Diego Cháves’ confident drive in the 39th minute. Two minutes later, midfielder René Lima was given a questionable red card for a challenge on Palestino’s Pablo Tamburrini, and García’s hackles were raised once again when Cristián Gaitán was sent off on 62 minutes.
Defender Javier Capelli’s header in the 73rd doubled his team’s lead, though Cobreloa was given a way back into the game soon after, when the team was awarded a penalty after another curious handball decision by Ulloa. García had no problem with this call of course, though he surely had words with Jonathan Chávez after the striker ballooned the ball over the bar.
The win takes Palestino to sixth in the league.
Unión Española 0-2 Universidad de Chile After last week’s Copa Sudamericana disappointment, Universidad de Chile registered its second consecutive win in the Apertura against defending champion Unión Española on Sunday, and moves to fifth place and within five points of the top.
The match was far closer than the scoreline suggests, and “La U” relied on poor finishing from Española strikers Gustavo Canales and Sebastián Jaime as well as some resilient defending to maintain the clean sheet.
Defender Juan Ignacio Sills got the scoring underway in the 12 minute when he helped in a shot from playmaker Gustavo Lorenzetti. Canales then went inches wide with a freekick and later in the second half struck the post with a header, though “La U” clung on until injury time when young striker Patricio Rubio added a second with a tap-in.
Española sits 14th halfway through a truly dismal title-defending season.
Cobresal 3-1 Colo Colo Colo Colo’s nightmarish season continues, as the most successful club in Chilean soccer history slumped to its fifth defeat in six games against Cobresal on Saturday. The team now sits two places from bottom in the league.
Rumours of the departure of Gustavo Benítez are rife — claims have the manager close to resigning, while Colo Colo’s board of directors is apparently divided over Benítez’s future at the club.
Colo Colo started the match well enough, and striker Nicolás Canales scored with a header after just two minutes. The visiting side took complete control of the first half, though couldn’t find a way through Cobresal’s resolute backline.
The second half was an entirely different affair — Colo Colo simply capitulated, and Cobresal was merciless on the offensive. Striker Ever Cantero capitalized on some woeful defending to tap in his team’s first on the hour mark, and midfielder Mariano Néstro Torres’s rocket made it two in the 72nd minute.
Cobresal’s confidence was brimming, and ten minutes later Johan Muñoz thought he’d have a go from within his own half. The midfielder pumped it long, and the shot came off, sailing over the head of the hapless Justo Villar and into the net to end the scoring.
The win takes Cobresal to 8th in the league.
Universidad de Concepción 2-1 Audax ItalianoUniversidad de Concepción continues to punch above its weight, registering its second consecutive win against Italiano on Sunday. The newly promoted club is now fifth in the league.
Striker Diego Vallejos put Italiano ahead on the half hour mark when his shot trickled underneath an embarrassed Cristián Muñoz. The home side then launched a spirited fightback, though would have to wait until the 80th minute for an equalizer in the form of an Andrés Imperiale header. Five minutes later, striker José Luis Jiménez gave his team the win after coming out on top in a 12-yard box scramble.
Italiano sinks to 15th in the league.
Unión La Calera 1-1 Antofagasta Unión La Calera and Antofagasta shared the spoils in a mid-table matchup Saturday.
The home side had the slight edge over Antofagasta in a tight game, and scored first through a bullet from striker Rodrigo Gattas on 15 minutes. Antofagasta forward Juan Gonzalo Lorca tied up the game in the 67th minute. La Calera striker Leandro Venegas could have given his team the win with minutes to spare, though instead put forth his effort for miss of the season, hoofing the ball over the bar from three yards out.
Antofagasta is 10th and La Calera sits 13th in the table.
Rangers 0-3 ÑublenseA beautiful performance from midfielder Jonathan Cisternas helped Ñublense to its second straight league win against Rangers on Sunday. Having spent much of the season rooted to the bottom of the league, the minnows from the south now sit in 12th place.
The visitors went ahead early on when midfielder Mathías Riquero guided in a fine cross in the 4th minute. Rangers turned up the heat and came close three times before the break, with striker Pablo Vegetti guilty of a particularly shocking miss.
The second half was all Ñublense, and Jonathan Cisternas shone brightly, creating several chances and scoring twice from open play, with a technically astute curling effort in the the 60th and a strike in off the bar ten minutes later.
Rangers are second to last in the league.
Santiago Wanderers 3-0 Everton The derby match between seaside neighbours Everton and Wanderers is always a heated affair, though this matchup was especially cantankerous — five red cards were brandished as Valparaíso side Wanderers thrashed Viña del Mar’s Everton 3-0 on Sunday.
Marcos Sebastián Pol had a particularly colorful match. The Wanderers striker received a yellow card in the first half, before netting the opener in the 34th minute. Pol added another with a beautifully taken strike just after the break, though he then received a second yellow for kicking the corner flag in his celebration. The sending off evened the numbers however, as defender Alex Von Schwedler had been sent off earlier for leading with his elbow into a challenge for a header.
Wanderers midfielder Sebastián Méndez and Everton defender Orlando Gutiérrez where both given their marching orders after an altercation over a full blooded challenge on the right wing, and Everton’s Francisco Saavedra was sent off soon after that when the defender stamped on Wanderers striker Matías Donoso. Down to eight men, Everton could do little to prevent Wanderers pouring forward, and the side was lucky to concede just one more goal when fullback Óscar Opazo struck 15 minutes from time.
Wanderers sit 9th and Everton drop to 11th in the league.
