Alvarado, conforme con San Lorenzo


BUENOS AIRES -- Pablo Alvarado, defensor y capitán de San Lorenzo de Almagro, se mostró el viernes conforme con el presente del equipo y confiado para el encuentro del sábado ante Tigre, a las 20.15, por la décima fecha del Torneo Inicial.

"Sentimos que estamos haciendo un buen trabajo en cuanto a juego. El equipo siempre fue protagonista, lo que pasaba era que no se daban los resultado y fundamentalmente, de locales", explicó Alvarado.

Sobre Tigre, su rival del sábado, el defensor, de 27 años, comentó: "sabemos que van a venir a esperarnos y nosotros vamos a tener que contrarrestar esa propuesta. Ellos van a correr un riesgo y necesitamos encontrar el gol, que a veces se nos complica".

Alvarado sostuvo que se sienten "cómodos" jugando de locales, aunque la gente tiene "la imagen de los últimos dos partidos, en los que tuvimos un buen juego, y sentimos la ansiedad de todos por ganar en casa".

Además, el jugador admitió que "la realidad es que hoy Newell`s está un punto arriba y, si es así, es porque es el mejor".

Por otra parte, con respecto al Superclásico entre River y Boca, expresó: "Nosotros queremos que sea un empate, pero si tengo que dar una opinión personal prefiero que gane River".

Por último, Alvarado confió que, si el presidente Matías Lammens y el vice Marcelo Tinelli deciden presentarse a elecciones para continuar al frente del club, "tienen nuestro apoyo".

Guillermo: "Estamos más obligados"

BUENOS AIRES -- El DT de Lanús, Guillermo Barros Schelotto, afirmó el viernes que su equipo, tras la derrota de la jornada pasada ante River, está "más obligado a buscar el triunfo" ante Rosario Central, rival del lunes por la 10ma. fecha del Torneo Inicial, para volver a los "primeros puestos".

"Hay que dejar lo que pasó el domingo, habíamos hecho más para quedarnos con los tres puntos. Ahora, estamos más obligados a buscar el triunfo contra Central para seguir entre los primeros", expresó Barros Schelotto en conferencia de prensa.

"Lanús tendrá partidos importantes para mostrar su nivel, para ver si podemos estar en esa lucha por el campeonato", indicó Barros Schelotto en referencia a Central, Godoy Cruz de Mendoza, Colón de Santa Fe y San Lorenzo por la 10ma., 11ma., 11ra. y 12da. fecha del Inicial, respectivamente.

En cuanto a Rosario Central, el próximo rival, el ex delantero de Gimnasia La Plata y Boca Juniors opinó que enfrentarán a un equipo que es "irregular" en su juego, pero que tendrá el apoyo de su parcialidad, lo cual le otorgará "un plus" para intentar ganar el partido.

Por otra parte, Barros Schelotto, quien le deseó "lo mejor" a Boca de cara al Superclásico del domingo en el Monumental por su condición de ex jugador e ídolo xeneize, aseguró que no se opondrá a la convocatoria del defensor Víctor Ayala a la selección de Paraguay.

El jugador fue citado para la última y doble jornada de Eliminatorias Sudamericanas, que lo marginará del equipo granate por dos fechas del Inicial (ante Central y Godoy Cruz).

LA PRÁCTICA DEL VIERNES

El plantel de Lanús se entrenó en la mañana del viernes en el estadio, a puertas cerradas, donde realizaron una práctica de fútbol de 70 minutos.

El equipo titular igualó 1-1 ante los suplentes y ambas conquistas fueron anotadas por Oscar Benítez, quien en los primeros 35 minutos jugó para el equipo alternativo y luego lo hizo para los titulares.

La alineación principal que enfrentaría a Central formó con: Agustín Marchesín; Carlos Araujo, Paolo Goltz, Carlos Izquierdoz y Maximiliano Velázquez; Diego González, Leandro Somoza y Jorge Ortiz; Lucas Melano, Santiago Silva y Jorge Pereyra Díaz.

Barros Schelotto, quien no confirmó la formación aún, dispuso el ingreso de Benítez por Izquierdoz, lo cual motivó el cambio de esquema, con línea de tres en el fondo; y luego Cristian Chávez reemplazó a Pereyra Díaz.

El entrenador definirá el sistema táctico entre el sábado y domingo y también evaluará a Araujo, quien a pesar que formó parte del ensayo de fútbol, arrastra molestias en el tobillo derecho.

En tanto, el volante Lautaro Acosta, quien se recupera de un desgarro en la zona del pubis, tiene para 10 días más de recuperación.

Los dirigidos por Barros Schelotto retornarán el sábado a la práctica de fútbol, en horario matutino, mientras que el domingo realizarán un entrenamiento con pelota parada y luego del almuerzo partirán en micro rumbo a Rosario.

Lanús, que acumula 13 unidades en el torneo Inicial, visitará el lunes a Rosario Central (8), en el estadio Gigante de Arroyito, en el partido válido por la 10ma. fecha del torneo Inicial, que será arbitrado por Andrés Merlos, a partir de las 21.30.

Delfino: "De Ramón fue una chicana"

BUENOS AIRES -- Germán Delfino, el árbitro del superclásico del próximo domingo en River Plate, donde no habrá hinchas de Boca Juniors, advirtió el viernes que si "alguien" lo "presionara" se "replantearía seriamente seguir dirigiendo".

"Nunca alguien me presionó. Pero si esto pasara, me replantearía seriamente seguir dirigiendo", señaló Delfino en declaraciones al programa radial "Deportivo Télam".

"Lo de Ramón Díaz fue un chicana, porque tuve la mala fortuna de echarlo dos veces. Sin embargo es bienvenido lo que él dijo, porque otros se meten con la honestidad de uno y él no lo hizo. De todas formas considero que actué bien en su momento", resaltó.

Este será el segundo Superclásico que dirigirá Delfino (el anterior fue en la Bombonera) y asegura que quiere "disfrutarlo, porque el tiempo pasa muy rápido y uno no se da cuenta de todas las cosas lindas que está viviendo".

"Ahora llego con más experiencia que en el clásico anterior. Aprendí mucho. Ojalá pueda estar a la altura de las circunstancias", expresó.

"La verdad que el destino me puso en este lugar, porque yo no tengo mucha suerte con los bolilleros. De hecho también estaba ternado para el clásico de La Plata y quedé afuera", reconoció.

Diego Abal, que será el cuarto árbitro, era el otro candidato para este superclásico, mientras que Néstor Pitana se quedó afuera porque dirigirá el Mundial Sub 17.

"Cuando salgo a la cancha lo hago con absoluta libertad y cuando tomo una decisión no pienso en la camiseta. Si tengo que echar a alguien al minuto de juego, lo hago sin problemas", apuntó.

"También a mis asistentes les doy mucha libertad. Por ejemplo Hernán Maidana, que será el uno, me da instrucciones permanentemente. Me dice abrite, cerrate, retrocedé. Y Gustavo Rossi, que será el dos, también lo hace", explicó.

Delfino anticipó que ambos líneas y el propio Abal irán a almorzar a su casa antes del partido, "para ir preparando todo lo que vendrá después".

"Además tengo hinchada propia, que es mi familia. Ellos me siguen a todos lados y me respaldan como si fueran un equipo", confió.

"Y por si fuera poco, éste Superclásico tendrá un plus, ya que en los bancos de River y Boca van a estar Ramón Diaz y Carlos Bianchi, los dos mejores entrenadores del fútbol argentino", finalizó.

Ischia: "Estamos en fondo hace rato"

BUENOS AIRES -- El director técnico de Racing, Carlos Ischia, opinó que su equipo, sumergido en problemas institucionales y deportivos, no tocó "fondo" porque está en esa condición "hace rato", en la previa del partido ante Atlético de Rafaela.

"No creo que hayamos tocado fondo, estamos ahí hace rato. Hay que empezar a salir. Estamos en una situación incómoda y las cosas no salen bien", declaró Ischia en la conferencia que brindó en la sala de prensa del estadio Juan Domingo Perón.

Racing Club aún no ganó en lo que va del certamen, acumula dos unidades, sufrió el alejamiento del DT Luis Zubeldía y el cambio de presidente, con Víctor Blanco por Gastón Cogorno, que se produjo por la interna con el ex vicepresidente Rodolfo Molina.

Ischia, de 56 años, indicó que tanto el cuerpo técnico como los jugadores deben tener "autocrítica" si no obtienen los resultados que pretenden para no deslindar "responsabilidades" en la lucha por revertir la situación deportiva.

"Para que la gente empiece a creer en el equipo, el contagio va de adentro hacia afuera, pero tengo fe en los jugadores para empezar a salir", agregó.

LA PRÁCTICA DEL VIERNES

El plantel de Racing se entrenó en su estadio donde Ischia paró el probable equipo para recibir el domingo a los santafesinos: Sebastián Saja; José Luis Gómez, Fernando Ortiz, Matías Cahais y Ángel García; Bruno Zuculini y Agustín Pelletieri; Mario Regueiro, Mauro Camoranesi y Rodrigo De Paul; y Luciano Vietto.

Con este equipo, Ischia realizaría cuatro cambios con respecto a la alineación que perdió 3-0 ante Belgrano en Córdoba: García, Zuculini, Regueiro y Camoranesi por Claudio Migliónico, Rodrigo Battaglia, Luis Ibáñez y Roger Martínez.

Camoranesi, campeón del mundo con el seleccionado italiano de fútbol en el Mundial Alemania 2006, recuperado de un desgarro en el soleo de pierna derecha, retornará al equipo titular después de cinco meses.

Racing Club, que acumula dos unidades y tres derrotas consecutivas en el certamen, retornará mañana a los entrenamientos, en horario matutino, con vistas al partido del domingo ante Atlético de Rafaela por la 10ma. fecha del torneo Inicial.

Alonso: "El Super va a ser empate"

BUENOS AIRES -- Norberto Alonso, ídolo riverplatense si los hay, vaticinó que el Superclásico del próximo domingo entre River Plate y Boca Juniors "se va a jugar mucho en el mediocampo y va a terminar en empate".

"El Superclásico del domingo se va a jugar mucho en la mitad de la cancha y va a terminar en empate", pronosticó Alonso en una entrevista con el programa radial "Deportivo Télam".

"El hecho de que no haya público visitante no incide en un Superclásico, más allá de que el miedo escénico afecta a algunos más que a otros", destacó.

Alonso dice de sí mismo que el fútbol que practicó "identifica a River. Pero eso ya se terminó. Ahora no existen los sombreros ni los caños y hay que ganar como se pueda. Por eso no reniego de que Ramón Díaz se adapte a lo que tiene y el equipo juegue de contra si eso sirve para conseguir el resultado".

"Hoy el hincha de River va a esperar a Teófilo Gutiérrez, pero con Carlos Carbonero y Jonathan Fabbro ya perdió la paciencia", analizó.

"Ramón Díaz estuvo como seis meses insistiendo con Fabbro. Parecía que iba a traer al holandés Marco Van Basten y resulta que terminó trayendo a una carreta", fustigó.

"En cambio el jugador distinto que tiene del medio hacia delante es Manuel Lanzini. El es el pensante del equipo, el que desequilibra y el que ya demostró que no le pesa jugador un superclásico porque se la bancó en la Bombonera y con un gol", destacó.

Para el Beto los "puntos débiles de los dos equipos están en las defensas, y sobre todo en los laterales. River tiene salida por izquierda con Leonel Vangioni y menos marca, mientras que por la derecha, con Gabriel Mercado es al revés".

"Por eso a los volantes de Boca los va a tener que esperar en zona. Fernando Gago no lastima, pero con (Juan Román) Riquelme hay que tener más cuidado", advirtió.

"Pero en definitiva los dos equipos llegan a este partido en buen nivel, y aunque en los clásicos eso tiene una influencia relativa, siempre es más alentador para el espectáculo", concluyó.


DURO CONTRA PASSARELLA

El `10` por antonomasia de la historia moderna riverplatense, Norberto Alonso, afirmó que al presidente del club millonario Daniel Passarella "se le escapó la tortuga cuando se enfrentó con Julio Grondona, porque con eso mandó al equipo al descenso".

"A Passarella se le escapó la tortuga cuando cuestionó a Grondona en la propia AFA. Está loco. Solamente con él River se pudo haber ido al descenso. Con ningún otro presidente le hubiera pasado algo así. Yo no lo podía creer".

"River se fue al descenso, estuvo en la B Nacional, y esa es una mancha en la historia que no se borra más. Los hinchas no se olvidan y por eso Faniel no puede ir a la cancha, ya que lo insultan desde los cuatro costados", remarcó.

Alonso consideró que el "error que cometió Passarella de enfrentarse justo con Grondona, no lo puede cometer un tipo que supuestamente tiene calle. Uno sabe con quien hablar y no se puede ir contra el que decide".

"No sé si Passarella se va a presentar en las próximas elecciones. Seguramente evaluará si le dan los números en las encuestas previas. Pero yo estoy igual de cerca de Rodolfo D`onofrio que de Antonio Caselli (los otros dos precandidatos que están por encima del Kaiser en los sondeos previos)", avisó.

"Pero más cerca que nadie estoy de River. Tengo pendiente una participación activa en la vida de la institución. Me quiero morir dentro del club", demandó el Beto en el epílogo de la charla.

Unpredictability in the ´Clasico Nacional´

Information, statistics, details, and expectations say that there is no way this can be called "an unpredictable game." Nevertheless, this "Classic rivalry" is and always will be "an unpredictable game."

This is not about "assessing" how much better America is than Chivas. It is a different type of game, full of emotions, feelings, and strange vibes. The only thing we can be assured of is that the game will start with a score of zero-zero. The rest is unknown...

There is no overwhelming, tangible, or irrefutable proof that Chivas can compete this Saturday. The only thing we have is the hope that since this is the Clasico Nacional, that some other senses, sensations, and vibes come into play and that a team trailing another by 20 points in the Apertura 2013 table can transform into a different team and offer up some resistance. Chivas is not being asked to win this Clasico Nacional. It is only being asked to survive.

Numerical comparisons don´t fit here. It may be said, perhaps inappropriately, that one team is playing in the division, while the other is doing so at a horribly low level. Lately Chivas has been finding it hard to do anything: playing well, scoring goals, defending, and winning, above all winning. And although it is true that is has improved in relation to the crisis it has been going through in recent months, it does not seem ready to compete with a team that has been a standard of consistency throughout the season. America is the clear favorite.

However, the sport of soccer brings on strange events when you least expect it, such as when two very unequal teams square up against each other, as will happen on Saturday. Everything is related to the mental ability of the players, which can grow or dwindle depending on the situation and the conditions surrounding them. As far as it goes in soccer, America has everything it takes to take Chivas for a ride. Mentally speaking, Chivas has what it takes to survive on the field.

The scenario presented to us by Azteca Stadium for tomorrow´s game only gives us one sure fact: the game will start with a score of zero-zero. After the opening whistle, many circumstances will form part of and define the game. Chivas must improve defensively. Its captain Hector Reynoso celebrated his 33rd birthday last Thursday and it is clear that he is now in the process of counting his final hours of wearing the red and white shirt. We expect more from him, more than from Marco Fabian de la Mora, and we expect him to have more impact than Rafael Marquez and Aldo de Nigris. Chivas needs to play an almost perfect game. It needs to play in a way we haven´t seen in months. It needs an almost miraculous recovery in order to win in Azteca Stadium. Chivas needs to understand that scenarios such as the one on Saturday, and games against America can help it in radically speeding up its sanction period and return to the competitive place it has historically held in Mexican soccer.

There is a lot of space between the two teams in the league, but it is the Clasico Nacional and I am sure that Chivas will find ways to fight, compete, equalize, and above all, survive...

Four factors that make Super Clasico classic

When America and Chivas take the Azteca Stadium field on Saturday, it will likely be in front of the highest attendance for any club match anywhere in the world this weekend.

Yet Mexico’s biggest, most important game between Chivas and America is sporadically derided as an invention of television companies, hyping a game in search of ratings.

Certainly, for example, diehard fans of Chivas in Guadalajara would much rather get one over on local rivals Atlas than Mexico City´s Club America.

But while that might be the case, the defining fixture in Mexican soccer’s calendar contains plenty of intrigue, excitement and storylines for it to be considered one of the North American continent’s great clasicos.

Glamorous America versus all-Mexican grit

This is probably the defining feature of Mexico’s Clasico Nacional and the one that sets it apart from, say, River Plate-Boca Juniors or Barcelona-Real Madrid.

On the one hand, Chivas only play with Mexicans. On the other, America has a history and tradition of expensive imports, largely from South America.

Indeed, legend has it that when media mogul Emilio Azcarraga bought America in 1959, he planned to knock Chivas’ famous Campeonisimo team off its perch by bringing Brazilian and Argentine imports.

That meant the battle lines were drawn between the clubs and their differing philosophies have remained intact ever since.

Fan support

When America or Chivas play in places as far and wide as Tampico, Tuxtla Gutierrez or Tijuana, the chances are their fans will be in the majority. They are genuinely the ‘big two’ in terms of sheer quantity of fans, extending all the way into the United States.

Cruz Azul and Pumas are the only other two that come anyway near, but they pale in comparison to the fan base Chivas and America boast.

A caveat must be added that in Guadalajara, Chivas have struggled to fill Estadio Omnilife. But with the team in a rut, a stadium outside the city’s beltway and ongoing friction between fans and the ownership, it is quite easy to explain and should only be a temporary problem.

Equality between the teams

Granted, there have been wild swings from Chivas’ domination in the 1950s and ´60s to America taking over in the ´70s and ´80s. But the fact that both come into Saturday’s Clasico on 11 titles each does show the battle to reach the top of the pile is genuine.

It almost goes without saying that with Chivas in a slump and America bossing the league this season, it is Las Aguila who are currently favorites to get title number 12.

Capital versus province

As in many countries, there is friction and rivalry between the capital city and elsewhere, and Mexico is no different. All over the country, there is a perception that chilangos (slang for those from Mexico City) are a little different.

America -- owned by media giant Televisa -- is the representation of that all-powerful Mexico City, a giant that pumps streams of money into its team, plays in Estadio Azteca and whose fans proudly taunt their slogan “Hate me more.”

Then there is Chivas, who can be seen as a representation of Mexico’s provinces where, the theory goes, traditional values still hold and the world is somehow a little less cut-throat. It is perhaps no coincidence that Mexico’s strongest cultural symbols -- tequila, mariachi and charreria -- all hail from Guadalajara.

Confidence reigns as America heads into rivalry match against Chivas

MEXICO CITY -- Club America has never boasted a 20-point lead going into a Clasico against its biggest rival Chivas. How telling is this? Well, the Liga Bancomer MX dates to 1943, and European-style seasons were played until 1996. So up until the mid-´90s, there was always a chance America and Chivas would play each other with 25, 30 or even 35 matches under their belts.

The fact that only 11 games have been played in Apertura 2013 tells us how bad Chivas is and how good America has been. Despite playing a match fewer than 75 percent of the teams in the league, the current champs are first and hold a six-point lead over Leon, the team closest to them in the table. They´ve won eight in a row at home and are on pace to break the decade-old record in points over an entire season that they set in 2002.

On the other hand, Chivas also has played one fewer game than 14 teams within the Liga Bancomer MX. Los Rojiblancos have parlayed their current season into a grand total of eight points and one win. Despite firing manager Benjamin Galindo a month and a half ago, replacing him with Juan Carlos Ortega, they´ve yet to win a game since Galindo delivered a 1-0 win over Atlante on Aug. 4.

That´s right. Chivas will step into the Mexican Clasico on Saturday two months and one day removed from its last league win. They say form isn´t the determining factor in a rivalry match, and though we´ve seen many examples to warrant this, it´s hard to conceive a situation in which Chivas comes out victorious from the Estadio Azteca on Saturday.

“If they beat us, that´s the high point of their season; it´ll be saved,” said America striker Raul Jimenez last week during an event at the Estadio Azteca.

A win against Chivas six months ago in the Clausura 2013 famously propelled the team to the Apertura 2013 championship during a massive stretch at the end of the regular season that saw it win its 11th title and tie Chivas for the historic lead.

In that game, Jimenez scored both goals and became a bona fide star for a team that had been heavily reliant on his former strike partner, the deceased Christian Benitez. Now, Jimenez will bear the responsibility to deliver again, quickly removed from his status as the up-and-comer who stole the spotlight in the last meeting.

"These games are all about heart and who wants it more," Jimenez said.

To its credit, Chivas has shown heart over its last set of league matches, crawling back from probable defeat to draw against Tijuana and Atlas in recent games. Under Ortega, the team has shown bits and pieces of magic on offense, but in consistency and talent, it is still lacking.

Knowing full well that pride and a psychological boon are at stake against America, Chivas will likely throw caution to the wind and focus all of its effort on winning at the Estadio Azteca. Yet even with the special atmosphere surrounding the proceedings this week, a winner has probably never been easier to call prior to the matchup.

Club America has changed to winning ways

The statistics pay tribute to America, just like its performance on the field.

Against Xolos, with six changes in the lineup, America earned its eighth consecutive win in the Azteca, and with 28 points confirmed what it has had since last weekend: the ticket to qualifying to the Liguilla playoffs.

The team beat Xolos 2-0, but the score could have been outrageous. What is important is that even with those six changes, America´s performance did not suffer.

We have already reviewed the statistics: the team has the best defensive and offensive indices; the best efficiency percentage, and the best goal difference even with the pending match against Tigres.

An interesting detail: Miguel Herrera has used 20 players in these 11 games in the Apertura. Less out of necessity, than out of strategy. But he has also selected those players that gave their all during the week in order to be taken into account, and even supposed starting players have had to turn their shirts over to others.

There are coaches who complain that the team has not repeated a lineup in the tournament, and they use that as an excuse. Strange, because in rotating players, Miguel Herrera has found the excuse to not depend on any single individual and to consolidate the team, changing the lineups as he sees fit.

Herrera has even put Rubens Sambueza in check: with three warnings and one expulsion, Sambueza is the most undisciplined player on the Aguilas team, which furthermore is the most well-mannered team in the tournament.

But note: this sure is interesting since ´Piojo´ Herrera in fact used to be known as the manager who was eternally in conflict with hissing spectators and his assistants, and who lived on the verge of being expelled. His change of behavior has been exemplary for the group. This week, Miguel Herrera, in a chat with Raza Deportiva on ESPN Deportes Radio explained the new policy towards booing spectators, and focused his attention on the team project.

Herrera explained that he does not want there to be a hint of any single individual wanting to be the champion; he does not want the team to risk lowering its guard; and therefore, he will keep the team´s commitments in the Concacaf Champions League, with the hope of playing in the 2014 Club World Cup.

We told Herrera a few weeks ago that it was already boring to talk with him. And he roared with laughter at the explanation.

It was much more interesting when America made mistakes, or the referees helped the team out, or when it broke out in conflict with hissing spectators, or the opponents, or the stands. Or even when Herrera himself went for a colleague’s jugular, or when players challenged him because he had taken them out of the game.

The closest to that was the row that involved, according to witnesses in Torreon, President Ricardo Pelaez and Assistant Santiago Banos, against the Portuguese manager Caixinha. In the end, things calmed down.

Today, America is betraying its own doctrine. That "Hate me more" that is its creed, its bravado, its discontent, its direct challenge to rivals, no longer applies.

This America devotes itself to playing soccer. And to playing it well. To driving the stands wild with enthusiasm – and it will do so when it hosts Chivas on Saturday. Chivas in turn knows, despite denying it, that a win would get it out from under the eye of the critics and would bring some consolation to its horrible season.

Yes, America has ceased to be the America of scandals, to become an almost serious, almost formal, almost exemplary team.

And the unanimous words of praise, that in the end are just hints and tinges of recognition, do not jibe with the team that was once viewed askance, as the troublemaker, the braggart, the one that was always looking for a fight with its thuggish attitude.

In the end, America is sending a message of a different way to plan and to seek to fulfill goals. And it doesn’t matter if the team´s non-soccer affairs get boring, or that the hate me more is now more of a motto than a bigmouth´s way of life.
