Boca joy in El Monumental

Boca Juniors scored another famous victory in El Monumental yesterday evening thanks to Emanuel Gigliotti’s first half goal. Both sides had chances to add more but River, particularly, were guilty of profligacy. Ramon Diaz maintains his side were the “better team” but their second half performance was a little flat. The result leaves Boca 5 points clear of the their old rivals and just 4 behind leaders Newell’s.

The Estadio Monumental is becoming a rich hunting ground for Boca front man, Emanuel Gigliotti having netted there on 3 previous occasions for Atletico Tucuman, All Boys and Colon. Adding the winner in the Super Clasico to that list is impressive and another match winning performance since his big move to Boca bodes well.

The match was always going to be decided by fine margins and there were other chances that could have added to Gigliotti’s solitary strike.

There were chances at either end before the 22nd minute when Gigliotti got in front of Jonathan Maidana to poke Juan Manuel Martinez’s cross past Marcelo Barovero.

What will disappoint River fans is the second half performance when trailing against their bitter rivals. There were chances and Orion’s post was struck on two occasions but there was not the prolonged pressure or intensity that one might expect.

Boca were able to hold on with relative ease and celebrated on the pitch, as if it was a cup final, much to the annoyance of Ramon Diaz.

The River Manager obviously saw things a little differently and stressed that “the best side did not win” and “we showed that we are great.”

This is a difficult case to argue when the game itself was evenly contested and River now find themselves well off the pace in the championship. A defeat next week against Newell’s will end all hopes of another title.

Ischia walks after just 5 games as Racing lose again

Things continue to get worse for Racing Club, after the worst start to a season since the short championship format began, Carlos Ischia has resigned after overseeing just 5 games. Perhaps a doomed appointment from the start the veteran coach has not been able to make any improvements and yesterday’s loss to Atletico Rafaela in Avellaneda was the final straw. Diego Vera’s first half penalty was enough for the win and leaves Racing with 8 defeats and 2 draws from their 10 games in this year’s Inicial.

Another desperately poor performance was rewarded with another defeat last night in Avellaneda. As a result, Racing are now looking for a new manager once again, only weeks after axing Luis Zubeldia.

After the somewhat disastrous attempt at replacing Zubeldia there is significant pressure on new President, Victor Blanco.

An early front runner it appears is Antonio Mohamed, who left his post as Hurucan Manager, just last week. His time at his beloved Hurucan has been poor but he impressed while in Mexico with Tijuana.

The issue Racing had last time was their first choices declining the offer so they will be keen to avoid a repetition of that.

The other names currently in the mix are Rodolfo Arruabarrena, the hugely experienced, Reinaldo Merlo and even Caruso Lombardi.

Any one taking over would want some guarantees from the board as the club appears to be in complete disarray at present.

Bernardez: Honduras is united

SAN PEDRO SULA, Honduras -- Honduras started its preparations for the last two matchdays of the CONCACAF Hexagonal on September 30 with a small group of players.

As the rest of the squad gathers in San Pedro Sula, head coach Luis Fernandez Suarez will be sure to have them fully focused on a single objective: securing a second straight trip to the World Cup finals.

The Catrachos currently sit third in the final-round table with 11 points and hold destiny in their own hands. Four points out of the remaining six will guarantee them a place in Brazil next year regardless of the results obtained by fourth-place Panama and fifth-place Mexico.

First, though, three points are at stake when Costa Rica visits the Estadio Olimpico Metropolitano. It will be the fourth meeting this year in three different competitions between the Central American powerhouses. The Ticos won the first two and Honduras the most recent at the CONCACAF Gold Cup. Each encounter was tightly contested, all ending by the same 1-0 score.

“It is going to be a difficult game, they are going to come in here wanting to beat us, but for me, this is a great opportunity to give everything to qualify,” said defender Victor Bernardez.

The initial days of camp were marked by a keen emphasis on physical conditioning. That elevated level of intensity has created a bonding effect on all involved.

“These games are ones nobody wants to lose,” added Bernardez. “We have to play against many things, but there is a united and mature group here.”

In order to cultivate unity, Suarez has been writing messages on the team’s practice shirts and balls to motivate the players and remind them that they are fighting for each other. Bernardez believes it is a nice touch by the Colombian and that it will strengthen everyone’s resolve.

“Over the long course of qualifying that’s taken place, he (Suarez) asks that we have a sense of togetherness and of the many things that are important to achieve our objective,” noted the San Jose Earthquakes star.

Realizing that mission – especially against rival Costa Rica – will be a challenge. For Bernardez and his teammates, however, doing it together makes the journey even more meaningful.

Cerro Porteño could use “La Olla” but the hooligans can´t enter for three months

The Sports Court ordered the APFI to rescind the provisional sanction hanging over the "General Pablo Rojas" stadium, better known in the footballing world by the nickname "La Olla", of club Cerro Porteño, but at the same time increased the sanction to the banning of hooligans from the stadium for three months.

The Paraguayan Football Association, in conjunction with the National Secretariat of Sports and State authorities, is committed to finding solutions to the problem of violence on the pitch and to this end maintains weekly meetings involving different sectors directly linked to football clubs such as presidents as well as representatives of the police and the prosecution.

In this respect the president of the APF and 1st Vice President of CONMEBOL, lawyer Juan Angel Napout, said, "This is a task that will take time but we are determined to achieve the best possible results. There are many points that should be taken into account when analyzing this issue and we will try to do this with all sectors that have to do with football."

Ex-tennis player and current sports minister Victor Manuel Pecci said that "working constantly and with everyone doing their part, we will achieve the results we are looking for."

Colombian James Rodriguez begins to justify his price

James Rodriguez, author of two assists in Monaco´s win on Saturday against Saint-Etienne (2-1), is starting to justify the 45 million that the club paid for him. He has been adapting to the new surroundings and even was critized by coach Claudio Ranieri.

Discovered by French audiences last season in the confrontation between Porto and Paris Saint-Germain, in the Champions League, the Colombian striker had not proved anything since arriving in Monaco last summer.

Protected since arriving by coach Claudio Ranieri, the Italian coach changed tactics this week and publicly criticized him and concedes that there is "a mentality problem."

"He thinks like an attacker, but he also must defend. When he doesn´t play for a while he will start to understand," said Ranieri, trying to put pressure on the player.

A starter against Saint-Etienne, the talented lefty responded with a good match. "I´m happy because Monaco has won, happy to have been able to make two decisive passes," said the player of 22 years.

The Colombian didn´t want to enter into a controversy over the statements made by his coach. Asked about the harshness of the criticism James replied, "Hard? No. If he sees something it is because he has knowledge of the game. I respect him. One should be able to speak for oneself."

"Here the football is difficult, but gradually I will crease my level of play. Step by step I will become the James of Porto" insisted the striker.

He didn´t start off on the right foot when he came to the Principality. Injured in June in a Colombia match against Argentina, James Rodriguez had his preseason disrupted. But he did play in the qualifiers scroing a goal against Ecuador and playing all 90 minutes against uruguay.

James returned to Monaco fatigued and Ranieri warned that the player would not be fit until mid-October. And so it has been.

But neither he nor the club are too worried, knowing that he does not usually start the season well and knowing that the player´s intention is to get in great shape for the World Cup in Brazil.

James also has protection in the locker room, namely compatriot Falcao as well as Joao Moutinho at Porto.

"With time James will feel better. One should not forget that he was injured, which prevented him having a good start. He works well and gradually he will adapt," said Falcao.

"He is a player of immense ability. I´m sure he will be crucial for us this season," he added.

Despite criticism, Ranieri is aware they have a diamond in the rough. "He´s a crack. When he has the ball something good is going to happen. I´m convinced that he will score 10 goals this season," the coach predicts.
