Peñarol names Jorge Goncalvez as new coach
Peñarol, current Uruguayan champions, appointed Jorge Goncalves on Sunday as their new coach after Diego Alonso tendered his resignation owing to the team´s poor results in the 2013 Apertura.
The new coach, who was leading the Peñarol´s youth team, was presented Sunday night.
"I was always very good about being at a club fulfilling any function. I know this is a role with more responsibility," he said, hoping to improve the poor performance shown so far by Peñarol, which after the opening six rounds has one win, two draws and three defeats.
"I think winning all of our remaining games will at least put a scare in a few teams," said Goncalves nevertheless.
Goncalves is a former Peñarol player who won the Copa Libertadores in 1987 and the Uruguayan Championship in 1986 and in 1997
The coach will begin his work on Monday with the advantage of having two weeks to prepare the team for the game against El Tanque Sisley. The next week is free for all clubs because of the World Cup qualifiers.
Diego Alonso had arrived at the start of the season after the departure of Jorge Da Silva, who resigned after leading Peñarol to the 2012-2013 Uruguayan Championship, a win that kept their rivals, Nacional, from getting a three-peat .
But his romance with the ´aurinegros´ was short lived as the team was eliminated early in the Copa Sudamericana, in the first round at the hands of Chilean club Cobreloa, and had a disastrous start to the Apertura.
