Peñarol names Jorge Goncalvez as new coach

Peñarol, current Uruguayan champions, appointed Jorge Goncalves on Sunday as their new coach after Diego Alonso tendered his resignation owing to the team´s poor results in the 2013 Apertura.

The new coach, who was leading the Peñarol´s youth team, was presented Sunday night.

"I was always very good about being at a club fulfilling any function. I know this is a role with more responsibility," he said, hoping to improve the poor performance shown so far by Peñarol, which after the opening six rounds has one win, two draws and three defeats.

"I think winning all of our remaining games will at least put a scare in a few teams," said Goncalves nevertheless.

Goncalves is a former Peñarol player who won the Copa Libertadores in 1987 and the Uruguayan Championship in 1986 and in 1997

The coach will begin his work on Monday with the advantage of having two weeks to prepare the team for the game against El Tanque Sisley. The next week is free for all clubs because of the World Cup qualifiers.

Diego Alonso had arrived at the start of the season after the departure of Jorge Da Silva, who resigned after leading Peñarol to the 2012-2013 Uruguayan Championship, a win that kept their rivals, Nacional, from getting a three-peat .

But his romance with the ´aurinegros´ was short lived as the team was eliminated early in the Copa Sudamericana, in the first round at the hands of Chilean club Cobreloa, and had a disastrous start to the Apertura.

Peru travels to Buenos Aires for their qualifying match against Argentina

The Peru national team traveled Sunday night to Buenos Aires to face Argentina next Friday in their penultimate match of the South American qualifiers. Peru is already eliminated.

Coach Sergio Markarian and his coaching staff departed from Lima with 15 players who ply their trade in Peru.

"I hope to get a chance and take it. The idea is to finish strong in these qualifiers. I want to show my game and play well in the remaining matches," said striker Irven Avila of Sporting Cristal to the Depor newspaper.

The FPF has arranged for players who play in Europe and other South American countries to go directly to Buenos Aires, where they will join the delegation of local tournament players.

Among the strikers called Claudio Pizarro (Bayern Munich, Germany), Paolo Guerrero (Corinthians, Brazil) and defender Juan Vargas (Fiorentina, Italy) stand out.

The Inca team comes for the match against Argentina on Friday, October 11 in Buenos Aires with six players suspended for yellow card accumulation. The players who are suspended are starting goalkeeper Raul Fernandez, defenders Carlos Zambrano, Yoshimar Yotún, Luis Advincula and midfielders Carlos Lobaton and Rinaldo Cruzado.

To this is added Jefferson Farfán (Schalke 04, Germany) who is out through injury.

Markarian summoned 29 players (14 who play abroad and 15 locally) to face Argentina and Bolivia.

Peru will welcome Bolivia to Lima on Tuesday, October 15 in a match that will be played behind closed doors abiding by FIFA sanctions after fans violently attacked Argentine referee Patricio Loustau, who directed the match between Peru and Uruguay on Sept. 6.

Argentina leads the table with 29 points followed by Colombia (26), Chile (24), Ecuador (22), Uruguay (22), Venezuela (19), Peru (14), Bolivia (11) and Paraguay (11).

Chile is playing well says coach of Colombia before their qualifying clash

Néstor Pekerman knows that their next rival Chile is playing their best football right now.

"We´re going to make every last effort to be in the World Cup. Chile is one of the toughest rivals and now they are playing well," said Pekerman on arriving to the city of Barranquilla, where the team will be training for the game against Chile on Friday, October 11.

Colombia is in second place in the qualifiers with 26 points, behind only Argentina who has already qualified for the WC with 29 points.

Thus, Colombia with a win or draw against Chile will book their place in the World Cup.

Chile, with 24 points, is in third place and is followed by Ecuador and Uruguay with 22 points, with Ecuador in fourth place with a goal difference.

In the last round on October 15, Colombia face already eliminated Paraguay in Asuncion.

Argentine Primera Division Wrap: Newell´s stretch lead

Newell´s Old Boys extended their lead at the top of the Argentine Primera Division to three points after a 2-0 win at Quilmes.

Former Liverpool star Maxi Rodriguez opened the scoring in the 37th minute before laying on the assist for Diego Mateo´s strike on 56 minutes.

The victory means Newell´s Old Boys move to 23 points, one win clear of San Lorenzo, who could only manage a goalless draw at home against Tigre.

Arsenal, who is level on points with San Lorenzo, secured a 1-0 win at Colon to maintain their record as the division´s only unbeaten side.

Striker Julio Furch scored the only goal of the game in the 77th minute that condemned Colon to their fifth consecutive loss in the league.

Racing Club extended their winless run in all competitions to 12 as they went down by a single goal at home against Atletico Rafaela.

A penalty from Diego Vera secured the points for Rafaela, as Racing Club´s fans voiced their displeasure at their team at the final whistle with the Buenos Aires-based club bottom of the division with only two points from 10 games.

Olimpo snatched a point against Estudiantes as they salvaged a 1-1 draw with a 90th minute equaliser.

Defender Matias Sarulyte´s last-gasp goal cancelled out Estudiantes subsitutute Carlos Auzgui´s 54th minute strike.

In the Superclasico derby, Boca Juniors held on to a 1-0 win away to River Plate.

Both teams have endured mixed starts to the season but Emmanuel Gigliotti´s 23rd minute effort could kick start Boca´s season.

Two second-half goals propelled Godoy Cruz to a 2-0 triumph over All Boys.

In other matches, Belgrano earned a hard-fought 3-1 win at Argentinos Juniors, Gimnasia La Plata overcame Velez Sarsfield 2-1 and Rosario Central leaped out of the relegation zone after a 2-1 victory against Lanus.

Peruvian Primera Division Wrap: Real Garcilaso lose again

Group A-leaders Real Garcilaso have continued their poor run of form in the Peruvian Primera Division, going down 2-1 at lowly Pacifico.

Pacifico´s Mauro Cantoro delighted the home fans as he gave his side a shock lead on 67 minutes before Jaime Huerta looked to have salvaged a point for Garcilaso five minutes from time.

But there was further drama as Cantoro completed his brace from the penalty spot in the 92nd minute to ensure Garcilaso have only been victorious in one of their last seven matches.

After being runaway leaders for most of the Peruvian league campaign, Garcilaso have had their lead in Group A whittled down to only two points, with last year´s champions Sporting Cristal hot on their tail.

Cristal could have gone top with a win over Melgar but were held to a 0-0 draw and could rue the opportunity later in the season.

Juan Aurich has won five of their last six games after a 5-0 thrashing of Leon de Huanuco.

Despite being out of contention for domestic honours, Aurich were propelled by doubles from Roberto Ovelar and Roberto Merino, with the sending off of Huanuco´s Carlos Solis in the 59th minute helping contribute to the home side´s victory.

Cesar Vallejo kept their slim title hopes alive with a 3-0 win over Alianza Lima.

The victory elevated Vallejo to third position, five points behind second-placed Cristal.

In other matches, Victor Rossel scored a hat-trick as Union Comercio defeated Sport Huancayo 3-1, Cienciano overcame Universidad San Martin 1-0 and UTC Cajamarca clinched victory against Inti Gas by a solitary goal.

The match between Universitario and Jose Galvez was postponed.

Klinsmann demands another gear from USA

Jürgen Klinsmann has demanded the United States step up in their last two World Cup qualifiers despite having already booked a spot in Brazil.

The USA´s head coach has already switched his focus to Brazil 2014 and, while Klinsmann´s team are assured of a berth at next year´s World Cup finals, the 49-year-old German is keen to see his players improve in their qualifiers versus Jamaica and Panama over the next week.

If the USA win their last two World Cup qualifying matches, they will top CONCACAF´s fourth round and Klinsmann believes that will give his team plenty of confidence at next year´s tournament.

"Once you achieve the goal to be qualified you understand right away that now the next higher level is waiting for us," Klinsmann said.

"The World Cup is obviously a couple of levels higher up than qualifying even if it´s not an easy thing to go through.

"The benchmark now in the World Cup is just far higher so everything we do now prepares us for the World Cup, whatever we do in camp these few days together set the tone towards the summer of 2014 and therefore it is important that the players understand it is serious business that we deal with."

The USA will host Jamaica in Kansas City on Friday before they travel to Panama on Tuesday.
