Boca Juniors Sign Deal With The Simpsons, Make Me Wonder Why I Bother…

…writing about this shit.

I mean, honestly. As if it weren’t bad enough that plenty of people still think this show, which hasn’t been any good for—what?—a decade or so at least now, is the greatest thing ever.

Boca Juniors signed a contract with 20th Century Fox on Friday, confirming that they have absolutely no dignity whatsoever will be allowed to sell Simpsons merchandise in their club shop. T-shirts and posters of the world’s favorite yellow animated family wearing Boca kits, lifting trophies, defending with ten outfield players on the edge of their own penalty box… you get the idea.

That’ll make River Plate fans jealous, right?!

Boca are the second South American club to agree to this ridiculous tie-in (Corinthians of Brazil were the first), whilst European giants Barcelona, Porto, Juventus and both Milan sides—A.C. Milan and Internazionale—have also signed up previously. If you’ve always wanted a picture of Homer wearing a Boca shirt then frankly, you could have taken a stroll to most Argentine street markets and found one. But you’ll be able to buy an official one with a Nike logo on it from some time in 2014. Rejoice.

Oh, and if you’re hispanophone and reading this, can I just say that however much you say it, their voices don’t sound better in the Spanish-language version? Thanks.

U.S. makes roster changes before Panama WCQ

CHICAGO – Head coach Jurgen Klinsmann has made multiple changes to his roster in advance of the United States’ last match of 2014 World Cup Qualifying against Panama on Tuesday.

Landon Donovan (ankle) and Jermaine Jones (knee) have been released due to injury concerns. Matt Besler and Tim Howard have also departed as part of a planned player rotation.

“Landon is still struggling with the ankle injury from a couple weeks ago, so he will go back to Los Angeles and try to get back to 100 percent,” said Klinsmann. “Jermaine’s case is more of a concern. His knee was bothering him all night but he battled through. It’s clear that the issue with his knee is something that should be taken care of right away so he can be 100 percent for Schalke and the National Team as soon as possible.”

After earning his 33rd-career shutout, Howard’s departure means Brad Guzan will play against Panama. Chicago Fire goalkeeper Sean Johnson replaces Howard on the roster and will serve as a backup.

“Brad Guzan has earned the opportunity to start against Panama,” Klinsmann commented. “He has been outstanding for Aston Villa all year, and he has been huge in the games he has played for us in World Cup Qualifying. As I said before, we have one of the best situations in the world when it comes to our goalkeepers.”

Defensively, Matt Besler is rejoining Sporting Kansas City and will not make the U.S. MNT’s trip to Panama.

“We wanted to get Clarence Goodson a game in one of the last two qualifiers, which is why we are now rotating Matt Besler out,” Klinsmann noted.

The United States sealed first place in the Hexagonal for the third-consecutive cycle following a 2-0 win against Jamaica on Oct.11 in Kansas City, Kansas. It completed the home campaign in the final round with a perfect 5-0-0 record, scoring eight goals and recording five shutouts.

FIFA World Cup Qualifying Preview: Paraguay v Colombia

Colombia will look to end a successful FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign on a good note when they take on Paraguay on Tuesday.

Jose Pekerman´s side sit second in South American qualifying group and sealed their spot at next year´s World Cup in Brazil with a stunning 3-3 draw against Chile on Friday.

Trailing 3-0 with just 25 minutes to go, Teofilo Gutierrez´s strike breathed life into a Colombia side playing in front of their home fans in Barranquilla.

And two late Radamel Falcao penalties saw them claim an unlikely point to clinch qualification and spark wild celebrations as Colombia reached the World Cup finals for the first time since 1998.

Key to Colombia´s qualification has been their terrific home form, which saw them win five matches in a row before the Chile draw.

They have not been as impressive on the road, winning just one of their last five away qualifiers, and Pekerman will demand an improvement on that against a struggling Paraguay.

Falcao´s brace against Chile took him to nine goals for the qualifying campaign – only Argentina´s Lionel Messi and Uruguay´s Luis Suarez have scored more – and he has been well supported by Gutierrez.

Although the likes of Jackson Martinez and Luis Muriel may get more attention, the 28-year-old forward from River Plate has scored six goals in qualifying.

In stark contrast to Colombia´s campaign has been Paraguay´s, with the nation set to miss their first FIFA World Cup since 1994.

Paraguay sit second-bottom, just a point above Bolivia, after posting just three wins in 15 matches.

They have failed to adequately replace former coach Gerardo Martino – who is now in charge of Barcelona – after he left in 2011.

Francisco Arce and Gerardo Pelusso were sacked during the ill-fated campaign and new coach Victor Genes has seen no dramatic signs of improvement.

Malaga forward Roque Santa Cruz has top scored for Paraguay with just three goals and they have leaked goals at the other end, conceding 29 in 15 matches.

Paraguay lost 5-2 to Argentina in their last home qualifier and will seek a response to that result, but Colombia will be in high spirits and are expected to finish their campaign on a high.

FIFA World Cup Qualifying Preview: Uruguay v Argentina

Uruguay host Argentina in their final FIFA World Cup qualifier having all but given up hope of reaching Brazil 2014 automatically.

Oscar Tabarez´s side missed the opportunity to climb into the top four of the CONMEBOL section when they lost 1-0 to Ecuador last Friday, and that result means they head into Tuesday´s game against the pool winners with only the faintest chance of automatic qualification.

Uruguay, who are already guaranteed to at least go into an intercontinental play-off by virtue of finishing fifth, must defeat Argentina convincingly while also hoping one of Chile and Ecuador - placed third and fourth respectively - win their meeting in Santiago handsomely.

The 2011 Copa America winners also had to rely on the play-off route to the 2010 finals, when they beat Costa Rica 2-1 over two legs.

Uruguay went on to reach the semi-finals in South Africa, and Tabarez has resigned himself to his side once again having to do things the hard way against Jordan, who beat Uzbekistan in their Asian play-off to reach the intercontinental stage.

"We´ve been putting information together because we recently saw that it was most probably we´d be going to Jordan," said the coach.

"There´s nothing impossible in football, but also there aren´t things which escape all logic."

Uruguay are sure to look to Luis Suarez for inspiration against their old rivals in Montevideo, with the Liverpool forward having scored 10 goals in qualifying so far.

That tally puts him joint top of the South American scoring charts with Argentina captain Lionel Messi, who will miss the clash due to a hamstring injury.

Napoli striker Gonzalo Higuain - who has been in superb form for Argentina throughout the campaign, scoring nine goals in 11 games - is also sidelined with a calf problem.

Midfielders Javier Mascherano and Fernando Gago are also both absent, with Argentina boss Alejandro Sabella likely to give some of his squad players an opportunity to impress after Friday´s 3-1 victory over Peru.

Uruguay have no new injury worries ahead of the encounter, but 14 of their squad, including Edinson Cavani and Maxi Pereira, are walking a disciplinary tightrope with being just one booking away from missing their next competitive fixture - likely to be the first leg against Jordan - through suspension.

Tabarez´s side will be confident of avoiding defeat at the Estadio Centenario, as they have not lost any of their seven home qualifiers during the campaign.

However, Argentina were the last team to beat them on their own patch in qualifying, as Mario Bolatti’s late goal was enough for a 1-0 success in October 2009

FIFA World Cup Qualifying Preview: Panama v United States

Panama face the United States in their final FIFA World Cup qualifying fixture with a slim chance of claiming a play-off place.

Julio Dely Valdes´ charges trail fourth-place Mexico by three points, meaning they have to beat the USA and hope Mexico lose away to Costa Rica.

That scenario appears unlikely, with Mexico still harbouring hopes of an automatic qualification berth from the CONCACAF section.

But with the United States already confirming their place in Brazil next year, Panama will be confident of an upset against Jurgen Klinsmann´s outfit.

If Panama are to secure an improbable intercontinental play-off with New Zealand they will have to arrest a run of four games without victory.

That included a 1-0 defeat to the United States in the CONCACAF Gold Cup final in July, but they will be well backed by the Estadio Rommel Fernandez Gutierrez support.

Panama´s hopes of a play-off spot were dealt a blow after they lost 2-1 to Mexico on Saturday.

Luis Tejada had cancelled out Oribe Peralta´s opener, but with just five minutes remaining Raul Jimenez notched a crucial winner.

The United States are already assured of their place as group winners, as they hold an unassailable lead over second-place Costa Rica.

Klinsmann´s team have lost just twice in nine outings in the CONCACAF group, and their latest success came with a 2-0 home success over Jamaica on Friday.

It took until the 77th minute to find the breakthrough as Graham Zusi netted before Jozy Altidore confirmed the win.

Panama´s task is made even more daunting by the USA´s recent form.

The United States have tasted defeat just once in 15 matches and head into the fixture in buoyant mood following Friday´s success.
