De Felippe suffers first defeat as Independiente boss

Independiente’s 6 match unbeaten run came to an end in Isidro Casanova as they lost 1-0 to Almirante Brown. A game which was in some doubt during the week over ticketing issues went ahead as planned and it was a great day for the locals of La Matanza, taking the scalp of one of Argentina’s biggest teams. Federico Carballo’s fierce first half strike gave Almirante the win and leaves El Rojo a long way off the pace in their bid to return to the Primera.

Earlier, Huracan returned to winning ways as they wait to announce new manager, Frank Kudelka. 6 without a win Huracan swept aside troubled Aldosivi to leave them in the relegation zone. Goals from Mauro Milano , Juan Arraya , Matias Defederico and Alejandro Romero Gamarra gave Huracan a much needed 4-1 win.

FIFA World Cup Qualifying Preview: Peru v Bolivia

Bolivia will look to lift themselves off the foot of the table in their final FIFA World Cup qualification match in Peru on Tuesday.

Xabier Azkargorta´s side have endured a disappointing campaign in the South American qualifying section, with just two victories taken from their 15 fixtures.

They sit bottom of the pool, one point behind eighth-placed Paraguay, but could restore some pride by taking maximum points against Sergio Markarian´s men at the Estadio Nacional de Lima.

If Bolivia do pick up their third win of the campaign and Paraguay fail to beat second-placed Colombia in Asuncion, they would at least avoid the ignominy of propping up the final standings.

However, Azkargorta´s team are on a run of eight games without victory, with their last win coming in a 2-1 friendly triumph over Haiti in February.

There were signs of improvement in a 1-1 draw at home to Ecuador in their last qualifier though, when they were only denied a win as Felipe Caicedo´s penalty cancelled out Jaime Arrascaita´s opener.

Flamengo striker Marcelo Moreno is the man Bolivia will look to provide the attacking impetus against Peru, with the 26-year-old having four goals to his name thus far in the campaign.

Victory will not come easy, however, with Peru desperate to end their own winless run.

Markarian´s side have gone five matches without victory, and have lost their last three matches in a row.

Peru could feasibly finish bottom of the group if Bolivia reverse a four-goal swing, and Paraguay beat Colombia.

Key to their hopes will be Schalke forward Jefferson Farfan, who has notched five goals in the pool so far.

Their latest fixture saw them take an unlikely 1-0 lead against Argentina through Claudio Pizarro´s 21st-minute strike last Friday.

But they were unable to hold out in Buenos Aires, as a brace from Ezequiel Lavezzi and a Rodrigo Palacio goal earned a 3-1 victory for the group winners.

Kenny Dalglish had scouted the young star at Bordeaux, and requested the chairman Jack Walker to begin discussions with the player’s club. He refused, and famously said, “Why do you want to sign Zinedine Zidane when we have Tim Sherwood?”

FIFA World Cup Qualifying Preview: Costa Rica v Mexico

Mexico travel to Costa Rica on Tuesday knowing their hopes of qualifying for the FIFA World Cup are still very much in the balance.

Victor Manuel Vucetich´s men head into their final CONCACAF qualifier in fourth place following victory in the new manager´s first game in charge against Panama on Friday.

Mexico are now in pole position for a spot in the intercontinental play-off with New Zealand in November, but appear unlikely to overhaul third-placed Honduras and seal automatic qualification.

Vucetich´s side would need three points against Costa Rica, a victory for bottom-placed Jamaica over Honduras and a two-goal swing in their favour to finish third.

The visitors should take confidence from their success over Panama, but face a tough opponent in Costa Rica, who suffered only their second defeat of the final round of qualification in Honduras three days ago.

Jorge Luis Pinto´s Costa Rica - who have already ensured their place at next year´s finals - have also not lost at home since September 2012.

It was Mexico who triumphed on that day as they ran out 2-0 victors in the second round of qualification, but the hosts will be eager to exact revenge against a team they have not beaten since 2001.

Defeat for Mexico could allow Panama - who are three points behind in fifth ahead of their game with pool winners United States - to move into the play-off spot.

The onus will be on the likes of Javier Hernandez, who has scored five times in qualifying, and Raul Jimenez - scorer of the late winner against Panama - to help them avoid that scenario.

A draw will be enough for Mexico to wrap up their place in the play-off, but Vucetich´s men will be determined to record successive victories for the first time since July in San Jose.
