Argentina Primera Division Wrap: Furch secures Arsenal victory

Arsenal have moved clear in second spot in the Argentina Primera Division with a 2-1 win over nine-man San Lorenzo.

The two sides entered the clash at Arsenal´s Estadio Julio Humberto Grondona in Avellanda level on 20 points but the hosts - with the helping hand of some ill discipline from San Lorenzo - claimed all three points late on.

The visitors were down to nine after winger Leandro Navarro and defender Santiago Gentiletti were both sent off for earning second yellow cards in the 49th and 65th minutes respectively.

Despite their clear disadvantage, San Lorenzo took the lead with 16 minutes to play - as Ignacio Piatti converted from an Angel Correa assist.

The hosts were struck into action by conceding the goal and substitute Julio Furch popped up to equalise two minutes later.

Furch then won it for Arsenal in the first minute of added time, to send them clear second and three points from league leaders Newell´s Old Boys.

Newell´s enjoyed a 1-0 win at home to River Plate, with Victor Lopez netting the winner in the 77th minute.

It was their eighth win from 11 matches this season and kept Newell´s clear top on 26 points.

Boca Juniors were denied all three points late in their hosting of lowly Rosario Central in a 1-1 stalemate.

Boca struck early via Emmanuel Gigliotti but dropped two points when Rosario´s Sebastian Abreu was on target in the 89th minute - extending the latter´s unbeaten run to four matches.

Atletico Rafaela made it three wins in succession, with a 1-0 result at home to Argentinos Juniors, who had Leonardo Sanchez dismissed late.

Rafaela sit in fifth on 19 points, ahead of Godoy Cruz and Gimnasia La Plata on 18.

Godoy Cruz chalked up a 1-0 road win over Lanus, who slumped to their third straight loss, while Gimnasia La Plata held on for a 1-1 draw away at Tigre despite playing the second half with 10 men.

Estudiantes are eighth on the table, after winning just their third match of the season 1-0 over lowly Racing Club.

They have drawn seven of their 11 matches this season but Estudiantes snapped a run of three consecutive stalemates when Racing Club´s Jose Gomez got the final touch into his own net.

Racing Club are clear last with just two points from their 11 fixtures.

In other results, All Boys were kept to a 0-0 draw at home to Colon, while Quilmes won 1-0 at Belgrano and Olimpo came from behind early to defeat Velez Sarsfield on their own turf 2-1.

Espinoza warns Honduras to stay focused

Midfielder Roger Espinoza said he and his Honduras team-mates are embracing their World Cup qualifier against Jamaica in Kingston.

Honduras and Mexico are the last teams standing for an automatic spot in the 2014 World Cup in CONCACAF qualifying, with the final group games getting underway on Tuesday.

The Mexicans are also on the road, taking on already qualified Costa Rica, although they are also all-but guaranteed the fall-back scenario of an intercontinental play-off place.

A point would see Honduras guarantee their spot in the 32-team Cup finals next year but Wigan midfielder Espinoza said the gravity of the task intensified given their were on enemy soil.

"The match is crucial to our qualification hopes. But there´s no doubt that it´ll be tough, because Jamaica have nothing to lose," Espinoza said.

"We saw it with Costa Rica last Friday: they had already qualified but still caused us a lot of trouble. And this time we´re away, which is never easy."

Honduras crept past Costa Rica 1-0 courtesy of Jerry Bengston converting Espinoza´s through-ball, which saw the Hondurans maintain third place in the six-nation group.

But Espinoza said the squad knows there is still work to be done for Honduras to earn a spot at consecutive World Cups for the first time in their history.

"The win over Costa Rica was important but the worst thing now would be to take our foot off the pedal, thinking that we´ve already qualified," the 26-year-old said.

"We must remind ourselves that we´re not yet in Brazil, and that we won´t be until the final whistle sounds and we have the necessary points to finish in the top three. We need to remain as focused as possible."

Mexico´s Raul Jimenez acknowledged Honduras holds the fate of both nations in their hands but did not dismiss their chances of capitalising on any slip-up.

"I can´t imagine a bigger game than this one against Costa Rica," the 22-year-old striker said.

"We have to go there, and we have to win.

"We can´t control all of the factors in the other games but we must do what we can, and that is come away from San Jose with all three points."

The two qualifiers kick off at 130 GMT (Wednesday), along with Panama´s hosting of the United States.

Mathematically, Panama can still earn a play-off spot, although they would need to beat the USA and hope Mexico lose - a tough ask for the Panamanians who have won just one of nine qualifiers.

Calello: "Queremos que continúe"

BUENOS AIRES -- El presidente de Vélez Sarsfield, Miguel Calello, expresó este lunes que la dirigencia del club quiere que Ricardo Gareca continúe siendo el entrenador del equipo hasta que finalice su contrato.

"Mañana como todos los martes nos encontraremos en la villa (Olímpica) desayunando y ahí volveremos a hablar. No veo motivo para que este proceso se termine antes de tiempo. La dirigencia quiere que (Gareca) continúe", dijo Calello.

La incertidumbre sobre el futuro de Gareca se produjo ayer tras la derrota que Vélez sufrió a manos de Olimpo de Bahía Blanca, cuando el mismo técnico dijo que analizaría terminar el contrato que tiene firmado con la institución, el cual caduca en diciembre.

"No coincido en eso de que a medida que va transcurriendo el tiempo se va dando un desgaste, porque siempre se van modificando estructuras y situaciones que te permiten estar motivado para ir por algo más", señaló el presidente de Vélez.

Calello expresó que la situación que atraviesa el equipo no debería ser un factor para que Gareca se aleje del club, ya que en otras situaciones el panorama no era tan bueno y el "Tigre" siguió ligado a la institución.

"En 2010 veníamos de un período en el que Vélez llegó a perder cuatro partidos seguidos entre Sudamericana y campeonato. No era un período exitoso, sin embargo Ricardo se sentó con nosotros, volvimos a hablar y hubo Ricardo Gareca por más tiempo", indicó.

De Felippe piensa en Crucero

BUENOS AIRES -- El entrenador de Independiente, Omar De Felippe, mantuvo este lunes una charla con el plantel luego de la dolorosa derrota por 1-0 frente a Almirante Brown, en el regreso a los entrenamientos con miras al choque del fin de semana como local frente a Crucero del Norte.

Un ensayo de dos horas programó De Felippe para el retorno a los trabajos de cara al choque ante nada menos que el tercero del campeonato, en el que esperan contar con Facundo Parra, quien si se recupera de una contractura en el gemelo derecho, seguramente entrará por Cristian Menéndez.

Por lo pronto, el ex delantero de Chacarita trabajó en forma diferenciada junto a los kinesiólogos del plantel y en el cuerpo técnico son optimistas en cuanto a su presencia en la siguiente escala del inédito viaje de Independiente por la B Nacional.

En esa dirección, seguirán la recuperación de Parra así como también la puesta a punto del defensor Julián Velázquez tras un desgarro, y luego evaluarán si juegan o no de entrada ante Crucero del Norte en el Libertadores de América.

Tras la práctica, Franco Razzotti admitió que "queda un poco la bronca" por la última derrota, aunque remarcó que, como mínimo, Independiente mereció un empate.

"Analizando en frío, estamos evaluando los detalles y como mínimo, deberíamos no haberlo perdido, pero el rival hizo bien su trabajo. Ya hablamos mucho al respecto", señaló el mediocampista central.

En ese sentido, agregó: "Tuvimos situaciones, pero no las concretamos y después del gol de Almirante se nos complicó poder romper la línea defensiva que propusieron".
