Alfaro resaltó su "alegría y orgullo"

SAN FERNANDO DEL VALLE DE CATAMARCA -- Gustavo Alfaro resaltó su "alegría y orgullo" por dirigir al plantel de Arsenal que goleó a San Lorenzo de Almagro 3-0, obtuvo la Copa Argentina 2013 y se clasificó para la Libertadores 2014.

"Siento alegría y orgullo. Si tengo que defeninir una sensación y un sentimiento por estos jugadores es orgullo. Pueden tener limitaciones, problemas en el medio, pero si hay algo que sabés es cómo se juegan esta clase de partidos", sintetizó el entrenador, tras el rotundo 3-0 ante el Ciclón en el Estadio Bicentenario Ciudad de Catamarca.

El orientador agregó además que le da "tranquilidad ver cómo estos muchachos se matan en los entrenamientos y trabajan para conseguir los objetivos".

Por otro lado, Alfaro admitió que Newell´s Old Boys es el mejor equipo de la Argentina en la actualidad, pero subrayó que sus dirigidos tienen "hambre de gloria".

"Creo que Newell´s es el mejor equipo, el que tiene un juego más vistoso. Arsenal es más humilde, (los futbolistas) saben cómo se juegan las finales, las instancias decisivas. Este equipo tiene personalidad, hambre de gloria", destacó el conductor.

Alfaro logró su cuarto título con el club del Viaducto, luego de conquistar la Copa Sudamericana 2007, el Clausura 2012 y la Supercopa Argentina 2012.

Vélez: Pratto y Tobio, diferenciados

BUENOS AIRES -- El delantero de Vélez Sarsfield Lucas Pratto se entrenó el miércoles de manera diferenciada con vistas al partido del viernes ante Racing Club, de visitante, por 12ma. fecha de torneo Inicial, y el jueves será evaluado para determinar su titularidad.
Pratto, de 25 años, se entrenó aparte en el gimnasio de la Villa Olímpica del club por un esguince esternocostal y el jueves, el cuerpo médico, decidirá si está en óptimas condiciones para el cotejo ante Racing.

En tanto, el defensor Fernando Tobio también se entrenó diferenciado por un edema óseo en el dedo gordo del pie derecho, junto a Sebastián Domínguez, quien retornó luego de la citación al seleccionado argentino de fútbol para la doble y última jornada de Eliminatorias Sudamericanas Brasil 2014.

El resto del plantel que dirige Ricardo Gareca realizó trabajos de fútbol en espacios reducidos.

Por su parte, el atacante colombiano Jonathan Copete viajó a su país, con permiso del cuerpo técnico, para cumplir con un trámite personal y regresará el jueves.

El plantel del club de Liniers volveráel jueves a los entrenamientos, en la Villa Olímpica de Ituzaingó, donde Gareca decidirá el equipo que enfrentará a Racing.

Vélez, que suma trece unidades y viene de perder 2-1, de local, ante Olimpo de Bahía Blanca, visitará el viernes, desde las 20:30, a Racing Club (2), en el cotejo válido por la 12ma. fecha del torneo Inicial.

Glorias, "por un clásico en paz"

ROSARIO -- Ex jugadores de Rosario Central y Newell´s Old Boys se reunieron el miércoles en el Monumento a la Bandera en un acto en el cual se abogó para que el clásico que ambos equipos sostendrán el próximo domingo en el Gigante de Arroyito se juegue en un marco de total tranquilidad.
Aldo Pedro Poy, Daniel Killer, Marcelo Pagani, Gerardo González, Claudio Scalise, Andrés Díaz, Daniel Quinteros y Cristian Colusso fueron los ex jugadores de Central que participaron del evento.

Por el lado de Newell´s concurrieron Víctor Rogelio Ramos, Ricardo Lunari, Andrés Rebottaro, Miguel Angel Fullana y Javier Torrente.

Los jugadores además de llevar puestas las camisetas de sus respectivos equipos posaron con una bandera de color blanco en la cual se podría leer: "Por un clásico sin violencia".

"Nos reunimos para dar un mensaje de paz, para tener una ciudad más tranquila, donde el fútbol es algo muy importante. Todos queremos ganar, pero perder no debe ser tragedia", afirmó Poy, autor de aquel recordado gol de palomita por el cual Central le ganó a Newell´s la semifinal del Nacional de 1971.

Por su parte, Ramos, goleador histórico de Newell´s en el clásico, resaltó: "Los clásicos son un partido aparte, una fiesta, y esta es una buena iniciativa. Nosotros como ex jugadores aportamos nuestro granito de arena para que sea un clásico en paz porque esto es solamente fútbol".

Este evento fue organizado conjuntamente por el programa "2 de Punta" que se emite por FM Del Plata de Rosario y la Fundación Baby.

Facundo Coria concentra en Argentinos

BUENOS AIRES -- Tras varios semanas trabajando de manera diferenciada por una lumbalgia, Facundo Coria sumó minutos en reserva y se ganó un lugar en la lista de 20 concentrados que dio a conocer Ricardo Caruso Lombardi, de cara al partido que Argentinos disputará ante Estudiantes, el próximo viernes.

El campeón con Argentinos en el Clausura 2010 podría regresar justamente ante su ex club, Estudiantes de La Plata, si es que Caruso Lombardi decide llevarlo al banco de suplentes, con el objetivo de que siga sumando minutos de fútbol.

Mientras tanto, durante el entrenamiento a puertas cerradas del miércoles por la tarde, el entrenador continúo realizando cambios en la alineación titular en cuanto a esquema y nombres. Hoy fue el turno de participar en el equipo titular para Lucas Rodríguez, ya recuperado de una pubalgia, Diego Barisone y Raul Becerra.

Por su parte, Sergio Vittor y Daniel Villalba fueron probados en diferentes sectores del campo. El ex Independiente y Gimnasia de Jujuy comenzó el entrenamiento como zaguero y lo terminó como volante central, mientras que el ex River jugó tanto en el mediocampo, como en la delantera.

La formación titular sería definida durante la práctica de fútbol del jueves por la tarde que se llevará a cabo en el estadio Diego Maradona y, también, a puertas cerradas. Tras la misma, los jugadores quedarán concentrados de cara al partido que, finalmente, se estará jugando el viernes a las 18:30 hs.

Cabe recordar que en la noche del miércoles, un grupo de juveniles estará participando de un partido amistoso ante Talleres de Remedios de Escalada, en la cual se inaugurarán las luces artificiales del estadio del equipo del sur del Gran Buenos Aires.

Pellegrino: "Hay que ir para adelante"

LA PLATA -- El entrenador de Estudiantes de La Plata, Mauricio Pellegrino se refirió el miércoles al partido del viernes ante Argentinos Juniors, en estadio Diego Maradona de La Paternal, por la duodécima fecha del torneo Inicial, se mostró confiado en el potencial del Pincha y aseguró que "a este equipo no le queda otra que ir para adelante".

Asimismo, el técnico destacó que "Argentinos, como todos en este torneo, es un equipo de riesgo, saben jugar muy bien en su cancha y exigen jugar un partido de máxima concentración. Nos vino muy bien haber ganado ante Racing, porque los triunfos dan tranquilidad y los chicos se lo merecían, porque vienen haciendo bien las cosas. Eso les sirve para ganar en confianza".

Pellegrino manifestó además que "a este equipo no le queda otra que ir para arriba y para adelante, depende de la humildad que tengamos y de la actitud que mostremos en los partidos. Está claro que la búsqueda para mejorar no se termina nunca para tratar de ensamblar un buen conjunto".

"Es una posibilidad que se repitan los mismos once que le ganaron a Racing y si bien hemos realizado cambios, muchas veces obligados, a mi no me gusta cambiar demasiado, pero las necesidades te llevan a buscar variantes hasta que el equipo se sienta cómodo", afirmó el entrenador.

Sabella keeps the door open for World Cup Squad as defence is still a concern

Qualification has been nothing but a success for Alejandro Sabella as his Argentina side have cruised into the Word Cup but there are still some question marks over the defence. Benfica’s, Ezequiel Garay appears to be the definite choice but his partner in the centre of a defence is more unclear.

Federico Fernandez has been the preferred choice but his inclusion in the side that lost last night to Uruguay along with several of the fringe players may suggest that Sabella is not too confident in the 24-year-old. Certainly his performance will not have helped his argument to be included. It was Fernandez’s sloppy pass that gifted Uruguay the ball and allowed Cavani to score the winner.

Sabella stated after the game that he was grateful to the players but suggested that the squad is by no means complete. ”As the National Team coach I should not stick to an idea if I see that there are some things that can be positive for the World Cup.”

So who could Sabella look at before naming his squad? The three players that come to mind for the November friendlies against Russia and Bosnia are Gonzalo Rodriguez, Nicolas Otamendi and Lucas Orban.

25-year-old, Otamendi has the most experience at international level and was included in the 2010 World Cup Squad but has fallen out of favour in recent times. However, solid performances for Porto and uncertainty in the squad at centre back has brought Otamendi back into contention.

Gonzalo Rodriguez is currently playing in Italy for Fiorentina and although he has only 6 caps for Argentina he has plenty of experience playing in Europe, having left San Lorenzo for Villarreal in 2004. Lucas Orban offers the least in experience and after making a name for himself at Tigre, the 24-year-old completed a move to Bordeaux in the transfer window.

It will be no surprise to see one or all of theses names in the next squad as Sabella explores his options before making his final squad for the World Cup.

Scrambling for spots

With Tuesday’s dead rubber draw between Peru and Bolivia, the South American qualifiers for the 2014 World Cup came to a close. Compared to that of other continental confederations around the globe, the current qualifying system used by Conmebol is the most entertaining, the most competitive and it serves as the best preparation for major tournaments.

All ten of Conmebol’s member nations (nine this time around, with Brazil qualified as World Cup hosts) compete in one group, and the guaranteed fixture list of home and away games provides a stern test for the better nations and a superb chance for development for the weaker nations. For proof, one needs look no further than Ecuador and Venezuela, once the continent’s whipping-boys. Ecuador has now qualified for its third World Cup since 2002 and although Venezuela narrowly missed out on qualification, their steady progress makes them strong candidates to make the 2018 finals.

In the absence of Brazil, Argentina unsurprisingly topped the group. Seeing as they will be the “home” team in most of the southern venues at next year’s tournament, and considering their wealth of attacking talent (including Lionel Messi, someone you may have heard of), Argentina must be considered among the favourites to win in Brazil.

Colombia finished in second place and qualify for their first World Cup finals since France 98. Much has been made of this Colombia side (with good reason when you consider their front three of James Rodríguez, Teo Gutiérrez and Radamel Falcao), but comparisons with the golden generation of the early 90s are unfair and invalid. Not only did that team have more quality in more areas of the field, they also had to deal with inhumane external pressure that culminated in the tragic murder of el Caballero del Fútbol Andrés Escobar after their elimination from the 1994 World Cup.

Speaking exclusively about matters on the pitch, the current Colombia team is undoubtedly talented, but also dangerously imbalanced – a trade-off for having the superb Radamel Falcao in attack. While Falcao is probably the world’s best penalty box finisher, he is often only as good as the service he receives. When Colombia’s Argentinian coach José Pékerman started to fill his side with attacking options to feed Falcao, they started winning. However, this onus on attack leaves them vulnerable in defence, even more so with their creaking centre-back corps.

The 3-3 draw against Chile in Barranquilla was a microcosm of this current side. Pékerman started the match with three central defenders in an attempt to contain Chile’s attacking threats, but he still selected James Rodríguez and Teo to support Falcao. The result was a completely disjointed team, isolated forwards and a back line that Chile’s forwards repeatedly outpaced, racking up a 3-0 lead by half-time.

With the Barranquilla crowd spurring them on, Colombia came out fighting for the second half and overloaded Chile, playing a physical, high-intensity style. Amazingly, they drew the match 3-3.

Chile, who qualified in third place, suffer from many of the same problems. Under Jorge Sampaoli they play the most attractive attacking football on the continent, but are frequently undone in defence.

Sampaoli rose to prominence as the coach of Universidad de Chile, who entertained the continent in 2011 and -12 with their relentless attacking and haphazard defending. Sampaoli – a cross between Marcelo Bielsa, Pep Guardiola and a furious chimpanzee – has translated that system word for word to the national team, and they are sure to be the neutral’s favourite next year.

Looking at World Cup 2014 odds, Chile could be a good outside bet for reaching the semi-finals.

Perhaps unfairly regarded as a surprise entrant, Ecuador sealed the fourth and final automatic qualifying spot. Their Colombian coach Reginaldo Rueda has built a solid unit capable of causing problems to any team, spearheaded by excellent wingers Antonio Valencia and Jefferson Montero.

With the tragic death of Cristián “Chucho” Benítez earlier in the year, Ecuador had to overcome a particularly tough hurdle in order to qualify. Besides being a close friend to many of the squad and an irreplaceable dressing room presence, Chucho was also crucial to Ecuador’s style on the pitch.

Playing as a second striker behind Felipe Caicedo, Chucho would work the channels and frustrate defences, often creating chances out of nothing. Ecuador have no-one else in that mould, and while they struggled to adept emotionally and technically, they very nearly lost their place in the top four.

Current Copa América holders Uruguay finished in fifth place and will play off against Jordan for a spot in Brazil. Despite a disappointing campaign, I fully expect them to qualify, but I will talk more about them another day.

With teams around the world scrambling for places in the group stage draw, hosts Brazil and their coach Luiz Felipe Scolari are putting the finishing touches to their preparation. The Seleção played two friendlies during this international break, two 2-0 wins over South Korea and Zambia in the Far East.

It is clear that the side that won the Confederations Cup in July will form the base of their team at the World Cup, with several fringe players fighting for the final spots in the 23-man squad. These friendlies have more or less confirmed the presence of Jefferson and Diego Cavalieri as back-up goalkeepers, Dante and Dedé as the reserve centre-backs and Maxwell as Marcelo’s understudy at left-back.

Liverpool’s defensive midfielder Lucas Leiva made an excellent return to the national side, and he may be in with a chance of a starting berth ahead of Luiz Gustavo. It doesn’t look like good news for Lucas Moura or Alexandre Pato though, as both were disappointing, slated by Brazilian journalists and will probably miss the final cut.

By my reckoning, there are only two available spots in Brazil’s World Cup squad: a centre-forward (most likely Fred on his return from injury, possibly Diego Costa) and a reserve attacking midfielder. If I were Felipão, I would be looking at either Liverpool’s Phillipe Coutinho or Atlético-MG’s Diego Tardelli.

River hizo fútbol con Ferreyra de lateral

BUENOS AIRES -- Durante la práctica de fútbol de la mañana del jueves, Ramón Díaz puso en cancha los probables titulares para el partido en el cual River enfrentará a Belgrano y la novedad pasó por la inclusión de Osmar Ferreyra como lateral en el sector izquierdo.

Tras el uso del artículo 225 ante Newells, Leonel Vangioni deberá cumplir la fecha de suspensión por acumulación de tarjetas amarillas y, para jugar ante Belgrano, Ramón Díaz probó con Ferreyra en su lugar. Otras alternativas que analiza el entrenador para el puesto son Ramiro Funes Mori o Jonathan Botinelli.

Además, con respecto a los que cayeron en Rosario el pasado domingo, se producirían los ingresos de Gabriel Mercado, Matías Kranevitter y Teófilo Gutiérrez en lugar de Federico Vega, Cristian Ledesma y Giovanni Simeone, respectivamente.

De esta manera, los once para recibir a Belgrano serían: Marcelo Barovero; Gabriel Mercado, Gastón Pezzella, Eder Álvarez Balanta, Osmar Ferreyra; Carlos Carbonero, Matías Kranevitter, Leonardo Ponzio; Manuel Lanzini; Teófilo Gutiérrez, Federico Andrada.

River tiene 14 puntos en el Torneo Inicial, producto de cuatro triunfos, dos empates y cinco derrotas. El equipo de Ramón Díaz perdió en sus últimas dos presentaciones y se alejó de la lucha por el campeonato. Cabe recordar que aún se mantiene vivo en la Copa Sudamericana y enfrentará a Lanús, en los cuartos de final.
