Honduras defender Álvaro Romero ‘delighted’ with Roberto Carlos comparisons

Olimpia full-back Álvaro Romero is ‘delighted’ to be compared to legendary Brazilian defender Roberto Carlos.

The 16 year-old is currently with Honduras’ under-17 side at the FIFA U-17 World Cup.

Romero’s performances have caught the eye, particularly in Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Slovakia.

His small stature and explosive style offer a likeness to Roberto Carlos - one admirers have noted. The Honduran is honoured to be given such a comparison.

“The first time I was compared with Roberto Carlos was earlier this year at the CONCACAF U-17 Championship in Panama,” he told fifa.com. “I’m delighted with the comparison and it’s a great source of pride to me, because he was a superb left-back, and a star for Brazil and Real Madrid.”

Romero admits he tries to mimic the Brazilian’s free-kick technique.

“I’d like to thank everyone for the compliment and I’ll work hard to become like Roberto Carlos or even better. Since I was young, I’ve been practicing free-kicks and I hope to perfect them like Carlos managed to do.”

Honduras are second in Group A behind Brazil. They have four points after two rounds. José Valladares’ side will need to defeat the Seleção on Wednesday to secure top spot.

Enig !

Cángele pidie "no echar mucha leña"

Barovero: "Una racha complicada"

Veteran strikes late to give A’Town point; TG clip W’house

VETERAN attacker Kevin Wilson equalised for August Town FC in the dying seconds to maintain the home team´s unbeaten start to the Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) season in yesterday´s 1-1 result with Cavalier SC at the University of the West Indies (UWI) Mona Bowl.

Cavalier´s Deno Schaffe capitalised on an error from August Town goalkeeper Kevin Graham to open the scoring in the 29th minute, but Wilson tied the game with a simple header in the fourth minute of time added on.

With the draw, both teams moved to seven points from five matches.
At the Edward Seaga Complex in a titanic match-up, the host Tivoli Gardens defeated Waterhouse 2-1. Keammar Daley gave Tivoli the opening goal from the penalty spot in the 14th minute and Rafiek Thomas sealed the win in the 58th. Waterhouse consolation came from Weston Forrest in minute 87.

At Mona, August Town coach ´Max´ Straw was relieved with the point and said he "expected a tough game because Cavalier are doing well on the road".

David Lalor, the coach of the visiting team, said he was "disappointed with the result, because they should have been put away with those chances we got".

Schaffe´s goal was all that separated the teams in a generally low-keyed first half, but August Town showed improved ambition in the second stanza as they desperately sought the equaliser.

It was, however, left to two substitutes — Nicholas Smith and Wilson — to manufacture the all-important goal deep into the encounter. Smith breezed down the right side before fizzing a cross for Wilson to head into the net with Cavalier ’keeper Jovel Plunkett at his mercy.

There was further late drama, but Plunkett saved Cavalier from conceding twice in less than a minute. The alert shot-stopper pushed the ball onto the crossbar after an attempted clearance rebounded off an opposing player and veered menacingly towards goal.

In other early results yesterday, Montego Bay United blanked Rivoli United 3-0 at Wespow Park, Humble Lion clipped visiting Boys’ Town 2-1 to maintain their lead, and Sporting Central Academy added to Portmore United’s woes by defeating them 3-1 at Juici Patties Park.

Schafer urges players to work harder for spots in national set-up

Jamaica head coach Winfried Schafer urged players to work harder to earn and keep places in the national senior set-up.

"Players must fight for their positions... players can´t feel like they must play as they will sleep (relax)... the players must fight for their positions and the best players will play," said the German.

Schafer, who took over the reins from Theodore ´Tappa´ Whitmore at the tailend of Jamaica´s failed Brazil 2014 World Cup campaign, expressed concern with the poor transition of junior players to the senior ranks.

"I remember two years ago with the Under-17 team in the (Mexico) World Cup, which players from that team are presently in the national team? You had a very good team, and only Alvas (Powell) is in this team, where are the 11 players from this team, you see what I mean?"

The former Cameroon coach indicated that part of the slow development and eventually transition of players is due, in part, on the players themselves.
"These players have to work, work and keep working, and this is what we want," he said, as he addressed a post-match press conference after the Boyz played to a 2-2 draw with Honduras in the final World Cup qualifier at the National Stadium on Tuesday night.

With a month left on his contract and negotiation still ongoing, Schafer has maintained his futuristic rhetoric regarding the programme. He said going forward, Jamaica´s goalscoring problem has to be a priority from a technical point of view.

"We have to learn to shoot to the goal, we must learn to get more passes to the strikers, the strikers must learn to come for the ball, but we cannot in two days change what we have for years.

"What we have to do is take things step by step. I want to talk to the coaches in the clubs as we need strikers, I see a young boy in one of the clubs and he has potential, but he must work harder and he needs the help of his coaches," Schafer noted.

In 10 matches of the hexagonal of the CONCACAF World Cup qualifiers, Jamaica scored five goals — one a penalty and the other an own goal — and conceded 13, which summed up the team´s form on the offensive front.

Schafer also said that Jamaica´s preparation in the final phase was woefully inadequate and was far behind the five other contenders. But moving ahead, he has a clear vision as to what needs to be done.

"For the future we need camps and we need friendly matches, and I know that the young players like Kemar (Lawrence) and Romario (Campbell) want this (level) of training... we have good players in school football and for the 2018 World Cup campaign we need to see some of these players (coming though)," he noted.

"Our best performance (of the hexagonal round) was the first 70 minutes against the USA and the second half against Honduras... but the past is not important, it´s the future that is important and we have to work professionally," Schafer added.

If retained as coach of the senior Boyz, Schafer said he would focus on building a base of local players, but warned that he would keep looking outside of Jamaica for talent to complement the home-based stock.
"We can´t build a (strong) team of only local players, we have to find the players from overseas and then we will have a good team -- the Jamaican team," noted the 63-year-old German.

USA (22 points), Costa Rica (18) and Honduras (15) have booked automatic spots to the Brazil 2014 showpiece, while kingpins Mexico (11) have found themselves in unfamiliar territory as the fourth-place finisher who will have to play-off against Oceania champions New Zealand in a home-and-away tie next month for a possible additional spot for CONCACAF.

Panama (eight) join Jamaica (five) as the nations who failed to progress.

LEARNING FROM THE LAST WORLD CUP CAMPAIGN

Now that the dream of Brazil has been shattered, the Jamaica Football Federation is tasked with putting another together. The road to Russia in 2018 beckons. But if that dream is not to end another disaster the way this last one did, the JFF has to be willing to learn from its past mistakes and be willing to seek help where necessary.

Nobody knows everything and even the brightest among us occasionally need to consult with persons not as smart but who have been blessed with the types of experiences that are invaluable. Among the salvageable pieces scattered about are a good coach, one which based on his vast experience could turn out to be our best one yet.

Winfried Schafer is yet to win a game as coach of the Reggae Boyz. After four games he has one loss and three draws. But then you have to consider that he took over a team in June after Theodore Whitmore was canned after the Boyz lost 2-0 in Honduras and had not looked like winning a game in the five games before that disastrous performance.

Schafer came in and almost immediately, without getting a chance to know his players, had the team playing better. A lot of what Schafer brought was years of success as a player at Borussia Monchengladbach that won five Bundesliga titles in the 1970s. He was a member of the 1970 team.

As a manager he led Cameroon to the Africa Cup of Nations title in 2002 and Al Ahli to the United Arab Emirates League title in 2006. He has had many other successes in between and after those periods and it is this wealth of experience at winning that he brings now to Jamaica. We have to be prepared to give him what he wants; what he needs to get Jamaica to have a winning programme once again.

Schafer, I feel, needs to be given a free hand to develop players and to implement programmes that he thinks will be essential to the success of the process that he will guide. The JFF also has to find a way to get a few decent playing surfaces of international standard in the country on which players can develop their games to the level that will put them on par with the best players in the CONCACAF region. There are other things that are needed but these getting these things done will be a good start.

Also among the scattered pieces is a crop of talented but under-developed players who can be shaped into quality players with some special work to get them up to par with what is needed to mount a competitive campaign.

Focus over the next two years at the start of the next campaign should be on getting a pool of players that would have been assessed and put into specially designed programmes to get them up to par.

These players and those based overseas also need to be given opportunities to gel. That means many practice games, as many as possible, against teams in the Caribbean, and the region to give the pool a chance to become familiar with each other.

That pool of players along with others who might show themselves over the next couple of years, whether they are playing in college here or abroad or in high school, will provide the depth that is critical to a long and arduous campaign. We all saw what happened when Nyron Noseworthy got hurt early in the last campaign. A good defense is critical to any protracted campaign. They key to winning games is to score and not be scored upon.

We also need to find four or five dynamic creative midfield players, something that Jamaica clearly lacked in this failed run at Brazil. Strikers can’t score without the ball and if midfielders aren’t good enough to get the ball to the strikers then they should not be in the programme. The time has come when we should not be settling for the mediocre. The beat the best we have to field the best.

But all these things make up only part of what is needed. It has become apparent that the JFF lacks the skill sets, the acumen, to put a proper programme together. That expertise is available however, but has never been utilized. There are people out there like UEFA A standard coach Jerome Samuels and administrators like Lorne Donaldson who are more than willing to make themselves available to the national programme but someone needs to reach out to them.

Both these men and several others are based abroad but are blessed with the kind of expertise and experience that the JFF lacks. Pride needs to be swallowed and these people brought in to lend a helping hand.

The more of us who shoulder the burden, the easier the load. It doesn’t hurt to ask for help.
