Brazil through after late flurry

Tournament favourites Brazil were made to suffer for the first time here at the FIFA U-17 World Cup in UAE, needing a late flurry of goals to beat ten-man Russia 3-1. The Round of 16 game from Abu Dhabi’s Mohammad Bin Zayed Stadium saw the Russians, who were so disappointing in the group stages, put up stiff resistance, only to be undone by a flurry of late goals from Boschilia and Mosquito.

Brazil, so potent in the group stages with 15 goals from their three games, were unable to break down the Russian rearguard in the opening 45 minutes. The South Americans had a chance after just ten minutes, when Mosquito fired a shot in from the edge of the area that was easily handled by Anton Mitryushkin.

The Russians were looking stern at the back and they did a good job of limiting the Brazilians’ chances for most of the opening period. Brazil did manage a good effort on the half-hour mark, however, but Boschilia’s header from a corner-kick was brilliantly saved again by the terrific Mitryushkin. Danilo fired in a good effort from a free-kick just over from the edge of the area in the 37th minute, but it was all Brazil could muster as they finished the half uncharacteristically scoreless.

They came out with a greater sense of purpose in the second half. Boschilia hit just wide after Mosquito had the ball tackled away in the 47th minute. Mitryushkin had his hands full as the half progressed, blocking and diving away shit after shot from the frenzied Brazilians. Nathan had a good chance in the 52 second minute, but his shot from the edge of the box had its power sapped by a well-timed deflection. Seconds later Caio’s effort skipped just over the top corner.

With the Brazilian pressure mounting in waves, and their shots-on-target numbers approaching 20, the deadlock finally broke in the 72nd minute. Boschilia added another goal to make it 2-0 with ten minutes to go as Russia’s stubborn resistance finally gave way. The Europeans managed to claw a goal back in stoppage time through Sergey Makarov before Boschilia added a late insurance goal to make it 3-0 at the final whistle.

While Russia head for home wondering what might have been, Brazil – three-time champions – look ahead of a quarter-final against holders Mexico in what looks like the glamour tie of the quarter-final round.

Sub Bodden sees Honduras through

Substitute Jorge Bodden grabbed a winner 15 minutes from time as Honduras reached the quarter-finals of the FIFA U-17 World Cup with a 1-0 win over ten-man Uzbekistan. The miserly Uzbeks, who conceded just their second goal of the tournament, had Akramjon Komilov sent off midway through the first half for picking up two yellow cards, and Honduras dominated from then on.

Komilov´s dismissal was the turning point of the game, even though Uzbekistan managed to hold out for 50 minutes with the numerical disadvantage. Brayan Velasquez slipped away from the defender, who tried to stop the Honduras No7 getting past by grabbing onto his shirt. Referee Pavel Kralovec showed Komilov his second yellow card, and he headed back to the dressing room for an early bath.

Uzbek midfielder Odiljon Hamrobekov had earlier had the first real chance of the match, as he found space 25 yards from Cristian Hernandez´s goal, but his shot found the Honduras goalkeeper.

Fredy Medina had Honduras´ best chance of the first half with a free-kick from distance, but despite hitting the ball well - Sarvar Kamirov was not troubled in the Uzbek goal. Jose Valladeres´ side went much closer just after the hour mark as Kevin Alvarez rose highest to nod a header goalwards, but his effort hit the left-hand post and went wide.

Bodden was introduced and tried an effort from distance, which went well wide - but the best was yet to come from the FC Municipal Valencia forward. Alberth Elis slid a through ball towards Velasquez, who turned on the left-hand side of the box to feed a clever pass through to Bodden, who fired in from close range.

Despite being down to ten men, Uzbekistan threw everything at Honduras in the closing stages but were unable to draw level and sunk to the floor on the final whistle as their hopes of U-17 World Cup glory were ended. Their conquerors Honduras celebrated wildly though as they head into the quarter-finals, where they will face Sweden, who defeated Japan earlier in the day.

Barros Schelotto espera que Diego Abal "sea invisible" en Lanús-River

BUENOS AIRES -- El entrenador de Lanús, Guillermo Barros Schelotto, se adelantó a eventuales juegos de presión sobre los arbitrajes que involucran a River, al señalar que espera que el referí Diego Abal "sea invisible" en el juego del martes por los cuartos de la Copa Total Sudamericana.

"Uno no es ajeno a los arbitrajes a favor o en contra de River, pero nosotros tenemos que pensar que el árbitro haga lo mejor y sea invisible", sostuvo Barros Schelotto en conferencia de prensa tras el entrenamiento.

Si bien se le recordó que a River el arbitraje lo afectó en el choque ante Rafaela al anularle un gol lícito, Barros Schelotto recordó que en el reciente partido frente a River "no tuvimos una buena experiencia" cuando un fallo equivocado dio pie a una pelota parada que significó el gol del conjunto de Ramón Diaz.

En cuanto al equipo se abstuvo de confirmar la formación aunque tácitamente admitió que jugará con un 4-4-2. Dejó la duda si al uruguayo Santiago Silva en el ataque lo acompañará Diego Melano o Jorge Pereyra Díaz.

El equipo iría con Agustín Marchesín; Carlos Araujo, Paolo Goltz, Carlos Izquerdoz, Maximiliano Velázquez; Diego González, Jorge Ortiz, Leandro Somoza, Víctor Ayala; Silva y Pereyra Díaz o Melano.

También confirmó que Lautaro Acosta está entre los concentrados, aunque recordó que tras buen tiempo sin jugar por lesión "volvió a jugar 45 minutos en Reserva".

El técnico reconoció que River es un "equipo difícil de hacerle goles" y tiene "jugadores muy importantes, como Teo Gutiérrez con mucha experiencia".

Barros Schelotto evitó señalar que es el más importante partido desde que llegó a Lanús.

"Lo tomamos no como una final pero en forma muy intensa y el que pega primero pega dos veces a si que vamos intentar ganar. Por el contexto es importante porque nos jugamos el pase a semifinales: estamos 50 y 50", evaluó Guillermo

Campi o Rolheiser, la duda ante Olimpo

BUENOS AIRES --El plantel de Racing se encuentra concentrado en Bahía Blanca a la espera del partido de este lunes por la noche ante Olimpo, a las 20.10 en el estadio Roberto Carminatti, con el arbitraje de Mauro Vigliano, por la 13° fecha del Torneo Inicial.

En principio, Reinaldo Merlo, entrenador de La Academia, aún no despejó la duda en el medio entre el debut del juvenil Gastón Campi (zaguero central por naturaleza) y Leandro Rolhieser, para acompañar a Bruno Zuculini. El equipo será: Saja; Gómez, Ortíz, Saveljich, Corvalán; Villar, Zuculini, Campi o Rolheiser, De Paul; Viola y Vietto.

Del resto que componen la nómina de 20 convocados para este encuentro, dos quedarán afuera del banco de suplentes. Estos son: Ibáñez, Cahais, Quilez, Melillo, Battaglia, Aued, Hauche y Dinenno.

Este será el segundo partido de Mostaza en su tercer ciclo como técnico de Racing, tras la derrota ante Vélez de la fecha pasada. El conjunto de Avellaneda está último en el campeonato, producto de 10 derrotas y dos empates, y buscará su primer triunfo ante un rival directo en la lucha por el promedio.

Vélez repitiría equipo en la Copa


BUENOS AIRES -- Vélez repetiría el jueves en su visita a Ponte Preta, por la ida de los cuartos de final de la Copa Sudamericana, el equipo que venció el martes pasado a Argentinos Juniors 2-0 por el torneo Inicial.

Al menos eso dejó entrever su entrenador, Ricardo Gareca, en el ensayo de fútbol de aproximadamente un cuarto de hora realizado hoy frente a la quinta división en la Villa Olímpica, después de un táctico de más de una hora.

En ese entrenamiento el "Tigre" alistó a Sebastián Sosa; Fabián Cubero, Fernando Tobio, Sebastián Domínguez y Emiliano Papa; Agustín Allione, Lucas Romero, Héctor Canteros y Ariel Cabral; Lucas Pratto y Mauro Zárate.

De esta forma, el volante Francisco Cerro, recuperado de una molestia en los aductores, deberá esperar su oportunidad en el banco de suplentes ante la inclinación de Gareca por la permanencia de Romero en el once inicial.

El plantel volverá a entrenarse mañana y el miércoles, día en que partirá por la tarde en un vuelo charter hacia la ciudad de Campinas, en San Pablo, donde se ubica el estadio Moisés Lucarelli que albergará el partido del jueves a las 19.15.

Alvarado por Cetto en San Lorenzo

BUENOS AIRES -- El defensor Pablo Alvarado regresaría a la titularidad en San Lorenzo para recibir el próximo domingo a Boca, en lugar de Mauro Cetto, quien fue suspendido luego de ser informado tras el partido frente a Lanús.

Argentina Primera Division Wrap: Brawl mars Arsenal´s draw

A brawl has marred the end of Arsenal´s 1-1 draw at home to Gimnasia La Plata in the Argentina Primera Division.

Five men were dismissed deep into second-half injury time, following an all-in scuffle at the Estadio Julio Humberto Grondona.

The disagreement was down to Arsenal´s objection to Gimnasia not handing back possession at the re-start following the match ball needing to be replaced due to a puncture.

Hosts Arsenal saw Damian Perez and Nicolas Aguirre dismissed - the latter for a headbutt - while Gimnasia´s Gaston Diaz, Matias Garcia and Franco Mussis were also sent off for their part in the ugliness.

Earlier, Milton Caraglio had put Arsenal ahead, as they looked to capitalise on Newell´s Old Boys´ slip-up earlier in the matchday.

But Gimnasia´s Fernando Pereyra saw the visitors level on 63 minutes to earn them a point on the road - to extend their unbeaten run to four matches.

Arsenal are in second spot, three points behind leaders Newell´s - who were also held to a 1-1 draw at home to Godoy Cruz.

Horacio Orzan had the league leaders up on seven minutes, but Godoy equalised on the hour-mark courtesy of Jose Fernandez´s strike.

Boca Juniors went level with Arsenal on 24 points, courtesy of their 2-0 success at home to Colon.

Quick-fire goals to Emmanuel Gigliotti - his sixth in five games - and Juan Martinez in the 20th and 21st minutes sent Boca past San Lorenzo, who slipped to fourth after their 3-2 loss away to Lanus.

Lanus led early, then came from behind to beat San Lorenzo, with Jorge Pereyra scoring a brace - netting in the fifth minute to put them ahead, before his 72nd-minute strike gave them the lead for good late on.

Velez Sarsfield made it consecutive victories to climb to ninth in the table, with a 2-0 home result over Argentinos Juniors.

Rosario Central had a slow start to their campaign, losing five of their first seven matches, but are since unbeaten in six - most recently claiming a 1-0 win at Belgrano.

Estudiantes are one point above Rosario in mid-table after a narrow 1-0 triumph at home to Quilmes, while Racing Club finally broke through for their first win of the season with a 1-0 result on the road at Olimpo.

Racing remain in bottom spot with just five points, and have six matches remaining to climb off the foot of the table to ensure they stay in the top flight next season.

All Boys and Tigre played out a 0-0 draw, while Atletico Rafaela´s hosting of River Plate also ended scoreless.

Moncagatta asumió su interinato

SANTA FE -- Rubén Moncagatta asumió hoy oficialmente la presidencia interina de Colón de Santa Fe luego de la renuncia de Germán Lerche y le pidió "paciencia" a los socios e hinchas para sacar adelante al club, que traviesa una grave crisis institucional y un muy mal presente deportivo.

En una improvisada sala de conferencias montada en el Hotel de Campo que el club posee a la vera de la autopista Santa Fe-Rosario, el ahora presidente le pidió "paciencia" y "unidad" a los colonistas, e insistió en que "juntos es la única manera de salir adelante".

"Tras el pedido de licencia de Germán (Lerche), nosotros estamos aquí, decimos presente y vamos a redoblar esfuerzos para sacar esto adelante, aunque para eso necesitamos del apoyo y de la paciencia de todos los que, como nosotros, quieren ver bien a Colón", dijo Moncagatta.

Según prometió, desde mañana se pondrán en contacto y mantendrán reuniones con los principales referentes de la oposición, buscando generar consenso y nuevas ideas para revertir el mal presente de la institución santafesina.

Asimismo, se anunció que en el corto plazo se pondrán a consideración de los interesados los números y balances de la entidad, a fin de que los interesados puedan conocer la real situación en la que se encuentra Colón, del cual se sabe está inmerso en una millonaria deuda. Afuera del predio "Sabalero", un grupo de cerca de 200 hinchas se autonvocaron para, al igual que la semana pasada, pedir la renuncia de toda la cúpula dirigencial que acompañaba a Lerche.

Además de la crisis institucional, el primer equipo de Colón atraviesa un muy mal presente deportivo y marcha anteúltimo en el Torneo Inicial junto a Olimpo de Bahía Blanca.
