Xolos keep slim hope alive and America draw blank again

Tijuana managed to remain in the hunt for the playoffs, at least mathematically, with a thumping 4-1 win over Atlante last night. Two goals from Argentine Striker, Dario Benedetto, a Cristian Pellerano penalty and a cheeky late, Richard Ruiz goal gave Los Xolos a deserved win and keep Atlante bottom of the table. Earlier, Club America failed to find the net for the second game in a row as the were held to a goalless draw by Queretaro. A lacklustre display led to a little discontent among the supporters who will be worried to see the dip in form since El Tri’s poaching of Manager, Miguel Herrera. Santos could move within a point of the leaders with a win this weekend and Las Aguilas are no longer looking quite such a sure bet for successive titles.

Newell’s battle to draw against Colon and Arsenal also lose ground

Dreadful weather conditions across much of Argentina created a rather wet set of Friday fixtures and undoubtedly impacted on the matches. League leaders, Newell’s Old Boys travelled to Santa Fe to face Colon, in need of a win after their defeat in the Clasico Rosarino. However, it took a late David Trezeguet brace to salvage a point after goals from Gabriel Graciani and Sebastian Prediger had given Colon a surprise two goal lead. Sunday’s match between Boca and San Lorenzo is now more significant is either side can exert some real pressure on Berti’s boys.

Earlier, in Sarandi, on a pitch that should probably not have been played on, Arsenal missed the chance to close on Newell’s, as they were held by All Boys. Milton Caraglio headed Alfaro’s title chasing side in front but Jonathan Calleri nodded the visitors level and amid the intense storm in Buenos Aires neither side could find a winner.

Argentina U17s beat Ivory Coast to reach World Cup Semi

Argentina’s Under 17s may have started the tournament slowly but they are gaining momentum and with the earlier 2-1 victory over a strong Ivory Coast side, confidence will be high going into Tuesday’s Semi Final against holders, Mexico.

Humberto Grondona’s boys started well and led after just 6 minutes when Joaquin Ibáñez took advantage of the space given to him by the African defence to chest the ball down and rifle the ball past Seck Diabagate.

Just after half an hour the lead was doubled as a corner from the right was allowed to bounce across the face of goal to allow Independiente’s, 16-year-old, centre half, Rodrigo Moreira to bundle the ball in.

A sleepy second half performance allowed the Ivorians a foot hole back in the game and when Diego Vera was adjudged to have handled, referee, Wolfgang Stark pointed to the spot. Franck Kessie converted the spot-kick with over 10 minutes remaining but they were unable to force an equaliser.

Argentina move on to Tuesday’s Semi Final hoping that they can finally win the only tournament that Argentina have not won.

Nigeria roll on after Uruguay scare

Three-time champion Nigeria booked their place in the semi-finals of the FIFA U-17 World Cup in UAE with a 2-0 win over Uruguay in Sharjah. Taiwo Awoniyi – deputising for the injured Success Isaac – scored both goals in a game that was a true test of the Golden Eaglets’ title aspirations. The African favourites will now meet Sweden in the semi-final round, in a replay of their 3-3 Group F draw.

Uruguay had the first chance of note after only six minutes when Enrique Etcheverry crossed low through the penalty area. The impressive Leandro Otormin got a boot to the ball, but could only direct his effort wide of goal. It was a false dawn for the 2011 runners-up, however, as the Golden Eaglets took the game by the scruff of the neck after 18 minutes.

The Nigerians, who scored 18 goals in their four games heading into the quarter-final round, opened the scoring from a fabulous piece of creative interplay. Kelechi Iheanacho, scorer of five goals at these finals, laid a wonderful through ball, perfectly weighted, from deep in midfield that was latched onto by Taiwo Awoniyi. The striker made no mistake, hitting home to the back post for his second goal of the tournament.

Stunned into action, the South Americans had a decent spell shortly after. Kevin Mendez and Otormin both tested Dele Alampasu from distance with powerful efforts. But it was Nigeria who controlled most of the possession and created the more dangerous chances. Captain Musa Muhammed’s cross from the right after 34 minutes was only just missed on the doorstep by the tall and rangy Awoniyi.

The second half started with a flurry of chances for Nigeria, Awoniyi and Musa Yahaya both going close to scoring after creating space for themselves at the edge of the penalty area. Uruguay were hanging on, absorbing wave after wave of Nigerian attacks. In the 68th minute, Iheanacho turned and fired from the edge of the box only for his shot to come flying off the back of a brave Uruguayan defender.

The knockout blow finally came in the 79th minute, and it followed the same pattern as the first Nigerian goal. Iheanacho picked up a perfect pass at the edge of the area from Chidiebere Nwakali and carried the ball toward goal with an elegant touch. The Uruguayan defence collapsed on the No10, but he had the presence of mind to pull the ball across the face of goal, where Awoniyi stabbed home inside the far post to send the fans into hysterics.

Manu Garba’s Nigeria now move on to their seventh U-17 World Cup semi-final, where they will face another thorough examination in the form of the organised and talented Swedes in Dubai.

Berti: "Me voy bastante conforme"

SANTA FE -- El director técnico de Newell´s Old Boys, Alfredo Berti, aseguró en la noche del viernes que lo dejó "bastante conforme" la producción de su equipo, pese al empate 2-2 ante Colón en Santa Fe.

"Me voy bastante conforme porque en lineas generales el equipo hizo un buen partido, en el que a pesar de cometer algunos errores fuimos capaces de generar muchas chances de gol. Por suerte pudimos concretar dos de esas y nos terminamos llevando un empate cuando parecía que la cosa se complicaba definitivamente", admitió en rueda de prensa el entrenador del líder del Torneo Inicial.

Y argumentó: "Obviamente que la expectativa de nosotros era la de ganar el partido, pero después en el desarrollo se nos hizo muy dificil. Lo mas positivo es que a mitad del segundo tiempo perdiamos dos a cero y sobre el final lo empatamos y lo podríamos haber ganado".

"Pienso que de acá y hasta el final todos los rivales nos van a salir a jugar de esta manera, y es probable que todos los partidos sean apretados y cerrados. Nosotros como equipo tenemos que estar muy tranquilos, que es la mejor manera de hacer las cosas para que salgan bien", remarcó.

Sobre la inclusión recién en el segundo período del goledor franco argentino David Trezeguet, Berti, precisó: "Hizo un gran partido, entró en un momento muy dificil y demostró que es un jugador de enorme jerarquía y con dos apariciones nos dio el empate. El es un jugador que está yendo de menor a mayor, y es por eso que hoy consideré que estaba para jugar cuarenta y cinco minutos".

Hernán Encina: "Mantuvimos la actitud para poder ganar el partido"

ROSARIO -- El mediocampista de Rosario Central Hernán Encina destacó la "actitud" que tuvo su equipo durante los noventa minutos para darle vuelta el partido 3-2 a Atlético de Rafaela.

"El partido se dio muy apretado, pero no nos bajoneamos con los goles de ellos y mantuvimos la actitud para poder ganar el partido", resaltó el volante, quien marcó dos tantos y fue la gran figura de los rosarinos.

Y agregó: "Estoy muy contento por el grupo y por la gente que acompaña siempre".

Con el triunfo de este sábado, Central acumuló su tercer éxito consecutivo en el Torneo Inicial y suma 21 puntos, por lo que se ubica a siete unidades de distancia del líder Newell´s Old Boys.

A CRÔNICA: Atlético Mineiro x Naútico

Quis o destino que o Náutico, na iminência de ser rebaixado, enfrentasse o Atlético-MG, atual campeão da Taça Libertadores, no Independência. O esperado aconteceu. Vitória atleticana e queda pernambucana confirmada. De quebra, o Independência viu o fim do jejum de gols de Diego Tardelli, que não marcava havia 15 jogos. O placar do triunfo alvinegro, 5 a 0, refletiu o abismo que separa os dois times na temporada e igualou a maior goleada do Brasileiro, que pertencia ao Cruzeiro, no jogo contra o Goiás, na primeira rodada.

Com atuação envolvente e velocidade no toque de bola na preparação para o Mundial de Clubes, em dezembro, no Marrocos, o Atlético não encontrou dificuldades para chegar à vitória, com gols de Fernandinho, Jô, Guilherme, Diego Tardelli e Alecsandro. Pela frente, a equipe encontrou um adversário já conformado com o rebaixamento, que chegou à sétima derrota consecutiva no Brasileirão.

No próximo fim de semana, o Galo vai a Salvador, onde encara o Bahia, na Arena Fonte Nova, sábado, às 19h30 (de Brasília). Já o Timbu recebe o Cricúma, no mesmo horário, porém, no domingo, na Arena Pernambuco.

Jogo de um time só
A diferença técnica entre as equipes era grande. Os primeiros minutos já deixaram claro que o atual campeão da Libertadores joga no momento um futebol bastante superior ao do lanterna do Brasileirão. A história da confirmação matemática do rebaixamento pernambucano começou a ser escrita com três letras, ou melhor, três toques. Victor lançou Diego Tardelli, que com um passe abriu a defesa do Náutico e deixou Fernandinho sozinho para, com categoria, definir com um leve toque por baixo da bola.
Já entregue, o Náutico parecia torcer para o jogo passar depressa. E não demorou a sair o segundo gol atleticano, com Jô, que completou boa jogada de Fernandinho. Nos últimos minutos da primeira etapa, o Galo chegou a tirar o pé do acelerador e tocar mais a bola, enquanto os pernambucanos apenas se defendiam.

Alegria de Tardelli
Com Helder no lugar de Olivera na volta do intervalo, o técnico Marcelo Martelotte quis dar movimentação ao ataque pernambucano. Mas o jogo não mudou. No segundo tempo, o Galo manteve o domínio e Guilherme fez o terceiro gol, após Jô desviar de cabeça escanteio batido por Tardelli.
Ao contrário da primeira etapa, o Galo se recusou a tirar o pé do acelerador e continuou pressionando o Timbu, com muita movimentação de Guilherme, Diego Tardelli, Jô e Fernandinho. Quando o time teve falta perigosa a seu favor, a torcida gritou o nome de Tardelli, que não balançava a rede desde o dia 25 de agosto. Depois de 15 jogos de jejum, o atacante cobrou a falta com perfeição e correu para o abraço.

O último gol veio em grande estilo, com dois jogadores que haviam acabado de entrar no jogo. Em jogada pela direita, Luan deu de chaleira por ciam do defensor e cruzou rasteiro para Alecsandro colocar na rede, para festa dos atleticanos, que passaram os últimos minutos cantando música com referência ao Mundial e provocação aos cruzeirenses.
