Gago completó el 23,8 por ciento de sus partidos desde que volvió al país

BUENOS AIRES -- Digámoslo de manera simple: a partir de su vuelta a la Argentina, Fernando Gago completó menos del 25 por ciento de los partidos que jugaron los equipos que integra, considerando tanto sus clubes como la Selección.

De hecho, el número de partidos que jugó íntegros es de apenas 23,8 por ciento. Sólo 10 de 42. Estamos hablando de encuentros en los que estuvo en cancha durante 90 minutos. Si contamos los juegos en los que ingresó al campo, el porcentaje asciende a 40 por ciento, lo cual tampoco resultar demasiado alentador.

No es ninguna novedad que Gago sufre problemas permanentes con las lesiones en los últimos años. De hecho, desde que llegó a Boca el volante pudo jugar apenas 6 de los 14 partidos que disputó el equipo de Carlos Bianchi (demasiado poco, un 42,8 por ciento del total de los encuentros). Pero la cuestión se agrava si uno mira la actividad del futbolista desde que regresó al país.

Su período de mayor inactividad fue de 2010 a 2012, cuando jugó sólo 7 encuentros con Real Madrid, y apenas 2 como titular. Tras su participación en Roma, donde tuvo rodaje y disputó 32 partidos, tuvo un paso por el Valencia en el que disputó apenas 13 juegos.

En Argentina la cosa no cambió demasiado: Vélez sólo estuvo presente en 8 partidos de 28 (un 28,5 por ciento contando Torneo Final, Copa Libertadores y Supercopa Argentina) y en tres de ellos debió dejar la cancha antes del pitazo final, incluendo un duelo ante Peñarol donde sólo duró 28 minutos.

Con la Selección Argentina, se presentó en apenas tres oportunidades desde que juega en el país -aunque el equipo de Sabella enfrentó ocho desafíos en ese lapso de tiempo- y sólo frente a Venezuela pudo completar los 90 minutos.

Sus números totales son elocuentes: 17 de 42 partidos jugados desde su retorno, 10 de 42 completados. Demasiado poco para un Boca que, con él en cancha, sumó 16 puntos de los 24 que tiene el torneo (triunfos ante Vélez, Racing, Quilmes, River y Colón y empate ante Argentinos) sobre un total de 18 en disputa. Además está invicto. Es decir que el problema de Boca no es Gago, sino que Gago no esté.

Dicho en criollo, cuando Gago juega, Boca no pierde y suma el 88,88 por ciento de los puntos posibles.

Pero no juega. Y he ahí el problema.

Boca llegó a 47 lesiones en el año

BUENOS AIRES -- Con el desgarro confirmado de Juan Sánchez Miño, Boca alcanzó las 47 lesiones de distintos futbolistas durante el año.

Boca adelanta su partido por Orion

BUENOS AIRES -- La AFA accedió el martes al pedido de Boca Juniors de jugar ante Tigre, el domingo a las 16 en lugar de las 18.15, en la Bombonera, por la 15ta. fecha del torneo Inicial para que pueda actuar el arquero Agustín Orión, quien viajará esa noche con la Selección nacional a la gira por Estados Unidos.

El horario inicial había sido estipulado a las 18.15, pero Boca logró reacomodar el horario y de esa forma el arquero podrá cumplir con su doble compromiso con su club y con la Selección nacional.

Orión participará en la gira que realizará el equipo que dirige Alejandro Sabella, que jugará dos partidos ante Bosnia y Ecuador.

El partido que irá en el horario de las 18.15 entonces será Racing-Argentinos Juniors, en Avellaneda.

Trezeguet: "No tengo ningún tipo de inconveniente con el entrenador"

ROSARIO -- El delantero de Newell´s Old Boys David Trezeguet aseguró el martes que no tiene "ningún inconveniente" con el director técnico del equipo, Alfredo Berti, luego de no haber sido incluido en los últimos partidos como titular.

"De mi lado no hay ningún tipo de inconveniente con el entrenador, yo vine a este club para aportar lo mío desde el lugar que me toque", afirmó el atacante en conferencia de prensa. Y agregó: "Para mí, lo más importante es estar a disposición, la semana pasada hemos tenido una charla con el entrenador, me explicó los motivos y las razones por las cuales no era titular, fue muy claro conmigo el entrenador, nunca hubo motivo de discusión".

"Nunca he pedido explicaciones, me las dio por obligación, quiso ser claro conmigo. Prioriza jugadores que aportan otras características para el funcionamiento del equipo. Y sabe que de mi lado no hay ningún tipo de inconveniente. Esto fue antes del partido contra Colón y después las cosas se dieron en buena manera", comentó el goleador cuyo pase pertenece a River, que en el último partido llegó a los 300 goles en su carrera.

Sobre esa marca que consiguió, Trezeguet dijo: "En lo personal estoy contento por diferentes motivos, el primero por haber jugado cuarenta y cinco minutos, que hacía bastante tiempo que no tenía esa posibilidad, y aportando dos goles. Que me dieron la oportunidad de llegar a un objetivo muy preciso para mi a lo largo de mi carrera como son los 300 goles. No son pocos a nivel profesional, me siento muy feliz y por toda la gente que estuvo a mi lado, familiares y amigos".

A continuación, llegó el turno de hablar sobre San Lorenzo, el próximo rival y escolta. "Vamos a enfrentar a un equipo donde también predomina el buen fútbol y será una meta importante para nosotros tratar de volver a la victoria después de algunos partidos en los que no la pudimos conseguir. Igualmente, el equipo está a la altura de este campeonato. Contra Colón obtuvimos un punto importante para seguir sumando y continuar primeros. Creo que ante San Lorenzo será un partido abierto", pronosticó el delantero.

TENDRÁ SU HOMENAJE EN JUVENTUS

El atacante franco argentino de Newell´s Old Boys, David Trezeguet, anunció hoy que el próximo 14 de diciembre la Juventus de Italia le hará un homenaje por sus diez años en el club de Turín.

"El 14 de diciembre estaré presente en un homenaje que me hará la Juventus. Me ha llamado su presidente y propietario que es Andrea Agnelli y le había hecho la promesa a su público de que volvería para darle un saludo al club que me ha dado prácticamente todo. Allí me siento muy atado, marcando diferentes cosas como ser el mejor goleador extranjero de este club tan importante", expresó el delantero.

Trezeguet dijo además que para 2014 la idea es jugar un partido entre Newell´s y Juventus.

"La idea es que al final del próximo año hagamos un partido, le conté de Newell´s al presidente de la Juventus y que su técnico (Gerardo Martino) está en el Barcelona. Ahora no se pudo dar por una cuestión de calendario de ambos equipos que no coinciden", señaló el delantero.

Cavenaghi quiere volver a River

BUENOS AIRES -- El delantero argentino de Pachuca de México Fernando Cavenaghi expresó el martes sus ganas de volver a River Plate, donde se inició como futbolista, y señaló que a partir de diciembre "habrá un cambio" en el club, en referencia a las elecciones, que ayudaría para su regreso.
"Es el escenario ideal volver a River. Luego del 15 de diciembre, va a ver un cambio y River volverá a ser lo que era; ojalá se dé", apuntó Cavenaghi, en diálogo por radio 9, quien a partir del lunes pasará a la condición de jugador libre por su decisión de no renovar con el club mexicano.

Cavenaghi, de 30 años, tiene diferencias con el actual presidente de River, Daniel Passarella, quien aún no definió si buscará la reelección, pero el goleador deslizó que el club tendrá un nuevo titular a partir del 15 de diciembre.

"Está claro que con Passarella como presidente no puedo volver. Siempre dije que de regresar a la Argentina iba jugar en River", agregó Cavenaghi.

El delantero oriundo de O`Brien, quien se inició como profesional en River en el 2000, señaló que siente "orgullo" porque su nombre suene como posible refuerzo para el año que viene.

En tanto, el Torito reiteró su deseo de jugar en ataque junto al colombiano Teófilo Gutiérrez: "Con él haría buena dupla porque se tira atrás".

Fernando Cavenaghi inició su carrera en River y luego defendió los colores de Spartak de Moscú de Rusia (2004-2006), Burdeos de Francia (2007-2010), Mallorca de España (2010), Inter de Brasil (2011) y Villarreal de España (2012).

"El próximo domingo termino mi contrato con Pachuca y ya arreglamos con la dirigencia que no jugaré el último partido del campeonato, para evitar el riesgo de una lesión", precisó.

El Cavego` tuvo un primer regreso a River para colaborar en el retorno a primera división, pero tras esta conquista debió partir envuelto en una polémica con Pasarella y el técnico de entonces, Matías Almeyda, junto a su compañero Alejandro Domínguez.

"Se habló mucho del tema y a veces se tergiversan algunas cosas. Con Almeyda me junté a hablar, aclaramos las cosas y seguimos adelante", puntualizó.

"Y en México me fue regular, porque con el equipo no clasificamos a la Liguilla por el campeonato. Pero además me costó la adaptación, tanto en lo futbolístico como en lo personal. Me afectó el tema de la altura y de la vida diaria. Apenas hice algunos goles", reconoció.

El 21 de septiembre Cavenaghi cumplió 30 años y ahora sueña con una nueva primavera en el Monumental, ataviado con los colores que lo identifican de por vida.

"El próximo domingo voy a estar regresando a la Argentina. Voy a ver si hablo con Andrés D`alessandro, porque hace mucho que no lo hago", precisó.

Daniel Passarella no buscará la reelección en River

BUENOS AIRES -- Daniel Passarella anunció el martes a sus allegados que desistió de presentarse para la reelección como presidente de River Plate.
Aproximadamente a las 17.30 comenzó el martes en el Monumental la reunión del bloque oficialista y en ese cónclave el Kaiser le comunicó a sus compañeros de comisión directiva cuál será su postura con respecto a la elecciones que se concretarán en el la entidad de Núñez el 15 del mes próximo.

Esta medida de ninguna manera afectará la continuidad del entrenador Ramón Díaz al frente del plantel profesional, dado que recientemente renovó su contrato hasta diciembre de 2015 y todavía dispone de consenso entre los candidatos para conducir el club en el próximo ciclo.

A quien le abre las puertas esta resolución del actual presidente es al delantero Fernando Cavenaghi, quien acaba de anunciar a que fin de año no prolongará su vínculo con el Pachuca mexicano.

El vicepresidente segundo de la entidad, Omar Solassi, le confirmó la novedad a Télam tras la reunión del bloque oficialista, donde Passarella anunció que no iba ser parte de las elecciones que se llevarán a cabo el 15 de diciembre y que su mandato culminará en diciembre.

Al comunicar su decisión, el Kaiser destacó que lo hacía debido a que "prioriza su familia" antes que al club y porque "no tenía fuerzas para seguir peleando".

En su momento, Passarella había anunciado que "si era para perder no se iba a presentar" y las encuestas, que encabezan los candidatos Antonio Caselli y Rodolfo D`Onofrio, no lo habrían favorecido para intentar la reelección.
Una pista de esta decisión se había deslizado en un acto partidario, el 3 de octubre, que se realizó ante unas 3.000 personas en Costa Salguero, donde el ´Kaiser´ había reconocido que iba a comunicar su postura "en 15 días" luego de consultarlo en "la intimidad de la familia".

De cara a la carrera presidencial, en una encuesta efectuada sobre 1.120 socios, en condiciones de votar, Caselli tenía un 36,80 por ciento de intención de voto contra un 22,10 de D`Onofrio y un 8,9 de Passarella, que no se presentará.

Liga MX Preview: Final three play-off spots up for grabs

Morelia, Queretaro, Tigres UANL, Tijuana and Chiapas will battle it out for the remaining three Liga MX play-off spots this weekend.

With the final round of the Apertura phase approaching, five clubs have sewn up their post-season places, with America and Santos Laguna guaranteed first and second spots respectively for the knockout stages.

Cruz Azul, Leon and Toluca are also through, but only two points separate third and fifth, meaning the final weekend can still determine final placings.

The bottom half of the eight is not settled either, with Sergio Bueno´s Chiapas (25 points) all but certain of a finals berth, given they are three points clear of ninth-placed Tigres (22).

Chiapas would be guaranteed their finals spot if Tigres fail to beat 15th-placed Atlas on the road, but can assure themselves with at least a point away to bottom club Atlante.

Morelia (24) welcome 11th-placed Puebla, who are out of the play-offs race, while Queretaro (23) occupy eighth spot ahead of their trip to 14th-placed Pachuca.

Tijuana must hope two of Tigres, Queretaro and Morelia lose, while they also must get the three points away to Leon to get themselves a final-eight spot.

In other matches, Santos Laguna can bounce back from a last-start loss to Chiapas at home to 12th side Veracruz.

Leaders America host Toluca, while Monterrey will welcome Guadalajara and third-placed Cruz Azul will visit Pumas UNAM to round out the regular season

Seeking balance across South America

There are very few FIFA dates left before squads assemble for next year´s World Cup -- just March 5 next year and the two dates later this month.

That makes these coming friendlies especially important. A glance at the players called up is an insight into the mind of the coach. What does he want to have a look at? What are the areas which are giving him sleepless nights?

In the case of Argentina, it is obviously the defence. Coach Alejandro Sabella has said that there are times when the opponents attack when the only thing he can do is shut his eyes and pray. It is an inevitable consequence of selecting a team with such an attacking balance. In an ideal world, Sabella would almost certainly go about things differently. But he is blessed with an embarrassment of attacking riches. Including Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero, Gonzalo Higuain and Angel Di Maria in the same starting lineup clearly puts a strain on his defensive unit.

Sabella would seem to be indicating, though, that this is not the only problem. Yes, his defence is always likely to be left exposed. But no, perhaps he does not have undying confidence in the individual quality of his defenders. Why else include, at this late stage, three new centre backs in his squad?

Nicolas Otamendi went to the last World Cup, where the decision to improvise him as a right back was probably unfair and certainly not a success. Sabella included him in the squad when he first took over, but he was soon discarded. Now, for the games against Ecuador and Bosnia, he is brought back for the first time in two years. Also included are Facundo Roncaglia of Fiorentina, and left-footed Lucas Orban of Bordeaux.

Is Sabella perhaps thinking of experimenting with a back three formation? It would be a possible explanation for the influx of these defensive reinforcements.

Argentina´s first opponents have also made an important defensive change. Ecuador´s defence has floundered since the days of Ivan Hurtado, a wonderfully classy centre back who nipped the ball off many an attacker´s toes with the air of an imperious old-time schoolmaster correcting an errant student. Hurtado has never been adequately replaced. Perhaps the closest that Ecuador have come in recent years is Jayro Campos, whose career has been blighted by injuries. Now, after several months out with an Achilles tendon problem, Campos has been fast-tracked straight back into the squad.

Chile, meanwhile, also parade a team whose balance is tipped firmly toward attack. With matches against England and Brazil they are throwing themselves in at the deep end, daring their opponents to take advantage of their defensive weakness. It is a sign of the self-esteem built up since electric little Argentine coach Jorge Sampaoli took over for the triumphant run in toward World Cup qualification.

There are no new defenders in the Chile squad. They go with what they have, almost certainly with Gary Medel, Cardiff City´s little pit bull of a defensive midfielder, improvised in the back line. But it is at the other end of the field that Sampaoli´s selection is so interesting; there is no place for a number-nine style centre-forward. Both Humberto Suazo and Mauricio Pinilla have been left out. Instead, Sampaoli appears increasingly convinced of the virtues of playing two quick, talented and mobile strikers ready to cut in from the flanks -- Alexis Sanchez and Eduardo Vargas -- with playmaker Jorge Valdivia operating as a false nine. Valdivia´s achievements have not always matched his undoubted ability. It will be fascinating to see how he performs against two difficult opponents.

And attack is also the most interesting aspect of the Brazil squad, who will take on Honduras in Miami before heading north to Toronto to meet the Chileans.

True, the goalkeeping position is also under the microscope. Julio Cesar, still out of match practice in England with Queens Park Rangers, is named once more -- though coach Luiz Felipe Scolari has made it clear that Victor, of Libertadores champions Atletico Mineiro, will be given his chance in the opening match.

Perhaps the biggest shock was the recall of Robinho, whose form at Milan would not seem to make an unanswerable case for inclusion. Scolari praised the versatility of the one-time wonderkid, pointing out that Robinho can be useful in every position across the attacking line, including that of a false nine.

This is an interesting departure for a coach known to favour a target man centre-forward -- indeed one of the first things Scolari did on taking the Brazil job was to restore the figure of the traditional number nine. But now the only player of that type in the squad is Jo, also of Atletico Mineiro -- a far better player than the unhappy misfit remembered by fans of Manchester City and Everton, but nonetheless not a name likely to strike fear in the hearts of the world´s top defenders.

First choice Fred, the hero of the Confederations Cup triumph, has once more gone down with a long-term injury, forcing Scolari to have a look at his options. The decision to give Robinho another chance would appear to indicate that Brazil are suddenly feeling a little insecure with this department of their team -- a suspicion boosted still further by their furious reaction to the option of Atletico Madrid´s in-form Diego Costa to throw in his lot with Spain.

Can Robinho really help the Selecao?

Robinho´s worked hard to find a way back into the Brazilian fold. Yet he still has much to do if he´s to feature at a third World Cup.

It´s no surprise that the Diego Costa affair drew a lot of extra attention to the announcement of Brazil´s list for their final squad call-up of 2013. But the fuss caused by the forced exclusion of the Atletico Madrid´s striker after his decision to "go Spanish" ended up diverting attention from a name that should raised a few eyebrows for the exact opposite reason: Robinho is back in the Selecao fold.

At 29, and 15 months after he last dressed (at least officially) in Selecao gear, the Milan forward is the big intangible that Luiz Felipe Scolari will be taking to Miami and Toronto for games against Honduras and Chile this November.

And so, out of the blue, Robinho gets a chance to squeeze in and potentially feature in his third World Cup. Never mind that his presence on the list was more accidental than planned. While Big Phil pretty much expected Costa´s defection and had announced his call-up much more as psychological warfare, he actually looks short in options upfront. Having apparently given up on the lack of bite by Alexandre Pato and Lucas Moura -- plus the talismanic Fred has been nursing a thigh injury since early September -- the manager needed some cover.

The timing could not be better for Robinho, either, as the former Real Madrid man was one the best players on the pitch in Milan´s quite convincing performance against Barcelona in the Champions League, just two days before Big Phil´s announcement. But there is an interesting caveat here: according to FIFA rules, national teams need to give at least 15 days´ notice to clubs. Therefore, Robinho must have already been on Scolari´s plans, an obvious reinforcement in the experience front.

It´s old news that Big Phil still thinks the Selecao needs more seasoned characters -- especially for a home World Cup that carries even higher expectations after the team´s triumphant Confederations Cup display. He has tried it with Ronaldinho and Kaka but seems to have not liked the result given that the pair have both since disappeared. Robinho, on the other hand, started this World Cup cycle alongside Neymar, featuring in the first post-2010 World Cup game and starting all the games in Brazil´s pitiful 2011 Copa America campaign.

But after a defeat to Germany in Stuttgart, he fell out of favor with then-manager Mano Menezes, who seemed like many convinced that Robinho´s best Selecao days were behind him. And few seemed to disagree, although Robinho would end the 2011/12 with 40 appearances and 10 goals for Milan. It just that people perhaps had grown tired of expecting bigger things from the forward.

Sold to Real Madrid in 2005 after winning Santos FC´s first Brazilian national titles since the days of Pele, Robinho failed to live up to the immense hype. He did have a more than decent run in his three years in Spain, finishing only behind Raul and Ruud van Nistelrooy in the scoring charts. Then came a lot of sulking and tantrums, as well as a British transfer record move (at the time) to Manchester City. It all ended badly again and it was quite a surprise when Milan came to the rescue in August 2010. Since then, he´s been as maddeningly inconsistent as usual at Milanello, twice almost departing the club to return to Brazil. In his home country, it was all seen as a huge pantomime. And nobody really took it seriously when earlier this season, in a TV interview, he vowed to earn a call-up. One guess Robinho had the last giggle last week.

With two World Cups on his CV and 88 games for Brazil, Robinho is one of the most capped active Selecao players and still has a thing or two to tell younger teammates. The Milan forward is also known as "one of the lads," an easy guy to be around. Take a look at Scolari´s 2002 World Cup squad and one will see that it wasn´t solely composed of star performers or players whose contributions would directly link to the field of play. Exhibit A and B: Vampeta and Edilson.

Other Dark Horses

Kaka: Scolari´s huffing and puffing on the sidelines when the player made mistakes during a friendly with Russia this past March suggested the manager had run out of patience with the 2007 World Player of the Year. But few players are as respected by peers and media as Kaka. If he settles at Milan, ruling him out of the group on experience grounds could be premature.

Rafinha: Logic says he should have already got called up if Scolari really wanted to test the Bayern Munich right-back. Besides, Maicon seems to have filled well the needs as Dani Alves´ understudy. However, if Rafinha keeps getting games under Guardiola, he could earn a last-ditch chance to shine at the only friendly before the World Cup (against South Africa in March).

Philippe Coutinho: Injury has made his plight even more difficult -- and things could get harder if Willian, called up for the November friendlies, does well. But with six months before the World Cup cut-off date, a good run at Liverpool could definitely keep Coutinho´s hopes up.

Eriksson slams “absurd” El Tri setup in new book

Sven-Goran Eriksson has lifted the lid on his time with Mexico´s national team in his new autobiography "Sven: My Story," criticizing the way El Tri is run.

Eriksson writes of his disbelief that he was made to report regularly on national team matters to Mexican first division club owners, indicating it would be "unthinkable" for the same to have happened in England.

"It was absurd," he writes. "I could not report to several different people who all had different interests. I´d always been clear that I wanted to report to one person ... but that´s not how it works in Mexico.

"There it was important to make allies with the people high up in the football establishment, as if that would help the national team win games."

The book -- out on Tuesday -- comes at a time when the role of club owners in the national team has once again come to the fore, after Mexico´s disastrous World Cup qualifying campaign and with El Tri facing a playoff against New Zealand to reach Brazil 2014.

And with Mexican federation president Justino Compean also under fire for another World Cup cycle that has seen four different coaches at the helm, Eriksson reveals that Compean told him in their first meeting that Javier Aguirre was the preferred choice for the job in 2008, but that the Mexican was unavailable due to his role as Atletico Madrid coach.

"I had always been first choice in my previous jobs," writes Eriksson.

The Swede adds that his annual salary was almost two million euros per year (not including bonuses) and that the stated aim was to reach the World Cup quarterfinal.

But, complains Eriksson, "I had enemies in Mexican football from the first day to the last."

The former Lazio boss clearly enjoyed living in Mexico in his vast apartment in the upmarket Polanco neighborhood in Mexico City and was impressed by the level of soccer the country had to offer.

"The quality of football was at a higher level than expected and interest in the game was enormous," he states. "Around the clock people talked about football."

But the thing Eriksson returns to repeatedly is his incredulity that owners had such power to meddle in his job.

"It was more or less the club owners that decided how the national team should be run, at least that´s how things ran before I got there," he writes.

Eriksson reserves particular ire for Chivas owner Jorge Vergara, whom he had to meet to explain the Feb. 11, 2009, loss to the United States in Columbus, Ohio.

Eriksson says, "It was almost like I was answering accusations at some kind of tribunal," and adds that Vergara demanded to know why the goalkeeping coach hadn´t been fired and why the team stayed in a certain hotel.

"Each question was dumber than the next," opines the current manager of Chinese club Guangzhou.

In other CONCACAF tidbits, Eriksson reveals his frustration at U.S. Soccer playing that World Cup qualifier in a freezing Columbus, Ohio, but adds that Mexico also carried out such "dirty tricks," such as playing Canada in intense Chiapas heat in September 2008.

"That´s how things were done in CONCACAF," says Eriksson.

The 65-year-old also claims that current U.S. Soccer president Sunil Gulati tried to recruit him as that country´s national team coach ahead of the 1994 World Cup in the U.S., before Bora Milutinovic was hired.

Bringing it back south of the border, Eriksson was left with a positive impression of Mexico and Mexicans as a whole and was still confident after he was fired that he could´ve turned qualifying for the 2010 World Cup around.

"[Mexicans] were very polite, which is something that stood in stark contrast to the negative image of Mexico that is generally broadcast around the world," writes Eriksson.
