Liga MX Wrap: Morelia, Queretaro, Tigres UANL clinch play-off spots

Morelia, Queretaro and Tigres UANL sealed their Liga MX play-off spots with wins in the final round of Apertura fixtures this weekend.

Going into the last round of games of the opening phase of the season, the trio were battling it out with Tijuana and Chiapas for the right to join America, Santos Laguna, Cruz Azul, Leon and Toluca in the play-offs.

And they all picked up vital 1-0 victories, with Morelia beating Puebla at home on Saturday, while Queretaro and Tigres UANL won at Pachuca and Atlas respectively on Sunday.

Fellow hopefuls Tijuana were hammered 5-0 at Leon, while Chiapas lost 2-0 at Atlante.

Morelia finish the Apertura in sixth spot thanks to Enrique Perez´s injury-time winner at the Estadio Generalisimo Jose Maria Morelos y Pavon.

There was also late drama in Queretaro´s victory at Pachuca, as Wilberto Cosme´s 90th-minute strike secured seventh for Ignacio Ambriz´s side.

Tigres UANL, meanwhile, took full advantage of Chiapas´ defeat to leapfrog them into eighth thanks to Facundo Erpen´s second-half own goal at the Estadio Jalisco.

Elsewhere, Apertura leaders America made it three games without a win as they dropped points at home in the Liga MX for the first time this season in a 1-1 draw with Toluca on Saturday.

Former Sunderland and Real Zaragoza defender Paulo da Silva gave the visitors the lead in first-half injury time, before Narciso Mina spared America´s blushes with an equaliser 68 minutes in.

Second-placed Santos Laguna were also held to a home draw, as they twice had to come from behind to finish 2-2 against Veracruz.

Cristian Martinez Borja put Veracruz ahead in the first half, before Javier Arozco equalised with 82 minutes gone. Oscar Mascorro promptly restored the away side´s lead before Eduardo Herrera snatched a point for Santos in the last minute.

Elsewhere, bottom-placed Pumas UNAM fought back from two goals down to earn a creditable 2-2 draw at home to Cruz Azul, while Monterrey came from a goal behind to beat Guadalajara 2-1.

Herediano continued their strong form as they thrashed UCR 4-1 in the Costa Rica Primera Division on Sunday.

It only took five minutes for Herediano to open the scoring through Dave Myrie before Minor Diaz doubled the lead in the 20th minute.

UCR did a pull a goal back through Jameson Scott on 65 minutes but Anllel Porras restored Herediano´s two-goal advantage two minutes later.

An 85th-minute penalty to Victor Nunez rounded off a comfortable victory that lifted Herediano one point clear at the top of the division on 42 points.

Second-placed Alajuelense (41 points) knocked Deportivo Saprissa (40) out of top spot with a comfortable 3-0 home win.

A first-half goal to Porfiro Lopez got Alajuelense going before the scoreline was added to in the second-half by Jerry Palacios and Johan Venegas.

Bottom-placed Belen Siglo XXI threw away a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 with Cartagines.

Siglo led 2-0 at the 77th minute mark after Heiner Mora´s brace but were stunned by two goals in four minutes to Cartagines.

Venezuela Primera Division Wrap: Carabobo go top after Caracas, Anzoategui slip

Carabobo jumped to the top of the Venezuela Primera Division with a 3-1 victory against bottom-placed Yaracuyanos.

Juan Guerra opened the scoring for Carabobo in the 29th minute before Pablo Olivera doubled the advantage on 40 minutes.

The third goal was scored in the 59th minute through Omar Perdomo with Yaracuyanos´ Rafael Rodriguez securing a consolation goal on 71 minutes.

Carabobo were in third place at the start of the round but profited from Caracas´ 2-2 draw with Deportivo Petare and Deportivo Anzoategui´s 4-3 loss at Mineros de Guayana.

Caracas went behind in the 25th minute after Armando Maita found the net before second-half strikes to Roberto Tucker and Rubert Quijada secured a lead.

But Maita popped up on 83 minutes to equalise for Deportivo Petare and deny Caracas the chance to lead the division.

Anzoategui led twice 1-0 and 2-1 in the first-half but were shocked by Mineros striker Ricardo Blanco scoring a hat-trick in nine minutes - with the first coming on the stroke of half-time.

Edwin Aguiliar pulled a goal back for Anzoategui in the 83rd minute but they could not find an equaliser.

It is tight at the top of the division with Carabobo (27 points) leading Caracas, Mineros and Anzoategui, who are all on 26 points.

Uruguay Primera Division Wrap: Danubio go top, Nacional concede five

Danubio moved to the top of the Uruguay Primera Division after producing a last-gasp 2-1 win over Fenix on Sunday.

Leonardo Ramos´ side took advantage of a slip-up from previous leaders Nacional – who lost 5-3 at Defensor Sporting on Thursday – with their home triumph over the struggling Fenix.

They made an ideal start, scoring inside the first minute thanks to striker Jonathan Alvez, but were pegged back on the stroke of half-time.

Hernan Novick was the scorer for the visitors, netting a 44th-minute penalty, setting up an interesting second half in Montevideo.

Danubio pressed for the goal with a series of attacking substitutions but they left it exceptionally late, with Alvez´s second – which came in the fourth minute of stoppage time – proving the difference between the two sides.

River Plate also climbed above Nacional courtesy of a 3-2 home win over Juventud de las Piedras.

Twice River had given away leads, with Renzo Pozzi and Jonathan Blanes cancelling out goals from Martin Alaniz and Michael Santos for the hosts.

But Lucas Olaza struck the killer blow, with his 83rd-minute effort moving River into second.

Danubio, River and Nacional have all enjoyed spells at the top of the table this season, with the unpredictable nature of the season continuing on Thursday.

Nacional seemed set for victory thanks to Alvaro Recoba´s fifth-minute strike but Defensor had other ideas, scoring five times in an incredible final 25 minutes.

Giorgian De Arrascaeta initially levelled proceedings in the 66th minute, before Ignacio Risso fired them ahead from the penalty spot.

Felipe Conceicao then made it three for Defensor, only for Ivan Alonso to score a penalty with three minutes to play for Nacional.

Felipe´s fourth – quickly followed by another Risso penalty – did the job for the home side, but Gonzalo Ramos still found time to respond in a crazy end to the match.

At the other end of the table, rock-bottom Miramar Misiones fell to a 4-2 defeat against the Montevideo Wanderers on Saturday.

Other fixtures on Saturday saw giants Penarol concede twice in the last 15 minutes to lose 2-1 at Sud America, while Rentistas and Liverpool played out a goalless draw.

And also on Sunday, the league´s top scorer Hector Acuna grabbed a double as Cerro won 3-2 at El Tanque Sisley, while Cerro Largo edged Racing CM 1-0 thanks to Fabricio Nunez´s strike.

Catolica found themselves 2-0 down midway through the first-half after goals from Jonny Uchuari and Fabio Renato.

Strikes in either half to Alex Pinillo and Gustavo Nazareno saw Macara grab their first victory in 10 games.

Deportivo Capiata missed a chance to move closer to Paraguay Division Profesional leaders Cerro Porteno after a 2-1 loss to Libertad.

With Cerro Porteno´s goalless draw against Olimpia, three points for Capiata would have seen the deficit reduced to seven points.

But Libertad had other ideas as they went ahead through Jorge Moreira in the sixth minute and Miguel Samudio doubled the advantage on 25 minutes.

Captiata rallied late and mounted a fight-back after Cristian Lopez´s 71st-minute goal but ultimately could not force their way back into the match.
