Argentina Primera Division Wrap: San Lorenzo top, Newell´s fail again

San Lorenzo have overhauled Newell´s Old Boys at the top of the Argentina Primera Division after the former leaders failed to win again.

Tigre extended Newell´s Old Boys´ winless streak to five games with a 2-1 victory on Monday, which allowed San Lorenzo to stay top of the table following their 4-2 victory over Belgrano.

Juan Antonio Pizzi´s San Lorenzo team moved to 30 points from 16 rounds, while Newell´s remain on 29 after three draws and two defeats in their past five matches.

With three rounds remaining in the Argentine Torneo Inicial, Lanus (28 points) claimed their fifth straight victory to stay within two points of San Lorenzo in third, while Arsenal are also on 28 points in fourth.

At San Lorenzo´s Estadio Pedro Bidegain, the home side took the lead in just the third minute thanks to Emanuel Mas´ thunderous strike into the roof of the net.

It was 2-0 in the 10th minute when Ignacio Piatti cut the ball back for Angel Correa to finish through the legs of Belgrano goalkeeper Juan Olave but the visitors hit back just before the half-hour mark through Cesar Pereyra.

Belgrano drew level in the 60th minute when San Lorenzo´s Pablo Alvarado put the ball into his own net but three minutes later the hosts were ahead again when Piatti won and converted a penalty.

San Lorenzo wrapped up their win on Saturday, and took a step towards the Torneo Inicial title, when Mauro Cetto volleyed home Leandro Romagnoli´s 72nd-minute corner.

Tigre stunned Newell´s on Monday after initially trailing the reigning Torneo Final champions.

Fabian Munoz put Newell´s in front in the 20th minute but Tigre were level at half-time following Sebastian Rusculleda´s strike 10 minutes before the break.

A penalty to Angel Diaz in the 64th minute saw Tigre win and move up to 14th on the Primera Division table.

Lanus had to come from two goals adrift to continue their winning streak, overcoming All Boys 3-2, while Arsenal held on to triumph by the same scoreline against Boca Juniors.

In other results, Olimpo won 3-1 away to River Plate, Velez Sarsfield defeated Rosario Central 3-2, Quilmes drew 1-1 with Racing Club, Godoy Cruz prevailed 2-1 against Estudiantes and Gimnasia La Plata held Argentinos Juniors to a scoreless draw.

The clash between Colon and Atletico Rafaela was postponed.

As expectations grow, Colombia remain a work in progress

Ahead of the World Cup, Colombia left an impressive calling card last Thursday with a 2-0 win away to Belgium. It was a score line to make the world sit up and take notice but one that could also cause Colombia a few problems.

Time and time again, Colombian football has found it hard to cope with the euphoria resulting from good results and performances. The biggest example, of course, is the 1994 World Cup side, which was picked out by Pele as one of the tournament favourites after inflicting on Argentina their first home defeat in qualification -- by the stunning margin of 5-0.

History records, of course, that Colombia were among the first teams to be eliminated from the World Cup, and that soon afterward, tragically and senselessly, defender Andres Escobar, who had scored an own goal against the United States, was murdered in Medellin.

Many different factors combine to explain this terrible event and the failure of what was an outstanding team but one of them was the difficulty of dealing with the hopes that had been engendered by that emphatic triumph over Argentina.

Five years later, at the 1999 Copa America, Colombia won all three group games. Tournament favourites? No, they were knocked out by Chile in the quarterfinal.

They won the next edition of the tournament, in 2001, without conceding a goal. Surely the team would go on to power through the final stages of qualification for the next year’s World Cup? Instead they sagged back and missed out.

But my favourite example of Colombia´s failing to live up to expectations comes from the South American Under-23 Championships at the start of 2000.

Colombia had played well during the group stage and, to make the decisive second round, just had to avoid defeat by a five-goal margin in their final game against hosts Brazil. On the eve of the match, I interviewed coach Javier Alvarez.

“It is not Colombia who need to worry about Brazil,” he told me. “It is Brazil who need to worry about Colombia.”

Alvarez left his best players on the bench -- and watched on in agony as his team lost 9-0. He was immediately sacked.

The current coach, former Argentina boss Jose Pekerman, is far too experienced to trip up on the same banana skin. He can be counted on to damp down any excesses of euphoria and he will certainly be reminding his men that World Cups are not won with victories in friendlies. It is always a mistake to read too much into such results, especially when the outcome could have been different.

Belgium, for example, smacked the post on two separate occasions and also wasted some other good opportunities.

The Colombian centre backs found it very hard to cope with the aerial threat of Aston Villa’s Christian Benteke which, on another day, could easily have cost a couple of goals. Tuesday’s game away to the dangerous Dutch will be another fascinating test of Colombia’s defensive capacities.

There is also the sense that, in an ideal world, Pekerman would love to pick a team of 12 players. Much of this stems from the characteristics of Radamel Falcao Garcia. So wonderfully alive in front of goal, the centre forward is not particularly proficient at linking with others and joining in build-up play.

Thus, Pekerman is reluctant to play the Monaco man up front on his own. His usual strike partner is Teofilo Gutierrez, who is well able to work the channels. Against Belgium, Pekerman gave young Luis Muriel a chance.

Whoever is chosen alongside Falcao, playing two strikers puts a strain on the midfield quartet. Colombia played some of their best football in qualification with a pair of attacking midfielders operating in tandem; the superbly talented young left footer, James Rodriguez, and Macnelly Torres, whose ability to thread a pass places him in the great tradition of Carlos Valderrama as a No. 10.

However, with only four midfielders, Pekerman seems inclined to the view that Torres becomes a luxury he cannot always afford. He can certainly not have both Torres and the width and trickery of Juan Guillermo Cuadrado.

Thus, Torres is reduced to the role of substitute and the quartet is comprised of Rodriguez and Cuadrado, with Carlos Sanchez as the holding midfielder and Aldo Leao Ramirez (or Abel Aguilar) in a mixed role alongside him.

Perhaps a solution offered itself against Belgium. After coming on for Muriel with just more than half an hour to go, Victor Ibarbo crowned his first international match in three years with a splendid goal, Colombia’s second.

In addition, the Cagliari player impressed with his strength, skill and versatility, which means he can stretch an opposing defence by operating as a winger on either flank, while also dropping back to help out in midfield.

Perhaps with Ibarbo in the starting lineup there is a chance of a five-man midfield behind Falcao, which would not only give increased defensive solidity but also supply extra options for associative short passes through the centre, which are always a characteristic of the best Colombian sides.

Curiously, Messi´s injury is Argentina´s gain

Lionel Messi has brushed off far worse. Jose Caro´s tackle was a breath too late, his leg stretched a little too far. Still, he did not make much contact. It was hardly brutal. It seemed like nothing. But his victim had needed to shift his body, to speed up, just a little to avoid the contact, and that was what did the damage.

Three minutes later, after less than a quarter of Barcelona´s game at Real Betis, the world´s best footballer was trudging disconsolately from the pitch. His replacement, Andres Iniesta, gave him a hug and offered a few words of encouragement. Betis manager Pepe Mel patted Messi on the head. He walked down into the dugout, and out of shot. We did not know it then, but he had torn a muscle in his left thigh. We did not know it then, but that is the last we will see of Lionel Messi this year.

Nobody gets injured quite like Lionel Messi. Not that he gets injured a lot, of course -- not since Pep Guardiola, upon his appointment at Barcelona, tasked physio Juanjo Brau with monitoring Messi´s every move -- and not that he has ever, really, been injured seriously. Indeed, the remarkable goal-scoring statistics of both the Argentine and his Real Madrid counterpoint, Cristiano Ronaldo, are a tribute not only to their talent but also to their durability.

But whenever Messi does pick up a niggle, whenever he does miss a few games, the news is greeted with the sort of fearful panic that would normally attend reports that the Pope has been taken ill or a member of One Direction has been challenged with unusual ferocity by an Aston Villa striker. Garments are rent, hair is torn, nails are chewed, and the doom-mongers crow that he will never be the same again.

It has been just like this recently, too. Fernando Signorini, a member of Diego Maradona´s medical staff while he was manager of Argentina, has warned that "someone behind the scenes needs to understand that [Messi] needs to be managed" because the 26-year-old´s desire to play all the time could place his long-term health in jeopardy. Others have claimed that Barcelona´s decision to promote Brau above his day-to-day duties as Messi’s personal physician to a more senior role has interrupted the player’s routine.

That has brought a forthright response from Messi, from Barcelona and from those who are keen to downplay the significance of his injury. He admits the setback has made him "sad," but blamed it on nothing more than bad luck. "There was nothing strange behind it, nothing to look for," he told Ole, the Argentine newspaper. "People talk about these things without knowing what they are talking about. It is not true. A load of things are invented."

Barcelona technical director Andoni Zubizarreta has moved to assure fans that nothing has changed in terms of Messi´s routine despite Brau´s promotion. Former Barca defender Miguel Angel Nadal intoned in El Mundo Deportivo his belief that Messi can follow the example of his nephew, tennis player Rafa Nadal, to recover from injury and reclaim his status as the world´s best player. Current teammates Jose Manuel Pinto and Jordi Alba have said much the same.

Nobody gets injured quite like Messi: for every note of panic, fear or anxiety, there is a soothing voice whispering sweet certainties and offering hope. The problem is that sometimes there´s so much noise that it is impossible to separate the two.

Messi being injured is a bad thing. It is a bad thing for Barcelona because he is their best player. It is a bad thing for football in general because wherever you feel he belongs in the pantheon, he is the sort of footballer we will all tell our grandchildren we saw, and we have only a comparatively short time to appreciate his gifts.

Most of all, it is a bad thing for Messi because he likes playing football -- that is not in doubt – and the problem with the human body is that it is never like it was before. Every single time you get an injury, that muscle, joint or bone is weaker than it used to be -- a single, inevitable truth that is complicated by the fact that other muscles, joints and bones will then pick up the slack, placing them at an increased risk of becoming overburdened. Messi may not always look it, but he is human. No amount of sports science can change that.

But there is a positive in all of this. And that is for Argentina. National team manager Alejandro Sabella -- the latest man to be tasked with the job of enabling Messi to win the World Cup, which is seen by most as his birthright -- would not admit it, but the idea of his wonderful burden having a two-month break in the middle of the season is, well, kind of a good thing.

There are caveats, of course: This is the third injury Messi has had this season, and if that trend continues upon his return in the New Year, then Sabella -- like everyone else -- would have cause for considerable concern. But if this is it, if this proper break means Messi starts again in January, rested and relaxed, then make no mistake: Sabella is a beneficiary.

It is anachronistic to suggest that Messi needs to win a World Cup to be eligible for a nomination as the greatest player ever; the gold standard of football now is the Champions League, where the elite face each other every year (at least) rather than the quadrennial tournament that made legends of Pele, Maradona, Johan Cruyff and Franz Beckenbauer. But that does not mean Messi does not want to win it; more importantly, it does not mean that Argentina do not want to win it, either. The Albiceleste have not done so since 1986, and the 2014 World Cup is in Brazil. Argentina want to win it, all right, and to do that, Sabella needs a fully fit Messi.

The problem for Sabella´s predecessors -- Jose Pekerman in 2006 and Maradona himself in 2010 -- is that Messi has not always reached the end of the season fully fit. Not injured, of course; just, well, exhausted. While it´s true that he played only 25 times during the 2005-06 season as a relative rookie, since 2008 he has played 51, 53, 55, 60 and 50 games for Barcelona.

He would not have it any other way, of course, but it would be counterintuitive to the point of absurdity to suggest that the number of club games you play doesn´t affect how you do in an end-of-season tournament. Spain´s success in the past five years -- coupled with Barcelona´s -- suggests it is not always fatal, but their style almost certainly helps. And besides, even they have had moments in each of those tournaments when the fatigue seemed to be setting in.

This season, because of his injury, Messi will not have nearly so many miles on his legs. Much has fallen into place for him with Argentina recently -- Sabella has changed the team´s approach at Messi’s behest, playing with three up front and encouraging his side to press higher -- and it has borne fruit. Messi, for one, seems much more effective for his nation now. It could be that his injury -- if it does not prove chronic -- is the final piece in the jigsaw.

It is a bad thing that Messi is injured. All of those voices prove as much. Yet next summer, he may finally have silence.

International Friendly: Australia 1 Costa Rica 0

Substitute Tim Cahill´s trademark header earned Australia a 1-0 win over Costa Rica in Ange Postecoglou´s first game at the helm.

The veteran midfielder scored just 17 minutes after being introduced from the bench, heading home Tommy Oar´s 69th-minute corner with the help of a notable deflection at Sydney´s Allianz Stadium.

It allowed Postecoglou, who replaced Holger Osieck after a 6-0 loss to France, to mark the occasion of his first match in charge with a promising victory.

Mark Milligan and Robbie Kruse starred for the home side, while youngster Tom Rogic looked dangerous in a 25-minute second-half cameo.

Australia almost suffered a disastrous start when Jason Davidson prodded the ball past his own goalkeeper following a mix up, but Ivan Franjic stepped in to clear to safety.

The hosts settled in to the game after that, with Patrick Pemberton becoming increasingly occupied in the Costa Rica goal.

After Milligan had set up Mathew Leckie to shoot wide, Kruse´s heavy touch let him down after he had been sent clear by Rhys Williams´ excellent throughball.

Postecoglou´s men continued to probe, earning a corner from which Mile Jedinak fired a shot on goal from inside the six-yard box, but Pemberton made a comfortable save.

The first chance of the second half fell to Costa Rica but Wellington Phoenix striker Kenny Cunningham miscued with only goalkeeper Mat Ryan to beat.

Cahill was brought on in the 52nd minute, replacing Leckie, and he rose highest to nod in Oar´s excellent delivery, with the ball taking a wicked deflection off Junior Diaz on its way in.
