FIFA World Cup Play-Off: Uruguay 0 Jordan 0 (agg 5-0)

Uruguay have booked their tickets to Brazil after a 0-0 second-leg draw against Jordan in Montevideo sealed World Cup qualification.

A 5-0 first-leg win in Jordan last week all but guaranteed qualification but the Uruguayans still had to finish the job in front of their home fans on Wednesday.

Head coach Oscar Tabarez named an unchanged Uruguay starting line-up, with attacking weapons Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani occupying the two striking positions.

It was up to the Jordanians to make all the running, needing at least five goals to force the game into extra-time.

The away side started encouragingly, pushing numbers forward to trouble the South American´s defence but once Uruguay secured control of possession, the tie fizzled out with neither side creating many clear-cut chances.

Uruguay had two quality opportunities in the first-half with Cavani creating space for himself before blasting high and wide, while Diego Godin headed against the crossbar from close range from a corner.

Diego Lugano came closest for the home side in the second period with his free header drifting narrowly wide.

The Uruguayans, ranked sixth in the FIFA world rankings, will enter Pot One for the World Cup draw on December 6 and will avoid being drawn in a group with hosts Brazil, reigning champions Spain, Germany or Argentina.

Tabarez dismisses World Cup seeding advantage

Uruguay manager Oscar Tabarez claims there is no advantage to being a top seed for next year´s FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

The South American nation join Spain, Argentina, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium and Colombia as one of the seven top-ranked teams in the draw, while hosts Brazil will also be a top seed.

But when quizzed on whether it would give his side a favourable draw, Tabarez insisted it was irrelevant.

He said: "If we had not been seeded we could get good opponents too.

"The other top seeds, and all other teams, Holland, England, Italy, they are all great teams that can get anyone."

Uruguay booked their place at next year´s tournament with a 5-0 aggregate victory over Jordan, all five goals coming in the first leg, and Tabarez stressed his side did not set out to humiliate their opponents in the goalless second leg.

"No, we did not come to thrash the rival," he continued. "Those results are always circumstantial, and obviously that result helped our opponents to prepare differently for this game, putting a lot of emphasis on the defensive side, and well, they got their goal.

"Nobody can say that I underestimated them. It was said that I gave too much credit to an opponent that was lacking in quality and ability.

"People who have experienced the football we have know how these things are, so you should always proceed with great respect, and accept reality.

"The main reason we did not win was a good approach by Jordan."

The draw for the group stage of the 2014 FIFA World Cup is made on December 6.

Costa Rica Primera Division Wrap: Cartagines seal finals berth

Cartagines sealed their place in the Costa Rican Primera Division finals after a 2-1 home victory over Perez Zeledon.

Before the match, Cartagines were one point clear of fifth-placed UCR with two games to play and they got off to a perfect start after five minutes when Erick Scott found the back of the net.

But midway through the half, Zeledon fought their way back in to the match as Andres Castro equalised against the run of play.

Cartagines´ dominance paid off six minutes after half-time with Scott securing his brace and the match-winn.

UCR´s 2-0 loss to the already-finals-bound Alajuelense means Cartagines cannot be caught in fourth position and will feature in the final stages.

Herediano wrapped up top position with two victories in four days; a 4-1 thrashing of Limon and 3-2 victory on the road against Perez Zeledon.

Victor Nunez grabbed a double in both matches as Herediano, who took on Zeledon in a previously postponed encounter, firmed as favourites to retain their championship crown.

In other matches, Deportivo Saprissa suffered a hitch before the finals after a 1-1 draw against rock-bottom Belen Siglo XXI, Santos de Guapiles thumped Carmelita 4-0 and Uruguay came from behind to defeat Puntarenas 2-1.

Liga MX Preview: America start finals with Tigres clash

Reigning champions America will face Tigres UANL as the Liga MX first-leg quarter-finals get underway on Saturday.

Despite finishing top of the standings after the regular season, America lost both their matches to eighth-placed Tigres during the campaign and will be on the road for the first leg.

Tigres have not lost in any of their last five games, while America has only won one of their past six matches.

Also on Saturday, Morelia hosts Leon in a battle between sixth and third position respectively.

The last meeting between the two sides entered in a 2-0 home win for Morelia with the previous encounter in Leon ending goalless.

Leon enters the finals series buoyed by a 5-0 win over Tijuana, while Morelia has won three of their past five games.

On Sunday, regular season runners-up Santos Laguna travel to seventh-placed Queretaro.

Laguna recorded a draw and loss in their last two matches leading up for finals but has previously been on a six-game winning streak that propelled them up the standings.

Queretaro have only won two of their last 10 games and lost 2-0 and drew 1-1 in their two meeting with Laguna during the campaign.

Also on Sunday, fifth-placed Toluca will take on Cruz Azul in a battle of two sides with long unbeaten streaks.

Toluca has not been beaten for 10 matches, while fourth-placed Cruz Azul are on a nine-game streak without a loss.

Cruz Azul won both games in the regular season with 2-1 and 2-0 triumphs - both in Toluca.

Copa do Brasil: Atletico PR 1 Flamengo 1

Atletico PR and Flamengo have fought out a tight 1-1 draw in the first-leg of the Copa do Brasil final in Curitiba on Wednesday.

Striker Marcelo delighted the Atletico home fans in the 19th minute when he arrowed a shot into the top corner to open the scoring.

The lead lasted 12 minutes until Flamengo midfielder Amaral placed a shot in the bottom corner from outside the area.

Amaral´s strike could prove significant with Flamengo taking a crucial away goal to the Maracana Stadium for the second-leg on November 27.

A win or scoreless draw for Flamengo will see them lift the Copa do Brasil for the third time, while Atletico are yet to win the competition.

The winner of the tournament will qualify for South America´s premier club competition; the Copa Libetadores.

Copa Sudamericana: Sao Paulo 1 Ponte Preta 3

Ponte Preta is in pole position to progress to the Copa Sudamericana final after a 3-1 away first-leg win against Sao Paulo.

Winner of last year´s Copa Sudamericana, Sao Paulo got off to a fast start in front of a strong 50,000 home support with Paulo Ganso converting Aloisio´s assist after 21 minutes.

But it all went sour in the shadows of half-time when defender Antonio Carlos put the ball into his own net to make it 1-1 at the break.

Despite conceding the majority of possession, Ponte Preta struck again through Leonardo Goncalves Silva on 53 minutes before Uendel Pereira Goncalves scored the third away goal in the 71st minute.

The result spoiled the occasion of Sao Paulo goalkeeper Rogerio Ceni playing his 1,116th match for the club - equalling Pele´s total for Santos.

Ponte Preta will host the second-leg of the tie in Mogi Mirim on November 27.

En San Lorenzo, regresan los laterales

BUENOS AIRES -- De cara al partido que San Lorenzo, el único líder del campeonato, disputará frente a Atlético Rafaela, Juan Antonio Pizzi programó una práctica de fútbol e incluyó a Walter Kannemann y Julio Buffarini en los laterales, ausentes la fecha pasada por suspensión.

Sus reemplazantes, Mauro Cetto y Emmanuel Más, habían convertido en el triunfo ante Belgrano de Córdoba, pero igualmente Pizzi se inclinó por poner la defensa que habitualmente fue titular a lo largo del campeonato.

En definitiva, la alineación de San Lorenzo frente a Atlético Rafaela será: Sebastián Torrico, Julio Buffarini, Pablo Alvarado, Santiago Gentiletti, Walter Kannemann; Juan Mercier, Enzo Kalinski; Ángel Correa, Leandro Romagnoli, Ignacio Piatti; Héctor Villalba.

Un detalle a tener en cuenta es que durante el ensayo de fútbol formal desarrollado en la mañana del jueves, Pizzi redujo las dimensiones del campo de juego del Nuevo Gasómetro, para que el equipo ejercite jugar en un terreno similar al del estadio de Atlético Rafael.

San Lorenzo es el líder del Torneo Inicial con 30 puntos, producto de nueve triunfos, tres empates y cuatro derrotas. Cabe destacar que los rivales de San Lorenzo en las dos fechas finales serán Estudiantes, como local, y Vélez, en condición de visitante. Ante esto último, comenzó a circular la versión de que dicho partido podría jugarse a puertas cerradas.

Ramón Díaz ensayó con los mismos once

BUENOS AIRES -- En el entrenamiento matutino del día jueves y de cara al partido que River disputará el próximo domingo ante Racing, Ramón Díaz programó un ensayo de fútbol formal y puso la misma alineación inicial que en el entrenamiento del miércoles.

Mientras Teófilo Gutiérrez y Éder Álvarez Balanta trotaron alrededor del campo de juego, Ramiro Funes Mori y Giovanni Simeone ocuparon sus lugares. Es que los colombianos recién se reincorporaron a las prácticas en la jornada del jueves, luego de haber estado en Europa disputando partidos amistosos junto a su selección.

Los once que paró Ramón Díaz en la práctica de fútbol fueron: Marcelo Barovero; Gabriel Mercado, Gastón Pezzella, Ramiro Funes Mori (jugaría Balanta), Leonel Vangioni; Carlos Carbonero, Matías Kranevitter, Ariel Rojas; Manuel Lanzini; Federico Andrada, Giovanni Simeone (jugaría Teo).

En el ámito político, las cuatro agrupaciones que se presentarán en las elecciones del próximo 15 de diciembre presentaron sus respectivas listas. Las mismas que están encabezadas por Rodolfo D´Onofrio, Antonio Caselli, Carlos Ávila y Daniel Kiper se estarán verificando en los próximos cinco días, para llegar a la oficialización.

River tiene 17 puntos en el Torneo Inicial, producto de cuatro triunfos, cinco empates y siete derrotas. El conjunto de Ramón Díaz no suma de a tres desde hace siete fechas, desde aquel triunfo por 1 a 0 frente a Lanús, con gol de Gabriel Mercado, en los minutos finales del partido.

Merlo sorprendió con Cahais y Pelletieri

BUENOS AIRES -- En el primer ensayo de fútbol formal de la semana previa al clásico del domingo frente a River, Reinaldo Carlos Merlo sorprendió al alinear en la alineación titular a Matías Cahais y Agustín Pelletieri.

Ambos futbolistas habían perdidos su lugar desde el arribo del entrenador y se comenzaba a mencionar la posibilidad de que en diciembre iban a dejar la institución. Sin embargo, Cahais ingresó para ocupar el lugar de Claudio Corvalán y Pelletieri ingresó por Diego Villar.

Mientras tanto, Villar y Corvalán trabajaron de manera diferenciada, mientras que Luciano Vietto comenzó a hacer trabajos con pelota. No se descarta que el delantero pueda llegar al menos a ocupar el banco de suplentes frente a River.

En definitiva, el once que Merlo paró durante la práctica pero que todavía no es definitivo fue: Sebastián Saja; José Luis Gómez, Fernando Ortiz, Esteban Saveljich, Matías Cahais; Bruno Zuculini, Gastón Campi, Agustín Pelletieri, Rodrigo De Paul; Valetín Viola y Gabriel Hauche.

Los once mencionados enfrentaron a un combinado compuesto por jugadores suplentes. La formación titular tuvo, luego, los ingresos de Rodrigo Battaglia, Juan Ignacio Dineno y Ezequiel Melillo.

Racing, de apenas nueve puntos en el actual Torneo Inicial, enfrentará a River en el clásico que se disputará en la noche del domingo. El equipo de Avellaneda aún no pudo ganar jugando como local en el actual campeonato, ya que los dos partidos en los cuales sumó de a tres fueron en condición de visitante (Olimpo y Gimnasia).

Javier Cantero: "No existe una deuda importante con el plantel"

BUENOS AIRES -- El presidente de Independiente, Javier Cantero, negó la existencia de "una deuda importante" con el plantel profesional, después de reunirse con la mayoría de sus integrantes al término de la práctica del miércoles en Villa Domínico.

En una conferencia de prensa posterior al encuentro, el titular del club de Avellaneda explicó que la conversación giró en torno "al tema de la pretemporada y las vacaciones".

"Se termina el año, vienen las vacaciones y la pretemporada, por lo que charlamos sobre eso con los jugadores y el técnico. La reunión estaba pautada. El 7 y el 8 de diciembre empieza el receso y arreglamos para depositarle en sus cuentas el dinero correspondiente", contó el dirigente.

"No existe una deuda importante con el plantel", insistió frente cuando se le preguntaron por versiones con fuente en el plantel, que dan cuenta de un atraso de tres meses o más según casos particulares.

Si bien la deuda de haberes no sería mayor a los 60 días, otros items de las liquidaciones como "ayuda vivienda", "primas" y "trayectoria" sí tiene una postergación mayor, informaron los jugadores fuera de micrófono.

"Está todo normal, con el tema primas también", reafirmó Cantero, antes de referir a reclamos de jugadores como Leonel Núñez y Ernesto Farías, que ya abandonaron la institución.

"La AFA recibió una nota diciendo que se detenían las acciones contra Independiente desde Grecia porque llegó la apelación en tiempo y forma. Eso quiere decir que hicimos bien las cosas", explicó.

"Ahora tengo una reunión con un dirigente de Cruzeiro por la deuda por Farías. No nos van a quitar puntos. Vamos a cumplir como lo venimos haciendo. Tenemos muchas deudas e inconvenientes pero estamos pagándole a todos, tanto nuestras deudas como la de la gestión anterior", amplió.

Luego, Cantero comentó que el DT Omar De Felippe le pidió "unos días" antes de pedirle refuerzos para el semestre próximo y adelantó que en el actual plantel "no hay nadie intransferible".

"Si bien no queremos desarmar el plantel, la situación económica no nos permite rechazar una buena oferta", reconoció.

Además, reconoció "charlas" por las renovaciones de los contratos de Julián Velázquez y Marcelo Vidal y vinculó la continuidad del mediocampista Hernán Fredes a una negociación con su manager, que tiene "ofertas importantes de México" imposibles de equiparar en Avellaneda.

Con respecto al ofrecimiento de Sergio Agüero para acercar refuerzos, Cantero aclaró: "No hablé con su padre pero toda ayuda será bienvenida".

Sobre el balance de 2013, año del descenso, el dirigente se sinceró: "Independiente es un club de fútbol y el año no termina bien porque estamos en la B Nacional".

Finalmente, informó el alejamiento de Manuel Magán como coordinador de las divisiones inferiores del club: "No va a seguir en Independiente. Estamos agradecidos con él por el momento crítico en el que asumió pero se irá por razones personales
