Riaño seguiría como titular en Boca; Gago iría al banco

BUENOS AIRES -- El plantel de Boca Juniors realizó en la mañana del sábado la última práctica de cara al partido del domingo ante All Boys en la Bombonera a las 18.15, con la confirmación de la presencia de Claudio Riaño en la ofensiva del equipo que dirige Carlos Bianchi.

El equipo que el DT pondrá en cancha entonces formará con Agustín Orión; Matías Caruzzo, Ribair Rodríguez, Claudio Pérez y Nahuel Zarate; Cristian Erbes, Pablo Ledesma, Jesús Méndez y Juan Román Riquelme; Claudio Riaño y Emmanuel Gigliotti.

El Chiqui Pérez no estuvo en el entrenamiento, debido al fallecimiento de su abuela, pero será titular en el equipo xeneize.

En el predio de Casa Amarilla, el plantel boquense realizó un entrenamiento informal, con el clásico ´picado´ de los sábados en donde se mezclan titulares y suplentes.

Por la 17ma. fecha del torneo Inicial, Boca (que suma 27 puntos)recibirá el domingo a All Boys en la Bombonera a las 18.15, pendiente de los resultados de otros encuentros, en donde el puntero san Lorenzo, el escolta Newell´s y los terceros Lanús y Arsenal le llevan ventaja en la lucha por el campeonato.

Ricardo Gareca: "Queremos terminar de la mejor manera"

BUENOS AIRES -- El entrenador de Vélez, Ricardo Gareca, dijo tras la victoria sobre Godoy Cruz que "queremos terminar de la mejor manera" y declinó opinar sobre la posibilidad de ganar el torneo Inicial, ya que "hay muchos equipos adelante, nosotros somos los que menos posiblidades tenemos en cuanto a un título".

Vélez se ubica quinto, con 27 puntos, a tres de San Lorenzo pero con un partido más jugado. Y justamente se medirá con el equipo de Juan Antonio Pizzi en la última fecha, en Liniers.

"Vélez, para llegar con un mínimo de posibilidades, necesita ganar sus dos partidos, pero de San Lorenzo no voy a opinar, que opine Juan Antonio (por Pizzi). Ahora nos toca enfrentar a Colón y no hay que pensar más allá", dijo el DT.

De cualquier manera, Gareca comentó que "nunca hay que perder la fe. Mientras a un equipo los números no le digan lo contrario no hay que perder la fe".

Por último, se refirió a la victoria 2-1 sobre Godoy Cruz: "En el primer tiempo nos superaron y en el segundo hubo un cambio de actitud importante. En líneas generales terminamos justificando la levantada. Me quedo con que en el segundo tiempo fue más superior Vélez de lo que fue Godoy en el primero, porque ellos prácticamente no tuvieron situaciones en la segunda parte".

En tanto, el delantero Lucas Pratto afirmó que el objetivo "es pasar los treinta puntos" y estar en la pelea del Torneo Inicial 2013.

"El objetivo es pasar los treinta puntos y estar en la expectativa. Nos propusimos ganar los nueve puntos que quedaban y ahora nos restan seis", precisó el atacante luego del triunfo por 2-1 ante Godoy Cruz, en el Estadio José Amalfitani, por la antepenúltima fecha.

Pratto destacó la condición física que tuvo Vélez durante el encuentro frente a los mendocinos. "Venimos de un año en el que jugamos muchos torneos y así y todo aguantamos bien el partido. En los primeros treinta minutos Godoy Cruz tuvo varias chances claras, pero en el segundo no patearon al arco y nosotros llegamos y pudimos darlo vuelta", comentó el artillero.

Manchester City rival United for Benfica’s Garay

Argentine international, Ezequiel Garay has been on the radar of Manchester United for some time according to reports but it appears as though the blue side of Manchester maybe about to rival David Moyes’ side in an attempt to lure the player from the Estadio da Luz.

The 27-year old centre back has been a long-term target for Manchester United since Sir Alex Ferguson’s days in charge but Manchester City’s defensive problems have led to them looking for reinforcements.

With Captain, Vincent Kompany spending an increasing amount of time on the treatment table and question marks over City’s replacements a big money move has supposedly been sanctioned.

It is understood that it will take a figure in the region of £17 million to prize Garay away from Benfica and City are hoping that the defenders friendship with Sergio Aguero will help to convince him.

United value Garay at closer to £15 million so if it comes to a bidding war, it will be Manuel Pellegrini’s side that comes out on top.

Both sides will be looking to bolster their defences with United needing to look at replacing Rio Ferdinand and City needing to address their reliance on Vincent Kompany. If it is indeed true that both sides are after Garay, it could be a case of who wants him more.

Torneo Inicial: Argentinos held by Olimpo & Piatti drags San Lorenzo back from the dead

The seventeenth round of the Torneo Inicial is underway, as a ridiculously close title race hots up. On Friday night, Vélez Sarsfield came from behind to beat Godoy Cruz 2-1 at home, and on Saturday there were three more matches. Argentinos Juniors drew 1-1 after falling behind at home to Quilmes; the first time this season that Argentinos have conceded first and not lost. In Bahía Blanca, Olimpo claimed a 1-0 win over a Rosario Central side who performed dreadfully, and in the big title challengers’ clash of the day (there’s another tomorrow), Atlético de Rafaela took a 2-0 lead but were pegged back by two frankly ridiculous golazos from San Lorenzo’s Ignacio Piatti, to be held to a 2-2 draw. Vélez 2-1 Godoy Cruz

Mauro Óbolo scored against his old club for the visitors in the first half, but they came back in the second; Agustín Allione headed in the equaliser eleven minutes into the second half, and Lucas Pratto – who’d been trying long shots all game, and had to get one in sooner or later – got the winner with six minutes left.

Argentinos Juniors 1-1 Quilmes

Pablo Garnier opened the scoring for Quilmes in La Paternal, thanks in no small part to Argentinos’ defence falling to pieces (that, at least, was how it seemed from my position in the stands). After being second best for most of the first half, though, the hosts equalised shortly before half time thanks to a long range strike from Rodrigo Gómez, and that was how the game remained, largely thanks to Argentinos’ total failure to make their second half superiority tell.

Olimpo 1-0 Rosario Central

I missed almost all of this match – I was travelling home from Argentinos v Quilmes when it kicked off. By all accounts, it was dreadful, and Olimpo won it with a lateish goal (14 minutes left on the clock) from Dylan Gissi, who becomes the first Swiss citizen to score in the history of the Argentine league – his dad was a professional footballer and he was born and raised in Geneva.

Atlético de Rafaela 2-2 San Lorenzo

The day’s big clash of title hopefuls saw Rafaela host league leaders San Lorenzo, and they flew into a 2-0 lead with goals from Lucas Albertengo 10 minutes in and Diego Vera in the 50th minute. San Lorenzo hit back with two beauties, though; an indirect free kick scored by Ignacio Piatti, which was quite frankly hit far harder than any human being reasonably needs to kick a football, and a second with five minutes left in which Piatti flicked the ball over his marker’s head, and then back, before stabbing it beyond the goalkeeper from the edge of the box.

Seriously, you’ve got to watch this video for Piatti’s second goal alone. It was scored seven hours ago as I type this, and I’m still trying to get over it.

Caruso Lombardi: "Quilmes vino a hacer su negocio"

BUENOS AIRES -- El DT de Argentinos Juniors, Ricardo Caruso Lombardi reconoció que Quilmes "vino a hacer su negocio", además de considerar que su equipo tendría que haber "ganado".

Argentinos Juniors empató como local 1-1 con el `Cervecero` por 17ta. fecha del Torneo Inicial, con goles convertidos por Pablo Garnier para la visita, mientras que el empate lo marcó Rodrigo Gómez.
"Hoy tendríamos que haber ganado. Es una lástima por estar de local. Quilmes vino a hacer su negocio. Menos mal que empató Gómez,

sino se hubiera complicado más", expresó Caruso Lombardi.

"Es muy difícil cuando un equipo no te ataca nunca. Buscamos con nuestras armas. Con lo justo, pero deberíamos haber ganado", enfatizó el DT.
"Fue un partido muy dificil. Se cerraron mucho. No crearon jugadas de ataque. Nosotros dentro de lo que tuvimos hubo tres situaciones claras. Es tremendo el cabezazo que sacó (Sebastián) Peratta: no sé como hizo", se preguntó el extrovertido técnico de Argentinos.

Con relación a una jugada dudosa dentro del area local, el entrenador opinó: "No veo que nuestro jugador arrastre la pierna de (Miguel) Caneo. Igual yo estaba en diagonal y con jugadores delante. Es difícil apreciarla. La televisión dirá más claro si fue penal", sostuvo.

En tanto, el DT de Quilmes, Blas Giunta reconoció: "Vinimos a hacer nuestro negocio. La intención es sumar la mayor cantidad de puntos posibles. Con 24 puntos (hasta el momento reúne 20) al final del campeonato me conformo".

Sobre el partido y la actualidad de su equipo, el entrenador `Cervecero` opinó: "Fue un partido tranquilo para los dos conjuntos, pero no estamos ganando y tenemos que hacerlo", se preocupó Giunta.

Juan Pizzi: "Tuvimos fortaleza para sobreponernos a la adversidad"

BUENOS AIRES -- El entrenador de San Lorenzo, Juan Antonio Pizzi, destacó en el empate de su equipo, de visitante, ante Atlético de Rafaela 2-2 "la fortaleza para sobreponerse a la adversidad", ya que remontó un 0-2, en un partido por la 17ª fecha del torneo Inicial de fútbol.

"Tuvimos fortaleza para sobreponernos a la adversidad. No es nada fácil remontar un 0-2 ante este equipo (Rafaela) y en esta cancha", destacó Pizzi.

"Hoy conseguimos un empate importante por cómo se dio el partido y ahora nuestros rivales en la lucha por el título tienen que ganar mañana para quitarnos la punta", agregó.

San Lorenzo, con esta igualdad (la segunda en los últimos cuatro encuentros de visitante), se mantiene en la cima con 31 unidades, dos más que Newell´s Old Boys de Rosario (29), tres por encima de Lanús y Arsenal de Sarandí (28).

Por su parte, Atlético de Rafaela, que ganó 6 de los 9 partidos que jugó de local en el torneo, llegó a 25 puntos, dos menos que Boca Juniors y Vélez Sarsfield (27).

Cabe destacar que Newell´s recibirá mañana a Arsenal a las 19; Lanús a Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata desde las 17; y Boca a All Boys a partir de las 18.15.

Pizzi, por último, dijo: "Faltan seis puntos, todavía estamos muy bien y vamos a seguir", puntualizó.

Y cerró: "Campeón es el que llega primero tras jugarse la última fecha", sentenció.

Burruchaga: "Quizá el rival esté más contento que nosotros"

RAFAELA -- Jorge Burruchaga, técnico de Atlético de Rafaela, describió las sensaciones que dejó el empate 2-2 entre su equipo y San Lorenzo, por la 17ma. fecha del Inicial, al argumentar que "quizás el rival esté más contento que nosotros" por el resultado final.

"Quizás el rival esté más contento que nosotros", graficó el entrenador de la Crema, por la manera en la que el puntero del torneo llegó a la igualdad, tras ir en desventaja por dos goles.

"Atlético hizo un partido perfecto. Es un dolor muy grande, era una oportunidad única", analizó el entrenador, cuyo contrato tiene vigencia hasta fin de año.

"Felicito a los muchachos por el nivel desplegado. Lo digo con todo respeto, fuimos más que el líder del campeonato", expresó Burruchaga, que todavía no se baja de la lucha por el título, a pesar de que el conjunto santafesino sigue a seis puntos (con un partido pendiente ante Colón de Santa Fe, aunque podrían dárselo por ganado sin disputarlo) de la vanguardia.

"Hasta que los números nos den, saldremos a jugarnos nuestras chances", dijo Burruchaga, quien sería pretendido por Liga Deportiva Universitaria de Quito, que busca sus servicios desde enero venidero.

Piatti: "Creo que el punto sirve"

RAFAELA -- El talentoso Ignacio Piatti sostuvo esta noche que San Lorenzo de Almagro debe ocuparse de "vencer a Estudiantes" en el Nuevo Gasómetro y "después ir a Vélez a tratar de ganar el Torneo" Inicial. "Tenemos que vencer a Estudiantes de local y después ir a Vélez y tratar de ganar el Torneo", sintetizó Piatti acerca de la misión que debe asumir San Lorenzo para procurar conquistar el título en la competencia doméstica, a tan sólo dos fechas del desenlace.

Piatti habló así con los periodistas tras desempeñar un papel estelar en el partido ante Atlético de Rafaela en el siempre difícil escenario de los santafesinos, dado que la Crema se imponía 2-0 y sobre el epílogo con dos goles suyos el Ciclón rescató el 2-2 aliviador.

Es más, San Lorenzo terminó la jornada del sábado como único líder, pero el domingo corre el riesgo de ceder la cima o de pasar a compartirla, dado que Newell´s Old Boys lo escolta a dos puntos, pero son varios lo que se mantienen como aspirantes a la corona.

"Obtuvimnos el primer gol, fuimos a buscar el segundo y lo conseguimos, pero así como pudimos haberlo ganado, también pudimos haberlo perdido, porque nos jugamos todo y en el segundo tiempo pusimos un equipo muy ofensivo", comentó Piatti, quien entre otros méritos es uno de los tres futbolistas que encabeza la tabla de goleadores. "Sacamos un punto que creo que nos sirve, pero mañana (domingo) vamos a ver cómo les va a los otros equipos", admitió el ex Chacarita Juniors, Saint Etienne, Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata, Independiente y Lecce.

"Nosotros en el primer tiempo jugamos mal, jugó mejor Rafaela, pero en el segundo jugamos mucho mejor nosotros", redondeó Nacho, quien le restó importancia al leve esguince de tobillo que lo afectó en la jugada que le abrió el camino al gol del empate definitivo, por lo que estará sin inconvenientes en el encuentro ante los Pincharratas.

Alfredo Berti: The Tito to Tata’s Pep

“We will continue the project.” The newcomer thanked his former boss. He remarked on the sizeable shoes he had been tasked with filling, on how the club had changed since the old boss’s appointment. He spoke about how much he had learned by sitting next to his mentor in the dugout during a jaw-dropping period of success and underlined that the while the club must now look forward. And that little would change on the pitch.

New Barcelona coach Tito Vilanva was speaking about Pep Guardiola; New Newell’s coach Alfredo Berti about Tata Matino, who had left to take Tito’s place on the bench in Catalonia.

Continuity has been key to Newell’s Old Boys, who currently sit two points clear at the summit of Argentina’s Toreno Inicial with just five games remaining. La Lepra (a nicknamed earned after the club played a charity match for a nearby leper clinic – an invitation declined by fierce local rivals Rosario Central) host second-placed San Lorenzo tonight. And with three eminently winnable games to follow, victory will leave them a very good chance of wrapping up the league title before a final-day clash with Lanus.

It’s been quite an 18 months for a club whose recent form had it flirting with relegation prior to Martino’s appointment in December 2011. They avoided the drop by going from 18th to 6th in Martino’s first season and finished runners-up to Velez in his second. They then claimed last season’s Torneo Final league title and made it all the way to Copa Libertadores semi-finals – a penalty shootout defeat to Ronaldinho’s Atletico Mineiro preventing them from claiming the first league-and-Libertadores double since the advent of Argentina’s short-season format in 1990. A month later, Tata was packing his bags for Barca.

Berti, a former player at the club and Tata’s no.2, was instantly charged with continuing the tradition. A fine midfielder in playing days -- which took him from Newell’s to Mexico and Colombia before he returned home to join Boca -- a knee injury would eventually see him spend more time in the operating theatre than on the pitch, finally forcing him to call time on his career at just 29.

A former assistant to Marcelo Bielsa with the Chilean national team, Berti, like Tata, graduated from the school of Bielsismo.

“[Martino and Berti] have a lot of similarities and they both like to play good football,” said top-scorer Maxi Rodriguez last month. The 4-3-3 implemented by Martino has remained, with full-backs Milton Casco and Marcos Caceres pushing high up the field to stretch the opposition. The team hasn´t missed a beat. Their first ten games brought 23 points – a club record.

“The system is one that has been used for the last year and a half,” said Berti upon his appointment in July. “I like the tactics I like and the players, we are convinced we mustn´t change.”

Some changes were unavoidable: Ignacio Scocco, who had been the league’s stand-out performer since re-joining the club from Al Ain shortly after Martino’s appointment, made a big-money move to Internacional in Brazil; Central defender Santiago Vergini, a Martino favourite, tasked with playing the first ball out from the back, joined Estudiantes; Maximiliano Urruti left for MLS.

Replacing a player of Scoco’s talent is an impossibility for modern Argentine clubs, and so Newell’s has done the next best thing: eleven different players have chipped in with goals so far this season – a tally bettered only by the league’s leading scorers, Lanus. David Trezeguet is now on four, while Rodriguez has hit six. Newell’s have averaged 1.5 goals per game this campaign, a rise of 0.4 on last season.

Berti holds the collective above all else, as illustrated following last week’s 2-2 draw with Colon when Trezeguet came off the bench to replace Fabian Munoz and strike twice in the final 17 minutes to rescue a point.

Munoz – who’s asked to drop deep from no.9 position to vacate space for an onrushing midfield – is yet to break his duck after eleven appearances this season, but still has his coach’s support. Individual statistics hold little importance for Berti: “Whether Fabian scores or not, the truth is that I do not care, I´d worry more if he were not creating opportunities.”

Former World Cup winner Trezeguet, who hit his 300th and 301st career goal in that cameo, joined Newell’s in pursuit of more game time after it became clear that he was no longer in River Plate coach Ramon Diaz’s plans, though he has started only twice during his 10 appearances this season.

But Berti has assured the veteran still feels an important part of his title-chasing side. “The coach has always been very clear with me and he thinks that this is a time better suited to using other players,” says Trezeguet. “The important thing for me is to contribute from outside [the starting eleven].”

With just two points from their last three games, Newell’s have suffered an untimely blip, but Berti´s troops are ready to rally. “We have five finals,” says goalkeeper Nahuel Guzman. “We will not roll over.”

Martino’s final game in charge of Newell’s saw it lose Argentina’s convoluted and wholly unnecessary SuperFinal to Velez. That defeat has proved a blessing for Berti, who has been without the distractions of the Copa Sudamericana in a debut season that he now hopes will prove as fruitful Tito’s in Barcelona.
