Sick of underperforming foreign strikers, UNAM Pumas sign two foreign strikers

In addition to a couple of foreign strikers, Pumas have also signed a couple of other players on the wrong side of 30. It´s a set of moves indicative of a need to win now at the expense of the future.

UNAM Pumas have failed to succeed in impressive fashion over the last four seasons, failing to make Liguilla in three of them and exiting the playoffs unceremoniously in the other. A large chunk of the core from the 2011 Clausura champions remains intact, but they´ve been unable to duplicate that success.

That´s mostly because of their struggles up top since the departures of ´Paco´ Francisco Palencia and Juan Carlos Cacho. Pumas have brought in a number of foreign strikers with great pedigrees, but their production has never been replaced. Pumas have listed three foreign strikers as transferable after an atrocious season, opting to start over again.

They´ve already announced four new signings, with more likely to come. Former Pumas striker Dante Lopez is returning to the club after a spell in his native Paraguay. He´s owed late wages from his current club, Olimpia, and will come back to a league where the checks generally arrive on time and clear. Also rejoining Pumas is 36-year-old midfielder Leandro Augusto, who played for the club for 10 years. He probably doesn´t have much left in the tank, but any reasonable depth and experience in midfield will help.

Daniel Ludueña will join from Pachuca, with Ariel Nahuelpán heading the other way. He hasn´t been nearly as successful at Pachuca as he was at Santos, though he did score a goal from inside his own half while playing for the Tucos.

The biggest signing of the four is striker Ismael Sosa of Universidad Catolica, mainly because his signing is reminiscent of others that didn´t work out. He´s a foreign striker in his mid-20s who had a rocky start to his career, but has recently started scoring at an impressive clip in a second-tier South American league. Pumas supporters will be hoping that he turns out much better than Nahuelpán and Robin Ramirez.

Toluca vs. Cruz Azul: Final score 3-0, Red Devils very much in control

It looks like Cruz Azul will be virtually bowing out of the Liguilla before they have a chance to set foot on their home turf. Toluca were brilliant in the first leg, recording a very comfortable 3-0 win. After Saturday night´s result, it´s tough to see them pulling off a comeback and firing their way into the semifinals.

Toluca turned a positive start into an opening goal in the 31st minute, with Oscar Rojas finishing off a nice move with an impressive turn and shot. Isaac Brizuela played him a pass at the top of the box, but he still had plenty of work to do. The Toluca wingback turned his defender to get himself free on goal, then placed a low shot to the back post, between the legs of another member of the Cruz Azul back line.

Six minutes later, Cruz Azul defender doubled Toluca´s lead with an embarrassing own goal. He put up his leg to try to block a cross by Carlos Esquivel, which might have made its way to Pablo Velázquez had Pereira not intervened, but simply popped the ball up in the air, over the head of Jesus Corona and into the back of the net. When Cruz Azul made a tactical switch at halftime, he was the defender taken off for a midfielder.

Cruz Azul´s best chance of the game came in the 61st minute, off a cross into substitute Mauro Formica. He directed a header on goal, but Alfredo Talavera was perfectly positioned to make a save. La Maquina never made Talavera do anything particularly difficult, while Toluca went on to add a third goal, scored by Francisco Gamboa with a header off a corner kick.

While there are still 90 minutes of soccer left to be played at Estadio Azul, it´s tough to see Cruz Azul overturning this result. Their 21 goals on the season is second worst among teams that made Liguilla, so they´re not exactly equipped to make a dramatic comeback.

Toluca: Talavera, Gamboa, Pinto, Da Silva, Rojas, Mathias, Rios, Velasco (Sinha 57´), Velazquez (Nava 82´), Esquivel (Benitez 75´), Brizuela

Goals: Rojas (31´), Pereira (OG 37´), Gamboa (79´)

Cruz Azul: Corona, Dominguez, Perea, Pereira (Formica 45´), I.Castro, A. Castro, Torrado, Rojas, Gimenez, Emana (Napoles 45´), Pavone

Toluca thump Cruz Azul and Morelia and Leon draw in thrilling Liguilla first legs

Toluca have taken a huge step towards the Semi Finals with a 3-0 victory over Cruz Azul. After last season’s heart break for La Maquina it would appear that their hopes of redemption are all but over. Oscar Rojas fired Toluca into the lead on the half hour mark and 5 minutes later Jair Pereira managed to balloon the ball into his own net. With 10 minutes remaining, Francisco Gamboa headed a third which leaves Cruz Azul with a mountain to climb.

Later, Morelia fought back to draw 3-3 with Leon in an enthralling game of football. A fine long range strike from Luis Montes gave Leon the lead and when Mauro Boselli exquisitely lobbed goalkeeper, Federico Vilar 5 minutes later it appeared to be Leon’s day. A superb solo effort from highly sought after, Ecuadorian winger, Jefferson Montero reduced the deficit but before the break the two-goal lead was reestablished by Elias Hernandez. However, substitute, Ever Guzman ensured that the tie will go back to Leon with it all to play for with a late brace. WATCH ALL THE GOALS HERE….

Venezuela Primera Division Wrap: Caracas, Mineros de Guayana continue winning ways

Caracas stayed top of the Venezuela Primera Division table with a 1-0 win over Deportivo Tachira, while Mineros de Guayana also won.

The league leaders held on to first place with a narrow win at home, as Roberto Tucker´s 71st-minute penalty earned them all three points - with Tachira missing the chance to climb to fifth after Carabobo´s slip-up.

Mineros, meanwhile, cantered to a 3-0 win at home to Atletico Venezuela.

Rafael Acosta scored the opener on 40 minutes, before Zamir Valoyes struck a late brace to earn them their ninth victory of the season as they continued to match Caracas - with the sides level on 32 points through 15 games.

Zamora and Deportivo Anzoategui are the closest chasers in third and fourth - both on 30 points - with the former accounting for Carabobo 1-0 away.

Juan Falcon struck four minutes prior to half-time to give Zamora a valuable road victory and send them third, while Carabobo dropped to fifth (27 points).

Anzoategui also had a narrow win away from home, as they edged Llaneros de Guanare 1-0 courtesy of Edwin Aguilar´s ninth goal of the campaign.

Trujillanos are eighth on 19 points, five behind seventh side Atletico Venezuela, after a resounding 4-0 win at home to Atletico El Vigia.

Estudiantes de Merida also have 19 points to their name following a 3-1 success over Tucanes - with Luciano Ursino netting a brace.

Aragua are a point behind in 10th spot after ending a six-match winless run with a 2-1 triumph over 10-man Deportivo Petare.

Zulia are unbeaten in four, most recently dismissing bottom club Yaracuyanos 1-0, while Deportivo La Guaira were kept to a scoreless draw at home to Deportivo Lara.

Uruguay Primera Division Wrap: Nacional miss out, River Plate down leaders Danubio

Nacional wasted a chance to go top of the Primera Division on Sunday as they were beaten 3-2 by Penarol at home.

After River Plate had moved level at the top with a victory over leaders Danubio on Saturday, a win for Nacional over reigning champions Penarol would have moved them a point clear at the summit.

However, the hosts were behind after 15 minutes when Jonathan Rodriguez opened the scoring and although Ivan Alonso equalised 12 minutes later, Penarol led at the break courtesy of Luis Aguiar.

Rodriguez completed his brace a minute after the interval and even though Diego Arismendi pulled one back six minutes from time, it was not enough for Nacional.

That meant Danubio remained top of the standings, despite being edged out 2-1 by River Plate at the Estadio Jardines del Hipodromo on Saturday.

The sides are now separated only by goal difference after River made a superb start, blowing away Danubio with two goals in the opening 11 minutes from Hamilton Pereira and Lucas Olaza.

Cristian Gonzalez´s own goal three minutes after the hour made life uncomfortable for the visitors, but they held on to inflict a second league defeat in four matches on Danubio.

Meanwhile, Rentistas and Defensor Sporting played out an amazing 11-goal encounter at the Complejo Deportivo Rentistas, with the hosts running out 6-5 winners after Felipe Conceicao and Gonzalo Bazallo had opened the scoring with a goal for each side.

Adrian Luna and Anibal Hernandez then put the visitors 3-1 up within half an hour, before Gabriel Costa pulled a goal back for Rentistas.

The goals kept on coming as Luna completed his brace on the stroke of half-time, only for Marcelo Fernandez to reply, with Mario Risso restoring the two-goal lead for Defensor soon afterwards.

However, David Terans scored twice in four minutes before Fernandez grabbed a dramatic second in injury time to settle a pulsating contest, which also saw Facundo Moreira dismissed a minute from time.

Elsewhere, Wanderers´ surge up the table continued, as they won their fourth league game in a row thanks to a Sergio Blanco penalty against Sud America.

Fenix´s miserable form showed no signs of abating as they slipped to the bottom of the table thanks to a Jonathan Barboza effort after 39 minutes for Liverpool, while Juventud de Las Piedras´ 2-2 draw against Cerro sees them in 15th.

El Tanque Sisley and Racing shared the points in a four-goal thriller, with Juan Pablo Fagundez atoning for his earlier own goal by registering an 84th-minute equaliser for El Tanque.

Federico Ramos picked the ideal time to score his first league goal of the season, striking in the 90th minute for Miramar Misiones to secure a 2-1 win over Cerro Largo
