First round yields goals galore in Liga MX playoffs
In a way, Mexico´s domestic league got an early start to the playoffs by providing all the personnel for El Tri´s play-in qualification games versus New Zealand. The goal-fest that ensued versus the Kiwis resulted in a 9-2 aggregate that earned Mexico a spot in the World Cup. The trend of scoring goals has continued, however, into the Liga MX playoffs, where a record number of goals were scored in the opening round. Over the four matches played, 18 goals were scored.
Sadly for Cemeteros fans, Cruz Azul was the only team not to get in on the scoring action, falling to Toluca, 3-0. Finalists last season, Cruz Azul failed to overcome the demons that invariably seem to strike the squad whenever a chance at trophy glory strikes. Last year, though they won the Copa MX, they were undone by a miraculous goalkeeper goal and eventually fell to Club America, losing the Liga MX final.
This time, though, it was the Red Devils who tormented Cruz Azul early on in the playoffs. By letting in three goals, Jesus Corona is doing no favors to his cause of becoming El Tri´s goalkeeper again. Toluca players were merciless in exploiting their scoring chances. Perhaps Mexico interim coach Miguel Herrera knew what was what when he picked Antonio "Zinha" Naelson for the El Tri squad, rather than Cruz Azul´s beloved midfield veteran, Christian "Chaco" Gimenez. While Gimenez struggled to match the intensity of the Toluca opposition, Naelson paced Toluca, the scoring leaders of the regular season, to the victory. He helped seal the win late in the match with a sublime free kick assist to Francisco Gamboa for the final goal.
Barring a comeback almost as big as the one required by New Zealand after their game in Azteca, Cruz Azul is out of the playoffs. Still, there is honor for them to earn in the final match, while Toluca will look to play it safe and move on.
Leon only needed the first half to hang three goals on Morelia, but the Monarchs didn´t let that stop them from scoring in return. Jefferson Montero struck once for Morelia in the first half as well, keeping the scoring gap reasonable. Morelia also managed to stop the bleeding by keeping Leon scoreless in the second half. That paved the way for Ever Guzman to relive the glory days of the U17 2005 World Cup as he scored two late goals for Morelia. The 3-3 result leaves the teams with all to play for in the second leg, but Leon will hold the advantage of playing in front of their home fans.
Club America versus Tigres yielded another draw that should not have been shocking, but somehow, still was. This was actually the expected final from last season, when the two clubs were clearly the dominant squads during the regular season. Yet Tigres bowed out early in the playoffs and never challenged for the title. This Apertura, Las Aguilas have been dominant all season long, while Tigres struggled to make the final playoff spot. Still, the quality of the squad has shone through when most needed, making them a dangerous playoff team.
Club America actually scored first in the 13th minute on a strike by Juan Carlos Valenzuela. Led by wily midfielder Lucas Lobos, Tigres then took the game to Club America, scoring twice in a five-minute period in the first half. Las Aguilas pulled even in the final minute of regulation, when a pass by Rubens Sambueza found Aquivaldo Mosquera.
Though the away goals and the home field advantage favors Club America to break the 2-2 deadlock, the defending champions did suffer a loss that could prove fatal. Miguel Layun, hero of the incisive crossing skills, left the match injured. The extent of his damage is not yet known, but if he is unable to play for the next leg or for the rest of the playoffs, Club America will be down a key player.
Meanwhile, the key player for Santos Laguna, Oribe Peralta, couldn´t get on the 2-3 final scoresheet versus Queretaro. Perhaps because of his scoring exploits for El Tri, Peralta was the focus of much defensive attention by the Gallos Blancos. Somewhat surprisingly, that didn´t faze the Laguneros much. They managed to score three goals anyway, even with Peralta contributing nothing more than a single assist. Carlos Darwin Quintero scored two out of the three. Finally, Queretaro seemed to wake up to the fact that they needed to score goals, not just stop Peralta from scoring. Isaac Romo found the net twice in the second half to give Queretaro a fighting chance in the return leg of the opening playoff series.
While it definitely looks like Toluca is moving on to the semifinals, the picture is otherwise murkier. Morelia vs Leon will be a slugfest to the end, but I pick the Monarchs to advance. If Layun returns, Club America should also advance, as should Santos Laguna. Yet the goals and surprises may continue, which adds to the excitement off the Liga MX playoffs.
