Copa do Brasil: Flamengo 2 Atletico PR 0 (3-1 agg)

Flamengo clinched their third Copa do Brasil title after a 2-0 win over Atletico Paranaense in the second leg of their final on Wednesday.

Jayme de Almeida Filho´s side secured the cup for the first time since 2006, completing a 3-1 aggregate win in Rio de Janeiro.

Elias and Hernane scored dramatic late goalsm while both sides had a man sent off as Flamengo left-back Andre Santos and Atletico PR substitute Ciro saw red.

Flamengo´s third win puts them equal second alongside Corinthians for most Copa do Brasil crowns, one behind Gremio and Cruzeiro.

It also secures their place in the 2014 Copa Libertadores.

They needed until the 88th minute to go ahead in the tie for the first time thanks to Elias.

Paulinho turned his marker on the side of the area to get to the by-line before cutting back for the former Atletico Madrid attacker to place into the bottom corner.

Santos and Cirio, who was introduced in the 73rd minute, both saw red soon after before Flamengo sealed victory.

Ponte Preta are through to the Copa Sudamericana final after playing out a 1-1 draw at home to Sao Paulo on Wednesday.

While their relegation from the Brazil Serie A is all but confirmed, Ponte Preta´s fine cup run continued thanks to the 4-2 aggregate win.

Leonardo put them further ahead in the tie with a 43rd-minute opener at the Estadio Romildo Vitor Gomes Ferreira.

Luis Fabiano levelled the second leg with six minutes remaining but Sao Paulo, mid-table in the Serie A, were never going to overhaul the deficit.

Ponte Preta, who have never won the Copa Sudamericana, will face either Paraguayan outfit Libertad or Argentina´s Lanus in the final.

Leonardo pounced on a poor clearance to open the scoring two minutes before the break, putting away his chance on the second effort after his initial strike was blocked.

Ortiz: "Los números hablan por sí sólos"

BUENOS AIRES -- Tras el triunfo conseguido el pasado domingo frente a River, el defensor Fernando Ortiz habló en ESPN Radio en Rivadavia y dejó en claro que, a pesar del gran triunfo que consiguió Racing, el plantel "no olvida la mala campaña".

"Estamos contentos por lo que conseguimos el domingo con River pero los números hablan por sí solos. Hay más cosas por revisar que las que hicimos bien", manifestó Ortiz quien se transformó en un pilar fundamental de la defensa del equipo desde la llegada de Reinaldo Merlo.

Justamente, con respecto a la llegada del nuevo entrenador, Ortiz rescata "lo bueno que ha sido el último mes". "Merlo dio un orden al equipo e hizo hincapié en no perder la atención y en aprovechar las oportunidades", agregó.

Por otro lado, destacó "la humanidad del grupo" porque siempre "se mantuvo unido con todos tirando para el mismo lado". "Un ejemplo es Agustín Pelletieri. El técnico fue claro con él y siempre se mantuvo a la orden del grupo", confesó.

Rubén Ramírez: "Lerche nos dijo mentiras"

BUENOS AIRES -- Mientras continúa sin definición la resolución por el partido suspendido entre Colón y Atlético Rafaela, el delantero Rubén Ramírez, ya exjugador del conjunto santafesino, habló en ESPN Radio en Rivadavia y dejó en claro que "la dirigencia se comportó muy mal con el plantel".

"Quien era el presidente nos dijo mentiras, mentiras y más mentiras. Tengo una bronca bárbara. Nos miró a la cara y nos juró por sus hijos que nos iba a pagar", señaló Ramírez quien, por apoyo de Futbolistas Argentinos Argremiados, dejó de ser jugador de Colón.

El delantero dejó el club en las últimas semanas porque le debían nueve meses de sueldo. "No daba para más", reconoció Ramírez. "Una vez, Lerche me ofreció un adelanto. Una vergüenza. Me ofreció un adelanto de una deuda", agregó.

"Yo quiero al club, pero éste es mi trabajo y dependo de esto", expresó Ramírez que a su vez confesó que "Algunos chicos de la pensión del club contaban que si no pagaban, no les daban de comer".

Por otro lado, en relación al partido suspendido entre Colón y Atlético Rafaela manifestó que, a pesar de que ya no formaba parte del plantel, sabe que sus excompañeros "la pasaron muy mal" y afirmó que "según Agremiados se iba a reprogramar". "Conozco muy bien a mis compañeros y sé que no se presentaron porque Marchi dijo que se iba a reprogramar", reconoció.

Ruben Ramírez participó en once de los dieciséis partidos de Colón en el actual Torneo Inicial, convirtiendo cuatro goles (dos a Rosario Central, uno a River y uno a Quilmes). Fue el segundo ciclo del delantero en el conjunto santafecino porque antes estuvo entre 2005 y 2008. También, Ramírez pasó por Tiro Federal, Racing, Banfield y Godoy Cruz.

Farewell to Nilton Santos, the archetypal full-back

Six decades ago, the distance between Rio de Janeiro and Stockholm looked much wider. As such, tales of Brazil´s exploits at the 1958 World Cup were inevitably embedded with a combination of enthusiasm and poetic license from journalists following the Selecao around Sweden. It is nonetheless tempting to believe the story in which team manager Vicente Feola despairs on the sidelines and begs for his full-back to drop back, only to end up muttering "Well done" when he scores the second goal of a 3-0 first-round win against Austria.

I want to believe it not just because it´s an amazing example of the cheekiness that made Brazilian football famous worldwide, but also because the player in question was Nilton Santos. Even if the specific episode might have been given some serious spin in match reports, the Brazilian left-back indeed broke the rules on the pitch. During a time in which players in these defensive positions were supposed to limit their actions to offering form at the back, "Master Nilton" started a tradition of attacking prowess that still is one of the trademarks of Brazilian football -- and modern football at large -- in 2013.

Santos, who died this Wednesday at the age of 88 due to complications caused by pneumonia, was also one of the most revered players in his native country. With a wondrous résumé boasting two World Cup titles (he also took part in 1954 and was an unused player in the ill-fated 1950 campaign) and 84 caps for the Selecao, his career is made even more impressive by the fact he represented just one club: Botafogo, where he made 723 appearances and won 26 trophies.

Nicknamed "The Encyclopedia" given his vast technical repertoire, Nilton Santos was also worshipped by the simplicity with which he handled fans and media. The son of a Rio fisherman, he was spotted playing in a kick-about while doing military duty with the Air Force. Taken to Botafogo in 1948, the hopeful striker was quickly moved to the defence when manager Zeze Moreira found out he could do a good job tracking back as well.

But the forward´s instinct never left him, which helps to explain why Santos did not get a game in Flavio Costas´ 1950 team for a home World Cup that Brazil was highly touted to win. The man who kept him out of the team was Bigode, the chosen one at a time when substitutions were not allowed. Ironically, he ended up singled out as one of the villains of Brazil´s notorious defeat to Uruguay in the final.

Four years later, however, Nilton owned the left-back spot and with him, Brazil would at last dazzle the world. Alongside Mario Zagallo, Didi, Garrincha and Pele, he helped Brazil lift their maiden World Cup in 1958. It was 1962 in Chile, though, that made Santos even more legendary.

During a tricky match against a Spain side boasting Alfredo Di Stefano and Ferenc Puskas that was leading 1-0 in the second half, Santos (defying the sport´s limitations at the ripe age of 37) fouled striker Enrique Collar inside the Brazil box only to walk two steps forward and con referee Sergio Bustamante into awarding a free kick. Nothing came of the set piece and Brazil went on to win 2-1.

In the 21st century, this would qualify Santos as a cheater. Not in Brazil, though, where such cheekiness is still accepted as a valuable resource. Master Nilton, however, more than made up for such tricks over the course of his career. He endorsed Botafogo´s signing of a weird winger with bowed legs in 1953, even after being skinned by the then-unknown Garrincha at a training session. "It´s better to have him on our side so I don´t have to mark him too often," he reportedly said.

Nilton was elected by FIFA the best left-back of all time but never really occupied a place in the limelight. His retirement days were pretty much spent talking about the past, especially when it involved tales of Garrincha. He did publish an autobiography in 1998, but 10 years later, after being diagnosed with Alzheimer´s disease, Santos was in financial difficulties -- until Botafogo´s directors and fans chipped in to fund his safe passage to a Rio nursing home.

Yet he never complained about the lack of money. "I have never envied the fact that players today are rich. I just resent how much freedom they have to go forward," he quipped in a 2001 interview. Those who had the privilege to meet him in person would be disarmed by the sound of his laughter and the smile that would inevitably come up when he reminisced.

Master Nilton´s passing has further depleted that hallowed 1958 squad. In 2013 alone, right-back Djalma Santos and goalkeeper Gilmar dos Santos Neves also died. Only Pele, Zagallo, Zito and defender Bellini, the captain who lifted the trophy after Brazil´s 5-2 demolition of Sweden in the final, now survive from the starting XI that put Brazil in the map of world football.

Though Nilton Santos was not the Selecao captain, his experience and leadership helped settled younger teammates such as Pele and Garrincha, both of whom were brought in under a lot of pressure and expectations for a game against Russia after Brazil were held to a goalless draw by England, the first such 0-0 in World Cup history.

"I will be forever grateful to what Nilton did for me. He was an outstanding player and I will never forget how he took me under his wing when I was first called up to the Selecao at 16 years old. Apart from my father´s, Nilton´s advice was the most precious I had on a football pitch," Pele said on Wednesday after learning of Nilton´s death.

Santos will also be remembered for opening the floodgates to other marauding Brazilian left-backs, more notably Junior and Roberto Carlos. His influence also migrated to the opposite flank, where players like Cafu and Dani Alves also pay tribute to this desire to break the mould.

If winning the 1970 World Cup doesn´t make the Michael Jordan-Scottie Pippen analogy as applicable as it could be when mentioning Santos´ importance to Pele´s titles, the aforementioned endorsement leaves no doubt about Pele´s gratitude. So, too, are we eternally grateful to the man who defined a position, a club and a nation.

Hace 40 años, Independiente ganaba su primera Copa Intercontinental

BUENOS AIRES -- Independiente, que hoy lucha en la B Nacional por retornar a la Primera División, lograba hace 40 años un objetivo que se le había negado por tres veces, ya que conquistó la Copa Intercontinental al vencer a Juventus por 1-0 en la final jugada en Roma.

El 28 de noviembre de 1973, el Rojo pudo por fin ganar la tan ansiada Intercontinental, en su 14ta. edición, tras haber tenido clavada la espina de que Racing Club, su eterno rival, fue el primer equipo argentino que consiguió ese lauro en 1967.

El recordado `Rey de Copas` había sentido la frustración de haber caído dos veces seguidas, en 1964 y 1965, en sendas finales de la Intercontinental, ante el poderoso Inter de Milán, que en aquellos años fue dirigido por el argentino Helenio Herrera.

Y en el `72, al Rojo le tocó medirse ante el poderoso Ajax de Holanda y, una vez más, sintió la amargura de estar a las puertas de la Copa y frustrase, ya que tras igualar 1-1 en Avellaneda, en el estadio Olímpico de Amsterdam cayó derrotado por 3-0 ante el equipo del talentoso Johan Cruyff.

En 1973, el pueblo argentino vivía intensamente la reciente asunción a la Presidencia de la Nación, y por tercera vez en la historia, del teniente general Juan Domingo Perón, quien había ganado las elecciones con un impresionante 62 por ciento de los votos por sobre la fórmula del Partido Radical (Ricardo Balbín-Fernando De la Rúa).

En el orden deportivo, todavía estaba latente el magnífico campeonato local ganado por el Huracán que dirigió César Luis Menotti, con figuras como Miguel Brindisi, Carlos Babington, René Houseman y Omar Larrosa, entre otros.

Asimismo, las páginas de los diarios también reflejaban los éxitos de Guillermo Vilas en tenis y de Carlos Monzón en boxeo, quien en sus defensas del título le había ganado al estadounidense Emile Griffith y el francés Jean Claude Bouitier.

También Carlos Reutemann ocupaba un importante lugar en la información del automovilismo al lograr el tercer puesto en el Gran Premio de Francia de Fórmula 1.

En aquel `73, Independiente había ganado su cuarta Copa Libertadores, esta vez en una recordada final jugada en Montevideo ante Colo Colo de Chile, en la que se impuso por 2-1, luego de igualar 1-1 en Avellaneda y 0-0 en Santiago.

Para alcanzar la Intercontinental debía enfrentar al Ajax, campeón europeo, pero se negó a viajar a Sudamérica y su puesto fue ocupado por el subcampeón, Juventus de Italia, que impuso como condición disputar la final en un solo partido a jugarse en el estadio Olímpico de Roma.

Fue entonces la primera vez que el título de campeón mundial de clubes se definió en un solo cotejo (años después pasó a llamarse Copa Toyota y se definió por mucho tiempo con una final en Japón).

A los 35 minutos del primer tiempo, Daniel Bertoni, pasando la mitad de cancha, habilitó sobre la izquierda a su compadre Ricardo Bochini, quien dejó en el camino a Sandro Salvadore y se la devolvió en pared.

El puntero, sin detener el balón, repitió la jugada hacia el `10` que ya había alcanzado el área sobre el sector izquierdo y, con un remate bajo sobre el palo del arquero Dino Zoff consiguió el único gol del encuentro.

Así, Independiente conquistó su primera Copa Intercontinental, que después volvería a lograr en 1984 tras superar en Japón 1-0 a Liverpool de Inglaterra, con gol de José Percudani.
