Sampaoli dares local talent to step up against Costa Rica
After entertaining duels with England and Brazil, ‘La Roja’s’ next challenge will be Costa Rica on home turf, followed by a friendly with Germany in Stuttgart.
Chile coach Jorge Sampaoli will put the finishing touches to his highly competitive World Cup 2014 squad with confirmed friendlies against Costa Rica and Germany, the national soccer association (ANFP) confirmed Tuesday. Costa Rica’s national team will travel to Chile for an international friendly Jan. 22 , and “La Roja” will then face a stern test against a German side FIFA ranks second in the world in Stuttgart on March 5.
The manager revealed the match will be a chance for local league players to impress as he decides on backup for the starting eleven.
“In January we will have a friendly against Costa Rica, with a squad of local players as we look for alternatives,” he said to press last week before details with the Central American team were finalized.
Such homegrown talent may include Universidad Católica’s Cristopher Toselli, who Sampaoli has already chosen as the second-string goalkeeper behind Claudio Bravo on several occasions. Toselli’s teammate Nicolás Castillo will hope his impressive league form this season will earn him a second cap — the striker was first included in the adult national squad by Sampaoli in this year’s qualifiers after catching the manager’s eye during the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Turkey.
Sampaoli may also recall young attackers Ángelo Henríquez and Bryan Rabello, both of whom play their soccer in Europe. The manager has used the promising talents before, though they were left out of the clutch matches toward the end of Chile’s qualifying campaign as well as the friendlies against England and Brazil.
Costa Rica could prove a tough test for an experimental Chile team. The side finished second in the North, Central and Caribbean preliminaries, defeating table-topping team USA along the way.
“La Roja” will pay special attention to striker Álvaro Saborío, a World Cup veteran who scored a goal every other game to lead his team to Brazil.
The full strength squad will return to action against Germany on March 5 in Stuttgart. The sides have not played one another since German unification, and the match is sure to excite with both teams credited with playing some of the most attractive soccer on the international scene.
While both games are confirmed, alternative fixtures will be arranged should Chile be placed in the same World Cup 2014 group as either side come the draw on Dec. 6.
