Advantage San Lorenzo in title race as Newell’s and Arsenal both lose

A dramatic day in the Primera saw the door left wide open for San Lorenzo to claim the Torneo Inicial after Newell’s Old Boys’ spectacular slump continued and Arsenal too, were stunned in Sarandi.

All Boys took full advantage of the woeful form of Newell’s and eased to a 3-1 victory in Floresta but such as the performance of Alfredo Berti’s side, only conceding 3 in the first half was fortunate.

Arsenal hosted Belgrano in Sarandi, in a game they were expected to win but ended getting thumped 4-1 to leave their title hopes hanging by a thread.

Velez Sarsfield stayed in the race with a 2-0 win in Santa Fe against Colon. Mauro Zarate opened the scoring and was then sent off but a late Lucas Pratto penalty wrapped up the points.

Atletico Rafaela blew their chances after losing 3-1 against Tigre. The difficult away day was always likely to test their title credentials and they came up short. If San Lorenzo win today against Estudiantes and Lanus fail to beat Boca, El Ciclon will be crowned champions.

COLON 0 – 2 VELEZ SARSFIELD

Velez managed to keep themselves in the hunt with a victory in Santa Fe but will now be hoping that San Lorenzo slip up later today.
Mauro Zarate gave Velez the lead with a close range finish before inexplicably losing his cool and kicking a defender 5 minutes later. Referee, Silvio Trucco had no option but to show the ex-Lazio man a straight red card.

Colon were unable to make the man advantage count and with 10 minutes remaining Óscar Carniello pulled down the influential, Lucas Pratto in the box. The defender was shown a second yellow card and Pratto got up to ensure the 3 points from the spot.

All eyes will now be on San Lorenzo as the two sides meet on the final day. If El Ciclon do not win today, that match promises to be a cracker.

TIGRE 3 – 1 ATLETICO RAFAELA

Rafaela outside hopes of claiming the Torneo Inicial ended yesterday in Victoria, as Tigre once again showed their strength at home and defeated the visitors 3-1.

Guillermo Cosaro headed Tigre into an early lead, capitalising on an absent Rafaela defence and although Rodrigo Depetris earned an equaliser, the fight back was short lived.

Cosaro repeated the act of avoiding all defenders and heading in from close range to reestablish the lead and with minutes remaining, Pablo Vitto fired in the third.

ARSENAL 1 – 4 BELGRANO

Arsenal missed the opportunity of going top and putting some pressure on San Lorenzo after a surprising defeat at home to Belgrano. Cesar Pereyra was brought down by goalkeeper, Cristian Campestrini after just 10 minutes and ‘Picante’ got up to convert the penalty himself for his ninth goal of the season.

5 minutes before the break, Esteban González belted in the second to give the visitors a commanding half time lead.

Arsenal made the perfect start after the break as Hugo Nervo tapped in from close range but the comeback did not materialise.

Guillermo Farré scored the third after Carlos Bueno’s effort had come back off the cross bar and to rub salt in the wound, Damián Pérez passed the ball into his own net for a fourth.

ALL BOYS 3 – 1 NEWELL’S OLD BOYS

A horrible first half display saw Newell’s punished in spectacular fashion. Maxi Núñez gave All Boys the lead just 9 minutes in with a delicate chip over Nahuel Guzman and a minute later, the lead was doubled through Gonzalo Espinoza’s superb long range effort which left Guzman with no chance.

Before half-time Hernán Grana fired in a third and it could have been much worse for Newell’s with the amount of one-way traffic.

Pablo Perez managed to earn a consolation goal mid-way through the second half but could not avoid Newell’s sliding to a seventh straight game without a win. A run which looks to have ended the hopes of back-t0-back titles.

Leon thrash Morelia to advance and Toluca eliminate Cruz Azul

Leon and Toluca are the first teams into the Semi Final as they both eased through their Quarter Final second legs. Leon had allowed Morelia back into their first leg, conceding 2 late goals but their 4-0 demolition last night allied any fears and put out a stark warning to the other contenders. A spectacular long range strike from Hernan Burbano gave Leon the lead and second half goals from Mauro Boselli, Matias Britos and Jose Vazquez wrapped up their victory.

Toluca were leading Cruz Azul by 3 after the first leg so it would have taken an almighty comeback from La Maquina to turn it around. Christian Giménez gave them the lead from the spot but it was not to spark them into life and instead Pablo Velazquez levelled the game, ending any faint hopes. The 4-1 aggregate scoreline sends Toluca to the Semis and ends another disappointing campaign for Cruz Azul.

Liga MX Wrap: Leon lash four past Morelia

Leon crushed Morelia in the second leg of their Liga MX quarter-final while heavyweights America just got through.

Heading into their second leg locked 3-3 on aggregate, Leon punished Morelia 4-0 in Leon de los Aldamas.

http://www.youtube.com/w…qoIhSwdSvNU

Hernan Burbano, Mauro Boselli, Matias Britos and Juan Vazquez scored as Leon, who finished third in the Apertura, eased through.

Leon will face Toluca in the last four after they drew 1-1 at Cruz Azul to complete a 4-1 aggregate victory.

Morelia dominated the opening exchanges at Leon – even hitting the post through Jefferson Montero – but conceded on 28 minutes.

Burbano found space just outside the area and his powerful strike hit the underside of the crossbar before bouncing in.

The hosts struck a second on 57 minutes thanks to Boselli, who was on hand to tap in a corner at the back post after both the defence and goalkeeper Federico Vilar failed to deal with the cross.

Britos put the result beyond doubt with his header before Vazquez added another with a tremendous 35-yard drive into the top corner.

Toluca were untroubled at Cruz Azul despite a 33rd-minute penalty from Christian Gimenez giving the hosts hope.

http://www.youtube.com/w…8d7ZEWMElWE

Pablo Velazquez equalised for Toluca and they had a late chance to win it after Jair Pereira was sent off for Cruz Azul.

Toluca goalkeeper Alfredo Talavera stepped up to take the spot-kick but blazed it well high and well wide.

America, who finished top in the Apertura, battled through to the last four on away goals after a 1-1 draw at home to Tigres UANL.

http://www.youtube.com/w…dJgKdbAu3tc

Raul Jimenez gave America a 52nd-minute lead and they looked to be cruising when the visitors had Hugo Ayala sent off.

But Alan Pulido struck for Tigres, who were unable to find a crucial second goal, on 58 minutes as the tie finished 3-3.

America face Santos Laguna in the semi-finals after the latter were 3-1 winners in their second leg against Queretaro.

Carlos Quintero struck a second-half brace for Santos Laguna, seeing them to a 6-3 aggregate victory.

Costa Rica Primera Division Wrap: Herediano, Saprissa lead race to final

Herediano and Deportivo Saprissa claimed first-leg wins in their Costa Rica Primera Division semi-finals on Sunday.

Winners of the first stage, Herediano struck twice in the second half in their 2-0 over Cartagines at the Estadio Jose Rafael Fello Meza.

http://www.youtube.com/w…kR8b6uQWp0s

Jorge Arias was on the scoresheet from the penalty spot and Victor Nunez struck soon after to give Herediano a huge advantage heading into the return leg.

Arias´ 57th-minute opener via a spot-kick came after Esteban Sirias was sent off for the home side.

Nunez doubled the lead seven minutes later before he too was red-carded in the dying stages.

Deportivo Saprissa edged past Alajuelense 1-0 at the Estadio Ricardo Saprissa Ayma in San Jose.

Just after the hour-mark, Deyver Vega scored the only goal of the game with Alajuelense having been reduced to 10 men earlier when Allen Guevara saw red for lashing out.

Venezuela Primera Division Wrap: Mineros de Guayana down brave Tucanes

Mineros da Guayana maintained their two-point lead at the Venezuela Primera Division helm, as the top three all won on Sunday.

The league leaders remained top after an entertaining 3-2 win at Tucanes, making it 10 victories from 16 this season.

Alejandro Guerra netted a brace and the visitors held on in the final 15 minutes at the Estadio Antonio Jose de Sucre.

Guerra opened the scoring on five minutes, but his effort was cancelled out soon after by Jesus Gonzalez.

He restored Mineros de Guayana´s lead midway through the second half and Zamir Valoyes doubled it on 71 minutes.

Argenis Gomez pulled a goal back for the hosts from the penalty spot with 16 minutes remaining, but the visitors held on.

Zamora sit two points adrift of top after a 2-1 win over Caracas at the Estadio Rafael Agustin Tovar in Barinas.

Juan Falcon and John Murillo netted and Zamora were untroubled despite Edder Farias´ 88th-minute goal.

Deportivo Anzoategui are behind Zamora on goal difference after they also claimed a win, beating Carabobo 2-1.

Jose Moreno scored a brace in the important come-from-behind victory.

Estudiantes de Merida were 1-0 winners at Deportivo Lara and Llaneros de Guanare overcame Atletico El Vigia 2-1.

Deportivo Petare played out a 1-1 draw at home to Deportivo La Guaira and Yaracuyanos and Aragua played out a stalemate with the same scoreline.

Deportivo Tachira clinched a 2-0 victory at home to Zulia while Atletico Venezuela recovered from a two-goal deficit to draw 2-2 at home to Trujillanos.

Colombia Primera A Wrap: Deportivo Cali book finals spot

Deportivo Cali moved into the Colombia Primera A finals as Atletico Nacional also took a step closer to the decider.

Group B leaders Deportivo Cali made it four wins from as many matches in the semi-final stage with a 1-0 victory over Once Caldas.

http://www.youtube.com/w…5X_4v_wmDr0

With two matches remaining, they are six points clear of Deportivo Pasto, but cannot be overhauled because they finished higher on the table in the first stage.

Nestor Camacho hammered in a 44th-minute penalty down the middle for the only goal of the game.

Both teams were reduced to 10 men late on as Gustavo Cuellar and Patricio Perez were red-carded.

In Group A, Atletico Nacional moved three points clear with a hard-fought 2-1 victory at home to Junior.

http://www.youtube.com/w…1EOo9IOgCWA

Kick-off was delayed several hours due to a flooded Estadio Atanasio Girardot pitch in Medellin.

When play resumed, the hosts needed just two minutes to open the scoring when former Aston Villa striker Juan Pablo Angel headed past Sebastian Viera.

Wilder Guisao appeared to have sealed it on 66 minutes and the hosts held on despite Edison Toloza´s late strike.

Itagui scored twice in as many minutes in a 2-0 win at Santa Fe and Jorge Ramirez´s second-half hat-trick helped Deportivo Pasto hammer Millonarios 4-1.

Ecuador Primera A Wrap: Deportivo Quevedo stay alive

Deportivo Quevedo kept their hopes of survival in the Ecuador Primera A alive with a 2-0 win at home to Deportivo Quito.

http://www.youtube.com/w…5u5u44jkDco

Quevedo´s stunning late-season flurry has given them hope of sustaining their top-flight status for 2014, as their fourth win in five took them to 22 points in the second stage of the season.

Jose Mora´s men remain in the drop zone, with points from both phases contributing to relegation, with Quevedo (45 points) in striking distance of LDU Loja (46), Deportivo Cuenca (46) and Manta (48) heading to the final match of 2013.

Quevedo, though, have the toughest of battles to keep their Primera A status, with a trip to champions Emelec on the final day on Sunday.

LDU Loja also won to stay above Quevedo in the relegation battle, as they beat Independiente del Valle 2-1 at home - arresting a deficit inside the game´s final 20 minutes.

http://www.youtube.com/w…7TnVFP4Iz-g

Loja will venture to Deportivo Quito on the final day, needing to win or relying on Quevedo or Cuenca to slip up.

Cuenca were dragged right back into the relegation dogfight after going down 2-1 at Quito.

http://www.youtube.com/w…TWzKpNaq0nU

Cuenca led when Andres Rios struck prior to the half-time interval, but Quito equalised before the whistle through Enrique Vera prior to Luis Santana´s 80th-minute winner.

Manta failed to completely guarantee their top-flight status with a 0-0 draw at home to Emelec, but they are all but secure with point advantages on the other three sides in relegation contention.

Independiente del Valle host Manta next Sunday, with the visitors needing a point to sew up their Primera A place.

Wins to each of Loja, Cuenca and Quevedo combined with a Manta loss is the only scenario that would relegate the latter.

In other results, El Nacional beat the already relegated Macara 2-0, while Universidad Catolica had a 1-0 road win at Barcelona.

Peru Primera Division Wrap: Real Garcilaso to meet Universitario in final

Real Garcilaso sealed their place in the Peru Primera Division play-off with a 3-0 win over Pacifico on Sunday.

A Johnny Vegas own goal and strikes from Fabio Ramos and Alfredo Ramua saw Freddy Garcia´s men to the comfortable victory at the Estadio Municipal de Urcos.

They finished top of Group A – two points clear of Sporting Cristal – and will face Universitario in a two-legged play-off.

Ramos set up the opener on three minutes as his cross from the left was bundled in clumsily by Pacifico goalkeeper Vegas.

He then curled a free-kick over the bar, before doubling his side´s advantage on 31 minutes.

A ball was played into Ramos´ path and the captain drilled a powerful left-footed effort past Vegas from 18 yards.

Ramos was at the centre of everything throughout and he set up the sealer with 13 minutes remaining.

He played a square pass for Ramua, who took a few touches before beating Vegas from outside the area.

The duo celebrated the sealing goal with a dance as Real Garcilaso secured a spot in the play-off, which begins on December 8.

Pacifico´s loss was particularly costly as they slipped into the relegation place after Union Comercio claimed a 2-0 win at home to Sport Huancayo.

It meant Sporting Cristal´s 4-1 thrashing of Melgar mattered little as they finished second in Group A.

Elsewhere in the group, Alianza Lima drew 1-1 at home to Cesar Vallejo.

In Group B, Universitario warmed up for the play-off with a 2-2 draw at already relegated Jose Galvez.

UTC Cajamarca were 4-2 winners at Inti Gas, Juan Aurich claimed a 1-0 victory at Leon de Huanuco and Cienciano edged Universidad San Martin 1-0.

Chile Primera Division Wrap: Universidad Catolica, O´Higgins continue tight title tussle

Universidad Catolica hung onto top spot in the Chile Primera Division as the thrilling title battle continued.

A 1-0 win at home to Colo Colo on Sunday helped Catolica stay top on goal difference from O´Higgins with one Apertura match remaining.

O´Higgins stayed in touch with a 1-0 victory of their own, edging Union Espanola at home on Saturday.

At Catolica´s Estadio San Carlos de Apoquindo, Ismael Sosa got on the end of a cutback on 50 minutes to score the only goal of the game.

For 12th-placed Colo Colo, Christian Vilches was sent off on 72 minutes as they failed to find an equaliser.

O´Higgins needed a 54th-minute goal from Pablo Calandria to overcome fifth-placed Union Espanola.

Matias Ramirez´s winning goal four minutes before full-time saw Palestino to a 1-0 win at Deportes Iquique.

There were three red cards during Universidad Chile´s 1-1 draw at home to Universidad Concepcion and Nublense were too good for Everton in a 1-0 win.

Union La Calera clinched a 1-0 victory at Huachipato and Audax Italiano struck twice in the second half to overcome Rangers 2-0.

Antofagasta and Cobreloa played out a 0-0 draw and Cobresal were held to a 1-1 draw by Santiago Wanderers.

Uruguay Primera Division Wrap: Nacional stalk River Plate at the top

Nacional closed in on Uruguay Primera Division leaders River Plate after a 1-0 win over Cerro on Sunday.

Ivan Alonso´s 77th-minute strike saw Nacional cap a relatively dominant performance at the Estadio Gran Parque Central in Montevideo.

Only goal difference separates Nacional and River Plate, who were held to a 1-1 draw at home to El Tanque Sisley.

Lucas Olaza´s 81st-minute equaliser helped the league leaders retain their spot at the top after Alejandro Mello´s first-half opener.

Danubio missed their chance to go top after being thrashed 3-0 at home to Rentistas.

Gabriel Costa opened the scoring before David Terans struck twice in the space of five second-half minutes.

Despite losing three of their past five league games, Danubio sit third on the table – a point behind the top two.

Liverpool and Miramar Misiones played out a 2-2 draw in an encounter which saw both teams reduced to 10 men.

Sergio Blanco led the way for Wanderers as their six-goal thriller against Racing ended 3-3, with the forward netting a hat-trick.

Cecilio Waterman´s dramatic late winner was enough for Fenix to edge Cerro Largo 1-0, while Juventud and Penarol drew 0-0.

Sud America and Defensor Sporting were unable to be separated in a 0-0 draw.
