Hernán Grana podría pasar de All Boys a Boca a préstamo

BUENOS AIRES -- El lateral Hernán Grana podría pasar de All Boys a Boca Juniors a través de un préstamo y no en el marco de una transferencia definitiva, tras la reunión que los apoderados del jugador sostuvieron este jueves con directivos de la entidad de Floresta.
De acuerdo a lo narrado a Télam por allegados a la institución blanquinegra, el marcador de punta, cuyo pase en un 50 por ciento es del club de Floresta, sería cedido "en un préstamo por un año, si se logran ajustar algunos detalles".

En principio, lo que pretende la directiva de All Boys es que Grana, que tiene contrato vigente hasta junio de 2015, renueve su vínculo si es que acepta irse al xeneize, a préstamo, por una temporada.

Es que el ex-Lanús y Belgrano de Córdoba regresaría al club y a los seis meses podría solicitar la libertad de acción.

Grana, de 28 años, es el lateral elegido por el DT boquense, Carlos Bianchi, para reforzar el plantel.

MATOS PODRÍA IRSE A GIMNASIA

En otro orden, el delantero Mauro Matos también tiene la posibilidad de emigrar si es que prospera un sondeo que hizo Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata. Su ficha pertenece a All Boys en un 40 por ciento.

El éxodo podría proseguir si el zaguero Jonathan Ferrari acepta un ofrecimiento que le formularon desde el Emelec de Ecuador.

Del mismo modo, el lateral izquierdo Carlos Soto tiene un pedido para irse a un club brasileño, cuyo nombre no fue revelado.

El plantel dirigido por Ricardo Rodríguez retornará a la actividad, tras las vacaciones, el lunes 6 de enero, en el predio de Ciudad Evita.

Se sorteó la Copa Libertadores 2014

ASUNCIÓN -- La Confederación Sudamericana de Fútbol (Conmebol) sorteó el jueves el emparejamiento de la primera fase y los grupos de la segunda ronda de la Copa Libertadores de América 2014, en la que competirán 38 clubes.
La Copa Libertadores, que llega a su edición 55 y se disputa desde 1960, se disputará en el primer semestre de 2014.

Hasta ahora hay 34 equipos clasificados, a falta de cuatro conjuntos de torneos nacionales que aún no han terminado.

Newell`s Old Boys de Rosario, campeón del pasado torneo Final 2013, tendrá, en apariencia, una dura competencia para intentar sortear la fase de grupos de la 55ta. edición de la Copa Libertadores 2014.

Luego del sorteo efectuado este jueves en Asunción, en el hotel de la Confederación Sudamericana de fútbol (Conmebol), el conjunto rosarino quedó enrolado, como cabeza de serie, en el grupo 6, junto a Gremio de Porto Alegre (Brasil), Atlético Nacional de Medellín (Colombia) y al ganador de la llave preliminar número 6, que comprenderán Oriente Petrolero (Bolivia)-Nacional (Uruguay).

En tanto, Arsenal, campeón de la Copa Argentina, entró a la zona 8, al igual que Peñarol (Uruguay), Deportivo Anzoátegui (Venezuela) y Santos Laguna (México).

Por su lado, Velez Sarsfield, ganador de la Superfinal, ingresó como cabeza de serie en el grupo 1 y todavía no tiene definido ningún rival.

El conjunto de Liniers deberá medirse en la etapa de clasificación con Bolivia 2 (surgirá de una liguilla), Perú 1 (será el campeón del torneo local y se definirá el domingo entre Real Garcilaso o Universitario) y el vencedor de la llave preliminar 1 que animarán Sporting Cristal, de Perú, y Atlético Paranaense, de Brasil.

El equipo argentino que se consagre campeón en el torneo Inicial 2013 irá al grupo 2 del certamen continental, junto a Unión Española (Chile), Independiente de José Terán (Ecuador) y el vencedor de la eliminatoria 2 entre Deportivo Quito, de Ecuador, y Botafogo, de Brasil.

Si San Lorenzo gana el Inicial se meterá en la zona 2, River se quedará afuera y Lanús jugará la previa ante el Caracas.

Si Lanús se impone en el torneo argentino irá al grupo 2, mientras River jugará el repechaje con Caracas de Venezuela (el ganador se meterá en la zona 3).

Por último, el quinto equipo argentino, que será Lanús o River Plate, deberá superar la ronda preliminar para acceder a la fase de grupos. En ese primer emparejamiento tendrá como rival a Caracas.

Pero si tiene la suerte de avanzar en el repechaje, ese conjunto nacional no la tendrá fácil en la ronda de grupos, ya que compartirá el 3 con Cerro Porteño (Paraguay), O`Higgins (Chile) y Deportivo Cali (Colombia).

El certamen sudamericano más importante arrancará el 29 de enero con las seis llaves preliminares, también llamada Prelibertadores.

Grand-final victory for O’Higgins coach may secure defeated rival’s position

After snatching the title from his fingertips, Eduardo Berizzo could take Martín Lasarte’s job should Católica coach fail to win a title next season, while player transfer rumors abound.

According to El Mercurio, the powers that be at the Católica’s holding company, Cruzados SADP, have found it within themselves to give the Uruguayan one last shot at a championship. If Lasarte fails to win next year’s January through April Clausura tournament, O’Higgins coach Eduardo Berizzo may be ushered in to replace him.

Speculation of a changing of the guard at both clubs extends beyond the coaching staff — as is generally the case at the end of the season in the top flight, the player transfer rumor mill is in overdrive.

Católica’s house of cards, O’Higgins’ Libertadores lifeline

Well-monied Católica will most likely fend off bids for star players on a domestic level, though when clubs from overseas bat their eyelashes, talent such as Nicolás Castillo and Cristopher Toselli are a flight risk. Following striker Ismael Sosa’s resplendent form in the Apertura, Mexican club Pumas is already inline to snap up the Argentine after this month’s Copa Libertadores playoff against Iquique.

By winning the Apertura, O’Higgins has already secured a Libertadores spot, and this presents a major coup for the club from Rancagua. Unlike 2012, when an over-achieving O’Higgins side finished runner up and saw top goal scorer Enzo Gutiérrez poached by domestic giant Universidad de Chile, the prospect of playing in Latin America’s elite international club tournament may just be enough to convince star men to remain on modest wages for one more year. Following weeks of silence, star striker Pablo Calandria hinted Tuesday that he will most likely remain with the club next year and lead the team out on foreign soil. Talismanic Pedro Hernández made public his bid for Chilean citizenship and desire to play in Sampaoli’s World Cup squad — not quite a contract renewal, but a good sign for O’Higgins nonetheless.

The pull of the Libertadores may well attract some of the O’Higgins old guard too. Gutiérrez has failed to deliver at “La U” though holds a special place in the hearts of O’Higgins fans for catalyzing the club’s route to the upper echelons of Chilean soccer. The Argentine would have a better chance at first team play at his old club, and the same goes for his “La U” teammate and former O’Higgins man Albert Acevedo, who reportedly does not figure in Marco Antonio Figueroa’s plans for 2014. For most fans, returning players wouldn’t be perceived as a regression for the club, but rather necessary reinforcements ahead of next year’s expanded calendar.

Close but no cigar for Martín Lasarte

Lasarte first took control of the Católica in 2012 and suffered a tough start, failing to secure a play-off spot in that year’s Clausura — though since then his record improved massively. Lasarte narrowly missing out on a championship by goal difference in the Transition Tournament 2013. A tragic irony lies in the fact that Católica had a vastly superior goal difference to its table topping competition this time round, though the rules had changed.

The Uruguayan’s would-be successor, Eduardo Berizzo, has impressed since taking control of the O’Higgins in 2012 — second and fourth place Primera División finishes and the club’s first stint in the Copa Sudamericana all preceded this year’s title. Católica’s board of directors is said to have long admired Berizzo, and will likely rely on José María Buljubasich — a senior figure in Católica’s coaching staff and a great friend of Berizzo’s — to facilitate any move for him.

The axe could fall quicker still if Lasarte fails to qualify for the Copa Libertadores 2014 in this month’s playoff against Iquique. In that instance Lasarte could part ways before next year’s Clausura, replaced by an interim manager — Andrés Romero is the name floated by some reports, the Católica U-17 coach having performed that same role before Lasarte.

Elsewhere in the league, former Chile U-20 coach Mario Salas was officially presented as the new Huachipato manager this week following the departure of Jorge Pellicer by mutual consent, while Colo Colo has offered a full-time contract to interim coach Héctor Tapia.

Martín Lasarte renunció a la U Católica

SANTIAGO DE CHILE -- El uruguayo Martín Lasarte anunció el jueves su renuncia al banquillo de la Universidad Católica una vez que termine la participación del equipo Cruzado en la liguilla del torneo Apertura que otorga un cupo a la Copa Libertadores.

El técnico dio a conocer su decisión en una rueda de prensa realizada en el estadio San Carlos de Apoquindo y donde dijo que "las decisiones hay que tomarlas en tranquilidad y siento que lo mejor hoy es dar un paso al costado".

Lasarte indicó que su despedida la tenía planificada desde el martes 10 de diciembre, cuando perdió la final ante O´Higgins, pero los directivos del club lograron convencerlo para que dirija los encuentros de la liguilla.

El técnico se lamentó por no levantar una copa con la Universidad Católica y agregó en su conferencia que "los buenos números no son suficientes, porque no hemos podido concretar eso en ser Campeón, que era lo que más quería".

Según Radio Cooperativa, Martín Lasarte dejará su cargo el 22 de diciembre si es que llega a la final de la liguilla, catorce días antes del inicio del torneo Clausura 2014 y Andrés Romero quedará como técnico interino mientras se busca el reemplazo del uruguayo.

Brazilian politics ulimately decided the Selecao´s group stage destinations

Sauipe Class, the posh outlet in the middle of the immense Costa do Sauipe resort where the World Cup draw took place last Friday, turned into a kind of speed-dating opportunity for journalists and the managers attending the ceremony.

Invariably, answers about expectations for the draw referred to an almost universal desire of avoiding heavy travel at all costs. So it could come as a surprise that Brazil, given all the power that the hosts apparently have over the fixture list, will be hitting the road hard next summer -- in fact, they’re one of the teams that will clock the most air miles in the group stages.

After opening the tournament against Croatia in Sao Paulo on June 12, Brazil will then host Mexico in Fortaleza five days later before finishing their Group A commitments against Cameroon on June 23 in Brasilia. That´s around 2485.485 miles (4,000km) in 11 days.

Worse yet, the Selecao will not play at their temple, the refurbished Maracana, unless they reach the final. Imagine England deciding to relinquish their right to play at Wembley and forgo using the mystique of the stadium to their advantage.

Perhaps, but things are a bit different on the warmer side of the Atlantic. First of all, Brazil´s World Cup flight plan mirrors the entanglement of sports and politics that has prevailed for decades in the country. Things are not different when there’s a World Cup involved. Everybody wants a piece of the Selecao, and that trumps the mere logistics. Nobody was ever in doubt that the Selecao would end up being a travelling band.

But before you start pitying the players, bear in mind that some of them are quite happy with the schedule. They might not all be doing somersaults about playing in Sao Paulo, a city that has always been a difficult place for the Selecao given one of the most demanding crowds in Brazil. The 1950 team, for example, were booed to the rafters after a 2-2 draw against Switzerland, which could not be more of a contrast with the carnival atmosphere that greeted them in Rio.

Players do understand, though, that there was no way the richest and biggest Brazilian city would miss out on the action. Yet there are fewer reservations towards Fortaleza. Not only have Northeastern crowds historically treated the Selecao like the Beatles circa 1964 (just without the "more popular than Jesus" comments) but also the Castelao has become a special place for the players since the game against Mexico in the Confederations Cup on June 19 -- even the Mexican media mentioned the iconic execution of the national anthem at that match, the one they are scheduled to hear again next June.

Finally, Brasilia. It´s the capital of the country but far from a traditional football city. One has to wonder if the notorious favor-trading between the Brazilian Football Confederation and assorted congressmen wasn’t the rationale behind the decision. Belo Horizonte, Fortaleza and Salvador are other possible Selecao stops en route to the final. The public in Rio will at least have the chance to see Argentina, Spain and France there in the group stages.

Unlike England, Brazil never exclusively played at the Maracana when they could, with friendly matches staged all over the country for at least the past three decades. However, the Maracana is still the place where the Selecao has held the bulk of their games (104), losing only seven times. That one of them was a World Cup final doesn’t seem to be a huge problem given that the last two finals the team played at home, the 1989 Copa America and the 2013 Confederations Cup, were both wins in Rio -- and, of course, the 2014 World Cup final could well be another for the home side.

When the list of dates and venues was released in 2011, the official word from the Local Organizing Committee was that Rio had received the biggest amount of games (seven, alongside Brasilia). "The World Cup can’t be only about one city," said one LOC member.

One can´t stop thinking, though, that the Maracana was hard done by decisions not specifically related to the benefit of players and fans.

America falls to Leon in first leg of finals

Club America fell 2-0 to Leon in the opening game of the Liga MX championship final Thursday, putting itself in a deep and difficult hole. A trophy isn´t won in the first leg of a two-match final, but it can be lost in that opening match. Because of the away-goal rule, Las Aguilas are obligated to score three goals without taking one against in order to win the title. It’s a tall order for any squad, even one as talented and skilled as Club America.

Las Aguilas are gunning for a record 12th title, but they may have to wait longer for that accomplishment. Leon, for its part, has waited more than 20 years for another title to add to the five it has earned. The important first step has already been taken.

The club certainly made the most of the home advantage in the first leg of the final. In the Estadio Leon, the stands were a virtual forest of green shirts, with fans enthusiastically urging their team on.

Carlos Pena responded barely 11 minutes into the match. The goal, though a bit sloppy, was almost expected, because Leon had been attacking with frenetic energy, desperate to notch an advantage before having to face Club America in Azteca.

One goal can be overcome. Club America had already made up a goal disadvantage in the semifinal to eliminate high-scoring Toluca, and there was certainly the feeling that a single goal wasn’t fatal.

If anything, it appeared in the second half that Las Aguilas were going to notch a goal of their own and escape with a draw. Club America’s attack was more lively, and Rubens Sambueza, Raul Jimenez and Luis Rey all had decent chances. However, none of those opportunities was put away.

Just when it seemed that Leon would back down meekly and concede an inevitable equalizer, Mauro Boselli, the Argentine assassin, stepped in to deliver a deadly goal in the 76th minute. The angle was improbable, the chip had to be lofted just so over the flailing arms of Club America goalkeeper Moises Munoz, but Boselli managed to pull off the skillful move and make it look easy.

It was almost a magical goal for another reason -- since it killed the momentum of Club America’s attacking play at a crucial moment, Boselli’s goal helped ensure the visitors went home without a precious away goal.

That leaves Club America with a mountain to climb in the final championship game.

It’s even a more difficult task given the quality of Leon’s defense. Led by veteran central defender Rafael Marquez and an energetic young goalkeeper, William Yarbrough, Leon has given up very few goals all season long.

Coach Gustavo Matosas crafted a “bend but don’t break” game plan that didn’t put the players into a defensive shell, which is how Leon was able to spring quick counterattacks on Club America.

Las Aquilas, it must be said, did not play their best. Out of sorts and a little out of control, they rushed passes and shots. Perhaps there was a psychological component to the disjointed play, since the players might have been putting pressure on themselves to win the title for coach Miguel Herrera before he departs the club. The epic comeback now required means that the players will have to dig deep on their own behalf on Sunday in order to overturn the current result.

Otherwise, the Liga MX trophy will have a decidedly green tint to it. The championship will belong to Leon, and the rest of the league can only be green with envy.

Dan el primer golpe

Heredia venció a Comunicaciones y sueña con el título del Apertura.
Nelson Enrique Miranda y Anderson Andrade hicieron los goles con los que el conjunto herediano venció 2-0 a los cremas en la final de ida.

El duelo se disputó esta tarde en el estadio Del Monte de Morales, Izabal, ante un impresionante marco de aficionados.

El partido empezó bien, con mucha dinámica, Heredia salió desde el primer minuto a buscar las anotaciones, pero Comunicaciones no se quedó atrás y eso hizo un duelo intenso. Osmar López, primero de cabeza y luego de zurda, falló las primeras opciones para los locales.

Mientras tanto, el árbitro Juan Carlos Guerra debió detener por dos minutos el juego debido a que el humo producido por morteros utilizados por la afición local impedía la visibilidad.

El conjunto local siguió creando opciones, sin embargo a Enrique Miranda y a Anderson Andrade les costó mucho abrirse espacio ante la defensiva crema. Fue Henry Medina quien inquietó a Paredes al minuto 24 con un remate de tiro libre.

De a poco los albos empezaron a inclinar la cancha y generaron las opciones más claras de la primera parte. El delantero Minor López tuvo las mejores jugadas para abrir el marcador, pero no fue contundente.

“Nacho” se encontró solo frente al guardameta José Calderón, remató sin fuerza y el panameño se quedó con el balón, todo esto al minuto 27. López también pudo adelantar a los cremas con dos cabezazos que se fueron desviados. Al minuto 32 volvió a aparecer Calderón tras desviar un remate de Carlos Figueroa.

La primera parte concluyó con cierto dominio visitante y la insistencia de López de abrir el marcador. Minor pudo anotar el primer gol del juego, pero esta vez Rodolfo Rafael González, que ingresó al 38 por Víctor Hernández, se cruzó en el camino y evitó la anotación del delantero albo.

En la segunda mitad el partido cambió, las revoluciones de juego bajaron y la intensidad con la que se jugó en el primer tiempo desapareció.

Comunicaciones hizo resaltar su experiencia en este tipo de juegos y manejó el ritmo de partido. Jorge Aparicio no desentonó y cortó cualquier tipo de aproximación en el mediocampo de los albos. Mientras, Jairo Arreola fue el más insistente en la ofensiva crema en el segundo tiempo; en una jugada preparada de tiro de esquina remató fuerte y Calderón expulsó el balón con los puños.

José Contreras y Rodolfo Paolo Suárez no tuvieron un buen partido y abandonaron el campo por disposición de Iván Franco Sopegno; en su lugar ingresaron Carlos Mejía y Jean Márquez, que pasaron desapercibidos.

Y Heredia tenía guardado lo mejor para el final. Al 62 Juan José Paredes mandó el balón al tiro de esquina luego de un disparo de Wilfred Velásquez. Otra vez Paredes, al 80, desvío agónicamente con la pierna derecha la pelota, tras el remate de Osmar López.

Cuatro minutos después y de la forma menos esperada, los locales abrieron el marcador. Héctor De Mata cobró un tiro libre, el balón fue desviado por Enrique Miranda y se fue directo al marco visitante ante la impotencia de los defensores cremas. Al 84 los heredianos se pusieron arriba 1-0.

El árbitro Juan Carlos Guerra repuso tres minutos al final del duelo y cuando todo estaba por terminar, Miranda filtró un balón entre líneas a Anderson Andrade, el brasileño tomó el balón y se enfiló hacia el área, Paredes salió, pero no pudo evitar que el balón ingresara en su portería.

Todos los cremas reclamaron fuera de lugar, sin embargo Guerra no titubeó en avalar la anotación y terminar el duelo en ese instante, con el marcador de 2-0 favorable a Heredia.

Los dirigidos por Juan Carlos Elías ganaron el partido y dieron un gran paso en el camino al título del torneo Apertura 2013.

Comunicaciones y Heredia se enfrentarán el sábado a las 18:00 horas en el estadio Cementos Progreso. El duelo definirá al campeón del certamen.

“Son rumores”

Hernán Medford, ¿candidato a dirigir la Selección de Guatemala?

El técnico costarricense Hernán Evaristo Medford desmintió este día que existan conversaciones con el Comité Ejecutivo de la Federación Nacional de Futbol para que sea el técnico de la Bicolor Nacional.

Así lo expresó en entrevista con Everardo Herrera, titular del programa Al Pie del Deporte en Costa Rica. El ex entrenador de Xelajú MC observó la final entre Heredia y Comunicaciones disputada este jueves en el estadio Del Monte, pero explicó que su visita se debió a la cercanía del lugar con Honduras, en donde reside actualmente, y no a otro tema.

Además, manifestó que existe una muy buena relación con Milton Mendoza, Vocal I del Comité Ejecutivo de la Fedefut y máximo jerarca del club herediano. “Me llevo bien con él (Mendoza) desde que yo dirigí en Xelajú, pero el tema hoy no fue para eso, fue solo para ir a ver el juego; era algo que ya habíamos planeado”, puntualizó Medford.

“No hay ningún acercamiento, son rumores”, dijo el estratega tico sobre la posibilidad de encabezar el cuerpo técnico del combinado azul y blanco.

A Medford aún le queda año y medio de contrato con Real España, equipo con el que podría ser campeón este domingo en el futbol hondureño.

“Sí me gustaría dirigir una selección del área, creo que es el próximo paso a seguir y, siempre lo he dicho, Guatemala es una selección que me gustaría”, manifestó el estratega costarricense.

It was a whirlwind burst of transfer activity at Chivas on Thursday, with four pieces of big news coming out of the club as it prepares for the Clausura 2014 after a disastrous 2013.

1. Chivas officially announce Marco Fabian will join Cruz Azul on a one-year loan deal

While the writing was on the wall when Fabian was placed on the Chivas transfer list, seeing such a talent leave for another Mexican club does leave a tinge of sadness.

The plan was that Fabian would shine with Chivas in the six months after the Olympics and that a top European club would swoop in with a eight-figure check (in US dollars) and Chivas would be hailed once again as a fine producer and developer of Mexican talent.

Seeing perhaps the player most identified with Chivas over the last three years in the blue of Cruz Azul will be strange, although on the positive side for Chivas, if he does produce for La Maquina, the Guadalajara club would be the financial beneficiaries of any big money future move.

Alternatively, he could even return and make good on those promises to take Chivas to the title.

Mexico and Cruz Azul goalkeeper Jesus Corona described Pereira on Thursday as "one of the best center backs I´ve had," and while the 27-year-old isn´t a star name, he is someone who can brings consistency and experience to the heart of Chivas´ rocky defense.

It´s not a sexy signing to appease fans promoting the "Chivaton" hashtag on Twitter as a way of raising awareness about owners Jorge Vergara and Angelica Fuentes not spending money on new recruits. Those fans will point out that despite Chivas´ official announcement releasing the three million dollar price tag -- a rare occurrence -- in essence, this is a part exchange deal involving Israel Castro and Fabian.

But Pereira should add a substantial positive to the team´s backline, which only managed five clean sheets in 34 league matches in 2013 and had the second-worst record in the Liga MX last season.

3. Mexico international Carlos Salcido comes out and states he wants to leave Tigres and rejoin El Rebano Sagrado.

There was no gray area when Salcido came out in a press conference on Thursday to express his disappointment with Tigres for not letting him go and explicitly stated that he wants to go back to first club Chivas.

It was refreshing for a player to say it and makes his place at Tigres most likely untenable, despite him admitting that he still has a contract and would “give his all” if he had to stay.

What is much more likely is that a deal will now be struck to bring Salcido home to the city where he used to wash cars outside the bus terminal as a teenager. For Chivas, the professionalism, experience, leadership and link he has with locals will very much be welcome.

Salcido should´ve moved back to Chivas from Fulham two years ago, but Vergara said he wasn´t going to pay more than he sold him for. Surely that was a mistake, but rectifying two years late is better than not doing so at all.

4. Carlos Gerardo Rodriguez is reportedly close to joining Chivas, with Miguel Ponce heading in the opposite direction to Toluca.

Like Pereira, the Rodriguez signing would be unspectacular, but would bring Chivas a player that gives seven-out-of-ten performances week in, week out, rather than the inconsistency of Ponce. It would be a like-for-like replacement at left back.

Rodriguez may be four years Ponce´s senior at 28, but can, like Pereira, provide a greater degree of solidness at the back, with the Californian primarily known for his attacking forays.

When you are in a relegation battle, as Chivas will be in 2015, keeping it tight in defense is going to be key.
